Others say...
"this book had no power, punch or pizazazz" Must have had friends writing previous reviews, because unless you are under the age of 16, this book is quite simplistic. If you've spent anytime on the job with some situational awareness, you will have received the utter basics this book imparts. I wanted to return the book immediately for it should have been listed in the children's book section. It never gets any better-- with any rich information or insight--just obvious trite pabulum laced throughout. This book is insipid and mind-numbingly simplistic. DO NOT BUY if you want to learn how to make a knockout presentation!
"A Knockout!" As a fellow Professional Speaker, I have to admit that I know Diane, and have seen her excellent presenting style first-hand. However, that in no way affects my opinion of her book.
In short, Diane has put together a guide to presentations that every business person should read. Her accessible style, straightforward advice and expertise guarantee that your presentations will improve.
I learnt a lot from reading Diane's book, and I'm sure you will too.
"Comprehensive and balanced book on public speaking" The other reviewers here are right: this is an excellent book, well-written and concise, with coverage of just about every topic relevant to giving presentations.
The book has three main topics: establishing a stage presence; structuring a presentation; and staging the presentation. Each is filled with useful tips. For example, the author includes a checklist for the different types of delivery skills one needs ("extend eye contact," "vary your intonation," etc.). The three chapters on structuring and organizing a talk are first-rate. The author discusses how to prepare for different kinds of audiences, the process of putting together a presentation, and the principles of listener-centered communication. Throughout the writing is clear and to-the-point. And it's written almost as a reference guide so that it's easy to refer back to when you want to review a topic.
One thing I especially liked about the book is that, unlike so many other self-help books, it doesn't have a lot of stories. It doesn't tell you tales of what others have done right or wrong; it just gives you the how-to advice you're looking for.
A highly recommended book for anyone who wants help with presentations.
"Scared of Presentations? This is the one book you need" When I saw the hyped-up title, "Knockout Presentations: How to Deliver Your Message with Power, Punch and Pizzaz," I winced. But I needed to find a book to teach from that really covered a lot of ground, and DiResta carries through on the promise. If you hate hype, you'll love the book. It delivers what the title promises. If you want to buy just one book to give you real help from preparing the presentation, through conquering fear, breathing techniques, using your hands, creating useful and easy-to-manage props and checking the room before you present, this is the one book that will give you all that help and more. To make it even more useful, it's jammed with tips and hints to help you succeed. It is never preachy or pedantic. After each major section, there are checklists to go over to make sure you focus on the most important parts of the previous material. Still more good news: The table of contents and the index are clear and to the point--you can find what you need and concentrate on just what you need help with. Like a website, there are icons for exercises and case studies. Like the best of print books, there are fill-in boxes for those who prefer a workbook to just reading, and margins big enough to take notes in. I use this book to teach, but it's an ideal book for self-study, too. Need to lose your fear of public speaking? Need to give better presentations? Buy, read, re-read, follow this book and you will be on your way to success. --Q
"The best book on Presentation Skills" Diane's book is terrific--easy to read and implement ideas and tips. I find myself going back many times and use it as a resource! I've read many books on this subject--she is number 1!

What our customer's say!
"Where You Want To Go For One-Stop Presentation Skills", I've known Diane DiResta's work for many years. She is the "Queen of Presentations". Her book provides a no-nonsense approach to the art of clear, precise and meaningful communications to audiences large and small. I've taught Presentation Skills courses myself for over 25 years in the corporate world and I refer to her works in almost a "biblical" sense. She knows what she's saying. She's been there, she's done that! Great primer.
"A practical and useful book", Another reviewer said it is not often that a book lives up to its title: especially with words like 'power' and 'pizzaz' as part of the promise. This book certainly did for me. It is not full of jargon. It is not full of pictures and distraction. What it does have it clear ideas, simply given that you can immediately put into practise. The book covers basics like dealing with nerves as well as advanced issues like presenting with an interpreter. This makes it a great choice for all levels of presenter. A great addition to anyone's library for a small dollar purchase.
