"Get this with My System"
This along with "MY SYSTEM" make up two of the finest chess books ever written covering positional concepts. Certainly best for the advanced player, you will find these great classics belong in your chess library!

"Another classic by Nimzowitsch"
Not as good as my system but still one of the best ever. This is a good match with my system.

"A Classic"
This along with My System is one of the all time best selling chess books. Writing a review of this book is almost like trying to review the Holy Bible.

Someone gave me an extremely old edition of this book because they knew I enjoyed chess. I not only enjoy playing chess but I also collect chess books. I have many rare and out of print books. As soon as I saw the title I recognized this book as one of the all time classics. The great condition and yellowing pages of this original edition also made me smile. At the time I first read the book I was not rated high enough to fully understand it. If you are not rated at least 1900 then you should be reading a chess tactics puzzle book or something along those lines. Chess is 95% tactics but when you are ready to learn the strategic and positional side of chess then you are ready for this book. I am still not good enough to say I understand everything in this book. If you want an easy to read book then this is not the book. If you want a book with ideas and techniques that are easy to grasp than this is not your book. If you are about to reach Master level (or collect classic chess books) than this is the book for you.

"Will repay close study ten-fold"
This book contains hundreds of examples of extremely difficult positional chess. It is one of the most important chess books. Nimzowitsch is difficult to comprehend, but his vision and his principles can take you to the promised land where you have a sense of really understanding chess. Absorb this book, and your chess will become more interesting and rational. You will have reasons for your moves. This book, and Nimzo's vision of chess, is mostly about pawn play in the final analysis. Pawns ARE the soul of chess, and I have never seen books that really get at the heart of pawn play like Nimzo's. This book contains heavily annoated games by this chess genius. Plus, there are many narrative discussions where he further elucidates the principles of pawn play in chess. Absolutely essential for any serious chess book collection.

"A very good workbook"
Very much the workbook which accompanies the textbook (My System) Gives more example's of Nimzowitsch's theories. Not bad as a collection of Nimzowitsch's games either, though you may wish to supplement this with Keene's book, which also covers the period in time after the publication of these books.

As a standalone book, it is very good. Read after My System, indispensable.

What our customer's say!

"There are better alternatives", This book has discouraged more chess players than any other book. I gave a copy of this book to my brother for Christmas many years ago and he gave up the game. I thought it was just me or an isolated case.

Bob Long who published a chess book review newsletter also holds this view. Most players that I know who have this book, do not go through this book. They have other alternatives. Even fans who strongly encourage going through "My System" have difficulty in recommending this book.

This is not to say that Nimzowitsch is not a great player and theoretician. He certainly was both those things. If you want an alternative, try "Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy" and "Chess Strategy in Action" by John Watson; or "Road to Chess Improvement" by Alex Yermolinsky.

"Synopsis", In Chess Praxis Nimzowitsch elaborates on the strategies first adumbrated in My System with a series of deeply annotated games, demonstrating how his principles operated in practice. This was very much a manifesto for the Hypermodern School of Chess which also numbered Hardinge Simpole authors Richard Reti and S.G. Tartakower amongst its ranks.
Aron Nimzowitsch was a World Championship aspirant, who won the élite tournaments of Dresden 1926 and Carlsbad 1929, ahead of Alekhine, Capablanca, Rubinstein, Euwe, Spielmann, Bogolyubov and many other luminaries of the day. His victims included Emanuel Lasker, Salo Flohr and Frank Marshall, while his theories were the strategic Bibles for generations of grandmasters to come.

"AWESOME CLASSIC for the solid intermediate or advanced player", "Chess Praxis" provides the games applying the ideas covered in Aron Nimzovich's "My System". For starters you should read "My System" (get the 21st Century Edition and avoid the Random House editon, which has certain items changed) where critical theories and ideas are covered.
Then "Chess Praxis" gives you the practical examples in games that were first covered in "My System". These books are meant to go hand in hand.

By no means are these two books for anyone less than a solid intermediate player who already has a basic foundation. Several additional books that will go along with well with "Chess Praxis" and "My System" adding additional games and for study for the intermediate to advanced player are "Unbeatable Chess Lessons", "More Unbeatable Chess Lessons" and "Understanding Chess". They use the "every move analyzed concept, which I find very good. Nimzovich's books may be old, but the concepts he covers will never go out of date!

