"An immersive classic." Released back in 1995, Myst is a classic game that revolutionized the gaming industry. Rand and Robyn Miller created a new type of game which diverted from the typical mass market and took off into a fascinating and innovative direction. It's hailed as a landmark in the industry and praised for both its aesthetics and story.
I think that Myst is best described as an experience rather than merely a video game. Its creators strived to develop a world rich with detail and intrigue, with a subtle narrative intertwined into the strange yet beautiful surroundings. As the game begins, you are dropped onto the island of Myst without very much information to guide you. What immediately strikes you as unique about this experience is that there are no friendly characters to help you on your way, no enemies to fight, and not a very clear purpose. The game is largely about just exploring your surroundings and experimenting with different devices around the various worlds. This is what makes the game so immersive. The graphics of Myst, though not quite as extravagant as today's, were definitely of high quality. Cyan built its 3D world through an extensive layout of still images and QuickTime movies, and the end result is simply amazing. Navigation is node-based, meaning that you don't necessarily walk through the environment but rather point and click your way through your surroundings. Each new section loads as if you really had relocated, giving the appearance of movement. Making a 3D world in this manner might seem strange, but at the time it was a necessary shortcut to make it possible to run the game on computers without a lot of RAM and processor power. Even by today's standards, I still think the environments look impressive.
So what exactly does the gameplay entail? As you explore the island, you discover two journals with missing pages, each of which belong to Atrus's sons, Sirrus and Achenar. Your main objective is to travel through the different worlds, or Ages, and retrieve the missing pages from each book. As you recover each page, you learn more about each brother, and you must try to discover who is lying and who is telling the truth. In the end, it will be up to you to decide their respective fates. Your journey is not easy, for you will have to solve rather challenging puzzles in order to progress throughout the worlds. This can often be frustrating, for the puzzles' solutions are not always intuitive. It will take much patience and observation, and perhaps even a little help.
The sounds in this game are mysterious and enchanting. The soundtrack consists of strange, sometimes haunting tunes that blend in remarkably well with each respective area. Moreover, the sounds are integral to the gameplay, for some of the puzzles involve listening in addition to seeing. You will need to observe and interpret different sounds and apply that information to the challenges you face. This is yet another way in which you can truly become immersed within the game. The music makes your surroundings feel foreign and believable.
Myst was groundbreaking for its time, and it started an incredible journey that would spark several sequels. It's an experience that is visually, musically, and intellectually stimulating, and though the game is a bit dated now, I still think it's worth playing if you enjoy a good challenge. As many have mentioned, the ending is somewhat anticlimactic, but at the same time it will most likely make you want to continue the adventure with Riven.
"Best game ever made!" Thinking on buying this game? Do it! Do it now! This game is the best thing I've ever played, and will be for a very long time! If you're into anything visual, then this game has you written all over it. The graphics are great! If you have an older computer with an operating system such as 95-98 it should run really well. And if you really want to get into it then I'd recommend buying 'The Book of Atrus' wich is a novel to go with the game.
"Excellent!" One of the best adventure games ever! Shame it's for older computers and it makes me miss mine. If the gaming companies ever remake Myst for XP I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.
