Others say...
"Simply the best" I think this game is simply the best game I've ever played. I think about it, after the fact, all the time. The visuals are gorgeous. The voice acting is superb. The soundtrack is good enough that I actually listen to it by itself! No other game has influenced me so much as this. Do whatever it takes to play this game.
"Masterpiece" Although still a gamer (or at least an interested former gamer), I have been sceptic about games as of late. Almost no game has managed to captivate me at all for the last 5+ years, and that is tragic. But I don't give up on the medium, largely because of this game. Grim Fandango is proof that video game design can be an art, and as video game art, this is a masterpiece.
Of course, Grim Fandango is really only 1 part game, and 5 parts story. If you have played any Graphic Adventure game before, especially one by the fantastic Tim Schafer or his contemporaries Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman, than you should know the gameplay already. If you haven't, then it is going to seem weird, ungame-like, and maybe even boring. What makes this game so great is that it is really a vehicle to drive the story more than anything else. With the fantastic music, graphics (for it's time), voice acting and dialogue (by far the best dialogue in any game before or since), you could be more than entertained watching this as a movie. However, it is more than obvious that an interactive game is the very best way to tell this story, and all the characters, conversations and plot twists are designed to take advantage of your interaction with them.
Replacing the point and click style that dominated the adventure game genre since it replaced the text adventure style, this game uses a new keyboard based interface. It is the same interface (almost) later used in the (dissapointing) fourth Monkey Island game. While it is better used in this game, it still isn't as good as the old mouse system. If there is any complaint to make about this game, it is that.
I recomend this game to anyone. If you haven't played an adventure game before, this may turn you on to the genre... which might actually be misleading, because no other game gets as good as this one. Adventure game lovers would have already played it, chances are, unless they are old fogeys who haven't played it because other new adventure games have been sub-par. If this is you, I understand your frustration. But this game is a beacon of light in the dying genre. It was the game engineered to save it from extinction, and it should have worked. But it didn't, and now it is more like a swan song.
"One of the Greats." Not only is Grim Fandango a really fun computer game, but it's a work of art. I really can't say enough about this game; the art direction is phenomenal, the voice acting is incredible, the soundtrack is superb, it's hilarious and it's genuinely intriguing. Unlike many PC adventure games, Grim Fandango will keep you coming back repeatedly to see all the things you might have missed in previous playings thanks to the huge attention to detail. The puzzle and problem solving aspect isn't terribly challenging or unique, but that's not what makes Grim great, it's the way it plays like a movie, even more so than most games in the genre. Every 'stage' and environment in the game is exciting and relevant to the gameplay so you're almost never walking back and forth pointlessly through the same environment for hours on end. But even if you did it wouldn't be that much of a problem because most of the time you'll find yourself enthralled by the architecture and character design. Anyway, the game is amazing and (in my opinion) the standard (maybe even the high point) for the adventure genre. Hopefully the appreciation and cult following will continue to grow until one day we might get to see more of Manny Calavera.
"One of the best adventure games ever!" This is one of the best if not the best adventure game ever produced! It has the most innovative and creative story line, graphics and puzzles. The characters are funny and even has some depth (which is rare in any video games). The game play is so engaging that I have a hard time turning it off and feel a sense of sadness when the game ended. I hope the maker of this game could continue with their good work.
"Great games" I had problems with it at first - crashing but then i installed the patch that i downloaded and it worked great. The game did remind me a lot of the Monkey Island series. Although monkey Island i'd say had the best music. Grim had ok music. Game was funny and at the end i wanted more- i finished it too fast (i shouldn't have used those cheats). Really recommended, I wish there was a part II.

What our customer's say!
"Still a good game after all these years", This game is still great. The characters, the storyline, and the acting is exactly what I expected it to be coming from the days when LucasArts was GOOD. Overall, still a great game to play for those looking for an adventure game, but wants a good start.
"One of the best!", My son and i played this together when he was still a boy, and it was the most involving and most fun of all the adventure games we played together. And the graphics and small slice of latino life were fabulous, too. Highly recommended for preteens and parents to play together!
"Instant Classic", When I first played this game it was a demo back in 1998, and I was blown away.
I bought this game and played it on my good old Pentium 2 350 MHz and I just loved every minute of it!
I still to this day play it at least twice a year! its a shame that all of the Tim Shaffer games though are very, very, very good don't seem to sell well (Psychonauts is another great game).
"VIVA LA REVOLUTION!", This is the EPITOME of graphic adventures. No other game has even come close to GRIM FANTANGO when it comes to humor (of all shades and shapes), inventiveness, delicious irony, creative graphics and plain good-ol' FUN!!
This is a 10-year old game mind you - yet, it retains its freshness as any true work of art. THIS IS HOW COMPUTER GAMES SHOULD HAVE BEEN - and not the pathetic cookie-cutter products of mega-corporations working in-tandem with GX-card companies...
Your character (hilarious and lovable Manny Calavera) is already...dead when you start. In fact he has been dead for some time, stuck in limbo, trying to pay his way to a better afterlife by selling tickets to other souls on their way to paradise. Guess what: corruption is not limited just to this world. And where there is corruption, there is oppression; and where there is oppression, there is always a revolution brewing...
Realizing he is being duped, Manny reluctantly joins the afterlife underground and takes us in a tour de force of one of the MOST BEAUTIFUL GAME EVER PRODUCED. Immersing noirish atmosphere, detailed art-deco settings, fast Bogartian dialogs - with a subtle ironic frosting.
