Others say...
"Bad software that needs to be upgraded" DramaticaPro probably has some good points and no doubt would help a lot IF I COULD SEE IT!!!
The screen resolution is so bad that I contacted the company to find out how to get larger fonts on the screen and they told me it couldn't be done!!!!
I adjusted the screen resolution of my computer in an attempt to be able to read the blasted thing and that helped a bit. But I really don't want giant letters in all my apps just so I can read DramaticPro.
Also, I went to the charater part [again] to do a little homework on a story I'm writing and found it way too restrictive. It has several character types but in the world of fiction, there are many more than DramaticaPro knows about. Plus, its terminology is obscure and specific to its theory. But, that is not especially helpful
What a shame, it promises so much and doesn't really deliver. A small cheap program that I used in the past is called StoryBuilder. It was a better choice as a simple way to organize index cards -- but alas -- now that Windows is into the XP phase, that softward doesn't really work anymore.
"Creative writing partner" Well, that's what this is, according to the box it comes in.
What it is not: ... a guaranteed magic wand that will grant you good literature. ... simple for everyone to use. ... a solution to the creatively challenged. ... inexpensive ... a complete waste of your money.
What it is: ... A partner, a tool, that supplements the writer's existing skills. ... not impossible to learn within a reasonable period. ... one solution to the problem of poor organizational skills. ... another way to get the juices flowing. ... arguably the best in its field. ... worth the cost if you are serious about improving as a writer.
Don't be swayed by those who say this software is difficult to use, and don't be swayed by those who say it's not. I feel that, for those who are able to use most softwares intuitively, it isn't particularly difficult. Although it isn't perfect, there are very few - if any - softwares that are. It all depends upon you. And in Dramatica's case, once you get past that hurdle it very quickly becomes a breeze to use.
No, I don't feel that it supplants my creativity. But that's more likely because I don't allow it to.
As for writer's block, there are established ways of getting over that, and - for me - they do not include the use of a computer. The main problem I have is lack of persistence of focus. And, as a cure for that, it's excellent.
What has it done for me? It's given me a much greater focus on and control over the mechanics of ordering my thoughts. Sure, I could use index cards, but they're very unwieldy. As a replacement for them, Dramatica has been more of a boon than a relational database has ever been. All the benefits without the programming.
There are different ways of using Dramatica. I've already got a good idea about my characters and how the plot progresses before I begin. Most often, I use character building and the many different reports to complement. The various input options, such as character building, are very helpful for noting down important elements and ensuring the continuity of them. I rarely use the brainstorming option, but it's there if I am well and truly mired in a loop.
To sum up: horses for riders, not so much for courses. Don't be swayed by negative or positive reviews. Use the trial version as long as you can, make sure you use it as a partner, a tool, and not the universal panacea, and you'll find out if it is right for you.
If you think it is, and decide to spend your hard earned money on it, then be prepared to work harder on your writing than you have, perhaps, before. If it only does that, I think you'll consider it money well spent.
"Overpriced, Character Creation Clunky, Obscure Terminology" I've been a user of Dramatica since earlier versions. And while I find Dramatica has some good points, I find that there are some parts of this application that are just clunky. Number 1. The character creation screens and data is just terrible. For an application of this price I would expect a little more thorough approach. I would rally like an opportunity to compile a character's background, history and personal info within the application. I'd also like to be able to flag some of these traits so that they can be added to the story or become part of subplots used in the story. For instance if a character is insecure, I'd like to add that as an emotional goal to overcome during the length of the story. I'd also like to export characters easily for use in subsequent stories. This is not easily done. In my opinion, the entire Character generation screen is useless. (I won't even go there about the UGLY selection of character portraits). Come on, for this price get some nice looking professional icons rather than those ugly clip-art ones, OR make it easier to ad your own portraits.. Have you tried importing a portrait? Its not easy let me tell you! When trying to chose an icon to represent my protagonist I had a choice between X-Men and small cheap looking pictures of ugly cartoons. Come on now.
On to the software, I like the storyforming tools. But really the terminology at points is obscure. When it says my main character's "thematic opposite to the area of John's greatest sensitivity concerns willingness to reevaluate" it would be nice if I didn't have to refer to the manual to figure out what that means. I'm not a dummy, but I would like to be able to use the software without having to refer to the HELP.
Overall, I LIKE Dramatica Pro. But its by no means an easy App to work with. Some parts seem to be deliberately obscure, and its thin on character creation and rather heavy on your wallet.
"Disappointing" If you expect to answer questions as to pigment type, oil drying time, the size of the canvas, and subject matter--don't expect a Rembrandt--or a novel either. You may find yourself disappointed as I was...
You see, I fully expected Dramatica Pro v.4 to be expert software. By definition, expert software gives some answers, much like a calculator. For example, if I enter 2+3 I should get an answer of 5. This software merely, merely, prints that I entered two values of "2" and "3" and that I must find the answer myself...Duh!
