"Contrarian Report - I love it!"
Let me begin by stating that I have been using WinFax software for about 20 years (I was an "early adapter") and I love this software!
I have been working with both the hardware end of computers and the software end for over 3 decades and, when I first encountered WinFax, I realized that it was a_theoretically_ perfect solution to my need to have a fax machine without the expense. I quickly established that it was, _indeed_, that solution . . . and that was with the product 20 years ago.

Fast forward to today's WinFax product (I have used most of the versions inbetween, by the way). I bought a new computer and needed the ability to fax (again). I did some checking on my options and I again chose WinFax. My system is a Wi-XP w/ sp2, by the way, and I had no problems with the installation. Stuck in the CD, followed the cues and, voila!, had the software installed.

Yes, I had to set up a "Fax Printer" (no big deal) but, once that was done, I first did a "print to Fax" from Word, then from Excel, then from Access, and then came the big test . . . Epson 1250 scanner directly to WinFax. not terribly long after that, I switched to a sheet feed scanner (long story but there WAS a need). Again, no problem, scna a sheet and, poof!, it's ready to address as a fax (as well as being saved to disc). I will admit that I was a little disappointed when I realized that I couldn't scan more than one page directly to WinFax but I am not sure that the problem is with WinFax instead of the scanner software.

So, in general, here is my evaluation,
Pros:
1) The software installs as easily as any other on Win-XP Pro w/ sp2 (don't know about XP-Home because I don't know why anyone would use it with a Whatever-PRO piece of software);
2) The configuration is easy to set up;
3) It has not as yet interfered with my scanner changes;
4) Because it looks like a printer, it readily receives output from whatever you want to send from.

Cons:
1) I have, as yet, not been successful in setting up the text message to my cell phone . . . but I haven't really pursued it either;
2) I would like a better process for printing out selected columns of the log information . . . this point it is virtually useless for that purpose.

Wish List:
1) I wish that I could set a Calling Card for international calls ONLY;
2) I would love to be able to fax via the internet without having to pay the high prices of current internet fax services . . . even a fax to email without using my email client would be great;

Untried Features:
1) I am not currently using the Voice Mail feature (I have it on a dedicated line);
2) I am not now using the Fax Sharing feature but I am about to try to set it up;

"Crippleware!!"
Please listen to the warnings posted by all the other reviewers! WinFax Pro 10.0 and 10.03, crashes a lot! I got so fed up with it crashing that I uninstalled the software. I also tested it on my friend's PC and it crashed on his system as well. Hard to believe that this is a product from Symantec. WinFax is on the same level as "Crippleware". Many of us don't hear that term often anymore, but it has re-surfaced in the form of WinFax. Do NOT buy this product, save your money and look for other Fax software.

"If you don't like your computer, buy WinFaxPro"
I have an early version of WinFaxPRO (the later versions I'm told are no better) that has become engraved on my computer. There's no way to get rid of it, no way to reinstall it, no way from keeping it from peppering my computer with error messages, no way to get help from Symantec. Oh yes, if you persist, you will unearth a programmer's directions on removing the program by deleting certain files in the Registry and doing other computer-threatenng tasks. With Symantec's track record, I'd sooner have a frontal lobotomy. The same dire warnng holds true for getting rid of GHOHT, and I have the latest version of that. It holds on to your computer like a muscle on a wet rock. Buy a backup program from a more civilized purveyor than Symantec, and for faxes, BUY A STAND ALONE MACHINE!

"Save your money."
Trying to use this product on XP is a waste of time/money. Tech Support is useless, as is online support.

We have been using winfax for 9 years, but the product has only gotten worse(more complicated).

Problems with 10.0 on XP include, word processors locking up, auto receive disabling after receiving 1 fax, lock up on send if using explorer at the same time.

"Beware"
Thsi will crash Outlook everytime you close Outlook. Period. Tech support is less than helpful despite the fact that they acknowledge it's a known problem.

Please fix this and restore Symnatec's good name or retire this product.

"the worst product ever made", how a company can release a program that does not work is beyond me... it DOES NOT sync up with ACT! the way is it designed to do... I realize that ACT! changed their software, but that's no excuse... the program basically becomes worthless - why no updates? why no contact program? why no vision?

