An album with Chris Robinson so tight and melodic that would makes you want to jump....priceless.

Black Crowes, a real rock band SHOULD be!!!!!

"Best they ever did"
This is by far the best, most consistent album the Black Crowes ever did. The band plays as if it put down the dope for once and just rocked and played like it's very existence depended upon it. I laughed at the one bad review on this site. It looks as though Marc Ford wrote it himself. Nice try, Marc!

"This is the worst Crowes album. Where's Marc Ford?"
Well, all Crowes fans and even casual music fans should know who Marc Ford is by now. Look into The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion album, Amorica and Three Snakes and One Charm and you will see why this album is such a poor, half-hearted record from one of the best bands of the last decade. This album is missing Ford's fluid guitar playing and ability to hit a note at the right time, or just keep the groove going with rhythm player Rich Robinson. If you already have the first album, Shake Your Moneymaker and you don't have any of the ones mentioned above, do not waste your time with this weak effort. This band's best work stretched from 1992-1997 and it's a shame they threw it all away. Even Chris Robinson's vocals are really suffering. Rich Robinson thinke he can play rhythm and lead parts by himself, thinking no one would notice Marc Ford's legendary thumbprint on the Crowes' legacy. Big mistake Chris and Rich. Apologize to Marc and allow him to contribute to your band!

"Good rock n' roll"
For starters, The Crowes are an amazing rock n' roll band. Their music is more than welcome considering the severe absence of good rock n' roll these days. As far as By Your Side goes, most people's biggest criticism is that it is too polished. My response to this is that it is important to understand that once a band has been together for as long as these guys have, they naturally get tighter. I don't think this should be mistaken for over-production or anything. And, personally I would not prefer a recording to be sloppy simply so I can say without a doubt that I haven't bought some nice, neat, corporate package. I'd rather trust the musicians. The songcraft on this album is great. The melodies are strong and are not a mere regurgitation of anything else. The guitars are superb and well-driven. Additionally, there are alot of classic Crowe-isms, keeping an identifiable element of consistency with their other records. Also, you can listen to this album the whole way through; every song is awesome. This album rocks, pure and simple, and is a must have.

"Still Kickin"
Sometimes I wish Chris would just be quiet and let his brother play longer; that guitar is so southern, so gritty and so sweet. Don't let the nay-sayers on here sway you. "By Your Side" is too delicious to miss, right down to its classic cover.

What our customer's say!

"By Your Side Review", I know I could get punched for saying this, but I like this CD even better than their first one- Shake Your Money Maker (but yes, I love that one also). Being a guitarist, I love the guitar work on By Your Side. The guitar riffs by Rich Robinson are catchy and heavy throughout the CD. Chris sounds fantastic and enthusiastic. There's scarcely a dud on the entire CD. The feel of the CD is very upbeat and optimistic. There are radio-friendly songs such as Kicking My Heart Around, Go Faster and a couple others, but there are also great songs that you'd probably never hear on the radio. Some hot spots for me include Go Tell the Congregation, By Your Side, Then She Said My Name, Virtue & Vice, Heavy. If you like rock & roll, I don't see what you wouldn't like about this CD. Great music for a party or for when you just feel good and want to jam. I think this is their most underrated CD. Buy it.

"Worst Album by the Crowes", I bought this album that day it came out, listened to it twice and put it on my cd rack severely disappointed. Every two years since, I grab the CD thinking, "Hey, it's the Crowes, it can't be -that- bad". And every time, I put it back on the shelf.

It come down to this, if you like the Black Crowes and don't have this album, don't buy it. I read all the press when this came out. The album was supposed to be a return to their early days (ala Shake Your Moneymaker). In my opinion, Moneymaker is good, but not nearly as good as Southern Harmony and Amorica. Although By Your Side has the Shake vibe, it is at best secondhand rehash of that album.

In reading the positive reviews about this album, I have to think the authors aren't normally Crowes fans. This album sounded like a hollow attempt to reclaim radio glory. If you like radio rock, it might be for you. If you think the Crowes are best when they are experimenting and grooving (ala Amorica) stay away from this one.

"Just a great album. One of my favorites.", This is one of the Crowes' best albums, along with SH&MC. It has been a long time since I heard Amorica, so I cannot really compare. It is one of the best albums out there. Listen to some bland nu-metal (e.g., Godsmack, Korn) and you'll hear how refreshing an album such as this is. This is rock n' roll. They've been compared with the Stones and Humble Pie, only I perceive they are an improvement on these bands and have a style unique. Soul is the word. Great soul. Good songs. I like their new effort, Warpaint, but I like the Crowes a bit more rockin,' overall, like in this album. But I love all the Crowes I've heard.

With "By your side" you cannot help but move and groove if you have an ounce of soul left in your body after years of grunge and nu-metal. I love these guys; there is no one else like them today, or any past day.

But if you do like other styles of rock, put this album in sometime. You'll find a very nice, refreshing change.

And THESE GUYS ARE DEFINATELY NOT SELL-OUTS! You can easily tell that they love the music. They are greater than Aerosmith, in my opinion. Much more funk and soul.

"A half-hearted rehash", As with many artists, the Black Crowes album "Shake Your Money Maker" is good, but not their best. Working with a caveman on a rock album doesn't sound like a good idea. Producing an album aint easy, and here's proof. Somewhere along the way the caveman figured a return to their roots was in order. This confuses me, as this band had evolved way beyond what they were doing in the beginning. This comes off as a collection of slightly above average tunes, that try lamely to capture the spirit of the first album. This one seemed to lack it's own vibe, or story. On other Crowes albums, like Amorica or Thre Snakes... they seemed to catch a feeling and really go for a ride. This one doesn't gel, and the really good songs don't stand out until the Live album. I highly recommend the god stuff on here, but only in their live digs. "Welcome to the Good Times" "Go tell the Congregation" & "Horsehead" are very good. "By Your Side" is a very weak attempt at a hit single, which the Crowes didn't really need. With a better producer, I feel the Robinson boys would've come up with more material, and created a better vibe than this sleepy tripe. The closest you'll come to a 'bad' Crowes album(although the jury's still out on 'Warpaint' LOL)...just a bump in the road, as Lions was a VAST improvement on a stale vibe.