Where will it switch fore-story and back-story orders for effect? Where are does it alert me to character issues? Does it even insert all of your characters? Where can I change characters (in the same role) during the course of an epic? Does it boldly suggest a storyweaving? Does it calculate chapters, analyze development, critique or figure anything at all to help me write? No. I don't need expensive computer software to ask me how many chapters I wish for my novel and then just make me write them in. I can do that with pencil and paper.
"Try the Demo first" I was just looking for formatting software when I came across Dramatica Pro and decided it was worth a closer look. I found the demo for the program at write-bros.com, and due to other reviews, also tried the WritePro demo. I found that Dramatica Pro helped me to do all the things I try to remember to do when I'm putting together a story, and it makes it so much easier to reference, add and change things down the line. I'd have given this 5 stars if there was a module for character naming and dialogue working. Of course then it would be a total crutch. I emphatically did not like WritePro, I found it much more confining, more like a writing class than a tool to create and work on my own stories. From write-bros.com you can demo Dramatica Pro, Hollywood Screenwriter, Movie Magic Screenwriter, StoryView and Writer's DreamKit. WritePro you can demo from writepro.com, but they have no demo for FictionMaster which looks like a good program.
If you are more the old fashioned type and don't want or need help creating and writing your stories you can try WriteItNow (writeitnow.com) It has a demo too. The CD costs about $44 and its bound to be slow, it comes over from the UK. I wish that was available from Amazon.com or Amazon.com.UK but it's not.

What our customer's say!
"Enjoyed the ride but totalled the car at the end.", I'll be brief.
*) Answering the huge battery of questions forced me to look at my novel from different angles and made me reconsider direction in many scenes based on the POV of my reader. Now that was fantastic and rated five stars.
*) Storyweaving is a huge let-down. After many hours answering detailed questions where the user has to use the help button to decipher their Dramatic-specific terms, I was notified that:
[I'm not required to complete the exposition part of the Storyweaving and that I can go ahead and create my scenes.]
If I build my own scenes and chapters, what did I pay for?
Option two: I let the program build a scenario for me and let me tell you; this was a most bizarre use of the information that I so carefully crafted a provided.
Two stars for storyweaving + Five stars for everything leading up to storyweaving divided by two = Three stars.
"HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!", This product is so hyped, yet such a disappontment - hard to install, re-install and actully use. And it would seem all the company cares about is getting your money. Support is terrible. When I wanted to move it to my new computer, the serial number wouldn't work because I had already installed it on my old computer (even though I had un-installed it on my old computer before I tried to install it on my new computer). Their answer was to buy another copy!!
"Dramatica 4 reviewed at Microfilmmaker.com", "...This is a helpful program and a worthwhile investment for someone struggling from writer's block or who has difficulties organizing his or her ideas. If the user is willing to sift through the terminology, he or she will gain a useful tool to aid his or her writing..." -Jessica Lake, Microfilmmaker.com
"Not for Creativity", I tried a demo of this software from [...]. This product was totally not what I expected. I worked with this software for two days and decided to buy Power Writer instead.
You can build a story using this software by generating character templates and then answering questions about the themes and relationships within the story. You can jot notes all along the way, but I found I was writing the same thing down over and over again. Eventually that pays off when your getting towards the end and the notes are already there, but it is long, tedious, and not fun. You start with almost 33,000 possible storylines that narrow down to one and then you can map out your Chapters and export everything to a word processor to print out. You can use the print out as your personal guide and then start writing your story. Characters can be complex or straight archetype templates. I think when you get focused on the templates it narrows the possibilities for dynamic and interesting people. A hero isn't always hero-like, but it is good to know the basic archetypes. I also found the templates greatly reduce the possibilities for the story's theme and progression. I did not want my hero to only be logical and then only be able to be categorized as a do-er...these things kind of killed my storyline altogether, but I am sure it created a storyline that I could have worked with instead.
The demo does not let you print, export or save so I do not know if the reports were any good or not. I do not know if they were clear cut or just a lot of additional information I may or may not need.
I found the process a lot of boring busy work and not much fun. It has a nice interface and is easy enough to use, but it doesn't allow for a lot of creativity or research notes. The tutorial was simply a lot of reading, but easy to understand.
I highly recommend the demo...it saved me a lot of money and busy work.
"Even the demo makes this software shine", I have heard about Dramatica Pro for years and never touched it. Now, I finally gave in to get the demo--and stayed up till 3:00 o'clock in the morning! I could not afford to lose the valuable information it was giving me. For those who know their story ahead of time, great! Dramatica helps you know it better. I knew my story dealt with the issues of trust and identity. I knew how these things played out. What I didn't know was that about Impact Characters and the total relationships between my themes, my characters, and the action going on. Using Dramatica forced me to answer questions that probed even deeper into my story than I had known how to go. For this alone, I would buy the software. Particularly so I can go to sleep at night and continue in the morning.
