Others say..."Bad color, bad framerate, installs well"I think peoples' expectations of web cams are so low that they rate things at 4 or 5 stars too easily. This camera is lousy, and isn't worth $90. The details: Installation: GOOD. Installed on a Win2k Pro SP4. No problem at all. COLOR: Terrible. No matter how you set the controls, use auto or manual, or mess with the settings, the green/red/blue color rendition is always awful. Color shades are all wrong - either too vivid, too washed out, too green, to intense, etc. FRAME RATE: Terrible. There are 3 settings for picture quality vs frame rate. On "high" quality, you get a nice smooth picture with so-so color, and a frame rate of 7 fps (I measured it). On medium, the picture is very grainy, so you can turn down the sharpness, which helps "somewhat" - frame rate is now 15 fps. On "low", the picture is downright awful, with grain, and jagged lines, and the frame rate is still only about 19 fps. It cannot do 30 fps, nowhere near it, not at 160x120, 176x144, 320x240. Forget it. CPU: Good. Uses about the same as other good webcams I've tried --- about 20% of a PIII 900 MHz to capture 320x240 at 15 fps. LIGHT SENSITIVITY: Good. The picture quality does not degrade, and the frame rate doesn't drop in low light, and the picture is plenty bright enough. Unfortunately, the picture is NEVER good, and the frame rate is never good, so this is of little value. Go try a Logitech Quickcam Pro 4000 or an Intel CS430 and you'll see what a good web cam is capable of.
"I own three and run them on Win2K and XP" Although it says that the camera is not Windows certified when it is being stalled, I have no problem whatsoever. I got the latest driver from vividcommunications.com. I have no idea why some people report low-light problem or color problems but this camera is the best that I've used in term of clarity and low-light capability. I think once you figure out how to set this camera up, you'd enjoy this camera. With interchangable lenses, the camera can cover a wide range of angles. As for mounting, I went to Best Buy and got a pair of speaker wall mounts for about $$, which provides all the adjustment angles you'd need. You only need one mount for each camera but have to buy them in pairs, as they are made for speakers. Good luck to those who are getting a webcam. If you need more info on the mount, just contact me.
"Best Webcam I have ever seen" I have purchased and thrown away more webcams than I care to admit having purchased. This no longer in production webcam is the best I have ever seen. I hope someone will put it back in production!
"3com review" Easy install in windows XP. Good picture quality. Jammin
"Best by far" I've been looking for a good webcam for quite some time now, unfortunately, all the top reviews went to the 3com homeconnect which was discontinued. Next best seemed to be a bit of a toss up and I pumped for a Logitech 4000. This cam is pretty good but was still a bit of a letdown in some areas. Focussing, stand, low light ability etc. Not as good as I was hoping for so I decided to look harder for a 3com. I struck lucky! They are not in fact hard to get. Brand new and spectacular performers. The cam is available from many places on-line and varies wildly in price, so search around. Performance and installation: I'm running WinXP sp1 and theinstallation was simple, fast and faultless... took about 3 minutes in total and I was broadcasting. Good so-far. I took a look at the picture quality and was quite taken aback by how sharp and clear the picture was. Auto White balance is very good, something the Logitech is bad at. Low light capability is stunning for a webcam. Build quality looks good, far more robust than most others I've looked at and although the cable is quite cumbersome for a light camera, it's not too big of a problem. The tripod screw base is a good point too if you want to mount it somewhere uneven. It comes with an array of comprehensive image controlls via software and is very easy to set up and tweak. The default settings, apart from the default resolution setting, is good though. Excellent performer and worth every penny.

What our customer's say!"Barely Works", Very unhappy with this. Setup was a breeze contrary to much I have read but the picture quality is horrible because this camera is very used and very beat up. Upon first connect the images were a total washed out blur. I removed to lens to clean it all and it looked like milk or oil had been spilled all over this camera in the past. After much cleaning the images are now almost recognizable. Still very poor, I can't believe someone would sell a product, new or used, in this poor condition. Zero stars if I could. My $19 Labtec cam takes far better pictures. The 3Com HomeConnect might be good, I don't know because the one I got is in such bad shape. "TOO bad 3COM Web Cams are a thing of the past....", These webcams are excellent and it is a shame that they no longer make these web cams anymore... You will be able to buy them from Auction sites (e.g., Ebay) or here at Amazon... but most likely, you will have to search endlessly for the Drivers of the item! When you find the Drivers that you need to run this item... You will find an excellent, high quality webcam and worth the price! I use webcams for a living (conference calls..etc...) and own top-of-the-line video conferencing cameras... and for the price of these cameras... they are worth it! "Fantastic Camera", This thing rocks. You can put it in a pitch black room turn it on sit in front of it and light a candle anywhere in the room (given the room is not really huge) and it will auto adjust and look perfect in a few moments "Dissatisfaction", The seller didn't include USB cable to get the cam running or the software, charged almost $6 for s/h and he only spent $1.42 and arrived 13 days after the date of order. "GREAT webcam!", WOW! I'm impressed! And I live in Hollywood CA, the land of people who are no longer impressed by much of anything ;-) I have several other cameras of various sorts. They're mottled, grainy, washed out, and in general just nasty. Heck, I'd even be embarrassed to put YOUR picture on it :-) But the 3Com picture is different. This thing has a professional quality picture, and the utilities have more adjustments than an Enron finaincial statement. Even though 3com discontinued it, the camera, lens kit (wide, closeup, telephoto), and software that actually works are available from http://www.vividcommunications.com My one gripe right now is that I can't get the frame speed high enough in low light, but I'm sure it can be done with the right tweaks (so anyone - HELP!)
Read this reviews before You buy...
"BEST WEBCAM EVER", The best webcam up to this date. I have tried Logitech Quickcam Pro 4000, and still until today..March 2003, this it the best webcam....also works under Windows XP Service Pack 1
"Great Camera", I bought three of these cameras, so my family and I can stay in touch. I upgraded to XP, and was shocked when I went to install it, and it would not work. I was already to buy a new camera, when I by chance, looked at some of these reviews. Thanks to those who provided a link to the XP Driver. I really like this camera, and I am looking forward to using it on my XP machine.
"Don't ever buy this cam because there are no drivers for xp", I got this cam a year ago, very good picture quality but when i upgraded to windows xp pro and go to the site of 3com to look for a driver for this cam, they got not a single driver available......they didn't support the cam anymore,to old ........so....... no more driverupdates, so i wasted my money on that thing, i have a major company that made software for conferencing ..... so i will never buy a single product anymore from 3com
"OK, but watch out!", As expected with any CCD, mine got a hospot burned into the image where the sun hit the camera at the same point every afternoon (I have it watching my front pasture). I have since adjusted the position. ALSO: A lot of the software included is actually DEMO versions and if you want to use them for more than just play you either have to go buy the full version or hack around your setup to work aroung the limits of the demo version (this seems to be a common, but still misleading, way all the cam manufactures bundle the software with their webcams.
"Be Careful", Great camera. In fact if it weren't for the following problem I would give it 6 stars. The problem is the driver won't work with Windows XP and 3 Com is dicontinuing this camera so they aren't going to develop a driver that works with XP. Low blow 3 Com.
