Others say...
"FANTASTIC!" Let me say first, that when I first bought this game and installed it, played it for an hour or so, I didn't think I liked it, however, I realized that it takes time to get use to the camera angles, the combat system and the overall feel. So, I took a break and went back the next day and really gave it an effort and well, I love it! It's an awesome game...
It has a nice modding community, even comes with its own toolset so you can create your own maps, dungeons, etc.
It has a wonderful auto updater that will download all the latest patches for you among other things, like previews on new games from the ever so wonderful BioWARE corp.
Bioware puts out incredible, addictive and just super excellent games. Virtually BUG free as well. I was a huge fan of the Baldur's Gate games and played those for years. That's why it took me so long to get around to NWN. lol.
Well, Bioware, congrats, because I think you lived up to your name once again with NWN. It's not the same as their Baldur's Gate, but does have some of the same feel and game play.
The storyline is very good and you can interact with TONS of NPC's. Some people don't like it because you can only travel with up to 1 NPC and you really have no access to their inventory to give them stuff or help you carry things, but it's not that big of a deal. Sometimes it is better playing with just your character alone. Yes, sometimes, NPC companions get in the way.
The combat system takes awhile to get use too, but is nicely done. You can target one enemy and your character will attack all enemies in the area, taking out one at a time. This is nice, because you don't have to keep pointing and clicking on each enemy.
The movement has 3 different camera angles to choose from, so you will have to decide which one you like best, or just keep changing from view to view. It's quick and easy.
The character creation is awesome, and although the portraits are not that good, you can go online and download character portrait packs, even Baldur's Gate II pic packs are available. It's nice.
You can choose between various races, sub-races and classes, including sub-classes, just like BGII. You can be Human, Dwarf, Elf, Gnome, Half-Elf, Half-Orc, Halfling or even create a custom race.
The classes are awesome. Barbarian, Bard, Cleric, Druid, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Sorcerer and Wizard. Also, remember, you can have sub-classes as well. You could easily spend hours just in the character creation alone.
There are alignments, Deities and a HUGE spell table. There is so much I could say about this, but I will stop and let you decide. Yes, just buy it and lose yourself, because you will. I can't say I like NWN as much as their BGII, but it's close, dang close.
HAVE FUN!
"Good, but too limited" This game does a good, though not perfect job at implementing D&D 3rd edition rules. The main storyline of the game is interesting. The game allows for multiplayer, and also comes with a kit for modding. I quite liked the combat system in this game. One thing that I really didn't like about this game is that it's very not open ended. There's one set way to do just about everything in this game. If you play an evil or chaotic character there's little chance to actually do things the way a character of that alignment should. This game is very strongly geared towards lawful, or neutral good characters, and it makes me wonder why they even allow you to be any other alignment. There's very little room for character development, which doesn't bother me in other styles of games, but is something that an RPG like this really needs in my opinion. Also there were parts of the game that really really dragged on way too much. However I did really like both of the expansions for this game, though they too were very set in stone as far as how things are going to play out.
"Great way to hang out with friends." I have played alot of MMORPGs... and alot of single player RPGs. This however is neither and it definately has it's niche.
The best way to play this game is to have a set of friends that all like this kind of game (RPG) and can dedicate 1 night a week or so to play it. If you can throw a "lan party" using some older PCs that can handle this that is ideal... however playing over the internet is still good also.
The reason why it fits this niche very well is that it does some things better than MMORPGs.
1.) low system spec requirement 2.) low time commitment 3.) None of the outside influences 4.) No monthly fee 5.) Familiar rule set
By outside influences that is the biggest issue for many people... you see someone running around in armor off some god and you WANT IT BADLY. Then you start playing more hours so you can get that armor faster... one day you turn around to look for your friends and they aren't there. You basically end up leveling at different rates and can no longer hang out. Playing this game removes ALOT of that temptation/pitfall of MMORPGs.
There are obviously flaws to the game as well... it's dated graphics, slightly awkward interface (although not bad), and the fact that if a machine locks up and they haven't manually saved that 1 person loses hours of work (but you can download a charector editor to artifically fix them if needed)
In the grand scheme of things though there isn't a better cooperative RPG type game for multiple players that is quite this handy. Guildwars is probably close since it also has no monthly fee. I don't think Diablo II falls into these ranks as nicely.
"a good rpg" thanks amazon readers for bringing life back to this game. i had finished the first chapter and uninstalled it a few months back. i hated the limited camera angle where you could not see beyond few feet. then, i came across a review which said that you could hack the camera angle. thank you thank you, for now i have renewed interest in the game - the 3d camera works well.
the graphics are not that good (and bloatware) compared to knights of the republic which uses less memory and has much better graphics (why can't they develop nwn with kotor graphics engine beats me..)
anyway, the story is good if not great, and character development is fun (i am using a paladin/theif along with linu the cleric). gameplay is good and lasts hours and hours.
a great game for rpg fans!