WARNING: There are known problems with today's faster processors. So, unless you have a really old system running Win98 you will need the WinXP PATCH (otherwise you will not get past the crane scene).
WITH THE HIGHEST RECOMMENDATIONS!!!
"One of a kind game", This is without a doubt one of the best games ever made - adventure or otherwise. It is fun, amusing, original, colorful, and challenging without being annoying. The only games that came close to it may be the Monkey Island series or The Last Express. The game is beautifully designed, with unforgettable characters, amazing landscapes, and reminds me of being inside a really well-written movie. Sadly, LucasArts stopped making games like this, a loss for the world.

"Buenos dias!", I don't go for adventure games, personally. Ninety percent of the time, I prefer shooters. But this one...man, it's so weird, so unique, and so GENIUS through and through, how can you not love it?
Here's the story. Manny Calavera is a low-level salesman trying to earn an honest commission and make a decent day's pay, but it never seems to work out for him. His boss is constantly on his back, he's routinely snaked by a competitor, Domino Hurley, and the right sales never come his way. It's a lousy life to have.
Especially if you're already dead.
That's the twist; Manny, and just about everyone else in the game, is dead. This whole game takes place in the Land of the Dead of Mexican/Aztec folklore, with a strong Art Deco influence, with heavy doses of '30s crime noir thrown in. Everyone in the game is fashioned to look like the sugar skeletons used in Day of the Dead festivals (called 'calaveras'; get it?).
Manny works in the Department of Death, trying to work off his time for his misdeeds when he was alive. He does that by trying to sell 'travel packages' to the recently deceased, so they can make their four-year journey across the Land of the Dead, until they reach the portal leading to the Land of Eternal Rest. The quality of life this person lived determines whether they get to use a car, a luxury liner, or the exclusive No. 9 train, which speeds its passengers there in four minutes, instead of the customary four years.
Unfortunately, the kind of lowlifes who keep coming Manny's way only deserve walking sticks at best, which does absolutely nothing to help Manny work off his time. So, he decides to take matters into his own hands and STEAL the right kind of client.
And that's when he gets in over his head.
The story is pure crime noir with a technicolor twist, like Raymond Chandler meets Tim Burton. The plot Manny uncovers is convoluted, brilliant, deeply twisted, and diabolical like you've never imagined possible. It's also incredibly, unspeakably funny. Tim Schaefer is one absurd individual, make no mistake.
Yes, it's an old game, I know. But the true classics know no age, and this is a classic all right. So take advantage of the price, snap it up, and book a trip with your new favorite travel agent. He's waiting for you...
"Casablanca With an Art Deco Aztec Twist", Grim Fandango has a very retro feel, sort of like Casablanca with an Art Deco Aztec twist. The game centers around Manny Calavera who is attempting to stay honest and make sense out of a Hispanic day of the dead afterlife which has been corrupted by those who control that afterlife for their own gain. All while Manny pursues the love of his afterlife! Confused? Trust me, it will all make sense once you start playing and the dialog and graphics will impress you and keep you hooked. I've tried a lot of the adventure games and they all have their flaws. But Grim Fandango comes as close to perfect as any game ever will. The controls are a little irritating but not as much as some newer games. This is the best adventure game out there and I strongly recommend that you try it.
"Still One Of The Best Games Ever", This is one of those games where you wish you could actually *be* in the game as one of the characters. I still load it up and play it again every few months; and I first played it several years ago. The storyline is one of the best, the voice-acting is perfect, the concept is fresh and original, and the graphics are still quite good even for being several years old. I keep hoping there'll be a sequel or movie made of this game; but I don't know how it could be done and retain the charm this game has. It takes a long time to play, but you never get tired or bored--the story is so engaging and the characters so interesting that you keep wanting to see what's going to happen next. The first time I completed this game, I just sat back silently for a couple of minutes, then said "D**n...this game is going to be a Classic!". Oh, and the music is GREAT. If you want to play a game that will honestly entertain, surprise and delight you, look no further.
And if anyone that worked on this game reads this, KUDOS TO YOU--I hope life entertains and satifies you as much as the joy of experiencing this game brings to me. Thank you.
"wonderful, my favorite game ever", I have played this game again and gain and again. it has an wit and humor about ti that makes you laugh along with wonderful charecters and a diverse and suprising story line. puzzles are moderate in hardness and the whole thing is like a movie. I felt my self saying aww in dissapointment when it was over. (i wanted to keep playing!) I LOVE this game.
"A modern classic... essential for Quest lovers", Such a shame, they just don't make games like this anymore... In what is probably their last classic adventure game, LucasArts returned to the things that made Day Of The Tentacle, Sam & Max and Monkey Island - the games I loved so much as a kid - unforgettable classics. Grim Fandango is a fun game with a good story, hilerious dialogue and extremely lovable characters. The graphics and gameplay are of course modern (though the four year old graphics look outdated in today's standards, it's still great and a perfect look for the game) but the rest of it is completely in the style of these great oldies. The gameplay and interface - strictly keyboard-oriented - may take a few minutes getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, it's just as comfortable as the mouse control of Sam & Max. The game is meant mainly for young adults - the humor is sophisticated, and the puzzles are much more difficult than those in the classic LucasArts adventures (but not so difficult as to become frustrating). If you loved those games when you were younger, then Grim Fandango is a must-have.
