Others say...

"Shame there's not a "0" star rating!"
I purchased this game for $4.99 and I would have to say that I really got my moneys worth in annoyance and utter frustration. I have installed the game twice and have the newest patches installed as well. On both occassions the game will tease me with 20-30 hours of game time and then crash when I save. THIS CRASH WILL CORRUPT ALL SAVE FILES AND YOU HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO START FROM SCRATCH OR UNINSTALL!!! The only positive I can say about this game is that I was somewhat happy when I snapped the disk in two. Don't waste your time or money on this garbage.

"Oh my gosh..."
I pop in the disc and select install. The game refuses to let me do a full installation because it says I don't have 1 gig of space free on D:\(When I clearly have 5 gigs free). So, I have to do minimal install. I then finish installing it and go to play the game, only to learn that it didn't install on D:\ drive. Apparently, I need to download a patch just to install the game to D:\. Wow, the creators sure messed up on something so fundamental. They must not have even tested the game because apparently, you can't install the game in any specified folder unless you download patch 1.1.

Then I go to play the game only to see my characters walking at 2 miles an hour. I start it up with a paladin, barbarian, and rogue tearing the place up while my mage sits down and rests. I then realize that my characters don't have their long swords equipped. This is odd because I just equipped those long swords. I look at my inventory only to learn that there is no long sword animation. I have the sword equipped but I can't see it because I guess the creators left that out or the minimal installation(which I was forced to use) must not have it. This pisses me off greatly. I then look around for quicksave. Where is quicksave? I have no clue. You can't customize your controls or something. I then give up on the game to play Icewind Dale. The games have the exact same stories, and Pool of Radiance has so many problems that I don't ever plan to play it again. Besides, if you do find a sword that does 585598250298 damage in the first dungeon, you know theres a problem.

"Kind of a Shame"
I remember fondly the time I spent on a C64 working
my way through the original Pool of Radiance. I was
really looking forward to the release of this game-
unfortunately it comes up dry in several areas. I won't
repeat what was said about the lack of variety in character
creation or the agonizingly slow path to leveling other
than to say that review is spot on. The variety of monsters
you encounter is slim, the plot is not really there at all.
Finally, the combat (the meat of this game..) is plodding and
time consuming with very little flash or drama.

Bottom line, and I am sorry to say it- unless you're just
between games and have something like "federal prison" type
time on your hands to kill- don't waste the hours of your life
playing PoR.

"Not a Real RPG"
This game is not a real RPG. Despite claiming to follow the rules of D&D 3E it does so selectively. The biggest problem is that it does not allow you to level your character on your own (pick feats, skills) - its like playing with the worst kind of DM.

This game is nothing but a dungeon crawl in a (very poor) D&D suit. Dungeon Siege is much better (and gives you more control of your character development).

"GREAT GAME"
The graphics for this game are a bit out-dated now, but this is still a GREAT GAME. I n fact, it is by far the best RPG game I have ever played. Now for the bad news, the game is agonizing UNLESS you download the three pathces from the Ubisoft website. Without these, the game cannot be completed. Additionally, the game is prone to crash at random intervals, so save often. If you can deal with the occasional crash, and you download the patches this is a must-play and very, very addictive! It is just hard enough to keep you interested but by no means too easy (boring).

"Crash dummy game", Okay, this is one of those games that crashes frequently. I have played all the way through a couple of times. The story line is good, the graphics are good, but the game is so unstable that it crashes about every 15 min. on my computer. The scroll down spell lists are a pain in the .... while in the turn base combat. There are a shortage of quick key options in this game and I seem to waste a lot of time walking back and fort to areas that should have a short cut (most areas do not respawn). A recall spell of some kind would make this game so much more bearable. This game would take considerably less time if you didn't spend so much time walking your characters from one corner of the world to the other without even having one encounter.
I really like the story line, but there aren't very many things you can do for extra XP. This game had all the makings of a great game but fell incredably short because of a crashing problem and so far to walk with nothing to kill.
Like I said I did play this game through a couple of times, but it is a slow play. The multi-character part of this game is okay, but it seems like my wizard always ends up first through the door or on the front lines when combat starts. There is no way to prevent this flaw that I have found. This game is fun if you can look beyond the crashes and the constant walking and the characters blocking the leader and the weakest character always going first no matter what you do to stop it. Neverwinter Nights is a much better game in my opinion or even Heritic Kingdom, but any game will have its flaws and this one has several, but it is still fun to play

