"Does the job"
This is the first time I have used Turbo Tax. My returns aren't real complicated and previously I did everything by hand.... I was skeptical after reading the complaints some reviewers had, but went ahead anyway since my situation should be pretty straightforward.

Conclusion: I am glad I purchased this product. It led me through the entire process, asked relevant questions, put everything in the right place, and printed my return and supporting schedules. It also saved me some tax dollars (much more than the purchase price) by pointing out a deduction I hadn't thought about. It was soooo nice not to have to deal with all the frustrations associated with doing the return by hand!

Note: I bought only the Federal version. I live in California and think it is a waste of time to buy the state version unless you have a very complex situation. For most people it is an easy matter to follow the California forms and transfer the info from your federal return.

I plan on purchasing the 2002 edition, unless our government gets wise and reforms the tax system to get rid of all the politcal special interest greed that makes doing taxes so convoluted. So in other words, I plan on purchasing the 2002 edition.

"A really pathetic product"
Ive used Kiplinger's program for three years now on three different machines with no problems and consistently good results. Today, I purchased Turbo Tax 2001 by mistake (really, I didnt look closely and just tossed it into my cart).
After completely finishing my taxes (two hours) I saved to a diskette and decided to print at a later date. When I went to open my saved tax return.....nothing. The diskette is fine, everything else on it is fine, but my tax return is COMPLETELY GONE! Nice job Intuit. Im out [the money], a trip to the store (again) and two awful hours of filing my tax return.
Is this, easy, fast, or powerful tax help? I certainly think not. Never again will I buy an Intuit product.

"Download worked fine"
I downloaded the product and had my taxes done by the end of day. Watch out for the rebate text file to get your free electronic filing rebate-- use the icon on your desktop to print and send in after you file.

They make doing your taxes so easy....I am sorry I ever paid for someone else to do them!

"A must have!"
As a first time user, in 45 minutes I had the program loaded, updates downloaded and my taxes done. It was very simple and guided me through all the write-offs I needed (house, car, work, moving, etc.)

It is well worth the money!!! I noticed that I really only needed the federal turbo tax and then I could easily do state taxes on my own.

"Overpriced junk made even worse this year!", This software, which is already overpriced junk... historically, now leads the pack for the 2003 award for Most Obnoxious Software with the addition of "mother-may-I" copy protection (can't use it without Intuit's express permission on a single machine) and installation of admitted spyware ("C-Dilla" aka, "SafeCast") that stays even when TurboTax is uninstalled! Although the Mac version doesn't have these issues, Intuit charges double for that luxury...

"Rats!", I've used Turbo Tax for 7 years, but 2001 was probably the last.
I'd carefully kept Internet Explorer off my computer - no easy feat! Then, I install TurboTax 2001 and it installs IE! No asking if I wanted it, no "cancel" button, just a program I didn't want. (Which incidentally [fouled] up my internet connection.)
But that's not all. While running, Turbo Tax splashes advertisements for all kinds of garbage on the screen. I don't know about you, but I find doing taxes unpleasant enough without having to plow through supurflous adverts.
Maybe they should charge a little more up front and quit the bogus hucksterism.

"the Turbo Tax Download", This is the first time I have used TurboTax. I had trouble with Mutual Funds and went to a professional tax preparer for the last three years. I was anticipating difficulty with it and had some anxious moments, but it turned out beautifully. I got more money back in refunds than I ever had. I felt I had to sign up for Audit Protection because TurboTax sent so much back. The one problem I had was that I didn't know where to enter charitable donations.

"TurboTax - more is less", For the third consecutive year, I purchased TurboTax for my family tax software. As it brings forward much of the data from the previous year, it makes data entry quicker, certainly a good move towards guaranteeing repeat business, and th single reason I purchased TurboTax rather than a competitive product.

That said, my beef with the latest, Year 2001 version, has to do with its inclusion of many screens of video files discussing the latest tax laws and implications for all. Two points here - from the data taken from my income status, it is clear that parts of the tax laws do not apply to me. Does TurboTax then skip these sections? Not on your life; I should just be impressed that software created to bring organization from chaos can do so, and click through all the excess.

Oh by the way, save your file often. My computer locked up twice on me (PIII 550 machine operating on Win98) attributed by microsoft explorer as due to the video, though none were being asked to run at the time.

I buy tax software to simplify a distasteful process. Lately, TurboTax is bringing unneeded complexity back to the process.



 
Read this reviews before You buy...

"Turbotax For The Web? YES! ; Turbotax cd-rom NO!", Both Turbotax for the web and the Turbotax cd-rom are exactly the same product. I found the software user-friendly. The tips very helpful, (did you know the cost of this product is tax-deductible?), and filing my taxes considerably less stressful than paper filing. It's more of a personal preference. When trying to decide which way to go, I factored in time and cost of each option. With the cd-rom you pay for all your products before hand, (federal, state, e-file for federal, e-file for state), and wait for a refund. You have to wait at least 10 weeks for your money back and from some reviews that's not even guranteed. I don't know about you but I can barely wait for my tax refund! The alternative is the website. You don't have to install any software, download any forms, your information is filed on a secure website and you pay for your federal & state e-filing at one time. Much cheaper. Less time consuming. If you come back next year, your information is stored and easily retrievable. (Just don't forget your password.) Again, it's a personal preference, but to me it's more cost and time efficient through the website.

"Electronic Filing fails on WIN98 SE systems with IE 6", I've been using this software for several years and have been very pleased up until this year. When I attempt to electronic file it fails with a message that "Connection was reset by the host". I used the TurboTax support web site and the live support. Neither of these offered a solution that allowed the e-filing to work on my WIN98SE IE 6 system. All of their suggestions were for IE 5.5. Looks like I'll be mailing my return instead of e-filing due to this TurboTax 2001 bug.

"Couldn't be easier!", So long, H&R Block! With this software, I did my taxes in less than an hour, sent the forms off pronto and got my rebate back within 3 weeks! Put me on the list for Turbo Tax 2002 --- I'll definitely be buying it!

"Year-after-year good tax program", I use it every year; .... Excellent, easy-to-use (esp. if you have a complex return) and worth every penny.
I recommend this over Deluxe-- I'm not convinced Deluxe adds a lot of value.

"Downloading should be easy....", error's downloading......better to get the CDROM until Amazon figures this one out...regardless of who's end is the problem, the website should be informative enough to prevent any issues or problems in downloading.
