"Great program for all levels!"
This program is very easy to work with, and our whole family --- from teen techie to old mom and dad --- have found we can use it.
Great price, great program.

"Has most of the Photoshop power you probably need"
I have used Painter 6.0, Painter Classic, Ulead, and a few other image processing packages that are typically bundled along when you buy a scanner or other digital device. So I am not a complete novice at graphics. From what I can tell, Photoshop Elements is not exactly novice-level because I used some previously acquired knowledge to tweak a photo. And I still had to check the help file to figure out a couple of things that weren't obvious. However, it seems a lot simpler than Photoshop full-version and it wasn't all that hard to get started.

You can do dodging, burning, stitching (putting pictures together, such as panorama sequence shots) and equalization with very much ease. The tool set is not hard to use. The adjustments to the brush sizes are quick and easy--just pull down a size palette and adjust your dodging, blurring or other tool in one click.

Most of the features I would normally use are here, plus the ability to do some artsy stuff like converting a picture to a colored-pencil drawing, adding plug-ins (third party software for effects) and more.

If you are willing to put in a bit of time, maybe get an accessory how-to book, I think this software is a pretty good deal. It is probably most of the Photoshop power most people will need unless they go full-bore into digital imaging. For me, it is more than adequate and I really like it.

"Elements is crippled for left-handers"
I bought the program because I liked Photoshop Deluxe which came with my scanner. I wanted more features. Elements does have nice features but beware if you're left-handed. The Quick Start menu, the Recipes Palette, for starters don't work unless you change your mouse settings to right-handed. This is something Adobe could have easily corrected with a patch. I searched all over the Adobe web site, but alas! there doesn't seem to be a patch. It may be corrected in version 2.0, but if you already have version 1.0 you'll have to buy the newer version to get the fix, if there is one. None of the books about Photoshop Elements including the book that comes with the program mention the left-hand problem. I spent hours installing and re-installing the program until I found out about the leftie problem in Adobe's knowledge base. I will probably keep the program but I don't have kind thoughts for Adobe.

"Photoshop for Dummies"
I found this program very easy to use and the instructional manual clear and concise. Graphic quality is exceptional and cropping and editing have never been easier. My one problem is the ...dollar rebate. Amazon never tells you what products you must own prior to purchasing this program. I was just lucky that I had what Adobe required for the rebate. Otherwise, I would have just kept using what I normally do.

"It all depends on what you're looking for"
Usage-wise, it deserves 5 stars, but Adobe gets docked a point for marketing this as an entry-level program. It is Photoshop stripped of expensive features, not Photoshop simplified for novice users.

This is a program targeted at a mid-level graphics enthusiast. If you've only used programs like PhotoDeluxe in the past, expect a huge change. Comparing the two is a bit like comparing apples to oranges. PhotoDeluxe is designed for quick, easy editing of photos with lots of automation and "smart" tools. Photoshop Elements is designed for creating graphics, and there aren't a whole lot of automated functions. You *will* need to fiddle with settings.

A lot of tools and options are hidden in flyout tabs, or in keyboard controls (alt/shift/ctrl are quite necessary to do certain things). Not particularly intuitive, but it doesn't clutter up your screen space and it only takes a few clicks or keystrokes to change tools or settings. It's a good feature if you work on a lot of large images or don't like to interrupt your creative process by dealing with menus and dialog boxes.

I'd highly recommend this program for people who are interested in learning how to create good computer/web graphics and don't mind putting some time in. The help files aren't the greatest, but there's a wealth of tutorials on the Internet for those who are more ambitious. You'll also get more use out of the help files if you take the time to note the specific names and terms of the various tools and functions (mouse over the tools to see the titles). There's a nice window whose sole purpose is to explain a bit about the tool you have selected.

The transition from Paint Shop Pro was pretty straightforward. Most times I would have both programs open and copy images back and forth to get the best of both worlds. There is no layer masking in Photoshop Elements, which can be annoying. However, the painting and selection tools are a bit better in Photoshop Elements, and the "Save for Web" option will give you better output with less effort.

If you're considering this because you can't afford Photoshop, I'd say go for it. You get a lot of bang for your buck, and it'll ease the transition to from lower-end graphics applications. However, don't give up saving for the real thing!

In a nutshell -

Serious hobbyists or aspiring professionals should look into buying this program.

Casual users looking mainly for an easy photo solution should shop around for a while longer. You probably won't use most of the features Photoshop Elements has to offer.

"Photoshop Elements 1", I highly advised if your not experience with the program you might want to take a class on it or buy newer versions of this Adobe product. It does not ask for you to backup your orignal file before editing. I high recommend making a backup of your photo file before making changes to the Photo.

I bought this program to run on Windows XP and below for my own evaluation.

"WARNING: ships configured for Mac", I got this program bundled with a pen tablet and thought "Cool, an upgrade to my PhotoDeluxe". I immediately installed it and used it for about a minute before it crashed. I did a bunch of internet searches (including Adobe's site) to find out if anyone else experienced this...nothing.

Fast forward about six months: I decided to open the program once again and narrowed down the problem to the "eyedropper" or the "color picker". After checking the help menu, there is a tiny paragraph tucked away that says something like "If you're using a Windows machine, change the default Adobe "color picker" to the Windows "color picker". Sure enough, the Abobe color picker was causing the program to crash on my WinXP machine! Seems to me, that there should have been a note somewhere on the outside of the CD warning about this, considering Windows machines are used by at least 80% of the world.

