"Very unprofesional display"
I read the reviews, I went through the site, I checked around... Seemed like a great book to get a hang of jazz theory...

I have one problem though...I can't read music. And NOWHERE in this whole reviews or description is it mentioned that this book has ONLY MUSICAL NOTATIONS.

I've bought a few books on music and have actually picked up quite a bit through tabs (My instrument happens to be the guitar.)

Now when I get to the returns section it says I have to ship it right back to the US of A... while all incoming packages are shipped by Amazon to a local courier who then delivers it to respective addresses.

What a sham! Overall all those who might be toying with the idea of picking up this book BEWARE. ITS MANDATORY TO KNOW AND UNDERSTAND NOTATIONS.

Otherwise well the money's down the drain... at least for me for now I guess...

"Highly recommended!"
I'm a lifetime guitar player and have recorded and toured with a jazz band for the last five years. I'm long past buying books on improving my playing; not that I think I'm that good I've just not found that many that seemed to be worth the time. Many offer ideas based on some gimmick such as learn only 5 scale patterns and you can be an expert at solos! My experience has taught me that there is no substitute for practice and playing with great musicians! However as my band has matured and we have become more classically jazz oriented there have been many occasions where I need a technical reference on jazz theory and just didn't have access to a good one. A friend of mine who is a professional musician mentioned this book almost in passing and called it "The Bible" on the subject. Well whatever you want to call it its great! The author lays it all out in a very straightforward and logical approach that anyone with an interest in jazz and some basic experience can understand. In addition, it's not just for guitar players. Highly recommended!

"Awesome"
There is not much more that I could say that has not been already written, but I want to do whatever I can to promote Mr. Levine's book. Truely Brilliant. Even non-jazz players will appreciate the huge amount of thought and work that must have gone into the creation of this book.

"Eventually, you do have to ask, "What is jazz?""
Louis Armstrong said, "If you have to ask what jazz is, you'll never know." And while I agree that jazz is something that comes from within, I think eventually, it does require some analysis and thought. In my jazz education (piano), occasionally, like all musicians, I hit a wall where I can't progress very far or very fast. It's then that I like to turn to this book and try to gain some insight. Levine's strength is that he really knows jazz well, so he can call on a vast number of real jazz examples: riffs, tunes, progressions, chord substitutions, whatever, from actual jazz songs by famous jazz musicians. This is an invaluable resource in that respect. The spiral binding allows the reader/musician to put the book right on the music stand, and play right out of it while reading (though I like to read first and go to the piano later). The reason I didn't give this five stars is because I already purchased The Jazz Piano Book and a lot of the material in Jazz Theory overlaps. So, if you are a non-piano jazz musician, I recommend this book, but if you are a pianist, I think you can skip this book and stick with the Jazz Piano Book.

"Not for beginners"
This is an excellent book but not for beginners. I've been playing bass for over 20 years and found useful information right on the first chapters. I had two years of piano lessons and I'm having a tough time trying to play some of the more complex examples. You must be able to read treble clef and play some piano to take advantage of the material. I found this is a University level course, not your "Learn to solo in 24h" kind of book. I had to get a teacher to help me through this book. Definitely recommend.

"Fantastic guide to jazz", Not only is this book filled with essential fundamentals of jazz theory, but the author's approach guides one to discover the ways that these methods developed and interesting ways of thinking about music in general. I've completed all of my theory and ear training at a top level college institution, and I can tell you that I've learnt more about theory in the first 45 pages of this book than 2 years of outdated theory. Conservatories must update their teaching, and jazz theory is the closest that I see to today's music and musical understanding. Buy this book.

"Very simple and informative", I have only begun to focus on theory very recently, I'm 19 years old. This book is very simple to read and doesn't require a massive amount of knowledge of music theory. You have to be able to read music (not tabs), but if you're interested in Jazz you should already know how to. I like it a lot. I have been using the Real Book 5th edition and played some songs off it, but I never realized a lot of very technical things about the songs I have been practicing, and it helped me make more sense out of some those tunes the FIRST day I got it. I hope to keep studying this book and jazz for as long as I can, and I can already tell it's going to take A LOT of time but if you love jazz then it shouldn't be bad at all...

