Others say..."Is Q2 really a sequell?"QUAKE 2 ROCKS!!!!! It really has nothing to do with Quake 1, so I don't know how it's a sequal. The whole objective thing is a lot more fun than "kill anything that moves". If you are really squemish when you see guts fly, you still could probably get this, as the gibs don't compare to Quake 3 Arena I will now assault your mind... !!!EMAG SIHT YUB TI EVOL LLIW UOY !!YUB YUB YUB!! "a new classic for me"I'm one of these guys that has a penchant for getting into old classic games way way after they have been released and longer after they have been considered current. I got Jedi Knight for the first time in 2000 and was addicted to that for months, and recently a friend of mine gave me a copy of Quake 2, which is one of the best shooters I have had the opportunity to play It's definately following the classic DOOM formula, and no matter what "storyline" they attach to it or other DOOM clones the point is the same, you are a nameless soldier deserted in enemy territory with a single blaster, turning slowly into a one-man army and getting a huge arsenel in no time at all. The graphics, for a game made in 1998, are phenomenal, much better than Jedi Knight which came out around the same time. The weapons are all a blast to use, and the gameplay is very challenging but rewarding. Not to mention the enormous triumphant death kick of of those giant guys who swing hammer-arms at you is absolutely hilarious! Can't wait to play this online, but it's worth a buy or a burn. Great game! "Great, but impossible to fix technical problem"The game is exellent! BUT After I upgraded to the worst operating system... Windows XP... The game did not work very properly anymore. Activision's technical support is pure s-. I contacted the fourms at Planetquake and I still did not got a reply from them... If you have Windows XP... YOUR OUT OF LUCK. The error you will get if you have XP is... ERROR:GAMEERROR:Function pointers have moved. That occurs when I try to load the game... So do yourself a favor and buy a old machine with Win 95, NT, or 2000 to run this game properly. "Shake or Quake "I am not to impressed with this game bacause 1 it gets boring after the 3rd time you've completed it. I have the PC version of Q2 and you get an extra 3 parts than the PS1. The first is a bones level where you get the super shotgun but it takes ages to get there. the 2nd is you end up in the an enemy warehouse. The 3rd is you go to an enemy mine. If you will have just started you have to use your blaster and find your shotgun a bit later on in the leavle. The secrets are a bit poor for you only get a health packs ammo power ups or a gun. I am not to keen on this game for it gets boring and you efortesly kill enimies with no heart in it at all. "Thats what I call a good FPS"Quake 2 was one of my first PC games and I loved it, even after all these years I still play it...A little.. The games plot is alright in some specks...I really didn't care for the story to be honest with you but The graphics on this game were great for the year it came out. The game play was just OFF THE HOOK. The game plays like doom but BETTER. The enemy A.I was good too....Not the best but good. The Best part of the game is of course...THE GUNS!!!!!! The Guns just plain Kick a$$... Also the game is fairl long...I enjoyed it..The game is pretty old..Probably 5 years old now. I doubt you can find this game but if you can GET IT! This game is not the best game ever made but it will be a solid fun filled game with top notch violence...yea the games pretty violent. I haven't seen many FPS like Doom Or Quake 2...There great games IF YOU CAN FIND IT GO OUT AND BUY THIS AWESOME GAME!! Gameplay 5/5 Graphics 4/5..for its time Length 4/5.. Over all.....4.5 out of 5 Later

"a quake-ing good time", With all due respect to the PC version, I believe the Playstation One version of Quake II is the ultimate version. Yes, the Playstation version has loading times, but they're not THAT big of a deal. They're extremely short and hardly an inconvenience. Also, the rooms were more colorful and it was easier to see what was in front of you in the Playstation version.
The PC version misses out on those things, but it does make up for that by having better animations from enemies and bosses. But the controls aren't as good as the Playstation controller either (sorry, I need a controller for a video game console because that's what I've grown up with). The PC version also has some more rooms to explore, so that's nice as well.
Overall, either version is a good purchase, but I personally like the Playstation version more.
"Amazing Value", I have been a Duke Nukem loyalist for years. Quake II gives Duke a run for his money. My 4 yr. old plays this game up to the third level. Sometimes I forget some of those parts and he tutors me on how to get around. This game consumes my interest. Now it is available for under $1? I'm not ready to upgrade anytime soom to Wii or others....
