Others say..."Awesome!"My favorite 1st person action/adventure game. Addictive! Very cool! Great on my surround sound speakers! A whole different world. I really like that the other characters have little side conversations. It adds to the realism. I also appreciate the amount of detail that went into creating this game. EX: If you kill someone or render them unconscious you must hide the body so that nobody will discover your presence. The tutorial/training level at the begining was very well done and basicly rendered the instructions useless which is a big plus to me. I guess I should get the newest version now. "Thief redefined first-person gaming."There's no doubt about it; Thief: The Dark Project singlehandedly redefined first-person gaming. Joe Kucan (better known as Kane of Command & Conquer's Nod faction) mentioned this as one of his favorites, and the game is referenced in many articles in Gamasutra, Gamespot, Gamespy, and other gaming web sites. Other first-person games such as No One Lives Forever (Monolith) and Wolfenstein 3D (id) have attempted to incorporate "stealth tactics," but without the same success. Thief introduced gamers to the world of stealth, to the notion that high-powered weaponry was not sufficient for accomplishing a game's mission. This Gold edition takes the original and adds three missions - a worthy addition to any true gamer's library. "A unique game that's a whole lot of fun."Thief is my current favorite game and it's a great deal of fun. It's unique from anything else I'm familiar with. It combines the action of a first-person venue with puzzle-solving gameplay more typically found in an adventure. Thief is not really a first-person shooter. Although you could probably go around killing all the guards, it's much more challenging to accomplish your missions without killing anyone. In fact, the higher difficulty levels usually require this. Figuring out how to do that, without getting caught, is lots of fun. Executing your plan often requires a deft touch at the controls, and this is also fun. The game is very engrossing. You may find your heart racing as you worry about getting caught where you don't belong, and you'll need to remind yourself that it's just a game.
"An excellent, unique game with just a few flaws" I would rate this game a 3 and a half, but I will give it the benefit of the doubt, and give it a four. Overall though, I think that this is an excellent game, and I am very happy with it. I have high standards for games and I only like about half of what I play, and I would say that this game definitely satisfies those high standards. I love what Eidos has done with the role-playing game and first-person shooter. The idea of making a "first-person sneaker" is a reality. This game hits it right on the mark. Your character is weak in head-to-head combat. It is hard to beat just one guard with your sword, and if he summons his friends with a cry for help, then you are dead in the water. In "Thief", you must rely upon your wits, stealth, dexterity, and cunning to sneak past or ambush whatever beings stand between you and your loot-to-be. On the "pro" side, this game has a remarkably easy-to-use interface, considering the complexity of the actions that are needed. The user interface, in my humble opinion, kills about half of the action games out there, because you always get killed in combat while you try to figure out which keys to push to defend yourself. This game is not like that at all. You can get used to the keys by the end of the first mission. It has wonderful graphics, animation, sound, and music. These stunning combinations wrap you up in the game so that you feel like you are walking around in those dark tunnels and dungeons. When you are sneaking up on a guard, about to club him in the head, you feel an adrenaline rush as you pray that the guard will not hear your quiet footsteps. Like some other recent first person role playing games, "Thief" has been so richly designed that every square inch of each 3D environment has detail. The guard characters in the game are very amusing sometimes and the conversations that you overhear will occasionally make you chuckle. Last, but not least, the AI in this game is excellent. Guards overhear struggles and help out their comrades in arms. Guards who find blood on the ground will become suspicious and start looking for you. How long the guards spend looking for you depends upon how obvious you have made it that you are in the neighborhood. However, the game is far from perfect. The biggest downer for me has been the game's lack of variety and flexibility. The variety of weapons, tools and other goodies available is low, which makes your character one-dimensional. In addition, you carry over none of your loot or weapons from mission to mission, so your character does not develop like you see in the usual role-playing game. Because of this, there is a tinge of repetitiveness in each mission. Interaction with non-player characters is virtually nil, and thus, you don't become immersed in the story line. Another aspect of this game that I didn't like was the existence of the usual role-playing cliches like the existence of monsters and the undead. I think that the closest game to "Thief" out there is "Deus Ex". I liked Deus Ex a lot better than "Thief". Deus Ex does a better job if involving your character in the storyline, and it has a much greater variety of skills, tools and weapons that you can use. In addition, it has the all-important character development aspect that "Thief" lacks. However, if you love "Deus Ex", you will still enjoy "Thief", and it is worth buying.