"Entertaining, but has some room for improvement" NWN was a fine gaming experience. The story was good (not great; sometimes it seemed contrived), as well as the sound, graphics and playability. There were some glitches with the pathfinding functions of the game, however; I often found my character getting stuck on a small obsticle that in other Black Isle games (Baldur's Gate series and Torment, in particular), your character(s) would simply walk around it and keep going. While the over all story was decent, you had to go a long period of time between parts where the plot progressed. Having only henchman has ups and downs. I agree with all the other people who miss the banter between party members in previous games. That was very fun, and it would have been a welcome addition to NWN. There was a bonus to this "deficiency," however. Being able to carry only one henchman with you makes the replay value much better. The game's dynamics change drastically. For example, I played through and finished as a paladin. Since most of the oponents are undead, the battles were relatively easy. I took the rogue henchman through and he was able to handle most of the locks and traps. Another time I played through about half way as a rogue and took the cleric henchman with me. It was way harder (but very fun). I couldn't just lung into battles. I'd have to sneak around them, lure a few away from the crowd and finish them off before attacking the others.

What our customer's say!
"Solid game, but the Official Campaign sucks", This is a really fun game, but don't worry about playing the Official Campaign. It's not very good. However the user content is amazing. Some of the best modules are Shadowlords and Dreamcatcher (http://adamandjamie.com/nwn/).
"One of my favorites...", This is one of my favorite games, right up there with Starcraft Broodwar and Counterstrike 1.6. This and those two games are about the only video games I ever play anymore, and with good reason. They are awesome games. The campaigns are fantastic, but what is possibly my favorite is the online play with other people. This is a must-have for any D&D player or RPG lover.
"Great Game", For this price, I don't see any reason for anyone who enjoys RPGs not to buy this.
The graphics are nothing spectacular now, but the storyline is absolutely amazing. The four chapters of the single player campaign will keep you -very- entertained for a long time.
The game play is easy enough (especially as a Ranger or Druid), the alignment consequences add to the 'roleplaying' aspect and there's really a lot of content there if you're into it. If you have the time and $10, get the game.
"I you have alot of time on your hands this is a good time passer", Ok, it can have it's glitches now and then, but overall its a good way to spend your pocket change. When starting, a mage or other spellcaster is the worst pick, they range, sure but it takes awhile even in quickselect ; a ranger is far better. My advice is to make a rouge or secondary rouge to pick those locked chests and disarm the traps. This can really anger you if your killed by a trapped chest thats vital to open.plus(theories not confirmed)in the second chapter there is a door that leads somewhere that cannot be bashed with a 100+ lock on it.Another thing is the henchmen are always running off to kill a enemy while your still opening the chests in the first room. The game itself is fun but the dungeons are difficult, even on easy mode a few moderate level monsters are lethal. I advise buying this game with an expansion pack like shadows of the undertide or ect. Despite those drawbacks overall this is a game to be on your shelf, its over 100 hours of good gaming and sure to be worth the cost
"A Good, Fun RPG", The Neverwinter Nights game series is one of my all time favorite, if not favorite, games. It's strength lies in it's diversity. This is not just one single player game nor is it just one multiplayer game. It can be about anything you want it to be. The game comes with one story to play through with many side quests. The game is massive, which is good and bad. Sometimes things seem to drag on, but then they pick up again. Overall it is a good story that will take up a lot of your time and keep you entertained.
Once you have completed the main campaign, unlike in most games, things are not over. You still have many choices. Since you get to create your own character and shape it how you want, you can always play through again with a character completely different than the one you just played. One negative to the story the game comes with though is that regardless of your character the story does not change much if at all, only how your character handles things. If you tire of that story you can download countless others that have been created by other creative players or Bioware. These vary in style and quality but there are many good campaigns out there to entertain you, all for free. Though Bioware does have some that you can pay to download, all player created content is free.
Think you have a good idea for a campaign? Think you can do better than Bioware or others? Then go for it! Neverwinter Nights comes with a toolset that has everything you need to create your own stories and worlds.
Tired of playing single player games by yourself? Then just connect to the internet and look through the many campaigns or persistent worlds that other players have created and are playing 24/7, all for free. Chances are you will find some place that feels right to you. Or create your own and have others enter your world and be at your mercy.
Neverwinter Nights is over 4 years old now. This should not put anyone off from buying this game. In fact it is a big plus. It means it is cheaper now than it was when it was new. There is still a good community with plenty of content to find to download. Most if not all the bugs you might have read about have been worked out by now, and work arounds have been made for things that were found limiting originally. Bioware has not left the game alone either as an update was just recently released and they have released new campaigns to download. Being older the graphics may not be top notch for today's standards, but they are still very pleasing with beautiful scenery whether you are walking through a zombie infested city or taking a nice stroll through an autumn woodland.
