"Bad Crowes" Lickin is the only good song on this CD! I will sell mine!
"Sorry.. Just Didn't Get It" ???? What the h*ll is this? Giving 'Lions' any stars was a stretch, but I'll at least give it 1 for "Soul Singin'". The rest isn't even filler. What happened? It's taken me 4 years to write this review as I couldn't muster the strength to speak of this monstrosity 'til now. I've been a huge Crowes fan from the Mr. Crowe's Garden days and have always defended the band when it tended to dive off of the deep end musically. The only thing I can compare this to was a musical root canal---w/no anethstetic---SERIOUSLY painful from beginning to end. All Crowes fans know how brilliant the first 3 releases are, so I needn't touch on those. Going forward...TS&AC was interesting sonically in its drugged out approach and contained more than a couple of gems. The follow-up, 'By Your Side', was an incredibly strong effort and I thought...h*ll yeah, they're back with a vengeance!! Can't begin to tell you how psyched I was to get 'Lions' on its release date. When I slipped it in my truck's CD player I was aghast at what I heard...track after wretched track. It was a long trip home from where I had bought the disk, so I gave it a 2nd listen in hopes I had missed something the first time around...nope, bad idea. The 2nd was more nauseating than the 1st. Needless to say, after finishing that 2nd gruelling listen, I put the disk back in its case, (reluctantly) slapped it in my CD collection never to pull it out and listen again. However, in closing, I just wanna say how ecstatic I am that the Crowes are back playing together again and I'm looking forward to the next release. I've waited 4 long years, which will most likely turn to 5. I can say with all confidence that the next one's gonna be a return to glory. I've got faith in ya Chris 'n Rich. Bring back the rock the way only the Crowes know how to deliver!!
"Black Crowes Power At It's BEST!!!" Lions... one of the most under rated CD by the Black Crowes. If you love the Black Crowes, then you will love this CD. If you Love pure ROCK and ROLL with a little Soul... the you will love LIONS!!! "Soul Singing, Miracle To Me, Lickin, Midnight From the Inside Out, Cypress Tree" are all GREAT classic Rock and Roll with a little Soul tracks. This CD is one that you will never put down. Go get it TODAY!!!
"Good Vibes." Lions starts out as a bit of a departure for the Crowes. Midnight From the Inside Out and Lickin' have an almost grunge feel and combined with bland, but upbeat rocker Come On, it almost sounds as if the Crowes are trying to fit in with the current music climate for the first time. However, the album stretches out after that to include an array of funky tunes, psychedelic songs and ballads, giving the whole disc a fresh, scattered feel to it, even if the production is a touch glossy.
As the spectrum of great sounds is the strength of the album, the band seem more into stretching out and playing than in songwriting. Soul Singing stands out as as good a song they've written in several years, but much of the rest of the album feels unfinished and really for the first time, the band sounds a bit too casual. Still, it's a reassuring feeling in the end to get the impression the Crowes are doing what they want just for the fun of it and while not up to their normal standards, Lions does emit plenty of good vibes.
"Professional Music Critic's Critique" Psychedelic rock with a tinge of humor, depth, darkness, and spontenaity that isn't too hard to swallow nor too easy to relegate to background music.
LIONS makes you sit up, listen, and take a deeper look at one's personal society all while you tap your feet and nod your head.
4 out of 5 stars

What our customer's say!
"Cracks showing....", It's my feeling that the Black Crowes were struggling with a lot of stuff before and during the making of this CD. The brothers Robinson weren't getting along (have they ever...LOL) and the band had seen a lot of their sales decrease with each album past "Southern Harmony..." It was probably thought that a label change and a new producer, Don Was, would revive their creativeness and, hopefully, sales of their new material.
Despite the mismatch of producer and artist, I still think "Lions" is a good CD. I like many of the songs and even though the production is a bit too slick for my taste, I enjoy listening to this CD. "Soul Singing" is a particular favorite.
I had the pleasure of seeing the Crowes open for Dave Matthews Band recently, so I came back to this CD to listen to it after they played a couple of songs from it live. My overall opinion is that it's not their best work, but it's a good listen (I don't think they ever really made a bad album, anyway).
"2 1/2 stars", This is Black Crowes worst album, hands down. I LOOOOoooVvvvEeee the Black Crowes. The soul of the band is compromised with this album, though there are a few very good songs. Black Crowes are best on the "By Your Side" "Southern Harmony and Musical Companion" and "Three Snakes and One Charm" albums. "Shake Your Money Maker" and "Amorica" are also very good. I expect raw, hard, blues-soul-rock by these talented fellows. Their most recent effort, "Warpaint," is quality, but not the harder Black Crowes that I love.
I'd love to hear another "By Your Side" or "Southern Harmony and Musical Companion" or "Three Snakes and One Charm" by this band (without exactly repeating themselves, which they never have).
