"Great but need to update the software", I purchased this for my 9 and 10 year olds as a supplement to help with their homeschool geography lessons. They absolutely love it. I have to tear them away to get them to do their other work. The only issue is that it does not seem to be compatible with later versions of Windows (XP - in our case), so the program frequently freezes and requires a restart which is very frustrating for the children.

"Your CD cover image is incorrect!", I bought this product under the pretense it was the Carmen Sandiego game from 1996, simply based on the description and jewel case cover photo. I was sent a copy of the game made in 2001.

The updated version is a perfectly workable game. I just wanted the one I played back in middle school!

"Windows XP Instructions", First uninstall the game (if it's installed) then proceed.


- Click Start
- Click My Computer
- Right-click on your CD drive icon
- Click Search
- Type *.exe
- Press Enter then wait for the search to complete

About 18 files should have been found.
For each of those files, perform the following six steps:

1. Right click on the file
2. Click Properties
3. Click on the Compatibility tab
4. Check the box next to "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"
5. Choose Windows 95 from the drop-down list
6. Click OK


(Yes, you need to repeat those six steps for every file.)


That's it.
Now the game should install and work fine.
Be sure to install QuickTime when asked to during the installation process.



NOTE:

While playing the game, the video clips are likely to be of lower quality than they would be on an actual Windows 95 computer.

This is because your display is automatically switched to 256-color mode when the game starts, and Windows XP won't allow the video clips to play using 16-bit color while the game is running in 256-color mode.
Windows 95, however, does allow this.

If you discover a way to force XP to show the clips in 16-bit color, please post instructions.


"Where in the World is the old Carmen Sandiego Game?", I prefer playing the old game that came out in the 80s/90s. This game was too cartoonish.

"My inner child", Used to play this game when I was little, so I thought I'd take a stroll down memory lane. It's not as exciting as I used to remember it, but it still brings out my inner child.

"My kids loved this one!", My kids love Carmen Sandiego games. I don't know how much real learning gets inside because, once they figure it out, they skip the words that talk about history, geography, etc (we have more than one Carmen Sandiego game), but they love it and I'm sure enough sticks. Much better game than the "shoot-em-ups" that is so difficult to get them away from.

"Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego? ", great eucational games my children do not even relize they are learning

"Have I installed it wrong?", I enjoy playing the game and testing my knowledgee of the countries of the world. However, when "the chief" is talking she "stutters" and repeats her words - which is very distracting.
I have thought of contacting the manufacturer and asking for another copy of the game but - did I install the game wrong (?). I removed it from my hard-drive and reinstalled it - with the same result.
Please send me another copy and I'll try it. Other than this problem - the game runs fine.

"Carmen takes the cake", The graphics aren't fancy, but the educational opportunities with this game are great. My 7 year old daughter loves this game- she likes to speak words in all different languages and she knows now where Crete is! I like the kinds of games that teach my kids while they are having fun and this one does just that. (I'm learning a few things as well!)

"item is in good condition but not workable", i guess i didn't realize that carmen san diego software is somewhat old and newer systems have much updated fancier versions of quicktime, that will not run carmen. making this cd completely non usable.!!!

i have recently bought a mac, but know that this will also probably not work since mac also has very updated version of quicktime, also resolution has to be dummied down to only 256 colors, it is non operable in millions of colors that all new pc and mac systems have.

the main point: make sure older game software is compatible.

also thank goodness i did not spend much.