"bring me the blue pages" myst is strictly a one-player game, other players can play when your journey has been "saved". i preferred two-player games like mortal combat where the action is fast and someone "wins". the style of myst is "point and click" and your pace is self directed. having a high patiance level is paramount if you want to finish myst. once you solve all the puzzles and reach the end ....the game loses its appeal. this review might sound pessimistic, but i think its real in its approach. as the sequalls evolved, so did the hint books. i personally disagree with the whole concept of a "hint book". its self defeating by having the game "spoon fed" to me. i actually liked myst but i still wouldnt call it "fun"......"fun" is a two player game of mortal combat (at least you get to say i whipped your ***)
"A legend in video gaming" After Myst, the whole series became my favorite games to play on my computer. The worlds were simplistic but amazing. My personal favorite was Channelwood because I'm a nature-lover like that. Selenetic kind of irritated me though--at the time that I first went through this game, I had no musical knowledge, causing it to take forever for me to figure out the keyboard thing to get to the linking book into the Age (however now I know enough about music that doing this puzzle is much easier). Then I was further irritated to find few other things I had to do to get through and out of the age. Mechanical was frustrating because rotating the building is a lot more difficult than it is in the simulator. Stoneship was fine except the battery ran out and the lights shut off on me a few times, but I suppose that was my own fault. There was also another quirk that still bothers me now--once you do the game once, it's five times easier to do again. (Myst players: Know what I mean? Future Myst players: You'll see what I mean) Also, there was another thing that kind of inhibited my gaming experience the first time I went through the game that I suppose was my own fault: I was nine or ten years old at the time. This meant that A) I had little logical capacity, which made the game much more difficult for me, B) I had little to no appreciation for beauty, which made me just want to beat the game and be done, C) I didn't fully understand the plot, and D) I was an extremely impatient little brat at the time. Frustrating things aside, I give Myst 5 stars because it is an amazing game and a prelude to an even better series. However I wouldn't recommend it to a nine or ten year old, because they would become frustrated very quickly. The Myst series would generally be for more patient people like me who like to sit in front of their computers for hours figuring stuff out, exploring every nook and cranny of different worlds, and marveling at the genius who has a big enough imagination to come up with things like this.

What our customer's say!
"You can play this in Windows XP", Some reviewers have complained that you cannot play this in windows xp, but you can. Goto "my computer"; click on "program files"; click on "myst".......this is after you have installed the game; right click on the game icon...... a picture of a book; click "properties"; click the "compatibilty" tab; check both boxes that say "run in 256 colors" and "run in 640 x 480 resolution"; click "apply"; then click on game icon and enjoy. The game is hard but fun if you have patience and like thinking games.
"Myst", Too hard for me. I have been using a walkthrough to figure it out. O.K., but not what I had hoped for. Least favorite game so far that I have purchased. Kids probably love it but it's not for this 61 year old granny.
"Let the world and the story immerse you--I love this game!", Contrary to my usual reviewing style, there is little I can add that would be different from what previous reviewers have said. Plus, being that this is a game, I would not be doing well to give anything away to those who have not yet played/beaten Myst.
If you like(d) Myst, I strongly recommend that you purchase more games from the Myst franchise, as well as the three epic Myst novels. These in particular are all fantastic works, and they give background information that makes the Myst story come alive. I guarantee you will like the other Myst games and the novels.
My only suggestion is to seek this game in its later, remade incarnations (the one where it's included along with the second and third games in the series is the best value) because there is no real point in pursuing an old, original copy.
A side note: This game, at least in its original incarnation (this one, in other words), has very poor Vista compatibility. Upon installation, Quicktime kicks up some Dickens but allows the game to install and run. The game hangs on a regular basis, crashes frequently, and, as a result of the Quicktime issue, none of the movies work. This means that, unless you've played the game before, a vital part of the game play is missing. There are some eerie absences where those movies should be. Essentially, the original Myst game is no fun whatsoever on Vista. Later editions and rehashes are likely more compatible, and I have read as much. I include this information only for the benefit of those, like me, who have a legacy copy of the game from the original release.
All in all, there really isn't much to say. If you've played Myst, then you know. You just KNOW. And, if you haven't played it yet, what are you waiting for? Get ready to embark on one of the most engrossing and immersing journeys you'll ever face. Oh, and be prepared to become hopelessly obsessed with Myst--it really is "...the surrealistic adventure that will become your world."
"graphics be darned!", What's amazing about how great this game is...well, it's that it does not rely on insane graphics, large amounts of memory, lightning-quick processing speeds, or mind-blowing sound.
In fact, this game has none of those things.
What it has is the ability to get right under your skin, suck you in, and keep you playing. What's eerie is how much you feel like you're in the game when the graphics really aren't much to speak of (especially compared to today's games).
I played and finished this game back in 1995. I own other game platforms (PS2, etc) and I have played many other games since then. None of them is like this one.
"Still Sharp After 10 Years!", I played this game before I understood what a computer actually was... Needless to say I have few memories of ever playing it before the age of... well 15... However, just this summer I stumbled upon it; the saga of Myst. Due to an undescribable want to play (and finish) Myst, I ran it to my PC and installed my original copy. Then the story began...