"Great guitar work...lazy lyrics", There arent many albums that are more fun than this for turning up the volume and testing your eardrums. But the "youre the girl for me...i hope we stay together forever" lyrics get tired really fast. Not all the songs have connect the dot lyrics. "Virtue and Vice" and "Horsehead" are bonafide Crowe's classics. But what about "Heavy"? Perhaps they were intending to be funny with this, but it doesnt work. With lyrics like "The way you put on your clothes, the way you wiggle your toes, the way you scratch your nose" this song , after the cool guitar riff wears off, becomes a skipper and perhaps the most embarrassing song in the Crowes catalogue. But its forgivable because on their next release, they got back to the tortured soul search for enlightenment type lyrics on Lions and again on Warpaint. I guess one trip down the cheeseball highway in a bands career wont taint their legacy.

"WOW!--no other word describes it.", If something better than CDs are ever invented and we all have to switch over to this new-and-improved, state-of-the-art watchamadoodle, then The Black Crowes' BY YOUR SIDE will be the first watchamadoodle I'll buy. I mean, rock & roll has no right to sound this good--and it certainly isn't fair that so much talent should be confined to one rock & roll group. But it is and here's the proof: a CD containing twelve perfect songs that demand to be played loud and repeatedly. "Go Faster", "Kickin' My Heart Around", "Heavy", "Virtue & Vice"--there's not a dud in the bunch. Not one.

"Great return to form", I absolutely loved this album when it came out. To me it was the most exciting thing we had heard from this great band in over 6 years. After the first two albums, I found "Amorica" too experimental and "Three Snakes And a Charm" a slight improvement but a bit slow in spots. This effort just gets back to basics--both for the Crowes in particular and rock and roll in general.

Sure, there are none of the understated drawn-out, experimental sounds that the music critics who hate melodic rock music like. And that's what's so great about it. I wouldn't want each of their albums to sound just like this, but at the time (a time when grunge was mercifully beginning to die but when boy bands were truly taking over the popular music universe) this release hit the spot. For sure, it still does.

"Kickin' My Heart Around" was the first single released--and I was instantly pumped when I first heard it. A catchy, rocking song with attitude. The title track and "Only A Fool" were other tracks that I heard on the radio--both very endearing anthems with great background vocals. Other standout tracks include the opener "Go Faster", the closer "Virtue and Vice", and "Heavy". Just an amazingly catchy overall effort that is so refreshing to hear in this day and age. I like the Crowes' latest album "Lions" almost as much, as it continues the interesting evolutionary process of this band's music. But for sure, no rock album hit the spot more than this one at the time it came out.

"A Highly Underrated Album", Initially, I wasn't floored by By Your Side. The Black Crowes' catalog (despite what critics might tell you) up to this album had been a steady growing process, culminating in the masterpiece album Three Snakes and One Charm. And when I popped this new disc into the player after nearly three years of anticipation, I immediately saw it as a step backward. It seemed to be a recall to the band's early days, what some mistakenly mislabel as their heyday. But, I soon realized that the step backward wasn't necessarily a bad thing. True, I would have liked to have seen the band carry on with the jangly, jam-heavy material on Three Snakes, but there is no denying that By Your Side has some damn fine songs on it. The standouts are the album's first single, "Kickin' My Heart Around", and its rousing closer, "Virtue and Vice." These two songs are instant classics and I defy anyone to not shake their money maker when they are played. In fact, every song on this album is a winner. And that alone makes it worth picking up. How many other bands can assemble eleven smokin' tracks in one shot? Not many. I guess the thing to do with By Your Side, as with any Black Crowes release, is to listen to it based on its own merits and not shadow it with comparisons to its predecessors.

Also worth noting is the sizeable number of b-sides released with this album's singles. All of them are amazing songs and it's a puzzle as to why they weren't included on the album. Definitely worth seeking out, if you can still find them.<

"It rocks, but it's sterile and soulless.", If you're looking for a good party album to just put on and rock out to, BYS is your CD. However, if you're looking for any substance whatsoever, you're better off with amorica., The Southern Harmony, Three Snakes, or Lions.

This record is Columbia Records' attempt to sell CDs by making the Crowes sound like their popular debut album, Shake Your Money Maker. And it does sound like it, only more sparkly and squeaky-clean, thanks to a classic job of over-production by Kevin "Caveman" Shirley. Don't blame the Crowes' for this one either, folks; they were promised artistic freedom on this one and were denied it, as Shirley pretty much dictated how the album would sound. Chris Robinson has even *apologized* for this CD to his fans.

Don't get me wrong, the album rocks, with several high-energy, make-you-wanna-dance rockers such as "Go Faster" and "Kickin' My Heart Around." However, the music and lyrics are horribly cliched, lacking substance, and just plain boring when it comes to any usage other than background music.

The CD *does* have some high points; "Horsehead" is a wonderfully heavy tune that heavily attracted the attention of Jimmy Page, who called it a "must" to play when he toured with them, and "Virtue and Vice" is an amazing closer, with, for BYS, very poignant lyrics. However, BYS is simply filled with too much fluff.

BYS rocks, but it won't touch your soul like amorica.

"great first half", This album kicks off at a furious pace with some killer songs then degenerates into a yawn-athon from the half way mark. Stick to Sticky Fingers.
