"ASL in two days" My wife works at a doctors office where they have a couple of deaf patients. She has always wanted to learn sign. She couldn't put the book down. After two days she was signing non-stop. Originally she only wanted to buy the DVD instruction but I encouraged her to use this book too. Now it is the other way around. She goes to this book first and uses the DVDs as a backup. I also got her some ASL flash cards that work well for practice.
"good stuff" I only just received this today and immediately opened the book and thumbed through the chapters, I also browsed the introduction and watched the intro on the DVD and reviewed a few other signs. That said I have not had time to get into the meat of it BUT what I have seen so far has been praise-worthy. A very good intro and some good info about different sign language 'languages' I learnt a few things thT I did not previously know (not signs other related info) which was quite interesting. Good explanation on what is conversational sign language and how it differs from say 'signed english language'. The DVD has a visual for the signs from the book (important to know), you are taught by both a deaf and hearing person (mother and daughter)which I also found good.More than 600 signs... Let's face it most people buying this are 'hearing' people who have an interest in communicating with the 'hearing impaired'. From what I have seen this book will help with basic communication and those seeking further vocab now have a base to build on.Also information on common misconceptions, interesting facts and also special tips on improving your signing. I will update the review as I explore the package more. But so far 'two thumbs up' (or 5 stars).
"great book for learning sign language" I am taking sign language classes and they gave us a book. The class didnt like the book that they gave us it didnt help us at all. So we all bought this book and its a great book with a cd and its easy learning.
"ASL book" This was not what I needed. I am sure it would be good for some but I have resource too similar so I sent it back. (Have not seen my account credited yet)
"Love These "Idiot's" Guides" What a fun way to learn more about ASL. My grandson and I are learning together. He's doing it for fun, I'm doing it for work. Very helpful book and much more fun than the dryer versions.

What our customer's say!
"Good starter book", My husband is using this book to begin learning sign language and it is working very well for him as he can converse quickly.
"Sign language instruction book includes a very nicely produced DVD. ", The first part of the book, which provides background and explanation on deafness and deaf culture, is painful, answering questions such as: 'Can deaf people drive?' These are the usual dumb questions that hearing people ask about the deaf. Yes, they drive better than you do, moron, because they don't have a cell phone glued to their ear. However, the author fails to mention the heart-pounding thrill of being a passenger in a car driven by a deaf person who is in the midst of a highly animated signed conversation.
I do highly recommend this book: the sign language explanations, photographs, and illustrations are first-rate, and the companion DVD is an additional positive to make this book highly recommended for someone who needs a casual introduction to deafness and sign language.
"disappointing...", this book is nothing like i thought it would be. i was looking for something that would give me more on conversation style than actual vocabulary words/signs. i got more out of a dictionary than this. it was a complete waste of money, for me. the pictures are decent. they lack variation & real life feel (well, maybe that is the disappointment of the overall book). i do not recommend this book for someone trying to learn another language and not just the subtle niceties.
"Excellent Deaf culture and PSE/CS learning tool!", Having taken 2 semesters of ASL, I must admit that I was disappointed to see a vocabulary list that I knew 95% of...but this book is definitely an excellent source for those with no or very little prior ASL knowledge. NOTE: THIS IS NOT ASL. The book is Pidgin Signed English (now called Contact Signing) which is easier to learn if your first language is English. That is, the grammar of ASL is absent in the presence of English word order. But the way the book is laid out, it's easy to learn! There's little bits of cultural information, how to engage and end a conversation, "do"s and "don't"s, and more! I like the little anecdotes, too.
Pros: Easy to follow, comes with a DVD to reinforce and clarify signs, decent amount of information for a beginner
Cons: NOT ASL (ASL "words" but not the grammar) and not terribly helpful for those with moderate exposure to sign language
Overall, it's a handy cultural tool that helps you learn a little language :)
"USPS review", We have a program in the Las Vegas mail processing center where we find solutions for better communication with all employees. To our hearing impaired employees, we had training held in our facility by a certified interpreter who taught both craft and management employees to finger spell words and phrases. We were going to order another sign language book to be given by our plant manager to those who completed the training sessions as his appreciation to them, but there were those who read the reviews on this "Idiot's" book, hence, this is what I ordered. They use it as a refresher, it's well illustrated and easy. Everybody was happy with the book. For the next training group, I'll be ordering some more of this book.

"great Book!!", This book is very helpful in learning CS, it shows the difference in ASL, ES, and CS. The illustrations are clear and the DVD does help show what the sign would look like being signed at you. This book really helped the hearing person understand some of what is going through the mind of a deaf person. I was thankful for all the history ect. and the little tips to help you communicate better with the deaf world.
"An Idiot's Guide to Sign Language", This is the best book I have found on the topic. The book includes a wonderful DVD illustrating commonly used signs. I am a hearing person who will teach beginning sign to a group which has no knowledge of sign language. I, myself, need the book to prepare myself to teach. I learned sign many years ago, but am really rusty, and this book will help me to catch up. I would heartily recommend the book to anyone who is interested in learning sign language. The group and I will be learning (re-learning) together. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Conversational Sign Language Illustrated (The Complete Idiot's Guide)
"Outstanding Introduction to Signing", This is an amazing book. It is well written and easy to understand. The illustrations are excellent as is the DVD.
Our 5 year old grandson was born profoundly deaf and we need to be able to communicate with him when his cochlear implants are off. He lives in a small Midwest community and has little contact with other deaf people so Contact Sign is appropriate and was recommended by his Deaf Mentor. This book covers all of the basics and helps us understand much about the deaf community.
I have taken several ASL classes so have learned many of the signs, but syntax has been difficult for me to understand. This book resolved that problem and I am anxiously awaiting another book by these authors that will help me learn additional signs.
However, with the knowledge gained from this book, it is fairly easy to add a sign or two to one's vocabulary just by searching the internet--or by asking the expert--my grandson!
"Complete Idiots Guide to Conversational Sign Language", Great Book! Easy to read and understand! DVD makes it even easier to understand how to correctly make each sign. Will buy others by this author!!! Anne SLP
"Great Book", I am very pleased with my book. It is everything I expected and I am able to keep up in my class now thanks to this book. It has sign language and deaf culture as well all in one book. I would definitly recommend this to other class mates.