After about 6 hours of hard work and unending determination I finished the first chapter in the Ages of Myst... Though that doesn't seem like all too much gameplay, I acknowledge my haste and unrelentless desire to complete the game. Of course for the past 10 years I owned Myst I never actually got to finish it. Victory is mine!
Nonetheless I enjoyed every waking minute of playing this game. I look forward to finding Rivin and Myst III; I know I have them somewhere...
In fact, I've been so swept by the gameplay and challenge that I just bought both Myst IV and Myst V from Amazon.
Don't let this puzzle adventure game slip by, in fact explore the whole series! With a combined total of 80 hours of gameplay, you'll be busy.

"It's a Memory Maker.", If I could erase one memory from my mind, it would be this game. Why? Because I'd love to play it again from scratch.
This game is for adventurers who love solving mysteries without a time limit. No one hunts you down. No monsters or armed killers hide in the shadows. There is no annoying background music, only beautiful sound effects and water lapping up on the shoreline. The graphics are breathtaking.
The puzzles made sense (unlike later Myst games). You solve them by gathering clues scattered throughout the different Ages. Even when I had no idea where to proceed next, I found the landscape and buildings intriguing. Sometimes I simply "strolled" the island just to absorb its beauty and tranquility.
When I least expected it, I'd run into a clue or a secret passageway. It was thrilling. To finally solve a puzzle was ecstasy.
This game has a Zip feature that allows you to race through areas of the island you've already explored. Myst is never boring.
Every sound you hear could be a clue to something else. This game is loaded with gizmos and gadgets to click on. Some are clues. Some are not. All are fascinating.
The memory of Myst will stay with you forever.
"Myst Set the Standard for Computer Games", Myst was the first home computer game to win a broad based audience. It was a rage in the mid-1990's when it first came out, and it has intrigued game players and non-game players alike. Selling like grandma's homemade hotcakes in a lumberjack camp, Myst won Ubisoft, the manufacturer, awards and of course lots and lots of money.
Myst is different in that it is not a shoot 'em up arcade-style game. You are "dumped" on an island and you have to figure out various puzzles to "win" the game. The puzzles are challenging and engaging. They will hook you into the game and keep you playing for hours of mental stimulation - explain it as "getting your mental exercise" when your spouse complains that you are spending too much time in front of the computer screen.
One final note, some gamers may not like this style of a game, as it is an intellectual pursuit rather than a "test your reflexes" game. You may spent hours looking for little clues to solve a complex puzzle. You also have to learn to use objects and machines and see what effect they have on the environment. It is very involved, and unless you are motivated to solve puzzles in this fashion, you will quickly become frustrated with the game and quit. It may take months to figure out the game and reach the end! Some simply do not have the patience to play a game and have to pour so much time and energy into it. If you need to solve your games instantly for gratification, then this is not the game for you.
Myst was the first computer game I really came to admire for its complexity and interest factor. The graphics were mind-blowing when the game first came out, but now appear amateurish compared to recent releases in the Myst series. Still, it stands the test of time and is a good place to start for beginning computer gamers.

"Myst - the most unforgettable computer game ever!", Of all the computer games I have ever played, the one that I remember most fondly, and that I wish I could own again the most, is Myst.
Myst is fascinating in many ways. The story behind it is unique, but unravels with great mysteriouness. The worlds that you are taken to in the game are beyond belief in the realism to them. There are a lot of mysteries about Myst, which are solvable by completing various intriguing puzzles throughout the game.
My memory of Myst consists of memories of beautiful landscapes, amazing worlds, secret passageways, questions, and exciting answers. Myst is a game that will suck you in and make you feel like you are actually there. It is different from any game you have ever played - it isn't point and shoot, answers aren't given to you easily, and never have I seen graphics so stunning - I have wished many times that the places in Myst really did exist.
If you like solving puzzles, are willing to play something challenging, and/or are looking for game unlike any other, Myst is the game for you. The experience of playing Myst is utterly unforgettable - Myst is enchanting!
"Watch Out", This is the Windows 95 version of this game. It won't work with the newer versions of Windows.
"Cool Game!!!", This game is a must have for people who enjoy rpg games. at times it can get a little tricky, but dont let that get in the way of buying it. Myst will keep you entertained for weeks on end.