For what you get with Neverwinter Nights it is well worth the price. If you want to get the most out of the game though you really need to buy all the expansions. Buy Neverwinter Nights alone if you want to just take a test drive but if you want to really get the most out of the game spend the few extra dollars and get the bundled packages that include all the games and be sure to check out the Bioware forums.

Read this reviews before You buy..."No internet connection needed", This game has been one of my favorite games since its release. Please do not be detered by the "internet required" review as I have played this game with and without an internet connection with no problems at all.... unless you want to play the player made mods, and play online with other people... it is NOT necessary to be connected to the net if you only want to play through the single player campaigns... which, by the way combined with all the expansions is easily over 100 hours of game play. To this day this game is one of my favorites, that I still play regularly, and I eagerly await Neverwinter Nights 2. "worth it, if you like these games", From my point of view, the game is entertaining, but I don't think it's for everyone. It's a hardcore RPG that may seem a bit overwhelming when getting started. I suggest reading the manual if you're not a D&D player, although it's long and monotonous and gets confusing at times; it helped me a lot. The first half hour in the game you get a series of mini tutorials which are extremely boring, but as soon as you are out of the training fascilities, the game speeds up. It is complex in the sense that there are many different options that will customize your character and affect your game greatly. This includes everything from what constitution you have, to what class you fight as, to your gender. NWN consists of four chapters, each with their own main quests, and then a multitude of (generally easier) side quests that will help boost your level and make the game easier to play. To help you along the way, you can hire a single henchman and/or summon a companion. These quests can be quite vast and many of them are less fighting and more barganing, speaking and arguing with other NPC's, so if you're a person who enjoys straigh-out battles, one after another, this game will probably be too tedious for you. I've had few minor techincal difficulties playing the game, however. The most time-consuming of these was that in the second chapter I was unable to speak with some people in Kendrack's Mercenary Barracks whenever I would leave and reenter, so I was forced to save the game every time before entering said place and reload the game. Otherwise, I was generally okay. The graphics are also a bit lagging and not up to the standards of some more advanced games- slightly angular and fuzzy with little detail, but when you're playing the game you hardly notice ; I was more preoccupied with trying to *vanquish my foes* and figure out how to complete my quests. Overall, the game definately is not for everyone, but if you don't mind it being a bit tedious, as I mentioned before, then I highly recommend it.
"Not very entertaining.", NEVERWINTER NIGHTS is a very derivative, stale game that does not live up to the standards and expectations of Bioware Studios. It has an equal amount of pros and cons, which I will address and compare.
The Pros: -Neverwinter contains a large amount of quests and items to use, and introduces several interesting customization options. -Neverwinter also, rather boldly, strays from the easier to use 2nd edition Dungeons and Dragons, and becomes possibly the first ever 3rd edition RPG to hit the market. -Neverwinter also attempts to cover a lot of ground with its skills and feats. The leveling up of characters is translated into a simplified, much more rapid system. -Neverwinter introduces the most easy to use editor in a game so far.
The Cons: -Neverwinter does not contain nearly enough skills or feats. Far too many have been grievously oversimplified. -The story, especially after Baldur's Gate, is a little too lukewarm. -NPC's* are now much less competent in your party. Since you can only have one, and you can't control them or access their inventories, my NPC felt all too static. Plus, I cannot tell you how indescribably annoying it is when you die ten thousand times, when the fight would be over in two seconds if they would just cast the right spell. Also, they don't know when a battle is coming, so they can only use their magical power-ups** in the middle of combat. It's usually too late. -The game's editor is still too difficult to use well. There has to be a better system for using scripts***. -The game is far too short. It did not take very long too finish the game. And I play on the harder difficulties.
Overall, the game is disappointing. It attempts to block out the all-important NPC element, and over-stresses cosmetic and pointless changes in your character and NPCs. I do not recommend this to a fan of the genre. Stick with the classics, or pick up KOTOR**** instead.
*Non Player Character: A character that you do not create, usually not a protagonist. **A spell that helps your party by temporarily making you stronger or more able. *** Bits of code that direct characters and events. For instance, a script tells the game to make an NPC attack you if you attack him, or makes the gargoyle come alive when you pick up the statuette. ****Knights of the Old Republic. Critically acclaimed Role-Playing game made by the same company.
P.S. Do not check the box saying that the review was unhelpful unless it actually is. Please, do not mark it just because you disagree.
