"Enchanting"
I could never do Mysts without a walkthrough in front of me. Even then, it's not easy. I just love the landscapes and sense of loosing youself in other worlds without combat game requirements.

"Warning to all: runs only on out-of-date systems."
I can't comment on Riven itself but I can comment on the misleading marketing. I have a Mac operating Mac OS 10 on a PowerPC chip. The system requirements list only "PowerPC" as required. But in fact Riven only operates under the "Classic" environment which means Mac's running 10.2.6 or LESS. Buyer beware.

Same is true on my Dell running Windows XP --Riven only runs on older systems (e.g.,Windows 95). Again, buyer beware.

"Second great installment in the Myst saga"
I tell you this, the creators of Riven sure did their homework in the four year gap between the original Myst and Riven. The graphic improved drastically, meaning whatever computer you were running the original Myst in '93/'94 (Myst first appeared on the Mac in '93, then the PC the following year) would probably not be adequate to run Riven. Certainly Myst had made even greater improvements in the graphics department since Riven, like the 360 degree panning feature for Myst III: Exile, and even more photo-realistic graphics and animation for Myst IV: Revelation, but even for 1997 standards the graphics to Riven still hold up, although it's rather obvious the graphics looks a little more pixelated during some of the animated scenes (like when you take a ride on the cable car, probably to keep the animation fast without slowing it down for the computers of the time). But for the most part, the graphics seem so realistic you almost feel like you're there. Of course the big pain is this game consisted of 5 CD-ROM discs, which you have to swap every now and then, it's too bad they didn't have an install feature where you could install all five discs on to hard drive and only need to use one disc to play the game (like the much maligned Schizm: Mysterious Journey, a game from Poland that's very much like Myst, which had five discs in the CD-ROM version, and you had the option for full install so you didn't have to keep swapping discs).

It's agreed by most everyone that Riven is more difficult to solve than the original Myst. The puzzles often don't seem obvious, and there are some puzzles that can be frustrating, like the marble puzzle, which you have to solve in order to gain access to the domes found on Riven. Or the animal puzzle, which you'll find a bunch of stones in this one room with animal symbols that you have to push in the right order to go to another world. On the original Myst, after you won it, Atrus tells you that his wife Catherine has been taken prisoner, and on Riven, you're supposed to find and free his wife, taken prisoner by Atrus' father, Gehn. Also it looks like a different guy was playing Atrus on Riven from the original Myst, in fact it was none other than Myst creator Rand Miller who plays Atrus on Riven (as well as Myst III and IV, though I hadn't played Myst V, so I can't tell you about the game or the characters), although I'm uncertain who played Atrus on the original Myst. I really love the ambient music that goes with this, not to mention the beautiful scenery found throughout.

Although a bit tricky in places, you're certain to enjoy this game if you're in to Myst.

"The biggest Myst game"
This game actually stands up to the test of time, as opposed to Myst part one's antiquated technology, and ancient graphics...Unfortunately, I never got to play these games when they came first came out, and being spoiled with all the improvements in the visual department over the years, had to start with Riven instead of Myst. The game is probally the largest and most meticulous effort of all 5 games, simply for being a little larger and a little more designed then many of the future under-developed, but beautiful lands Myst would take us to..Obviously this game is for a certain type of "quiet" gamer, who prefers exploration and figuring out how to work a puzzle out over visceral, button mashing action..If those attributes do intriuge you as a gamer however, there is no better place and example to start with then the legendary Myst series..

"Fun game, but sometimes boring"
Most of Riven is pretty interesting, but not all of it. Some parts I find boring. They could improve the graphics a bit and mabye put better music in. There are only some songs I like. Most of the songs sound the same. There is no point to those songs.

Why I buy this one ?
- Riven is also the name of the D'ni Age in which the majority of the game takes place. In the Myst storyline this was the fifth Age written by Gehn, father of Atrus, and like all of Gehn's Ages is unstable and doomed to die.
- Although Riven is the sequel to Myst, it ties up many loose ends in the novel, Myst: The Book of Atrus. Riven starts where Myst left off, in the basement of K'veer in D'ni where Atrus remained imprisoned at the end of Myst.
- The player once again assumes the role of the Stranger, Atrus's friend. Atrus needs the Stranger's help, as his wife Catherine is trapped on the Age of Riven, written by his mad father Gehn who has proclaimed himself God of Riven and rules over its inhabitants.
- Riven is based on and expands the ultimate past and historical background of Myst, fully described in the two books (the third is Riven's sequel).

It's better to buy this one too...

What our customer's say!

"My first video game.", I hold a deep affection for this game. My brother bought it for Playstation on a whim, having never either played or heard of Myst (I still haven't played it), and I played the game alongside him, both of us consulting the walkthrough the whole time (something I now do not condone, but we were young - what do you expect?), and thoroughly enjoying it. We had hours of fun playing it over and over, memorizing the steps, the scenes, and every instance of the number 5.
This game started my love for everything Myst related, and made me realize that I can play video games too. Until seeing this game, I thought that all video games required finger dexterity and quick reflexes, neither of which do I have.
Sure, it may not be the best as far as graphics when compared to newer games, and may not have the three-dimensionality of subsequent Myst games and many newer games, but it still holds a magical quality and the storyline can't be beat. This game is a true classic, and everyone who plays adventure games should play it. As far as storyline and puzzles go, this is what adventure games should be.

