"Difficult to Understand"
I read this book when I was a teenager. Since then my understanding of chess has increased immensely. Even though at the time of reading I didn't understand a lot of it, I do notice that now later in life I use a lot of strategies in this book, but not neccessarily from reading this book. I am going to buy a new copy and see if I understand it better. This might not be the best book to get if you are a beginner because it is difficult to comprehend. If you are into buying chess books and want to have a nice collection, then you should get this book. For those who want a book that is easy to understand and will see a marketable return then try "How To Reassess Your Chess". "My System" will make you a better player but it might take more work than other books because of the complexities and early 20th Century language.

"greatness"
this book is greatness. it is agreed by most that this is the best chess book of all time

Nimzowitsch was one of the first hypermodernists (controlling the center without actually putting pieces in the center)but his chess book isnt biased. Nimzowitsch was probably the 3rd best in the world in his time

the wording might be over the head for little kids (it was written in the 30's) but other than that this book is pretty much perfect. it has examples and games and goes over the most important chess principles

You need to re-read it every 200 rating points because there are new things you understand every time you read it.

"Bible of the chess world"
Nimzowitsch was not only a great player, but an excellent analyst as well as an excellent teacher, able to explain things in a simple and clear manner, then follow them up with examples and a handful of games. Another great part about the book is that almost everybody can learn something from it, excluding lower level beginners. I give it a five for completeness, although "The Art of Attack" is another great choice if you want to learn more dynamic play.

"Great Chess Book!"
This is a great chess book and you'll learn much from this well written book. This is one of the chess classics that will be around for awhile. It deserves to be in your library.

"A must for every serious chess player"
A must for every serious chess player. If you seek to understand this game better, this is the book you will surely read over and over again.

What our customer's say!

"Most Important Chess Book Ever Written", I played tournament chess for over 40 years. Nimzovich's MY SYSTEM, in my opinion, is the most important book in all of chess literature. It has no equal. Nimzovich was the first to recognize the importance of the isolated queen pawn, the seventh rank, doubled pawns, and many other chess strategems. Fully understanding the contents of this book is essential to improvement, regardless of the current strength of the player. I have owned this book for 50 years, so won't be ordering a new one from Amazon, however.

"Right book, wrong edition", Most of the reviews here are of the 1991 Hays Publishing edition. (This review may be the only one that is not.) The Hays edition uses the translation (from the German) of a 1930 edition of My System. This book, the Quality Chess edition, is a new translation, is slightly larger, contains many more diagrams, and is of much better design and printing quality. It is an entirely European production. The editors are a Dane and an Scot; the book was printed in Estonia.

I received this book from Amazon yesterday afternoon. Within about two hours, I had run across two typographical errors, on pages 18, and 21 (the second and fifth pages of chapter one), both were in move lines (...dxe4 instead of exd4, and 1.e5 e5). There is a mystery diagram at the end of chapter one with no text explanation. The Hays edition does have a caption to the same diagram with three half-moves illustrating Nimzowitsch's principle that "a center pawn should be taken if this can be done without too much danger". The reader has to supply the next three half moves for himself or herself. The spelling is British: centre for center, fulfil, a rarely used variant of fulfill. I am hoping the errors in the first chapter are anomalies. As other reviewers have said, the chapter is worth skipping, anyway.

While the physical quality of the book is excellent, the careless proofreading make it far too expensive at a 2% discount. (Why bother?) It might be worth having at Amazon's usual 30 to 35% discount.

"Classic way to become a stronger chess player", If you are learning to improve your chess skills, get this book and study it. You will IMPROVE. When I began my chess career, this was one of the few books that allowed me to understand positional play. My ratings shot up tremendously!

"On the book", The book is very good - if You have the basics of chess down, read it! The quality is tacky though - in my a little bit humid room the pages curled up mercilessly - just a little inconvenience

"Too hard for a 10 year old", My son is 10 with a rating about 1300. The chess coach recommended this book for studying at home. My son found the language and the style of the book too difficult, and he gave up rather quickly. He found the companion "Chess Praxis" book easier to follow, and he reads it regularly.
I am sure it's a great book, but I am not sure it is suitable for young kids...

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Should be read by any tournament player", This book establishes the basics of position type play. It is critical for anyone hoping to rise above the D or C class in tournament play. I read it decades ago and purchased a recent copy to give to someone else. The new format is far more attractive and easy to read. This book has been around for many years because it builds the bridge between casual play and tournament play. It teaches you how to get all your pieces to work together and what to think about when obvious tactical threats do not exist.

"It's Like the Classical view of the atom...", Yes. That pretty much sums it up. This book broke the trail for strategic chess writing, and as you can see from other reviews, there are some outright mistakes in it. But, like the classical view of the atom, it's *how* you learn to progress to the more correct, modern view of strategic chess. Sometimes you need to see how wrong an idea is to see how right another idea can be.

This is a good first read for novice/intermediate players on Strategy, then Pachmans' books, then the Watson book, in that order.

"Best Ever", This book really improved my chess skills. I know much more than before.

"Positional Play for the Advanced Player", After you have grasped the materials I have recommended in the CHESS FOR JUNIORS series, HOW TO BEAT YOUR DAD AT CHESS and ART OF ATTACK, then MY SYSTEM is the classic all time work on improving your positional play.
The ideas of taking advantage of Pawn structure and open files is a very strong point in this book.
Highly recommended as a must read for advanced players.

"The Best Book on Positional Play", This is an invaluable book for a serious chess student. I would higly recommend it for improving one's game and understanding chess at a deeper level. By all means, study the brilliant combinations of Tal's and Fischer's games and study all the current chess theory. But if you want to learn the foundations of positional play, this is the book to start with. It's a timeless classic.