"Best online multiplayer game ever", Yes this game is old..1998 I believe. However this PC classic still holds its on with the games of today..better some say. Quake 2 was the next step in the Doom/1st Person evolution and brought online multiplayer to the masses. The grahics are still superb even today. The weapons offer a perfect selection, achieve almost perfect parity with one another, and as fellow Quakers can atest are incredibly fun to use. As I heard another reviewer mention, Quake 2 can definitely steal your day or weekend before you know it. For the younger folks out there - I urge you not to turn your nose up at this one - get this game and you will be pleasantly surprised. I can promise that.
"Oldie but still kickin ass", Alsome game and still holds up to todays FPS, Halo and HALO 2 are just stupid games and really are easy to beat even on legenay, now quake 2 nine years old and still very alsome, and I play it on a windows xp and no problems at all.
"Quake 2", The transaction was quick, shipped in two days and the product works great. My kids and I are having a blast with it.
You might need this...
Read this reviews before You buy..."QUAKE 2", This is great and I prefer this to Quake 3. This has great music that goes with the action. The story mode will keep you going for adges. "Still QUAKEing after all these years", Although it's been out and about for nearly five years now, I've yet to encounter a 3D first-person shooter game that's quite as fun to play as Quake II. Whenever I get the urge to cut down hordes of fugly cybernetic aliens, I throw some mood music into my CD-ROM player (my personal recs: MegaDeth's "Countdown to Extinction" album, ICP's "Riddle Box", and just about anything by White Zombie / Rob Zombie), select my settings, and fire this bad-boy up! Pretty soon I'm cuttin` the bad guys down left `n' right with every bit of ordnance I can muster! Sure I take a few hits here `n' there, and even get killed at least twice on each level when playin' the "medium" difficulty setting. But thanks to my using the "Save Game" option every twenty paces, I can get the massacre goin' again and hardly miss a beat! And with the help of the drop-down status display (press F1 to raise and lower this feature), I'm kept up to speed on how many enemies I've killed on a particular level as well as the number remaining, how many of the goals I've accomplished for that level, and the number of swag-filled secret areas I've uncovered. Fair warning, though: be sure the coast is clear before you use this feature, as enemies will take advantage of your "downtime" by tryin' to kill ya dead! Speakin' of secret areas, levels, and such: while I stumbled upon quite a few hidden things by accident the first time `round thanks to an occasional stray shot, I decided to cheat a bit to find the ones I'd missed before by checking out a few resources on the internet, including www.gamewinners.com/DOSWIN/blquake2.htm. This particular site also lets ya in on such cheat codes as unlimited ammo, invincibility, and enhanced armor. Er, not that I need to use such codes to totally kick @$$, of course... But despite the carnage o' fun I've had playin' Quake II iover the last few years, there are a few downsides that bum me out a little. While I'm not too hip on not being able to hold onto more than two of each kind of power-up item (e.g. Quad Damage, Invincibility, Environmental Suit) on the "medium" difficulty setting, I gotta admit it does give me an incentive to use the power-ups I have more wisely. I'd also have preferred the enemy combatants not be quite as predictable in their movements and reactions to my presence, as I've gotten a bit too good at ducking and/or otherwise eluding the shots they fire at me. Another downside to Quake II is that I become nauseous when I play it for long stretches! You know you're a mess when you need to pop a couple Dramamine before you play a freakin' computer game... Anyhoo, I don't know why some yahoos say that video games like this will make the people who play `em actually go out and massacre every livin' thing they see. Heck, I've been playin' this bad-boy ever since it came out, and I've never developed any such urges whatsoever... SATAN, THY DARK LORD AND MASTER, COMMANDS THEE TO KILL, KILL, KILL Whoops-- time for me to take the "happy pills" the nice orderly just handed me... `Late