"General Advices About Public Speech", The book is about how you should prepare to public speech. It talks about how to setup a stage, how to work with a michrophone, how to walk in a stage and the known advices as 'know your audience' and 'rehearse'.
I think this might be good reading if you lack any clue about the process but for people that need to improve their presentation skills it's not worth. Also there's almost nothing on tips for preparing slides (the most common media, I think).
The author keeps giving infinite acronyms where she wants to work on topics (almost all topic groups gets its own) and it's really annoying.
"Great Clarity Brought to Fundamentals", I have read hundreds and hundreds of books on how to give presentations. Diresta adds to the genre through sheer force of simple clarity. She cuts through the clutter and helps people focus on the fundamentals they need to go from a poor to good speaker and from a good to great presenter. This book should be in the library of any serious student of speaking.
"Knockout's a knockout with my clients", Having been in the communication skill business the past 15 years myself, I am glad to have such a good and user-friendly reference as this book to recommend to my clients - from all backgrounds and industries. It covers every area, and then some. I have a shelf full of other presentation skill books, but Knockout Presentations is still the one I reference and pass along. Should be on every business person's desk, in libraries, and in college book stores. Good bang for the buck. Janet FitzGerald, M.S. CCC-SP, Director, FitzCom, Inc.

Read this reviews before You buy..."So You Want To Give A GREAT Presentation? Buy This!", If you've spent way too much time and effort putting together a presentation, felt uncomfortable presenting, and came away disappointed, buy this book now. It'll make you and you presentations better almost immediately. It gives great advice, from projecting your voice to developing a truly persuasive presentation to making the most of your visual aids. It gives actionable tips and techniques to help with each of these items, so you can improve immediately. Best of all, the book is a great reference tool. It's very easy to go back and find the section on Developing a Persuasive Presentation or Knowing Your Audience (or whatever), in just a minute. From there, you can follow the simple steps and make a big difference in the presentation. Just got done developing 2 presentations to our CEO, and this book saved me a TON of planning time, and helped me to really get the point across. He was sold! So, don't hesitate. If you spend way to much time and anxiety worrying about your presentations , this is worth every penny!
"Knockout Presentations", This book will help you put your seminars over the top. It helped address a major flaw in my seminars. I highly recommend this book for anyone serious about seminars.
"Appeals to anyone who will ever speak in public", Knockout Presentations is a how-to book that gives the reader practical advice on becoming an effective public speaker. As the author explains, most people students and top executives are absolutely terrified of giving presentations. However, being a good presenter is now considered a necessity rather than an option. Public speaking skills are especially important since good communication is key to job promotions, raises, more sales and better relationships (to list but a few of the reasons for developing presentation skills). This book is quite interesting as it identifies and dispels strongly held myths about public speaking. One of the biggest myths shattered is the unfounded belief that good speakers are born rather than developed. In addition to providing well written, easy to read content, the author also encourages the reader to make practical use of the learned skills by participating in various exercises presented throughout the book. The interactive setup of the book encourages the reader to take a break from passively reading the contents and to actively participate in the exercises and the surveys. Checklists summarizing what an effective speaker should or should not do are also prove to be a great resource.AudienceA major strength of Knockout Presentations is that it appeals to anyone who will ever speak in public. The audience encompasses the broad range from students to top executives. The clearly written style and exercises will appeal to the less experienced speaker while the conciseness of the book will serve as a great resource for a busy executive. An instructor or a teacher may also want to consider this book as a teaching tool. Content and Format of Knockout Presentations 1. Secrets of Platform Effectiveness 2. Stage Presence: Sizzle or Steak? 