"Absolutely destroys the original."
Bigger, better, faster.
Everything that was good about the first one was turned up ten notches for the sequel.
Great story, great effects even after all these years.
Not one weak link in this masterpiece.
One of my top twenty movies of all time, no doubt.
A must see, a must own!!!
Too bad it's been all down hill for the franchise after this.
Bummer.

"Aliens"
A family member (not me) has watched this movie so many times, that "I" can rattle off some of the dialogue while the movie is playing in the other room.

He loves the Director's cut- many of the scenes have only been changed in the original by a few words.

A definate classic in this home.

"Not nearly as good as the original. Poor acting."
Sigourney Weaver is the only really good cast member of this movie. The little girl is 2nd. Otherwise, the acting is just horribly bad.

The movie has none of the subtle menace of the original. The original was a work of art. This is just a (too-long) popcorn flick.

The special effects are very nice. But please, the props are "dated" because Ridley Scott's high standards of set design were allowed to erode. This is how you raise the budget hugely, yet end up with a cheaper-looking movie as a result.

Don't get me wrong, this is an entertaining movie despite some horrible, cringe-worthy acting and poor editing. But the original was a masterwork. Don't confuse the two.

"A RARE SEQUEL THAT STANDS UP TO THE ORIGINAL!"
This film has a completely different feel than the original film! This is a good thing, rather than make the same movie Ridley Scott did, James Cameron, goes all out in this explosive action Sci-Fi thriller! Great FX slow pacing and slam bang action make this one heck of a thrill ride!

The creature design has been tweaked in this sequel and we get to see more of it and we get to see more of them! The Queen is a site to behold and the finale is probably the best "Cat Fight" in film history! I rate the film 4 1/2 stars only because the length could have been trimmed a little and Bill Paxton is the most whiniest marine I've even seen, even though he delivers some of the best lines in the movie. The DVD transfer on the box set is fantastic and you get two versions of the movie and plenty of extra material. The box set is the way to go!

"One of the greatest action /sci-fi movies ever made"
"Aliens" Directed by James Cameron

Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) barely escaped an encounter with an Alien. All of her crew and her ship were destroyed while fighting it. When the encounter ended Ripley places herself in cryogenic sleep for the ride home. Something goes wrong and Ripley remains in cryo sleep for over 50 years and is luckily found by a deep salvage mission. Instead of a reward for heroism Ripley and her story are met with skepticism by the company who owned the ship that was destroyed by the Alien. Her story is in doubt due to the fact that the planet from which the Alien was picked up is currently colonized and no Alien encounter has been reported. Ripley attempts to deal with what happened and the scrutiny and doubt she has received from her former employer. Contact is suddenly lost from the planet and the company request that Ripley accompany the military back to the planet to supervise the situation. It is promised that her pilot's license will be reinstated is she goes. Ripley can't seem to put the event behind her and needs to see it through to the end. Carter Burke (Paul Reiser) assures her that she has nothing to fear. The military will bring ample firepower to handle any situation...

"Aliens" is one of my all time favorite movies and has to be one of the best action / Sci-fi movies ever made. From top to bottom, screen play, acting, characters, action and special effects "Aliens" Does not disappoint. After reading other comments here it appears that all of the nay sayers of this movie are die hard fans of "Alien (The Director's Cut)" the original movie by Ridley Scott. It almost isn't fair to compare the two movies because although they share characters they represent different genres of film making with "Alien" being more of a horror movie and "Aliens" being and action movie. If I was forced to compare the two it is my honest opinion that "Aliens" is head and shoulders above its predecessor which doesn't usually happen with sequels. This may be due to my preference of action movies over horror movies but as I said it is really hard to make an honest comparison because the movies are so different from one another.

The Good: Great acting all around and great characters as well. One of my favorite characters is Hudson played by Bill Paxton. His lines provide some comedic relief but it isn't approached in the typical campy way it is in other action movies with lame one liners and the like.

