"good chess book for a chess beginner", The book explain clearly, and its pictures make the book more fun to read. My son was 6 year old, 1st grade, when I bought this book for him. He like it.

"Outstanding", Great book. Uses things to interest kids. For example, the alligator story throughout the book is written on a kid level. While teaching chess, get them to read the conversation also. And the use of a "terribly tough test" is great. All questions are worth a point, so it gets them interested if they know they are scoring points. Much like the searching for Bobby Fischer movie. The points get them interested and wanting to do more and better. Also teaches them in a good progression. For instance, rooks and bishops, then queen. Makes sense since a queen is a combo of the two. Also gives great diagrams which they will see later with chess puzzles, such as the ones in chessmaster. I highly recommend. My son is 8. I can see this working for a 7 year old, but 6 and under might be hard.

"Great!!!", I am using this book to teach my two older children (6 and 4) and my wife (who never learned) how to play chess.

It is WELL done at having bite sized lessons followed by exercises. (I add some additional ones of my own.)

I was concerned about the algebraic chess notation lesson with my four year old, but he did great!

The best part about this book is that it isn't just a "here are the rules" book. Last night we went through the lesson on the value of pieces and talking about whether a swap is good or not. Some other really good lessons are the ones showing common checkmates, that talk about what to do when in check, and the chapter on forks, pins, and skewers.

This is a great book, but understand that it is for the absolute beginner. I think it is going MUCH better using this book than if I had tried to teach the kids just by myself.


"Chess for Children", This book is great for teaching beginning children all about playing chess. It uses simple language, and clear explanations, for easy understanding. Cartoon character images help to keep children interested as Kirsty (a pet alligator) teaches George how to play. No prior knowledge of how to play required.

"It is just fine.", I bought this book for my children's school library. I am the chess coach at their school and have been making efforts to increase the library's collection of chess books for children. This book is a fine addition to the collection. As I read through it I thought that my K-2 crew would probably enjoy it more than my 3-5 crew, but so be it. I think learning any activity should include reading about it, in addition to having personal instruction. This book will help those little ones to develop good learning habits and good chess habits as well.

"Ideal first book for ages 5 to 15", Finally! A book that teaches all the basic moves of chess in a clear, simple way, in a hardcover format where the level is consistent all the way. It sounds a reasonable ask and yet so few beginner books achieve it.
Any child will enjoy this well-presented book, and frankly, if you are an adult wanting to learn, wrap the cover in brown paper and read away! When you are learning chess from scratch then simplicity is the key.
On feature I appreciated was how the covers ALL the elementary topics. I have seen some starter books not including things like the en passant capture, or ways that draws can come about. This book proves that these are not too complex for youngesters. If these topics are explained and illustrated with care and clarity, they are well within the grasp of the average 6 year old. My son was so captivated with the chapter on notation that after a few minutes he came rushing in to show us how he could now write a move down!
I'm so pleased that my yongest has taken up chess, as I'm convinced it can help later in life with logical thinking. It even gets him off the computer every now and then!


"Best book in the school chess club library", Our teacher of the chess club at school has two of these books in the library. He loans them to new kids to take home for a while after they join the club, if they don't know the moves and rules already. I really, really like this book as it teaches chess in such a simple way, starting with the moves of each piece and then some other tactics. It took me about one day to reach the section on giving check and escaping from check, and I can already checkmate with a queen on its own.
We do have other chess books at school, but this is my absolute favorite to learn from, as it has fun illustrations too.

"Charming Primer teaches the moves in a clear and easy way", We picked up a copy of Chess for Children at the sales bookstall of the chess summer camp that my eldest son attended. The book was not for him (as he is aged sixteen and reaching advanced level) but it was recommended by the chess teachers at the camp as ideal for my daughter. She is eight, and we thought it might help her to practise learning the moves. We have been hoping to teach her how to play chess for quite a while, and while she has showed interest it has been hard for her to keep remembering everything we show her, and we thought a written guide might assist.
To our surprise the plan worked amazingly well. Our daughter took to the book immediately, and probably remembered more in two hours than from weeks of us trying to show her. We would never have thought a child could learn the moves of chess so quickly, but when you think about it, it is not hard - if the material is clearly presented, which it really is in this book. After half an hour she was already challenging her brother to "mini-chess" games, which the book gives early on to reinforce the moves of the pieces. By the next day she was more or less able to follow chess notation, and keen to write her chess moves down.
Chess for Children is a good sized hardback, with illustrations and superbly clear presentation. We can enthusiastically reaffirm what the chess camp told us - this is the best book for teaching children how to play.

"Why I really love this chess book", This was my first book, which I got to learn how to play chess. I knew nothing about chess before, but now I've read the entire book from start to finish. It is great! Really fun and easy to follow.
I would like to tell others about it, as I think it does a brilliant job teaching the moves of the pieces, the notation, the en passant capture, and the checkmates. There are puzzles to solve and near the end of the book it introduces some opening systems. My favorite bit is the section which teaches about chess notation - writing the moves down - because I was able to learn it in just ten minutes. The writers explain that an old notation called Descriptive used to be used a lot, but these days everybody uses the notation called Algebraic, as it is so simple. This book is in Algebraic of course, and the writers explained the notation so simply, with some chess diagrams and a picture of a chess scoresheet.
Chess for Children is an awesome first book, and although it does not say the recommended ages, I would estimate it would be perfect for anyone aged between five and sixteen.

"Nice Kiddie Book with Nice Picutres but not for an older kid like me", I like the colour in the book, the pictures and illustrations after very nice, indeed!
However, I did not fancy it as a book for someone over 8 years old (I am almost a teen). The reading level is for someone my age, but the design for someone much younger.
Therefore, after our family took off on a vacation and we stayed at Cork Harbour, the car was the best place for it, stuck it in the boot!
