"Respectfully Disagree" In writing this review, I realize that I'm probably going to get negative votes, and that's okay with me because I'm bigger on being honest when writing these than getting helpful votes. But I'll just ask ALIEN lovers to respect the other-side, because I can see that a lot of people truly love this film and I totally respect that. But the movie, in my opinion, isn't the classic it's cracked up to be.
First, it moves with the speed of a glacier, and I'm not exaggerating. By the time I'd gotten to the hour and fifteen minute mark, I could count the events that had happened on one hand. Now, I've seen some other reviews say that the slow pace is essential in building the tension, but I'd disagree. I was never left enthralled by the world or the ship the camera so slowly pans around, and I never once felt the tension that said pace was supposed to build. Unlike Alfred Hitchcock's work or even the early works of Shyamalan, "Alien" lacks tension and just seems to float in the emptiness of space. Now, there could have been another reason for the slow pace, and that could be for director Ridley Scott to show how beautiful and complex his cinematography is. However, it doesn't have the intricacy for that to be the case, because never once did I marvel at a short like I did in another slow-paced, "director's film," There Will Be Blood. I just don't get what the point was. Slow pace, if done right, can be enthralling--heck, I'm a Stephen King fan, and that guy spends hundreds of pages setting up a story before getting to the meat and I don't mind--but that isn't the case with "Alien."
Another thing is the characters. The time that could have been used to develop these characters and flesh them out so they could be more than just talking heads who get killed off one by one was instead spent showing them waking up and eating. The dialogue never really rings true, despite Sigourney Weaver's nice performance, which prevents this film from being a total downer. From the climax to the final scenes of the movie, she was interesting to watch as she overcame her state of panic and truly fought back against the Alien threat, but other than that (and the scenes where they try to find the cat, which serve to add a spark of humanity to otherwise undeveloped characters) the characters don't connect at all.
The movie isn't all bad. Like I said, I liked Weaver's performance and a few select scenes, such as the "Find Jones!" bit. Also, the Alien itself is designed masterfully and has, of course, become an iconic image. It says a lot when a movie monster designed so long ago can still evoke fear, and that creature certainly does. The movie as a whole, though? In my opinion, it does not.
4/10
"Don't touch the egg............" Seen this movie years back. Excellent plot, fx. and acting. Not munch I could say that have not been said already. Alien it's far-more better then the Star Wars trilogy.
"The Best" Well, I have just watched (yet again) Ridley Scott's sci-fi masterpiece: Alien. The patient pace of the film taken with its stunning cinematography makes for a veritable visual feast. Scott can turn a clunky shipping vessel into a haunting work of art: his masterful orchestration of light and shadow within a wonderfully drab and metallic set casts the perfect visual mood for the encounter with the 'other.' The performances, too, are simply fantastic. The cast hits a wonderful sweet spot in refusing to over act their parts, rendering the characters surprisingly tactile: they brilliantly animate a minimalist but very competent script. In any case, it hard to find anything to criticize about this film, which is why I think it tops my list of best sci-fi films ever.
"A landmark in movie making." First things first. Aliens destroys this one. Ok I'm done. It's actually kind of unfair to compare the two. The directors take such a different approach to the films. Alien is a piece of movie history. Brilliant from start to finish. Masterfully acted and directed. Superbly paced. One of the many movies you simply can not miss and should probably own by now. Highly recommended.
"Best of my top ten scariest movies " Okay, I don't own this movie, but I have seen it. It is on my list of the best top ten scariest movies.

What our customer's say!
"Incredibly good suspense film ", This is an amazing film that has so much suspense and atmosphere it truly pulls the viewer in. There's plenty of shocks which are excellently timed, and when the alien does appear it doesn't disappoint in the least. The cast are all superb and the direction is incredible.
A fantastic film.
"Alien- Amazing Female Lead in SciFi/Horror Classic", When I first saw this in the theatrical release, I was stunned: an amazing female lead (Weaver) and a mind-bending, artistic look. The very essence of this movie is also what you DON'T see- the "alien", instead you see dripping water, shadows, you HEAR the screams, but what's causing them??? Where is it? Great ensemble cast too and forget the cornbread...
Amazing. Watch it with the lights out and no interruptions. I dare you...
"Ridley Scott's finest hour!", This truly is Ridley Scott's finest hour. Here he makes an absolute masterpiece in the movie industry. He does everything superbly to create a fantastic movie offering richly detailed sets, ominous atmosphere, relentless suspense, fantastic storytelling and great special effects for it's time which still are hard to believe how good they are. This is truly a horror classic in the genre and is still largely popular and recognised today. Alien is as close as you would come to an excellent and polished science fiction/horror. This 2 disc set is great also with with excellent picture quality and a really great commentary track by Ridley Scott.
Sigourney Weaver is phenomenal as Ellen Ripley and delivers an outstanding performance as the lone survivor who takes on the alien. If you have been living in hyberspace and somehow haven't seen this classic yet I suggest that you pick it up immeaditaley for it doesn't disappoint.
"ONE OF THE BEST SCI-FI FILMS EVER MADE", I decided to buy this movie because I've read many reviews saying it was a great sci-fi/horror film and after seeing it, I truly believe it is. I personally did not find it as scary as some claim it to be, but very intense. As for the "director's cut dvd ", it is far more. It includes the 1979 theatrical cut and director's cut both with commentary tracks and a three-part, three-hour making-of documentary. The new restorations are the best I've seen on any film let alone a film from the 70's. I highly recommend it to any Sci-fi fans or fans of movies in general. A modern classic. 9.5/10
"Excellent SciFi/Horror film for its time", I first saw this film in 1979 when it was first released. It scared the crap out of me then. I recently bought this DVD and watched it again. Still very well acted and sets up its sequel, Aliens, very well. The computer technology ("Mother") on the Nostromo is very dated. The movie "2001, A Space Odyssey" had technology that we still haven't been able to duplicate and it was released 11 years earlier.