"Still the standard-bearer of the gaming realm", Quake 2 is much more than a game; it's a gaming phenomenon. This game set the standards and provided the very engine of hordes of first-person shooters (as well as less kill-or-be-killed oriented games) that followed in its wake. It took online gaming to new heights with its plethora of multiplayer options. Gamers the world over designed their own maps and created their own online worlds in which to raise havoc against the Strogg hordes as well as their best buddies. Some seven years after its release (in 1997), Quake 2 is still more than capable of brazenly stealing one's entire day, weekend, week, and beyond. Quake was great fun, mind you, but there you were on defense, trying to defend your planet against these mechanistic aliens who decided that humans would make great raw material for new cyborgs (although some lucky individuals would of course find their ultimate fate in the form of exotic ingredients for certain Strogg gourmet delicacies). In Quake 2, you take the fight to the Stroggs, by gum; you smear their guts across their own walls; you add a little chaos to the uglified place they call a home planet, and you make those soldiers pay for having dared attack Earth; before you're done you bring Makron himself, the biggest and baddest Strogg of them all, to his knees before terminating him with extreme prejudice. Those Strogg are wily, though. Oh, we all thought it was a good idea to secretly follow the brutes back to Stroggos through their black hole-generated gateway; they'll never see us coming, we said, and we'll be on them like white on rice before they even have time to blink a bio-mechanical eye. We were wrong. The Stroggs took out a majority of our pods before the invasion even got started, but you made it to the planet's surface - albeit way off target. You'll have a little help from HQ in terms of your missions, but it's pretty much up to you alone to somehow infiltrate and destroy the enemy. You'll see stuff here you never saw in Quake - new monsters, much smarter enemies (the Stroggs actually learned how to duck), more puzzles (albeit of the find button and push it variety), and - best of all - more carnage. When you get one of these guys down, you'd better make sure he's dead; a guy with no legs can still shoot a gun. Some of these infernal puzzles can be frustrating at times, but just about any player can play this entire game in single-player mode and come out victorious (given enough time and saved games); then, once you start thinking you're all big and bad, you can play at a higher difficulty level. You'd better be good before challenging your friends to some multi-player mayhem; when you're ready to go online, though, you'll find countless multi-player options at your disposal. The world's pretty much your oyster when it comes to multi-player options, ensuring that Quake 2 will be played and played some more for a long time to come.
"Sweet game", This game is the best game on the pc that i've ever played! The graphics are decent but not as good as CoD or anyof the newer games but still with opengl it looks as smooth as any newer game, but with only software render it looks like a ps1 game. The gameplay is a real treat! The AI is magnificant but could be better. My favorite levels are jail through the end, you see your comrades crawling around like mindless zombies after they've been tourtured. Like once i opened a cell to let out one of my buddies. He crwaled out of his cell and started begging me to kill him, truly a work of great AI. The game also has some good expansion packs but the original quake 2 will always be the best. Multiplayer is also great, it should be since people still play a game that was made in 1998, 6years ago i mind you. So do yourself a favorand get quake 2. It may not have the graphics of quake 3 but its single player is alot better thaN UNREAL TOURNAMENT or QUAKE 3. So here is it in a nutshell, a great game with good graphics and sweeter gameplay, do yourself a favor and go by a copy, you won't regret it!
"Ughhh...", Everything about this game is terrible, which is surprising since ID used to make the most amazing games. Let's face it- since John Romero left everything has gone downhill. Rather than anxiously awaiting each level, I constantly asked myself "Will this game ever end?" The music is horrible- repetitive generic metal songs with occasional electronic elements. The monsters are boring and overused. The levels are for the most part bland, though a few do stand out. The main character also seems to have 6 different voices. There is absolutely no story whatsoever. It's just the same "Go to this room and get this item so you can go to next the room" type of game (Wolfenstien 3D, Doom, Heretic), poorly disguised. In fact, when you beat the game, instead of finding out what happens you get a screen which reads "THE END." The worst part has to be the weapons, however. The Super Shotgun goes through ammo like crazy, the Machine Gun constantly raises itself when firing so you have to keep tapping the fire button or soon you'll be shooting above your enemies, the Rail Gun takes about a second to fire, then needs to recharge itself, the Rocket Launcher also has a recharge period, and the BFG takes forever to even fire! Much longer than the original took. In short, this game was a complete letdown. I should have spent the money on a disk of Doom wads instead.