"Typical RPG problems, disappointing toolset.", While the game itself is fairly entertaining, it still has those typical design flaws programmers just can't seem to see. Inspite of being told to stay put, characters with you magicly show up next to you as you pass through some doorways, often right into a scene best handled alone. More often, very imaginative strategies will gather fewer experience than rushing blindly into battle. "Scripted events" (where your character is magicly thrown into a new situation or plot line which he or she has the power to control, but can not) can make thinking gamers feel cheated. The much hyped toolset is a disaster for imaginative Dungeon Masters as the vast majority of "monsters" are of the humanoid type. If as game creator, you don't mind using the same basic type of creaures over and over, the toolset will work for you. Anyone very creative however, will see that most of those fantastic creations from the Monster Manuals can not be included in their game. Professional graphic artists may (in a conciderable amount of time) be able to create unique creatures. Anyone else however, is out of luck. Even if one would be satisfied using the provided monsters, they will be bombarded with the program language "scripting" needed to make events happen within their world. NWN had the potential to be great, but falls victim to typical computer RPG problems and unproductive tools for one's own imagination.
"Surprisingly mediocre single-player campaign", This review is based solely on my experience with the single-player campaign of Neverwinter Nights. Thus, I can't comment on the on-line capacity of the game. I bought this game thinking that it was the successor of Bioware's excellent Baldur's Gate series, which are among my all-time favorite video games. In a few ways it does improve upon these earlier masterpieces, but in many more ways it proved to be an inferior gaming experience. Unless you have the time and patience to explore this game's on-line side, don't bother getting it. There are many better computer roleplaying games out there (e.g., Morrowind, Baldur's Gate, Diablo 2, etc.).
Gameplay: This is a D&D-style fantasy adventure that Bioware has made a reputation for presenting well. You create a character at the beginning and build him/her up with experience points during a 70-80 hour main quest. The basic idea is similar to other such games, but the implementation here is unexciting. First, this is a single-character game in which you don't have a party. You can hire a mercenary, but for the most part you are on your own. It makes for a rather uninteresting experience, since your hired hand does not have much of a personality and specializes primarily in poor pathfinding and suicidal behavior while in combat. Unlike great games by Bioware such as Baldur's Gate and Knights of the Old Republic, you virtually have no control over your mercenary, who is often a liability.
Another problem with the game is its structure. It is largely comprised of dungeon crawl after dungeon crawl after dungeon crawl. A few of the dungeons are well done and memorable, and the game does pack in an awful lot of monsters. But the experience is rather claustrophobic insofar as your adventures are boxed into four chapters in which you simply explore a town, its countryside, and underground areas. Unlike Baldur's Gate, you can't revisit towns that were in previous chapters, and there is really no reason to since they are rather generic in feel.
The story itself is not a bad one, but is full of cliches and rather predictable. You can take the noble good-guy route or be an outright villain, but the main story will unfold in the same way. The main deficiency with the single-player campaign is the almost utter lack of connection that you feel with your character and the other NPCs you'll encounter. There is none of the banter, bickering, and cameraderie that made the characters so memorable in Baldur's Gate. Here, your mercenary has no stories to tell and even main characters like Aribeth and Aarin Gend are just there to push the story alone.
Perhaps even more distressing is how unstable this game was on my computer. I had the 1.23 patch and it crashed to desktop about every 30 minutes. The current patch (1.65) is available at Bioware's website, but it's 66MB! If you have a dial-up internet connection like me, you know what that means (hours of waiting to download). It's really a shame that Bioware has fallen into the pattern of other developers and has begun releasing games that still have technical issues (I had similar crash problems with Knights of the Old Republic, but the Baldur's Gate games were models of stability). I hope that they avoid this with Neverwinter Nights 2.
Graphics: The game looks good, but not great. Graphics are largely an evolutionary improvement over Baldur's Gate. There are a few interesting changes, such as more combat moves, spell effects, and so forth. You can zoom the camera in close to the action, but things get blocky looking. Those who do use the Aurora toolset that comes with the game should have a lot to choose from, though this game is not the best looking RPG available.
Sounds: The music was good and set the atmosphere. Voice acting was hit-and-miss, with the whiny main character, Aribeth, being the worst offender. Overall, the sounds in the game served their purpose, but didn't rescue the otherwise mediocre plot or excuse the lack of real character development.
Replay/value: Since I don't play games on-line or have an interest in downloading mods by others, Neverwinter Nights had a short shelf-life for me. Due to the ho-hum story, bland characters, and crashing, I won't be rushing out to buy Neverwinter Nights 2. If you like dungeon crawling for dungeon crawling's sake and haven't played some truly extraordinary games like Morrowind or Baldur's Gate, then this game might be worth a try (be sure to get the latest patch). Otherwise, skip this one, since it doesn't begin to measure up to the high standards previously set by Bioware.