"After years of patches...", When this came out I wholeheartedly agree with the previous reviewers here--- and then some! It was awful, buggy, and slow. Now with computers much faster than the specifications required and with 4 count 'em, 4 official patches later, one having been released fairly recently by the distributer-- it's a little better. It is at least playable. You may get better play by turning off anti-aliasing features in your video card.

If you have the discs collecting dust or see it in a 99 cent bargain bin, it might be worth satisfying any residual curiosity. There are still a lot of aggravating aspects, but one thing that was good was the background artwork for the time. People disappointed with it when it came out should be aware of patches up to version 1.4

There are also some good mods out there for changing your character icons.

Unfortunately, it still does not hold a candle to the classic 8-bit gold box game.

"Yeah, maybe the worst game I've ev er played...", Lets disect the product summary...
*The player must create a party of six adventurers and explore the haunted elven ruins of Myth Drannor in order to stop the Pool's evil influence.
This was the best part of the game - making characters.

Pool of Radiance 2 is the first game to use the Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition rules.
*But Ubisoft didn't apply these rules correctly.

Playable character classes are Fighter, Barbarian, Paladin, Ranger, Cleric, Sorcerer, Monk, and Rogue, while the races include Half-Orc, Human, Halfling, Dwarf, Elf, and Half-Elf. Characters advance from 1st to 16th levels, allowing spellcasters access to 8th-level spells.
*I wouldn't call what they sold me as "playable".

As you explore the ancient ruins of Myth Drannor, the Dungeon Master will communicate all important events and findings.
*The DM doesn't communicate to you that you probably want to kill yourself for paying for this hunk of garbage.

Combat is based on turns, just as in the tabletop game.
*Except that the tabletop game is fun.

With a great single-player campaign as well as multiplayer support, Pool of Radiance 2 is ready to carry on the legacy of the famous Gold Box games and lead D&D RPGs into the era of 3rd Edition rules.
*Legacy?! Bwahahaha!!! Yeah, right!!!! I'll never purchase anything from Ubisoft again!

I spent $60.00 for the "Gold" edition as soon as it was released. The Horror!!!! At least it came with a lame music soundtrack and a dice bag, which I've since lost!

"TOTALLY HORRIFIC WASTE OF MONEY", WOW! I wasted my money on this piece when it first came out. I just bought it because it was a D & D RPG and I remember the old PoR (Yes, I am an old man). I am so glad that everyone (or most people) agree with me. This game sucks especially because the gameplay is SLOOOOW!

"How much can you slow the action in an RPG?", I have owned this game for quite some time but because I was involved in playing several other RPG's I just got around to trying it and boy was I dissappointed. This has to be the slowest game play ever. If you don't mind playing 30 minutes to kill one monster (maybe a SLIGHT exageration) then this games for you. I played for several hours and never made it past level one (and I didn't die). I will be archiving this game in my trash can never to be mistaken for something I might like to play again.

"Uninspired", I didn't hate this game as much as most of the reviewers here, but I must agree that it was a disappointment.

For what it's worth, I've had none of the technical problems that others have described (crashes, lockups, etc.). The user interface is certainly less than ideal, but it's workable. And yes, the load times are ridiculous, but that by itself isn't enough to ruin a game. And the AI is terrible, but there are RPGs with poor AI that are still great games (e.g., Neverwinter Nights).