"Easily the most Underated Crowes album", This is an excellent album. The band is in fine form...especially after that Shake Your Money Maker retread(which is what you get working with a caveman LOL). Although I personally miss Johnny Colt and Marc Ford...their replacements are slouches by no measure. The songwriting is quite good...some fine, fine...soopafine material here. Lickin' is one of my all time faves. The glossy, almost poppy dance mix production really freshens an sging sound. Most of the tracks run into eachother, making the album hard to turn off. So take me down to the Greasy Grass River Baby...just make sure you bring some Crowes.
"Everybody...", ...including Hendrix, Zappa, James Brown, Stones, George Clinton, and many others can be heard influencing this album, which is never imitative but always unique and very spiritual, with references from Milton and Dante to William Blake and Sitting Bull's dance prior to Custer's Last Stand. From the screeching feedback that introduces "Midnight from the Inside Out", les freres robinson can be scary, nasty-hot ("Lickin') the ultimate putdown artists (No Use Lyin') and still breathe monstrous life into a little funky thang y'all ("Ozone mama"). The soul journey that seems to begin on "Greasy Grass River" flows though Electric Ladyland and creates a veritable Stairway to Heaven, and we are dropped in the water, freed, redeemed, and blessed..."Soul Singing", "Cosmic Friend" mix funk and rhythm and blues with psychedelia, as someone else has mentioned, wandering into a Sly Stone-like brilliance, but much modernized and somehow ethereal while heavy at the same time. Wow. Very impressed. These fellows are certainly masters of their craft, and also OUT THERE with Don Was, who really knows how to open up a studio recording. (Check out Brian Wilson's "I Guess I Just Wasn't Made For These Times"--I mean the album from the mid-80's, not the Pet Sounds song.) Where have I been? I needed this album back in 2001! I gotta lotta catchin up to do!
"After many listens....the truth is evident (and not common)", This disc is much better than most of the reviews on Amazon.com give it credit for. Actually, IMHO this is the bands best set since their sophomore effort. Why?? Because they push the comfortable boundaries of traditional "Southern Rock" cliches and yet still remain loyal to the spirit of the sound. If you like the band but were turned off by this album I challenge you to give it a second listen.

"The brothers Robinson do it one last time...or is it???", Lions is a fantastic rock and roll album considering the time period it came out. This is the Crowes at their musical best and the production is very raw and not too polished. And since it is the Crowes, their are no signs here of selling out or compromising their sound to sound like everyone else to make money.Once again, the Crowes show off their excellent musicianship and Chris howls and wails with so much emotion and energy.A great deal of variety is available on this album. You got your 70s style aerosmith/faces-like straight ahead rockers like "midnight","come on" and "lickin".skynyrd's southern swagger and zeppelin's acoustic wizardry in tracks like "cypress tree","soul singin","miracle to me","greasy grass",and "lay it all on me".even "young man old man blues" is a great funky track with an uplifting outro.
All in all, despite my comparisons of other bands to the crowes, these guys have their own sound and identity and are truly an amazing band which doesn't compromise for the critics. The Crowes were the last great rock n roll band and here's to hoping all these rumours of them reuniting are true.Great album.
"Crowes become FUN!", You might hear complaints about selling out or glossy production effects, but in a weird way, this might be the Crowes best album. The rudimentary Faces/Stones-like sound of the first album is gone and so is the languid Allman-esque jamming of the later albums. This has ben replaced by a sort of Zepplin meets "Fresh"-era Sly Stone approach with vintage 70's metallic riffs which are balanced by a very funky beat. There's also Stax/Motown horns, female back-up singer choruses, cartoony P-Funk refrains and Chris Robinsons best vocals ever (he's actually learned to harness his already amazing voice). This record is much more focused than previous attempts with really modern sounding production and some very tight pop sounding tunes. If this isn't their best record, it is definitely their most interesting and most fun.
"Crowes Swan Song??", If this is to be the last album the Black Crowes ever put out, I will say they went out on a very high note. To me, Lions has a sound that harkens back to a sound closer to Amorica then some of thier recent work. It is down and dirty rock and roll at its best. Some have said that playing live with Jimmy Page lit a fire back under the Crowes, and I tend to agree with that. From the first time I played this disc, I liked it. Hell, from the opening riff off Midnight... I liked this disc. While the Black Crowes might not longer be around,(although Ive heard they could be regrouping) they certanly left a body of work to be proud of.
"Not bad", By far the BEST Crowes album without Marc Ford. Better than three snakes too...
"Good Send Off", If this is indeed to be "The Crowes" last album, it's a good note to go out on. The entire band seems very at ease and you can tell. "Midnight From The Inside" has Rich Robinson's guitar fuzzed out to the max and sounds like an actual live take(I think it was). "Lickin'" is the catchiest song here, sounding like Skynyrd at their sleaziest, with Chris Robinson rasping where he never has before. The mellow numbers are where the Robinson Bros. really shine. The gospel sound of "Soul Singing" and the weepy "Miracle To Me" recall Zeppelin in their prime, without just retracing steps. Of course, when The Black Crowes are involved, they real question is "Can't we all just get along?" If only they could...