What our customer's say!"no need to hyperventilate", when i bought my windows gamebox about a year ago, one of the first things i got was "thief bundle", which i gave a five star rating. however, one of my gripes was that the gold version did not come with it, and i wanted to get this after reading websites. finally, i got it through amazon, new and at a very cheap price! there are 3 extra levels in this game. in thief 1, you need four stones to get into a cathedral; you find these in two levels, two stones per level. in the gold version, each stone is found in its own level. the first gold level, thieves guild, is long and has little to do with the story. its a good level anyway, with the creepiness thief 1 is known for. however, the mage towers is a repetitive and somewhat tedious level, while song of the caverns is the exploration of an opera house that is also rather tedious. basically, its like citibank, but not as good. so...i realize that most thief fans will want the gold to have the complete set, but, in itself, the gold is not really worth hyperventilating over. however, it still is thief 1, which, old, gold, or whatever, is still the scariest and one of the best games ever made for computer.

"Deserves 5 Stars and More. Best PC Game I'Ve Tried.", If you're into role-playing action games such as Tomb Raider or Silent Hill, this game is right up your alley. This first-shooter game had me helplessly immersed in the game, obsessed with finding all the loot and goodies. Gameplay is smooth, storyline actually has a plot, weapons are loads of fun to experiment with the different AI, the zombies/ghouls/machines you encounter are tough to vanquish, Garret's lines are laced with cynical humour, and the fear-factor level will have your heart pounding. The whole idea is to sneak around as much as possible without killing the human guards while collecting loot that will help you as you progress up the levels, and you're responsible for picking your own tools and weapons for the next heist. My head was spinning in some of the levels as maps are unavailable or vague, but this only made my anticipation climb several notches while exploring the levels. I never thought footfalls and noises could feel so delicously scary. Plus the sneaking around is so much more challenging than having to kill everything in sight. Playerbility of the game is worth every penny - there were some levels that took me over 2 hours to complete. Highly, highly recommended. Note: The original Thief is more seamless with its storyline compared with Thief Gold as Thief Gold added levels which create a rather choppy story. But I found that the added levels prolong gameplay and provides additional challenge and fun to the overall game.
"Grab this game!!!", I've been an avid PC game player since 1993 and own hundreds of titles, and I can honestly say that Thief and Thief 2 are the pinnacle of PC gaming. This is without doubt the most immersive and scary game-playing I've ever done. Yet everything is presented tastefully understated. Nothing is in your face. I frequently actually had to stop playing because I was getting too involved and nervous--but I always went back. I did several marathon sessions on these games, some lasting over 10 hours at a time, non-stop. They have massive replay value, as each time you play, you will have different adventures. I particularly remember all the times I ended up blowing my cover, and not having recently saved my game, I didn't want to start from my last save, so I ended up running for my life from guards who gathered up more guards as they chased me. One time I had a good ten minute chase just because I didn't want to give up the progress I had made. I was chased down hallways of a mansion, finally finding an open window, I climbed out onto the porch roof, lost several health points as I jumped to the ground. I lost those guys but then the guards in the front yard saw me and took over. I took several blows and arrows as I did an end run around them and headed out the front gate. They were hot on my trail. I ran down several city streets, totally disoriented, finally gaining some distance by hiding around a corner in a doorway. I took out 2 of them as they passed by with my arrows. Then I ran again. The others saw me and chased me, but they were a hundred yards behind me now. I came to an arching bridge, which I began to cross. Suddenly I realized where I was and knew I was trapped. I jumped over the railing and into the water of a canal. I went underwater and heard arrows splashing into the water above me. I swam underwater upstream until I was almost dead from lack of air, then I surfaced. They were all on the bridge looking the other way in the direction I had jumped. I made my way quietly to some steps and climbed out of the canal. I was down to 15 health points. I went back to the mansion and found the lower level almost deserted because they were all down at the canal. I went in and continued my mission, this time remembering to save my game. It's this kind of thing (which happens a lot!) which will induce sweat and cause you to feel exhausted after you've played. This is more of an experience than a game. Don't miss this!
"The Best Game Ever", I have bought this game last year. That was my biggest mistake. I spend the next two weeks locked up in my hotel room not beeing able to let go of this game. To say that it is addictive is like saying nothing at all. You don't play the game, you become the master thief Garret. You get transformed into his world....you see what he sees, you hear what he hears, you think like he thinks. This is an absolute gem in the gaming world. Once you experience the Thief games-you will not be able to enjoy anything else. A must have, period.