So what's the problem? It's an endless stream of uninspired hack-and-slash. The puzzles rarely amount to more than "find the right key to open the door" - and you can be sure that the key will be arbitrarily located in a random chest on the other side of the dungeon. Roleplaying is almost nonexistent, and when it does come into play, it's usually pretty hackneyed stuff. You spend most of your time wandering around a gigantic, inconveniently designed dungeon, hacking your way through either ridiculously wimpy or ridiculously powerful undead. Strategy (if you can call it that) ultimately boils down to saving your game before each battle and replaying it until you win.

So while the engine itself isn't a total disaster (though it could certainly be better), the game that they designed for it is. The Baldur's Gate series did the isometric AD&D thing MUCH better, and Neverwinter Nights takes computer-based D&D to a whole new level. Unless you're just looking for a cheap way to kill a lazy weekend, don't waste your money on this yawner.

"One of SSI's worst efforts.", Ok, let me start by saying that it is extremely rare for me to return a computer game to the store, especially after owning it for less than a week, but this is not your average game. It is by far the worst RPG (if not worst game) i have ever played, and the the last time i saw this many bugs was AREA 51 for DOS. It hangs, it crashes, the gameplay slows to a crawl, then picks back up, etc...This game is a production nightmare. Seriously, didn't anyone beta test this thing? It takes literally about 45 minutes to install (even on a system that is about twice as fast as the RECOMMENDED specs). You could prepare a small meal in the time it takes to install. The thing takes up anywhere from 750MB to 1.5 G on harddrive space, a fact which completely baffles me. (granted I got about 1/30th of the way through the game). It must be the depth of the game cause it sure .... isnt' the sound (which sounds like it was recorded by Alvin and the Chipmunks in their bathroom) or the video (which is nice, but not that nice).
so back to production flaws. There is no setup utility to allow you to tinker with things like sound card specs, or resolution, or the like, and the in-game options menu is a joke as well. As many people have stated, if you are unlucky enough to have version 1.1, the thing wipes your system files when it uninstalls. Lucky for me i got version 1.2. woohoo. Onto gameplay, the real reason i am dumping this game.
THe game is so complicated difficult it just blows the mind. The first dungeon is ENOURMOUS, and nearly every enemy encountered is considerably stronger than you are. This leads to the drudgery of having to save every few minutes (especially annoying in a game without a quicksave feature. In probably about 20 hours of play, i just barely made it out of the first level of the first dungeon. After being annihilated 10 consecutive times on first encounter of the second level, i deceided to throw in the towell. ANother failure is the instruction manual, obviously geared toward people familiar with D&D which i am not. It makes no effort to give you even the slighest introduction to the actual mechanics of the game (dice rolls, etc.) The maps are so large that after having gone off on a side quest, it took me half an hour to find my way back to the level exit. Another really sad aspect of this game, particularly for RPG players, is that in a game that is so combat-oriented, any class other than barbarian, figher, or cleric is almost useless. Socercers and monks particularly gain good abilities at high levels, but it is next to impossible to even have them survive that long. Gamplay summed up: it is like trying to climb a mountain while dragging a piano tied to your waist.
When i think of the SSI games i enjoyed when i was younger such as Dungeon Hack, Pools of Darkness, and The Shattered Lands (still my favorite RPG of all time), Pool of radiance really stands out as a pitiful effort. On a side note, this game has more than the usuall number of problems encountered when trying to run older games on windows XP. I believe however, that this is mostly the fault of microsoft. Bottoms line? you are better off spending the money to see the latest Jennifer Lopez movie. [.......].

"Fun, if you bother to save every three minutes.", I will never buy another UBIsoft game. I expected an at least playable game. My state-of-the-art computer still crashes when I play the game, at least twice every hour. Crashes are minimized by turning the sound off. That helps, for what it's worth.

I can't believe that I bought such a bug-ridden, crash-prone game. I spent at least 200 hours playing the original pool of radiance game. I wish this game had at least managed to give me 2 hours of fun.

BTW, Ubisoft released a patch that was supposed to help with all of these complaints. I downloaded and installed it. It did not help.

Steer clear, unless you can get it for three or four bucks.