"An incredible game!", Played it for the first time, after it has been out for over ten years. Great game. The puzzles are hard, but not impossible to solve. If you truly love Myst, then you will certainly love this game. (Do not use walkthroughs, it ruins the game!) Also, keep in mind that the 5-CD Riven set is for outdated computers. It will most likely not run on Vista or XP, at least not without some major glitches. Wish I had played this sooner.

"This is the Best Game of the Series! (from MYST to End of Ages)", Riven is far and away the best game of the MYST series and for that matter the best game in the first-person adventure genre. The world is very big and the graphics are substantially better than the original MYST. But the best thing is that everything is integrated with the back story and current story. There are no puzzles for the sake of puzzles to go through. Everything has a reason for being, and you get to have the joy of unlocking those reasons.

If you only get one of the games from the MYST series, then get RIVEN.

"I hate that I cheated", This is by far my favorite out of the Myst series. Before I knew better, I cheated to get to the ending, looking at walkthroughs. Unfortunately, it's not like you can 'undo' that memory in your head, and I've forever ruined the game in my eyes. The two biggie puzzles in this game involve clues from the whole game you've explored up to that point. I wish I had taken the time to fully appreciate their solution and not cheat.

"Riven: the Sequel to Myst", I preferred Myst, but this was fun - both made you think

"Enjoyable, frustrating", I told myself I was NOT going to use any hints to solve Riven. Actually I got through most of the game without hints. But then I got frustrated and finally gave in and got help. Riven is perhaps the most difficult of the Myst series. The one critical puzzle involving coded locks was so difficult that after finding the solution online, and realizing I had been on the right track towards the solution, still there was no way I would have cracked the full code, even though I had deciphered some of the code on my own. As with other Myst games, there was also one important area that I didn't find on my own, because I didn't click around enough (a small and non-obvious hot spot). There are fewer ages in Riven than in the other Myst games, and about 95% of the game consists of finding your way around the islands that make up the first age. In that respect it is a different game experience than the others. The prerendered point-and-click interface is much like the original Myst.

"Best game I've ever seen!", Well if your pondering about wether or not you should buy this game then I'll say this: This game is realy only for you if you've played Myst and loved it as much as I did. Also this game runs better on older computers and more importiantly older operting systems i.e. Windows 98. Don't ask me why, I think its becaus of its 'Hyper card' based system, thus most people I know couldn't run it on their newer more powerfull systems.

Eneyways thats the technicle stuff, now the game. The graphics are outstanding in every way, there photorealistic and very detaild, and the animations are just as amazing.

The consepts are the best I've ever seen in the Myst series, the sound is increadibly detaild in relation to Myst (if you don't use headphones your missing out on half the experianse). The music is just SO good that you can buy the soundtrack, and you should!
The Age of Riven itself is great becaus its just one huge Age (five conected islands to be sure) and giologically hanging by a thred.
And the ending just tops it all off, or writes it all off (you'll see).

"Not my favorite puzzle/adventure game.", This may just be my personal preferences, but here's what I think about Riven.
The graphics are beautiful, stunning even...but not as beautiful or stunning as those in, say, The Legacy of Time.
The puzzles are thought-provoking, but they can sometimes be difficult or impossible to understand simply because you don't know what you're looking for: there's no internal logic to the puzzles. In, say, the 7th Guest each puzzle has a clear goal, and a clear set of rules/guidelines/parameters.
The worst problem, though, is that it's lonely. I just find myself wishing for more people.
My recommendation? Borrow it from a friend or rent a copy from a video game store to see whether you enjoy it before you purchase it at full price.

"Well, it's better than Myst", I enjoy playing the Myst games once through, they are fun and challenging. However my computer would not allow me to hit a certain switch for some reason, and I was therefore never able to get to the location on the cover. Even if I had, I would never play the game again, I would know how to do everything, and therefore, what would be the point? At least it is better then Myst in which you can win within about 15 minutes of starting the game, but still... Any 60 dollar game (as it was when it was released) should last longer than this. With the detail put in, the game itself is rather short, with puzzle solving accounting for much of your time. Also some puzzles can be so frustrating when you know what to do, but can't (the stopping the scopes thing, the puzzle at the top of the dome on the first island). I thought it was a beautiful game, but I wouldn't get it unless it is below 20 dollars, otherwise I don't really think it's worth it.

"Breathtaking and mesmerizing", It goes without saying that the world of Riven is beautiful, all inclusive and fun to walk through. However, this game is based soley on its beauty. If you love walking through beautiful environments while investigating clues to the book of D'ni, then get this. You find clues, but you don't always know what they mean. This game is utterly confusing and can get VERY boring for most people. I bought a guide to help me and I got very far in the game but still didn't know what I was doing. The guide at least helped me to explore more places that I probably would never have seen.

Honestly, if you can get this game cheap -- any of the Myst series games cheap, do so if you wanted to buy it. I mean cheap like under three dollars if possible, because there isn't much to do in the game and you'll probably play a while, put it away and never look at it again. Not for impatient gamers, non gamers and not for anyone with a short attention span. The puzzles are for naught, they are hard, confusing and don't make any sense. The complete 3D world is really what you're paying for. That's why I say if you can find it cheap, buy it because it's really a waste of money otherwise, despite how beautiful it looks and sounds, there's just not much you can do besides walk around and look -- some interactions, and you may get giddy when you solve a few puzzles, but over all it's just for the fantastic visuals and music.
