"axis and allies: europe", I have always been interested in WWII and strategic board games. Axis and Allies Europe fulfills expectations once you take the time to learn the game. This game exercises your intelligence by examining your ability to strategize, think ahead, and know the person you are playing. It is basically Risk on steroids.

"Axis and Allies Europe Game", My grandson wanted this game for his birthday and I was lucky to find it on Amazon. My grandson totally loves this game, not to mention that the pieces are very tiny.

"Where are the pieces ?", This game for me is un-playable. Unlike the original, this game does not come with the necessary amount of pieces to even set the game up. Germany, for example, does not even have enough soldiers to put one in each of it's territories, thus they cannot start the game. How can you play this ? Sure, you can use the substitute chips, but then how do you know later on if they are supposed to be soldiers, troops, tanks, or airplanes? It would be indistinguishable. I was extremely upset when I opened this and tried to play my first game. Don't waste your money on this, buy the original Axis & Allies instead.

"great game, better than the original", I don't understand why some people think the original A+A was a better game. This game is much more balanced. The rule that gives you 12 IPC to allocate units whereever you want in the beginning assures variety.

I play this game with other players that played the original since the 80's... This game is so much better. I think Germany might have a slight advantage in this game, but not much. The allies need to plan and cooperate a lot better in this game (as opposed to the original where it's impossible for the Axis to win with experienced players).

Removing the technology rolls for this game was a great idea. It was so annoying in the original game when someone was losing and then started spending all their money trying to roll heavy bombers (in desparation).

In summary, all our games have been pretty close. Germany begins with an awesome force, but has a lot of British ships to sink and needs to get ground in the USSR. Russia is under pressure from the Germans. Britian and the USA need to sink the German subs and stop Germany from overrunning Russia, Africa, and the middle East. Great game.

Also, in this game, battleships are actually worth building, unlike the original game. It takes 2 hits on the same turn to sink a battleship, which makes them very powerful and worth their cost. Subs are much more powerful in this game too, since they are no longer sitting ducks for planes (Planes need a destroyer escort to attack subs).

This game is light years better than the orginal A+A game, although I'd recommend that a newbie start with the original game.



"Better than A&A Pacific - As good as the Revised Original", Axis and Allies: Europe is an excellent game. To understand the scenario, envision the base game with a zoom focusing your attention to the European theater only (with Japan-controlled Asia cut out). The strategy component is basically this: can Germany conquer Russia fast enough (without the aid of Japan - a strategy commonly used in the original version of the game) before the economic superiority of the Allies overwhelms the German military. Unlike, Axis and Allies: Pacific, there is no option for a technical "victory win", or any of that nonsense. The only way to win in A&A Europe is to take over an enemy capital and hold it. This sets the stage for a bloody, action packed game.

As a side note, keep in mind that there are several rule changes unique to A&A: Europe

1 - aircraft can only attack a sub when destroyers are present (like in Pacific)
2 - tanks attack on a 3, but defend on 2 (unlike the 3/3 rule in the revised original)
3 - allied troops in Russian territories can be converted into Russian troops
4 - destroyers naval assault on a 2 (like in Pacific, but unlike the revised original where it is a 3)
5 - Axis and Allies both receive a 12 IPC extra before game begins and can purchase and place units in any friendly territory or sea zone
6 - no new factories can be built (this is a huge difference from the other games)
7 - middle east territories if taken cause the allies to pay the axis the lost IPC value each turn
8 - convoy routes can be taken in sea zones (same rules as in Pacific)

So far I have enjoyed this version more than A&A Pacific and would highly recommend this game, as it is quite enjoyable to play.

(*Side Note) - my game came with missing infantry pieces (I had half of the amount of pieces that are supposed to come with the game) and have found that this is not unusual when I contacted Avalon Hill. I sent an e-mail to their customer service department and received the replacement pieces within a week. In all, I was very pleased with the customer service I received.

"A teenager who enjoys strategy games", I bought Axis and Allies Europe with some Christmas money to see if it improved over the original. It does improve in several ways, such as country specific units, a very nice map, and several new units, but the overall strategy is very diminished. Germany has almost no shot at winning unless you are very lucky with your dice rolls. Their only real chance is either to make a huge navy and attack England, or a huge army and attack Russia. Also, since it is only the European theater being fought over, the United States can use all of its production to attack Germany, which is not realistic because they also had to fight Japan. If you do buy Axis and Allies Europe, I would recommend also getting the Pacific version and playing both games at the same time. (or you could just get the original.) :)

"Great family fun", Great game. Three generations of my family all played it along with the Pacific version for a world war. We appreciate the extra detail over the original A&A. I understand my grandsons have had it set up since last Christmas {10 & 12}

"Great game, if only it was properly balanced", This game is great historically, graphically, and in complexity.
It is more detailed than the original. The striking flaw to the game is the balance, which removes much of the clever strategy employed in the original. The only realistic strategy for germany is to bull rush Russia early. If Germany cannot be stopped, the game is over quick. If it doesnt succeed early there is no hope once the other allies can bring their forces to bear on western europe. I suggest buying the original, Ive played over a hundred games and there are always ways to tweak your strategy, unlike having only one available here.

"Excellent", You don't get better than this game.

I have played A&A for about 20 years, with my father originally getting me into it.

From my experience the best thing to do is to keep the initial rules affiliated to piece movement, power and cost but scrape the A&A rules for two sides. This works best if you have five players and then you can just blow the **** out of each over.
Further, you can make pacts with fellow players to be allies, perhaps
defaulting on this as soon as they have your trust and let there guard down.

Truely brilliant. Expect to wait up to an hour for your turn and have plenty of time on your hands - you will not be going anywhere for at least a day