"The Greatist Jazz Theory Book in the World", The Jazz Theory Book is must have for every jazz student and teacher. Everyone can learn something new from this comprehesive guide to playing and listining and loving jazz.

"An essential for any jazz musician!", I've been using a friend's copy of this book for years and finally bought my own copy. This book belongs in the library of any jazz musician, regardless of instrument (I play bassoon, guitar, and piano), experience or playing level. The information is presented in a clear, concise way, and Mark Levine is quick to remind readers that theory is only a set of guidelines, but that you need to know the guidelines before you try to move beyond them. He quotes numerous musical examples, and you will get the greatest benefit from this book if you listen to these selections. It's also a great way to expand your jazz collection. The book is applicable to any instrument and contains examples in both treble and bass clef (Bb, Eb, F, etc. instruments will need to transpose though). No tablature for guitarists, but if you play jazz guitar you really should be able to read music because they give you sheet music in jazz ensembles, not tablature.
It's a great learning tool for any jazz musician, and a great reference tool for the experienced musician or jazz composer/arranger. Buy it!

"Top knotch book!", This is a MUST have for any jazz musician. Now, let me just warn you that if you don't play piano you might not enjoy the book as much considering a lot of the things written in the book by Levine are really being directed towards piano. There are also many jazz piano standard sample pieces that you will find through out the book. That being said though, Levine makes his points more than clear and explains the theory in a way that you will totally understand. If you read carefully and pay attention to what he wrote, you will without question become a better jazz musician. I hope this review has helped you, please feel free to leave comments!

"Excellent", This is the best book of its type that I have come across. It is written in a very accessible style with lots of examples to help you grasp the concepts. It makes apparently esoteric jazz concepts understandable, and complies them in one volume. It provides lots of tips and advice, and the friendly tone of the book is encouraging for the burgeoning musician.

"Overrated & Not for Beginners", I bought this book thinking that it would help me understand jazz theory. It only got me confused and frustrated.

1.There's lots of blah-blah & unnecessary name-dropping. An instructional book should be concise and to-the-point.
2.About a quarter of this book was wasted with a list of artists & tunes. (Publisher's way of bulking up the book)
3.There are too many short pieces of examples with no context. And when are they going to learn that a CD is worth a thousand pages of blah-blah?

Soon after, I found a number of learning materials from USC website. They were so concise, easy to understand & fun to play without pages of useless blabber. Then I found out the author, Bert Ligon, has written several books on jazz theory & improvisation. After studying with Bert Ligon's materials, it was easier for me to skim through Mark Levine's book and pick out the necessary info. But frankly, I'd rather sell this book and stick with Bert Ligon's.

"The Jazz Theory Book review", An excellent comprehensive text by Mr. Levine that details the core of what is needed to begin and progress as an improvisational jazz musician regardless of what instrument you play.

"Jazz Theory ", This book covers it all and leaves no "gray areas".
You can "dip into" it or work through it systematically.
It's of value if you've been playing jazz for 50 years or are new to the art form. Takes the mystique out of chord substitution.
Hghly recommended.

"good but not the only jazz theory book", This book is very good and I recommend it to any serious music student. I learned a lot from it and it gave me plenty of new information and insights. It is also valuable as a reference with excellent indicies and appendices, for example a long list of contrafacts based upon standard song forms. My main criticism of it is that it is very piano-centric. Most examples are given in complex two-handed piano-score format which is great if you can sight read complex piano parts, but are not immediately helpful if piano is your second or third instrument. Also, examples and contexts reflect the author's own personal tastes heavily. There is nothing really wrong with these things, but for a book that seems to present itself as the authoritative text on jazz theory, it's not. I think Bert Ligon's series of books presents a more comprehensive, accessible, and balanced overview of jazz theory, and is more oriented towards musicians in general, not only pianists.