"Here's how to fix the problem with Winfax and Outlook 2003", I spoke with Symantec tech support today about resolving the problem with Winfax and Outlook 2003. Basically what was happening was everytime I closed Outlook 2003, I would get an error message that Outlook needed to shut down. When I clicked on "Send this error report to Microsoft" it sent a message back to me identifying Winfax as the culprit. It had a link to Symantec's website with an article on the issue with Outlook 2003. I then contacted tech support and after several days and repeated phone calls (I kept getting transfered and promised to be called back), I spoke to someone who told me how to fix the problem. Go to Start then Control Panel. Then click on the link the Mail icon. Then delete the Winfax Logs listed in the menu. The tech rep told me that Outlook was searching for non-existent winfax logs and that's what was causing the error message. After I did this the problem was fixed and Winfax is working fine with my Windows XP sp2 and Outlook 2003. This solution may save you time and $ because they wanted to charge me $10 but after sweet talking them they waived the charge. I suggested they put this solution on their website but I think they really want you to call them and pay for help. Other than the above issue, I have used Winfax for years and found the software to be of great use to my home-based business. It does exactly as it was described to do.

"No longer being sold", WinFax PRO has been discontinued by Symantec. Do not purchase this software unless you are willing to use a discontinued software package.

"This product will make you hate life", Winfax Pro has caused me more headaches than any other single piece of software. It is buggy and slow and crashes at the drop of a hat. As far as I can tell, it is essentially unmaintained by Symantec; I don't think they actually plan on fixing any of the many major bugs, and are just milking this old, old codebase for as long as suckers continue to pay good money for it. Beware!

"pathetic piece of garbage", how anybody or any company can publish (in the 10th version in this
case!) such an overpriced and underperforming piece of garbage is unbelievable!

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Danger...Will Robinson....Danger", This program is great if that is all you need on your system. Do not expect Outlook to function PERIOD with Winfax 10 installed. It will lock it up like a conficted serial killer. The program itself is pretty functional despite a few operational bugs. But you just can have a program that doesn't play well with others no matter how nice its features.

"Not So Bad...At Least For Me", I have read all of the reviews on how terrible Winfax is supposed to be and I'll admit it does have its share of problems. But, what software doesn't.

I have just purchased a new HP Pavilion ZD8000 Window Media Center PC and I installed WinFax 10.0 and I have not had the problems others have had. Then again, I am only an occasional WinFaxer. Perhaps my opinion will change once I get more involved and regularly use the product.

That being said, the only real problem that I have is that it doesn't take advantage of my DSL connection. We have sent faxes over a DSL line successfully, so it is possible to do. We have installed the software the 1st time, so it is possible to do. We have been up and running in minutes, so that too is possible to do.

I am a very seasoned computer programmer and can probably solve most software problems, but I simply have not had to fix this software. That's my two cents worth....

The great Kabudah has spoken!

"Do Not Buy This Software", I am running Windows XP and I purchased the 10.2 pack, which, after installing, failed to work. Symantec offered no help, despite spending about three hours searching their website and calling. When I called someone finally answered the phone after endless phone menu's but gave me another number to call. Then, after many more phone menu's I was connected with another person who was barely audible and who hung up on me. Basically, there is no help from Symantec online, or by phone. (There is a charge for the phone call, but I never got that far before he hung up, thank goodness.) The program never worked and even the tech person I use for my business could not get the program running correctly. Unless you enjoy spending hours of wasted time getting no where, I would not recommend buying this product.

If given the option, I would have rated this zero stars, because it does not even deserve one. I hope this review saves someone else the expense and frustration I have experienced.

"Buyer beware", I am not new to computers. I am used to fixing many kinds of software problems in Windows. This is not an easy product to install on a Windows XP system, especially after it has been upgraded to SP2. If you are expecting to simply install this product, reboot your computer, and start faxing, you will be sorely disappointed. Despite warnings in many other reviews, I purchased v10.03 for use on my Windows XP system with SP2. While I was able to eventually get it installed and running, it slowed my computer's reboot time to a crawl and trashed my scanner software. It took several hours to get most things working again.

First off, you should not try to install anything less than version 10.03 on an XP system. Symantec warns you about this on their web site. If you insist on purchasing WinFax Pro - which I do not recommend - make sure you buy version 10.03.