A note about this DVD release: Dolby Digital sound is not the default, you have to select it under the Languages menu (Dolby Surround 5.1).

"THE Standard for All Sci-Fi Horror Movies", What can I say that 462 reviewers before me haven't already said? This is THE absolute best sci-fi horror film ever made that serves as the standard by which all others are judged. 'Nuff said.
"The Director's Cut do not mean extended,", I remember when I was in still in grade school, my older brother came running into the house bragging that he had just saw the scariest, BLOODIEST movie ever made in history. Well, that movie turn out to be Alien.
I was intrigue by his pronouncement but given the fact it was rated R, I had virtually no chance of catching it in the theater. Well, I finally was able to watch it on video and I was instantly hooked. Through the years I have grown to appreciate and enjoy this movie more and more.
To watch Alien is like going to a gourmet banquet dinner...it is an experience to immerse youself into and to savor every moment. One of the many criticism toward it, mainly from the MTV generation who has grown up with instant gratification for everything was that the movie moved too slow. Well, it is supposed to and deliberately so. The movie's aim is to make you feel the horrorific atmosphere, not to gross you out with decapitations and dismemberment (although it does a pretty good job with the now iconic chestburster scene).
Alien is a mastepiece in the sci-fi horror genre. It took the familiar mad slasher vs. the final girl movie plot archetype to heights no other film since has managed to achieve, much less approach. One of the many comments are how the special effects don't really hold up to todays'. Personally, I think this film looked as if could have been shot yesterday. There is a timeless quality to it that has enable to withstood the test of time.
The horror of Alien is not cheap blood and gore so prevalent in today's movies. In fact, the chestburster scene is so primal and unsettling that it resonates with you for the rest of the movie, so you THINK that blood and gore splashes aplenty every time the alien dispatches another member of the crew. The opening titles with Jerry Goldsmith's haunting score set the tone immediately and this atmosphere of isolating fear and paranoia never lets up.
When the Director's Cut came out in the theaters, I was overjoyed that I was able to experience this movie on the big screen. However, one thing disappointed me with the Director's Cut....the film wasn't really extended....several scenes and quick shots were inserted, but at the expense of having some other scenes (mainly of the camera panning across the set) being cut. There was one interesting shot of Brett looking for the cat and a quick casual shot of the alien hanging above him. I wonder if that scene was left in the original release, would the viewers recognize the alien for what it is, or thought it was a piece of futuristic machinery.
I do have to admit that since after multiple viewings, Alien loses its effectiveness because you know what is going to happen...but I still watch it repeatedly for the performance between the 7 principal actors and the amazingly detailed sets and art direction.
Pity they don't make movies like this anymore.
"Great to see this classic again---with extras!", I've always thought Alien was an absolute classic. Not only because the hero was a woman, but because it broke new ground in science fiction films.
I remember seeing this film in the theater when it first came out. Director Ridley Scott's dark, stark, utilitarian ship was a perfect backdrop for the menacing alien invader. At times, the interior of the ship, with its grooves and ribbing and glistening metal almost resembled the alien itself. As the crew members walked the Nostromo's corridors, the audience was on the edge of its collective seat, wondering if that thing around the corner is the alien or just part of the ship. Another factor that added to the incredible suspense was that that audience never got a really good, complete look at the alien's body. The fabulous performances of the cast, particularly of Sigourney Weaver, are the icing on the cake. I highly recommend this Director's Cut, especially for the footage of Sigourney Weaver's screen test. Fabulous!
"While some effects are dated, the film remains excellent!", Watching Alien last night for the first time in a while, I noticed that there are things that might take away from immersion in the film, just for example my wife mentioned the cheesy music sound-track that seemed like it belonged in a movie even older than Alien (1979) and the computer effects that in 1979 were seemingly state of the art, look a bit hokey by what we are used to today, and of course the film is set in the future.
However where the film continues to succeed, is the realistic way the crew interacts, like a real gender mixed factory work team, and the management and non management crew interactions, even though they are Officer ~ Enlisted, this is a commercial ship and really it came off genuine for me.
The one great thing that I loved about this movie and the next is the anticipatory anxiety it so expertly draws out by making you think something will happen and then it may or may not, just like in life. In this, I think Ridley Scott, really hits the mark and changes the way we (at least I) think about what makes a good scary movie.
Sigourney Weaver is so wonderful as the Heroine Ellen Ripley, that I can't praise her enough; she comes across believable, tough and vulnerable, but ultimately tenacious and able to get the job done. I remember reading before that the alien in this film was a metaphor for how cancer can strike at any time etc. I don't know about all that, but what I do know, is this is a movie that requires only a bit of suspension of disbelief to create a thoroughly frightening movie watching experience.
Highly recommended for anyone who likes a good scare.
""Alien" 1979 ", I am usually not much into Sci-fi fiction or Action oriented movies. When I first came across the movie 'Alien', I didn't have much expectations from the movie at all. I anticipated the movie to be just another cheap sci fi movie, but I was wrong. 'Alien' proved to be a very interesting movie. The best and unique part that makes this sci fi movie different than the other ones is the fact that there is mystery in the air all the time. Excellent performences by John Hurt, Veronica Catwright, Sigourney Weaver and almost every one. This movie will keep you at the edge of your seat and will keep you wondering what will happen next. Also proves, classics are classics afterall.