The screenplay was great. A lot of action movies go way overboard with over the top comic relief, lame one liners, and indestructible good guys. "Aliens" plays it straight from beginning to end and it works spectacularly.

Great cinematography. The lighting and lack of lighting in the scenes was great and helps keep the movie tense. The soundtrack and sound effect were also an irreplaceable aspect and helped to carry the story and acting to the next level. Every time you hear the motion tracker beeping you know something is about to go down and the suspense starts building.

The Bad: Absolutely nothing.

Overall: One of the greatest actions movies made to date and if you haven't viewed this get to the video store and check it out!

"The best of the Alien movies ", Aliens, the sequel to Alien, is the best of the Alien quadrilogy, and is one of the most influential science fiction movies ever made. You can find references to this movie in sources as diverse as the film "Starship Troopers," the PC game "Starcraft" and TV's "Battle Star Galactica." In a three way tie with "Bladerunner," and "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back," for best science fiction film ever made, Aliens is a thrill ride with some of the most chilling visuals of any horror/science fiction film. Lt. Ripley is also one of the most memorable characters in any sci-fi movie or science fiction franchise. Aliens is so good, I can almost forgive Sigourney Weaver for her recent, ridiculously cheesy Direct TV commercial.

"An Engaging Thriller", This isn't so much a strict sequel to Alien as it is a re-imagining of the Alien mythos. As one of the greatest horror films ever made, Aliens couldn't possibly have been an acceptable follow-up if Cameron had tried making it a horror film. Luckily, the very smart decision was made to turn Aliens into an action-thriller film, and it succeeds. Aliens, while an entirely different sort of film, is taut, engaging, and very well-made.

The characters and plot are nothing special here. In Alien, the real star of the show was the Nostromo. The dark, claustrophobic spaceship provided the perfect backdrop for Giger's shadowy creation to stalk around. In Aliens, the aliens themselves are the stars. Whereas we never get too clear a picture of the adult alien in the first film (even at the end, the creature is still guised in shadow), aliens are quite clearly visible in this film. The special effects are magnificent. The queen alien is perhaps one of the most majestic and terrifying creatures ever to appear in a film. And Ripley's final descent into the collapsing hive is a visceral and disturbing descent into Hell itself.

The action is intense, the various moments of anticipation are nerve-wracking, the special effects are eye-popping, and the story, if more conventional, is adequate for the purposes of the film. The acting is a bit weak in some areas, but not enough to be distracting. Overall, this is a solid and entertaining film, and one of the few instances where a sequel actually manages to be decent.

"A Better Film", "Aliens" shows a vast improvement over the first Alien film, which--in my opinion--isn't the classic it's made out to be. You can see my elaboration on that in my review for that film; but as for this movie, I was much more satisfied with the story, characters, and even direction than I was in the first film.

Writer/director James Cameron shows an effort to make this film a bit more character oriented than the first film, which didn't give us a chance to connect with the characters. Ripley is fleshed out by the appearance of Newt, a young girl whose family has been killed by the aliens. We now see Ripley not only fighting for her life, but fighting for Newt's as well. She grows to care very much for the little girl, which creates some very strong suspense during the violent and thrilling climax. Another character that, despite his short screen time, feels fully fleshed out and real is the android Bishop, who I had grown very attached to by the end of the movie. The other characters other than Ripley, Newt, and Bishop aren't really that fleshed out, and the military personnel often revert to cliches and one-dimensional characters.

The acting isn't all that great--especially with the panicky soldier that says "we're done for meeyyan!" every five seconds--and even Sigourney Weaver doesn't give an all around impressive performance. What she does handle well, and what the entire film handles well actually, is the climax, where Ripley (Weaver) races to find Newt, throwing herself into a building infested with full sized aliens, face-huggers, and something much worse and much bigger.

Overall, this film easily beats out its predecessor for best Alien movie. I'm definitely on board to see the other two films in the series, and see if they--despite what critics have said about them--can compare.