Read this reviews before You buy..."A classic among computer games...", I'm rather finicky when it comes to giving my seal of approval to computer games, but this one does definitely earn it. I quickly grew tired of the mindless shoot-em-up-with-the-biggest-gun-you-can-find quakers (a new one of which comes out about twice a week now). Thus I was pleasantly surprised when I played this particular game. Although it IS possible to kill all the villains on most of the levels, it takes a whole lot of patience, diligence, and skill to do so. These are qualities few computer games encourage anymore. And on some of the later levels, where it is physically impossible to clear the level at all, you must discard your warrior instincts and simply run like the wind! Hence, this game also advocates innovative and unusual solutions to posed problems. Furthermore, it will train you to approach things carefully and thoughtfully...for example, it is better to peer into a room and study it for traps or listen for guards than simply barge right in. If I were to summarize all my previous blatherings, I would say this game receives my approval because it is much more of an intellectual game than many similar ones on the market. I'm sure that years to come from now, when virtual reality games are the standard, I'll still pull out my old copy of Thief and show my kids what the true classics were like.
"Thief Gold", Thief Gold is the gold edition of Thief Dark Project, It has three new mission plus the orginal 12 levels. Thief Gold has three new levels, But they are not in the end of the game, They are very well inserted into the storyline. In the orginal game you are requierd to steal four tailsmens, Water and Fire tailsmens were in mission "The Lost City", Air and Earth tailsmens in mission "Undercover".But in Thief Gold they all have their own missions, The Earth tailsmen is in the mission "Mages Keep", The Water tailsmen is in the mission "Songs of Cravens". Besides this there is another new mission "Thieves Guild". The level desinging for all the three missions are superb and they are very large and it will take you long to complete. Besides this there are many charecters and sound too. You will love the singing charecter in "Songs of Cravens". The orginal mission's are also reworked to give great replay, "Lost City" and "Bonehoard" for example looks different and there are new villans in them. Thief Gold looks a lot better that the orginal,The AI,Graphics,Sound are very good. There is also a fourth mission a secret fun mission in the end which shows the bugs that went into prodction, Like how the water effect turned out when they initially and the orginal design for certain creatures, Even that mission is fun to play. Thief Gold is a must buy for FPS fans even for persons who have the Thief Dark project as the three new missions are fantastic.
"Superb Game from a Sadly Departed Company", Thief: the Dark Project (Thief Gold has a few extra levels but is essentially the same) is perhaps one of the finest PC games I've ever played. You assume the role of a thief in this single-player, first-person strategy game. It's not a shooter; in fact, if you shoot anything, you're more likely to get yourself killed. As a thief, you're pretty weak and fragile. A couple of sword hits by a wounded and angry guard will easily kill one. So, the best way to approach this game is with stealth and strategy. Stick to shadows, creep along slowly and quietly, and you'll do well. And along the way, you'll discover that the mood and tense pacing of this superb game has completely absorbed you. Looking Glass, the company that produced the equally-superb Ultima Underworld/System Shock games, has a real winner in this game. It is sad that the company has closed shop due to finances, but it leaves a legacy of some of the finest computer games ever created. You owe it to yourself to try Thief (it's a cheap purchase nowadays and worth its weight in gold). The atmosphere of the game and the stunning ambient sounds really draw you into this world. Try it out and you won't be disappointed!
"Original and extremely fun.", This is the kind of game that sets a new standard for innovation in gameplay. Thief has a great plot, and very original gameplay. You have to think like a thief in this game to have any chance of surviving. Your supply of weapons is definitely NOT for head on confrontations. There is something very satisfying about sneaking up on someone and simply knocking them over the head with your blackjack. Who would think that not splattering someone all over a wall(like every other FPS out there)would be so fun? But it is. The only real flaws of this game is the AI and some of the enemies that you have to face. First, the AI is fine most of the time, but can be very quirky at times, such as not noticing you when you are making enough noise to annoy a jackhammer operator or noticing you when you are silent and still in complete darkness. The other flaw is that in a few levels you have to deal with creatures that can see you in the dark and also can't be knocked out. This is annoying because the greatness of this game comes from sneaking around. This seems to be a common complaint and has been addressed in the sequel. Despite these flaws, this is one of the best overall games for the PC on the market today.
"Innovative and Fun", Thief Gold is beyond a doubt the most creative and innovative game I have ever played. Looking Glass Studios has done a splendid job of tying the storyline together with the actual game. Garrett's interaction with the game environment (i.e. use of shadows for stealth), the superb level design, and responsive controls make Thief Gold a true masterpiece.