"Baldur's Gate on Valium", I wanted to like this game. I really did. I was so excited when I got it. It was one of the first games to use 3rd Edition Rules Ad&D, complete with an old-school turn based combat system. My excitement would quickly turn to disgust, though.

It becomes apparent that this game was rushed right when you first create your party. The characters look utterly bland and generic, and customizability is extremely limited (ooo, my mage can have either a blue robe or black robe). Conspicuously missing are the Druid, Bard, and Wizard classes. Why these were not included is beyond me, and takes away from the authenticity and depth of the game. Also, you are not able to choose your own feats. For those who are unfamiliar with 3rd edition rules, feats are special abilities that you gain upon leveling up that enhance your character. Normally, you can choose which feats to take, but in this game they're all chosen for you as you level up. Ridiculous.

Things don't get any better after that. You're immediately thrust into a battle upon starting the game. Battles are full-turn based, with one character taking an action, then the next, etc, etc. Combat is excruciatingly long. Character animations are slow...prepare to be bored to tears while waiting for fifteen zombies to slowly lurch across the playfield before you can take any action (and wait again the next time around). The most frustrating aspect of combat, though, is the miss rate of your physical combatants. It's not uncommon to go a few rounds with all of your party memebers hitting absolutely NOTHING. In a real-time game like Baldur's Gate, this isn't so bad, since everything is happening at once, but in a game like this, it can make what should be simple and quick battles take FOREVER. After about ten minutes of both sides swinging at each other like they were playing pinata, I finally kill the three or four orcs at the beginning of the game and am rewarded with about 20xp for each of my party members. It takes 1000 to reach level 2. Needless to say, leveling is painfully slow. Expect to play for hours and hours without advancing a single level, even early on when leveling should be relatively quick. In addition, to make things quite lopsided, you'll find troves of uber equipment, often in the first dungeon. My level 3 Barbarian was wielding a +3 Axe at one point, which is analogous to giving an Uzi to a kindergartener, and a practice any self-respecting DM would stay far away from.

My biggest gripe with this game is magic and magic-based classes. As I stated before, the Wizard class is completely absent from the game. While the Sorcerer is a great class in its own right, the Wizard adds an old school and authentic feel, and it's sorely missed in this game. Aside from that, what IS there isn't much to write home about, either. Upon looking at my game's manual, I was appalled at the paltry collection of spells available to spellcasters. NO level 9 spells, and few higher level spells, with no creative or innovative spells whatsoever. Spellcasters themselves also leave a lot to be desired. In short, don't pick a Sorcerer for your party unless you want to be lugging around a dead weight xp hog with the durability of tissue paper for a very good portion of the game. Early on, your caster will start with at the very most 6 hit points, and cannot wear any sort of armor. This means that if an orc decides to turn his axe on our robed buddy, he won't last much longer than a round or two. The said orc while also laugh mockingly with when the sorcerer tries to defend himself by shooting a pretty little red bolt at him which scratches the orc for 2 damage. The sorcerer can cast this same little red bolt 4 times before exhausting his spell reserves, making him even more helpless. He could always try attacking with his equipped weapon, but he may as well be firing a musket at a penny 100 yards away, while blindfolded. I know mages are supposed to be weak when starting out and come into their own at higher levels, but as I mentioned before, levels comes extremely slowly, so it will be a long an arduous path before your mage can actually do anything other than die. This was one of the main reasons I stopped playing in disgust, since I'm a big fan of magic users and they're practically useless for a good portion of this game.

In conclusion, an overhyped game that deserves to be forgotten. [Money] wasted that I'll never get back.

"simply the best!!!", this games is simply the best despite it's problems with crashes if you don't have a decent system or UPGRADES!!!
i wish more games would be turn based like this one, they could be so much better, you know what each player can do and have them do it, unlike balders gate, or icewinfdale 1 or 2 where they all are going at once and can't keep track of them.
i hope more come out like pool of radiance, i hope they do a part 2 and do it the same way.. if you like to take your time and play you will love this game..