You might need this...
Read this reviews before You buy..."I have seen better!!!!", This program is ok. But FictionMaster better for pro's and WritePro is better for newcomers. I can't understand why Amazon doesn't seem to have either (try writepro.com for both.). Both have won alot of praise from both computer pros, and writting pros. And the Software is done by a real pro writer, one of the finest writing teachers around, Sol Stein. I have taken some of his workshops. He teaches the pros. "Gets me where me needs to be.", Noticing that quite a few contemporary made-for-TV movies have a distinctive and polished intricacy, suggested this was probably to do with Dramatica, that I had noticed a friend using for a novel-cum-screenplay. So I read the comprehensive manual from her installation, and concluded that this was a good way for me to go, too. Progress was slow to begin with, mostly because one needs to be patient and go through it all, ( a few times) in good order, to avoid getting mightily confused, since a great deal of the explanation is often another way to convey what is already known - sort of - from many other sources. So it needs to be taken all as a piece to make satisfactory progress. Which makes sense, because the Dramatica application is a self-contained system, with its own terminology, which responds to your accurate and considered input to a set of inter-related questions about the characters, plot, motivations, outcomes, etc. The accuracy of your answers is an important to the result, so clear thinking has to be applied. I'm far from hero status with Dramatica, but have found its use to be extremely helpful because it makes me THINK about what I am writing about. It doesn't write the piece for me, or box me in, in any way, as others have suggested it does. In conclusion, I am very satisfied with Dramatica and how it has improved my writing. It's also good to be able to discuss and share files with other users ( internationally), who are all pretty much on the same wavelength, which avoids/minimises having to navigate different terminologies and approaches.
"A very sophisticated approach to story development", Dramatica provides a tool to use the most sophisticated story model ever developed. The dramatica model is surprisingly general and adds quite a bit of force to your story without constricting creative freedom. Some structures, like a ladder, provide more freedom, not less, and Dramatica's structure is like that. If the idea of following the dramatica story model still seems formulaic to you, you are free to tweak it or change it as much as you want, or even use it's best ideas to form your own model. The point is that a sophisticated model produces a sophisticated story. The software is actually quite easy to use. The hard part is learning the model, because it is quite sophisticated. It will take a few weeks to get it, and probably a couple of tries to make it really work well for you. You can also get help from the community of dramatica users on the internet, who are supportive and friendly. If you're the kind of author to employ both a creative and analytical side to your craft, you will learn to love this tool. You'll hate how hard it makes you work, exploring every nook and cranny of your story in new ways, but you'll love the result as it pushes you into forming characters and plot rich with dramatic tension, thematic development, and thorough development of your story.
"Ahead of the curve.", Having worked with, and studied the Dramatica theory of story development, and also looked at and read a few of the examples it is based on, it seems to me that Dramatica 4 is a product somewhat ahead of itself. By this I mean, that to convey the principles of Dramatica the prior art examples are either too archetypical with no real requirement for the use of Dramatica by those who intend writing such archetypes, or are too flawed so that they do Dramatica no favours due to them being little more than the nearest point of common reference. But by treating Dramatica as a philosophy and an abstraction, and not using it to see how prior art can be aligned to its principles, one can quickly see how Dramatica will enable the writer to create stories and forms hitherto unattainable, simply because the organisation of the story's elements and form would have been too difficult to keep track of. Therefore, in order to get the desired results from using Dramatica, the user has to gain expertise in the way of defining and structuring a story's elements with Dramatica, and not be trying to defend the outcome on prior art which is a close call. This is the hard part to Dramatica, since ideal prior art probably doesn't exist, from which to refer, except for the possibility of future works skilfully created with Dramatica. Now there's a chicken or the egg paradox.
"Very useful tool.", Dramatica is a way to organise your thoughts about theme, plot-theme, and characters into a story form as opposed to something that isn't. Using its own terminology allied to templates, the user is required to fill in a set of questionnaires, which act as the input from which their story is distilled. This can be amended at will if the user feels that they are being too boxed in. The end result is more easily managed than stacks of cards and papers. It can also be easily shared with other Dramatica users by distributing files across the internet to each other (given that version sync isn't an issue). It's like having a collaborator in front of you all the time - if needed - with regard to the structure, but won't be of any help with poor prose, prose-style, bad dialogue, lack of motivation or any other essential aspects that the writer would need to know about. A badly written story, which is bang-on structurally, as far as Dramatica is concerned, is not a useful end product. In other words, the user would need to be a decent writer in the first place, using Dramatica as a tool to refine and focus their work, and not regard it an easy way out. It's not. So bearing that in mind, Dramatica shouldn't disappoint so long as the user is prepared for the discipline of story writing, in its strictest sense.