"An Excellent Book that together with "My System" is a Must Have for any Serious Player",
With lots of examples and careful explanations you will find this book to be an excellent workbook, and learning tool to understand the complex ideas and concepts of positional play and Nimzovich System of play. But be aware it isn't an easy task, you may need to read and study some of the material several times in order to get and master some of the techniques (well at least I needed to do it before I understood some of them).

I also believe that this book is absolutely indispensable in order to understand what Nimzovich sets in his book "My System". Together these two are among the most important books ever published in chess history.

"You may skip My System and purchase Chess Praxis, it is a more important (practical) work.", I am of the heretical belief that one may skip Niemzowitsch's "My System," which is almost universally praised by players of all levels. I of course appreciate its importance in the History of Chess Literature, but I would advise practical players to skip it and get "Chess Praxis: The Praxis of My System" if they want to gain a grasp of Nimzo's ideas.

Why is this? "My System" reads like a rulebook, akin to the USCF Rulebook! Without the examples supplied by "Chess Praxis," it is hard to gain a sense of what Nimzo was trying to convey.

This is not to say that "Chess Praxis" is the easiest book to digest; it certainly isn't. But the examples are well-chosen and well-grouped, enabling comprehension of the key concepts.

Niemzowitsch has a unique and valuable way of treating Centralization, Blockade (well-illustrated by examples!), Overprotection and Prophylaxis (he explains some of his "mysterious" moves!), Alternation (you may need to reread this chapter to pick up techniques of alternation), and his "Odds and Ends."

To become a more complete chessplayer (I am not by any means pretending that I am a complete player!), I feel that players should introduce themselves to important theories that have shaped chess because it will inevitably help in games. If this is true, Aron Niemzowitsch-one of the top players in the world for years, and winner of the great Karlsbad 1929 tournament (his book on this event is very disappointing)-is nothing short of REQUIRED reading.

"Excellent companion to "My System"", My System and Chess Praxis may be the best chess books published every. Nimzovich's ideas in these two books are all demonstrated with at least two games per idea (usually more). Topics he covers include blockade of double pawns, centralization of forces, and freeing moves. Many of the concepts he teaches, which form the basis of "hyper-modern" chess, make grandmaster games and the moves they make more understandable.

If you can completely understand the author's concepts of tactics, you'll obtain a nearly unattackable position and you can start looking for tactical possibilities against your opponent. He may not be the best chess player ever, but his positional play was certainly the most solid. He was excellent at combinations attacking weaknesses in his opponent's position.

Regarding the differences between Chess Praxis and My System: People who read Chess Praxis first are usually left in the dust, so personally I recommend reading My System first. On the other hand, Chess Praxis is lighter and easier to absorb. Regardless, this is one beautiful chess classic you can't ignore.

"Learn the motives for master moves", Chess Praxis has been a best seller for practically the whole 20th century. Nimzo's ideas in My System are put into practice and thoroughly explained via two, three, or even more games per idea. He speaks of centralization of forces, blockade of double pawns and pawn majorities and freeing moves. Just the concept of restraint gives me a clearer picture of why grandmasters make the moves they do. Tactics result in a poor position or from a weakness in your position. If you can grasp Nimzo's concepts of position play, you'll obtain a nearly flawless position which is tactic-proof and you can start looking for tactical possibilities against your opponent. Certainly brilliant tacticians such as Tal have defeated Nimzo. Nimzo wasn't known for his all-out tactical abilities and attacking games, but he avoided many tactical ideas against him through solid positional play in which he could concentrate on looking for combinations towards weaknesses in his opponent's position, and certainly he could do that. "Only when the center is clearly defined can you embark on an attack", quotes Nimzovitch. Easily worth the money, especially with the algebraic notation and many diagrams in the new edition.

"Simply the best chess book ever.", This book was recomended to me by an International Master, and has really improved my game more than any other book I've read on Chess. Nimzowitsche's theories are fascinating, and sophisticated, as well as beautiful.

"Nimzovich Rules!", I suggest you read "My System" first and then proceed to this, otherwise you'll feel like you've caught the flick "mid-reel". Essential reading for those aspiring for mastery.

"Great book!", This book is really a must read. It is a collection of games from Nimzowitsch praxis. The author implements the ideas expressed in his other famous book "My system": the basis of hyper-modern chess. I find this more readable than the former, cause it's "lighter" in some sense.