Then...it also took me forever to figure out how to go about outlining objects/selections. Instead of keeping the name "Outline" (like in PhotoDeluxe), Elements changed it to "Stroke" and took it out of the effects list (it's now banished to one of the other drop down menus). Why?

Other than that, it's a great upgrade to PhotoDeluxe that includes a GIF animation maker, a "liquifier" effect (same thing as Kai's "Goo") and tons of other stuff you'll probably never use.

"Adobe Photoshop Elements", I bought Photoshop Elements about a year ago, after running Adobe PhotoDelux for years. I tried it and did not like it at all. It's much more complex than PhotoDelux and required different commands to do the same operations. I did not want to learn a new photo software editing package. So I stopped using it about a year ago. However, a month ago, I got a new computer (2.8Ghz) running WinXP; unfortunately, XP will NOT run PhotoDelux and Adobe no longer supports it. So I was forced to get out the Photoshop Elements and loaded it on the XP machine. Now I have to learn photo editing all over again. The software runs much faster, which takes some of the pain out of the process, but it is hard to do things that were simple in PhotoDelux. They changed all the keyboard shortcuts (WHY, WHY, WHY did they have to do that??!!!). Some tasks no longer have shortcuts at all and tasks that were one keystroke with PhotoDelux now take many mouse clicks. Some tasks that PhotoDelux did easily, Photoshop Elements does not do at all. For example, it places no free space gutter around pictures, which makes it hard to work on large blow up images at the pixel level. Does not do drop shadows with the shadow as an adjustable layer like PhotoDelux. The list goes on and on. If I had it to do again, I'd probably go with some other software, since I'm having to learn photo editing all over again anyway.

"Great for the person who isn't a professional", Got this program when it was first out when there was a special deal locally. I figured for [$$]it was worth a try.

I use it OFTEN and REALLY LIKE the feature that let's you save an image for the Web. It's saved me much grief and lots of hassles.

Unfortunately the help on the program stopped working and a fresh installation didn't fix the problem. Now the crop box no longer follows the cursor. (NO, I don't have a virus present.)

I'm hoping that if I update the V 2.X these problems will disappear but not counting on it.

I recommend this program if you want some reasonable power and ease of use.

"Adobe has done it again", Photoshop Elements was specifically designed to help you create high-quality web graphics. Although its environment looks a lot like Photoshop and it has many of Photoshop's same powerful features, Elements is easier to learn and use. Before Elements, I used PaintShop Pro v. 7 and was very satisfied with it. However, Photoshop Elements has become my program of choice. Most of Adobe's products are well worth the investment...this one is no exception. If you're designing any graphics for use on the web, you'll be pleased with this program.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"love it", Great program for the price. I had experience with Photoshop LE so it was easier to use than it might be for a beginner. Online help not very good.

"Terrific Program", I have about 7 different types of photo software, but none offer all of the tools that Photoshop Elements includes. While this program is a step down from Photoshop, and it's not really for a novice, it has a wealth of tools to utilize to create fabulous images from your photos et. al., including some that Photoshop doesn't have. Adobe also offers on-line help and tutorials to help you through, and there's a good number of books that can assist the user. The manual is a little tedious, but most of the fun is in discovering (by mistake!) the range of different applications that can be used on the same photo. Besides, with the rebates that are being offered, it's the best deal in town!

"Not User Friendly", I am sure this software is fine for users familiar with desktop publishing titles, but for someone who wants to exhibit, share and create photos from a scanner or digital camera, there are many others I've used that do not require prerequisite knowledge not readily available within the software. The "tutorials" are not much help either if you don't have the basics down and know what they are talking about. It was a real disappointment and an expensive lesson.

"Not stable under Windows 2000", I installed this on Windows 2000 and it worked at first. Over time I've installed other software and now it no longer works. I've spent hours and hours trying to get it to work again and no suggestsions could be found in the knowledge base that solved the problem. I've removed most of the other software on my machine, re-installed multiple times and it still refuses to start. The failure message is too cryptic to be of much help. I'm wiping the disk this weekend and will reinstall everything. I'm hopefull that I can get things running again otherwise I wasted my money as well as my time.

"Try the free preview first!", I have been using another Photoshop version (LE or Limited Edition) for about a year now and am generally very happy with it. While it is not as powerful as many professional graphics programs, it is enough for my limited use and ability. However, I've heard good things about Elements and Amazon's price (including a big rebate) was so great I decided it was time to buy it.

I ordered it and while waiting for it to arrive, decided to look into the new features and learn the basics of how it works. I went to the Adobe web site and found a 30-day trial version I could download. I installed the trial version and took a look and was surprised to basically find LE with a better interface. While it has some improvements over LE, there are not many and it was mostly just simplified editing tools. After a day of exploring and testing, I returned to Amazon and cancelled my order (sorry Amazon!)

If you don't have either of these programs and you are an amateur or novice graphics person looking for a basic graphic/photo editing program, I would definitely go with Elements -- it has everything LE has plus more. I've tried a number of other programs and Photoshop is my overwhelming favorite. For that reason it gets five stars. But my only note of caution is just for those looking to upgrade from LE. I would suggest you download the trail version first and see if it is really worth the investment. For me it wasn't, but it probably depends on what features are important to you.

And actually, even if you have not used LE, you may want to go to Adobe's web site and try it out first anyway. I appreciate when software makers do this so we can take it for a test drive. It suggests to me that Adobe is confident in their product and they believe that after trying it you will like it and want to buy it.