3. Fear Fixes: Conquering Nervousness 4. Listening: The Other Side of Speaking 5. Research and Analyze your Audience 6. Building Your Presentation 7. Listener-Centered Communication: Principles of Communication 8. Seeing is Believing: Visual Aids 9. Setting the Stage 10. Q&A, Difficult People, and Deadly Disasters 11. Special Speaking Situations In each section, you can expect to find a number of relevant exercise drills. For example, in the Listener-Centered Communication section, an exercise requires you to list the features of your shoes, the benefit of each feature and then ask the question so what?. If you can learn to persuade someone about the benefits of your shoe, then you can probably be persuasive about any topic. Although, the exercises can be somewhat time consuming, doing some of them can prove to be quiet beneficial in learning the concepts that may be difficult to understand by simply reading about them. Each section is also broken up with entertaining case studies, insightful surveys and helpful checklists. The visual learner will be happy to find the use of informative charts and graphics.Level of DifficultyKnockout Presentations is organized in a clear and easy to follow format. The author communicates directly with the reader in common, everyday language. The reader can simply take in the content of the book without having to exert unnecessary effort. Interesting acronyms are used for a lot of major ideas making it easy to recall the contents of the book and use the ideas in practical terms. For example, DiResta suggests ALARM for handling the Q&A period. That is, the presenter should Anticipate and prepare; Listen; Repeat or rephrase; Answer concisely, and; Move on to the next question. The entire book is organized around three major principles involved in becoming a good speaker. The author refers to these as the YAM formula. That is, to be a good speaker, you must know yourself, know your audience, and know your material. This is a very simple and concise structure that makes it easy to read the book and to learn the main points being highlighted by the author. What I likedThe best thing about this book is the confidence that the reader gains from constantly being told that ANYONE can be an effective public speaker. The reader is constantly reminded that the best speakers are not born that way. If you are willing to put in an effort, there is hope for you in front of any crowd. It is really nice to learn that most people are not phobic about public speaking rather they are simply nervous. When it comes to conquering the nervousness, DiResta explains that what you resist, persists. Although, easier said than done, it is good advice that the only way to overcome your nervousness is to embrace it.The authors expertise and creativity oozes out of this book. One of the best examples is when DiResta wants to show how important listening is for being a good speaker. She does this by challenging the reader to find the secret word in LISTEN. The reader is both amused and impressed to realize the word being sought is SILENT. At that point, it is impossible to miss the message: you must be silent and listen in order to be a good speaker. The author ties in the importance of listening to the next section of the book which emphasis the significance of knowing your audience. The comprehensive content and well-developed writing style makes it difficult to believe that this is DiRestas first book.HR. COMmentaryKnockout Presentations is an excellent book if you want to learn to be an effective public speaker from a great teacher. This is a concise and well-written book that can prove to be an indispensable resource. The motivational value of this book is what sets it apart. Reading this book is like having Diane DiResta, a knowledgeable and respected expert, speak directly to you. .... a small price to pay to have such an experienced communicator mentor you through the nerve-wracking world of public speaking. The only thing that I found to be lacking is the title of the book: Knockout Presentations: How to deliver your message with power, punch and pizzazz. The title seems to be a bit cheesy. Maybe its the word pizzazz. Given how creative the author is in her writing, I am sure that a better title could have been chosen. As the famous saying goes, never judge a book by its title.Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve his or her communication style. The advice provided by the author will be valuable in both professional and personal relationships.About the AuthorDiane DiResta is an international communications coach and speaker who has helped numerous organizations, including AT&T, Chase Manhattan Bank, Grey Advertising, IBM, Reuters, the NBA, and the WNBA. She has also provided media training for sports and entertainment celebrities such as Vanna White, Bob Lanier, and Rolando Blackman. She is a faculty member at New York University and lives in Staten Island, NY.
"Insightful and Helpful", I was on my way to Mexico City on a business trip and I was so glad that I took this book with me. I read it on the plane and found the information extremely helpful to me. I was able to draw from different excerpts of the book to prepare myself better for my own presentations. My business trip was a success and I believe in part that was due to what I learned in Diane DiResta's book. The applications are not foreign and they make sense. I would suggest this book to any business owner.
"Knockout Presentations is the best!", Although I've talked in front of groups for years in a business environment, I needed to restructure my speaking style in order to build my own platform for promoting my newly published book. Knockout Presentations was just what I needed. I found it to be extremely helpful and I refer to it often as my speaking invitations continue to grow.