Secondly, WinFax Pro conflicts with the built-in Windows Fax program in Win XP. You will need to uninstall Windows Fax (which can be done through Control Panel's Add/Remove programs, but you need to look for it in the Add/Remove Windows Components section) to get WinFax Pro to function properly.

Third, after you install WinFax Pro your computer may take forever to reboot. It looks like it is hung up in this process, but if you go do something else for a while it will eventually reboot. I have not figured out why it does this, but it has definitely slowed my computer reboot time to a crawl.

Fourth, if you have a scanner, it may trash your scanner software (it certainly did mine - HP Scanjet 6300C). Symantec's web site has information about this in their knowledge base for WinFax Pro, so it must happen to many others, too. I did not use their fix, though, as I could not find updated twain.dll and twain_32.dll files that they recommend using to replace the ones they screwed up. Instead, I uninstalled and then reinstalled my scanner's installation software. I had to run Symantec's SystemWorks software to find/fix Windows problems and reinstall the scanner drivers a few times before it worked, but eventually I got the scanner working again. WinFax seems to have permanently disabled my scanner's buttons for doing quick operations, though. I have not found a way to restore button function. But I can scan with the Precision Pro software that is part of HP's available software downloads on their web site.

As far as I can tell, after fixing the above-mentioned problems, WinFax Pro 10.03 does seem to work okay. It does not appear to be any improvement over prior versions of WinFax, so unless you have upgraded to Windows XP you will not likely find it worthwhile to upgrade. As many others have stated before me, this is very buggy software that causes many problems with Windows XP and will be horribly frustrating for anyone trying to install and use this software on an XP system. BUYER BEWARE!

"WinFax: great product but it doesn't work SEE ADDENDUM", I have struggled to learn to use many software products however winfax has clearly been the most problematic. Since it was a symantec product I thought it probably was good but I must be doing something wrong. I struggled with the fix to allow it to work with MS word and it would work for a while. Then there would be feezes and crashes or it would just not send faxes. I would reboot to no avail. I would turn off all other programs but to no avail. I tried to find a solution on symantecs web site but to no avail. It must be Windows ME so I put it on Windows XP. It would stop sending faxes for no apparent reason. I tried it on windows 98; again, it would stop sending faxes for no apparent reason. I would try to use it a day or so later and it would work fine for a while. I should have read some of these reviews before I wasted my time. It really should be taken off the market. My question to everyone is which program is usable? Does Communicate Deluxe function?
Thanks.

Addendum:
2/20/2006: Since my original review I was amazed to find a large community hospital who uses this program to send faxes to all ~1000 doctors on staff. They use XP professional as the OS but the key point was to DELETE all faxes from WINFAX SEND LOG FOLDER after they are sent. This seems to allow me to use the program 99.9% of the time. However, it somewhat defeats the purpose of keeping records of what you have faxed. What I now do is scan documents into "paperport" and place the document in a folder labeled IBM and fax it to IBM using Winfax and then delete the sent fax from the winfax folder. I still have a copy of the fax in paperport in the "IBM" folder. It is much simpler than it sounds. I now use paperport 7.0 and winfax daily in my laptop and you can connect any scanner and printer. The beauty of this arrangement is that I take all my files with me in my laptop and can add items or do other work at home using another printer/scanner. Needless to say, backup is critical. By the way, I asked the hospital how they discovered that deleting the faxes from winfax after sending would work and apparently Winfax Support told them. I guess this changes my rating from a ONE star to a THREE or FOUR STAR system. Another useful feature of winfax is it can support 2 modems, one for incoming and one for outgoing faxes. This would be useful in a very busy office and would of course require 2 modems and 2 phone lines. The brother system below can not support 2 modems, but this is not an important point for most small offices.

Another very useful system is a Brother MFC 9770 which came with paperport 6.5 and receives faxes directly into the computer into paperport. I then have to manually "drag and drop" the faxes into an appropriate folder (or create one) where it is stored on the computer. You can scan faxes into the computer in paperport, place them in an appropriate folder and then fax them meanwhile retaining a copy for your records. I have had some minor problems with the brother MFC but am so impressed with the simplicity of this filing system that I bought their flagship monochromatic laser MFC 8440DN [comes with paperport 9 deluxe NOT professional] and am ready to start using it. I'm hoping this will also work 99.9% of the time.
Good Luck.