6/10

"One of my favorite movies of all time", Let me begin by saying, I'm a huge fan of the first two movies in the series, specifically Alien. I loved the nail biting suspense of not knowing what the creature looked like or where it was, or even what it could do. Suspense... that was the first movie.

Action... that is this movie. Almost from the beginning we have aliens and gunshots to keep us entertained and at the edge of our seat.

Aliens takes place after Ellen Ripley (Weaver) returns to earth from the first movie. Plagued by nightmares and the loss of her child (an added scene to the DVD which gives a bit more depth to he character). Enter Paul Reiser as the token corporate schmuk who gets Ellen to return to the planet LV426 (where they answered the distress call in the first movie and picked up the Alien). Apparently there has been a colony of people living there setting up an atmosphere on the planet that are suddenly not responding.

Somewhere in all of this There is added in footage of the terraformers (settlers) which explains how the aliens got to the colony in the first place. This scene also gives more background on Newt.

So Ripley and a group of Marines (Bill Paxton, Michael Bienn, Lance Hendriksen and several others) set out to determine what happened to the missing colonists.

Once they land on the planet the non-stop action begins. Instead of just one alien wreaking havoc on a ship, there are now legions of them crawling all over the settlement. It turns into a life and death game of war between the two species as the humans attempt to survive in this dangerous environment.

One of the main differences between this film and the first one is that they have no problem showing the aliens to you. This takes some of the mystery out of them, however they are no less frightening. Also we are given a better understanding of how the aliens work in this movie, setting up for the third and fourth films in the series.

Another difference is in the sheer action of this flick, this one is more about gun fire, grenades, flame throwers, and painful death scenes. Unlike many action movies however, the characters are interesting and we are saddened by their demise. Even Bishop (Lance Hendriksen) the android becomes a lovable character.

There are 17 minutes of additional footage that have been added into the film since the theatrical release, I was able to find most of it, but I'm sure some is just added shots in the action sequences.

The Special Features on the DVD include cut scenes, Trailers, a slide show and a Behind the Scenes. Honestly I was disappointed because the behind the scenes wasn't the one I expected it to be. At one time I saw on TV a behind the scenes special that was very interesting and informative, this seemed to be a chopped down and edited version of that.

Incase you haven't seen the movie, the acting is believable, somewhat above what you would expect in an action adventure film. Some of the lines are a bit forced but nothing takes away from the viewer's enjoyment of the film. The script is interesting and easy to follow, I have to admit that the added in footage did help explain several of the questions I had in the original version of the movie.

The special FX are awesome and totally believable except for one awful blue screen shot at the end. All of the creatures are realistic and frightening. The sets are dark, dismal, and add to the overall feel of the film. (My mom always asks why in the future everything has to be so ugly). The action scenes are fluid and exciting to watch. I have nothing negative to say about the movie.

If you like the film buy the DVD to get the additional footage and to own a classic Action/Horror Flick. Don't buy it just for the DVD extras because they aren't all that exciting.

"One of the Great Movies.", Aliens is the best of the Alien series of films, it is one of the greatest action films ever made, and it is, along with The Terminator and The Abyss, one of the defining films of James Cameron's early career.

This DVD presents both the adrenaline pumping, oppressive, upsetting, and exciting theatrical cut, and the longer, better developed director's cut. Both are excellent films, and for the picture to be truly appreciated, both are essential. If one is better, it is the theatrical cut: the filmmakers were forced to jettison all but the essential pieces of the story and action, making for a brutal, exhilarating ride.

The special features are equally worthwhile, most especially the commentary and introduction by Cameron. The film speaks for itself, however, and we should each feel individually privileged to have both versions presented to us in such excellent sound and picture quality.

"Commentary nearly as entertaining as the movie", I've listened to a lot of DVD commentaries before, and I'd have to say this is easily one of the best. Between the cast and crew, there are enough bits of trivia, hilarious anecdotes and behind-the-scenes factoids (technical and otherwise, like the hurdles overcome to get the film made) to keep just about any listener enthralled for the entire length of the movie. It could have been better with Sigourney and Paul Reiser included, but their absence isn't as conspicuous as you'd think since they are talked about plenty (all positively, of course).

The bonus disc is also interesting, but similar to the extras on "T2: Judgment Day," they are exhaustive and exhausting. Whereas most DVDs don't go into enough detail, I think Cameron's go into too much. These at least aren't presented in text form as they were on "T2," which was enormously tedious. It was really great to see the actors all these years later, including Carrie "Newt" Henn all grown up.

As special editions go, I'd say this one is worth every penny (even if bought at full retail). It's pretty rare to find a commentary that's almost more entertaining than the movie itself, but this absolutely is.

"Aliens", I ordered this to add to my collection and was very pleased. Loved the behind the scenes footage and the extra 17 minutes of restored footage. Just what a movie collector likes. Glad to have this as part of my Sci-Fi collection.

"One of the best", For one if you've never seen this movie.....you need to remedy that. It has it all a great story, good acting and a whole lot of future MARINE weapons. This movie will always be one the best ever made.

"Theatrical release was better.", Aliens: The Director's Cut (James Cameron, 1986)

Back in the day, when both the Alien franchise and James Cameron were good, the two got teamed up on the first sequel to Ridley Scott's classic. And ever since, fanboys and critics have been arguing over whether Alien or Aliens is the better film. That's pretty damned impressive for a sequel, especially a sequel that was not only not directed by the same director, but a sequel that was directed by the guy who had helmed Piranha II: The Spawning. (Which is, in my mind, still James Cameron's best movie.) Some time later, after James Cameron had become a Hollywood A-lit demideity to rival Steven Spielberg, and Alien had grown into a four-film series whose marketers were incapable of remembering the word "quartet", both had the muscle to get Cameron's director's cut of Aliens released. It will not be argued over by critics. Maybe fanboys, but not critics.

I grant you, as with many director's cuts, most of what is put back in is five seconds here, five seconds there, and every once in a while an interesting minute-or-two scene. (There's an entire, if very minor, subplot involving Ripley's daughter that was excised from the theatrical release; while it's nice to see it back in, it really doesn't do thing one for Ripley's character development, which is probably why it got tossed in the first place.) And most of that is worthwhile. There is, however, one extended scene that's an absolute killer, and should teach kiddies the value of editing staff on a film crew. About half an hour into the movie (in the theatrical release, it comes between Ripley facing the committee who suspends her license and what has always been one of my favorite shots in the movie, the cigarette burned down to its stub in Ripley's fingers), we see a scene at the base before the aliens come and say hey. People going on, living their lives, etc., and a family of folks (Newt's family, natch) heading out to salvage the spacecraft because they've had a communique from Earth that there might be something interesting there. Why does excising this scene make Aliens: The Theatrical Cut such a better film? Well, first, because all the nuggets of information we are given here are also given later in the film. (Though it was nice to see another shot of the derelict spaceship from the original film.) Mostly, however, it's because when we see the base for the first time after the alien attack, we don't know it. We're seeing it for the first time with the marines. The suspense and tension in that scene are pitch-perfect. But if you've seen the base beforehand and gotten an idea of its layout, it's a case of "oh, yeah, we've been here before." It just ain't the same, you know?

One thing it does do, however, is show that the James Cameron we got to know in the late nineties, who makes bloated, silly, unwatchable movies like True Lies and Titanic, was always there. He just had better teams behind him. (I should add that since Cameron went exclusively into the world of documentaries, he's reacquired the lean-and-mean approach, and they're a whole lot better than True Lies and Titanic.) So I can see value in this, but from the perspective of the movie itself, there's no contest: the theatrical release is way, way better. ** ½

"ok", When I was a kid, it just blew my mind to see this movie. However, as an adult, it really fell short of what I needed to be fully entertained. It is an "ok" movie at best.
