Others say...
"How can anyone find this book useful?" If you know how pull-down menus, tabs, and buttons work, and you can figure out all on your own that clicking on the tabs marked "Face", "Hair", "Material", etc. will lead you to the places where you can edit the character's face, hair, and materials/textures, you are far smarter that the person this author had in mind when he wrote this book.
Maybe I can explain best using an example. For each "room" - hair, face, material - he uses a similar structure. In the Material Room chapter, he spends pages 122 to 126 describing what you see when you open the Materials room interface. This is one of MANY lessons on "using the interface", which takes up all of chapter one (45 pages on how the interface works) but is ALSO repeated throughout the book.
In this case, what you see - what he will describe - is the Shader window, which has some pretty obvious stuff: a help button, two pull-down menus labelled Object and Material, and two tabs labelled Simple and Advanced. Then there's some less obvious stuff: a texture map, a variety of controls with names like "diffuse color", "ambient", "reflection" across the top and "add subsurface scattering", "set ambient occlusion", "IBL", etc. down one side.
The author completely ignores all that stuff about ambient occlusion and diffuse color. He spends page after page explaining what the "object list" (a pull-down by which you can select which object is being edited), "material list", etc., and how the "simple" tab and the "advanced" tab offer the user a selection between simplified controls vs. more advanced ones.
Then, when you do finally graduate to a real tutorial, it turns out to be pretty simple stuff. Lesson Two in my above example (the materials room chapter) is how to load and save textures. There are two sidebars on pages 129-130 that summarize the entire process of loading (p. 129) and saving (130). Really they aren't all that advanced: loading involves opening a library and double-clicking, while saving involves pressing the save button. However, he still has to spend an entire lesson on this, because he's got to talk about all the things you'll find along the way - for instance, he mentions in the text (but not the sidebar) that when you press the Save To Library button, you'll get a dialog box allowing you to name your new texture. (Because we all know how overwhelming it is to be confronted with a box demanding that you name something.)
In this - and all - lessons, it's at a VERY basic level.
"not a very good book" To sum it up, this book wasn't much helpful. I'm new to Poser and would like to get started on Poser. The author *plods* through Poser at a snail's pace! I gave it up and am waiting for a better Poser book to come out.
"Reference manual rehash." I bought this book just after buying Poser 6. I am a new user of Poser, and I still found it quite useless. This book is just a rehash of almost exactly what is in the reference manual that comes with the software. In fact I think there are sections where some of the information is practically "verbatim" from the reference manual. That said, it actually covers the material from the reference manual in "less" detail rather than more. :(
This book is largely a waste of money, it's only redeeming qualities are a few "somewhat" useful sidebars that have some specific instructions to 'test' certain functionality out. This is not enough to justify the cost of this book in my mind.
I'm very disappointed, and very surprised there are such "glowing" reviews for this book. I expect these glowing reviews are from people who either: expect way too little, are friends of the author or publishers, are the author or publishers themselves, or are people who are completely uninformed of what a good book is.
The only reason to purchase this book is if you don't have a copy of the reference manual because you downloaded the software or bought it second hand.
P.S. This is the first review I've ever posted on Amazon.com. Typically I don't post my opinion anywhere but I was so disappointed with this book I felt it necessary to inform people so they hopefully don't make the same mistake I did in purchasing it.
"A Must For Beginners and Those With No Poser 5 Experience" This introduciton to Poser 6 is well written and more lucid than the manual that actually ships with the Poser 6 software. I reccomend it for anyone who has never used Poser before and anyone upgrading from Poser 4 with or without ProPack and Poser Artist. The reason I advise the upgraders to read it is that so much has changed in poser since version 4 that it can be confusing. Familiar tools have been moved and those that haven't may not work the same way as it did in prior version. The rendering engine and dialogue has been completely redone, while the material, cloth and hair rooms are complex--especially for those who haen't seen them before. I like this book because it is easy to understand and doesn't predispose that a person has had any 3D experience.
"A basic guide to both artistic and technical concepts" If you regularly surf the image section of the web you'll undoubtedly notice many original creations stemming from the use of the Poser 6 program. Conversely, there are relatively few handbooks on Poser on the market. Kelly L. Murdock remedies this problem with his Poster 5 Revealed: The Official Guide: owners of the Poser 6 program receive a basic guide to both artistic and technical concepts, covering basic introduction through intermediate skills and presenting example projects for posing figures, creating hair styles, and more. Murdock's background in computer graphics and engineering lends to a series of lessons which provides plenty of examples and hands-on applications, with black and white images and screen shots throughout.

What our customer's say!
"An excellent basic instruction manuel", There are some folks who like to piddle around in a program to figure out how it works and have a good foundation for doing so from other programs they've used. But I bought this book on the recommendation of those reviewers who praised the "basic approach" that it takes. I don't have a manual for Poser 6. I don't even have Poser 6. But spending $17.24 for this book and downloading a demo of Poser 6 is far less expensive than buying the full program for $250 and finding out it isn't what I thought it was or it's far more intricate than what I need. Even if I opt to buy Poser 7, the fundamental structure of the program is not likely to change that much. But there is another advantage to this book. Even in programs I've used for years, by reading books which focus on the fundamentals I often find keystrokes, menus or features I had no idea were there. If you already know Poser 6, you might be disappointed. But if you're new to the program and want to know what hoops you'll have to jump through to produce those fabulous looking images you see in ads and high end "show and tell" books, you might consider this book and dowloading the demo from [...]. It will go a long way toward giving you some idea what you're in for.
"Save your money and buy Practical Poser", Just a rehash of the manual. Practical Poser is a MUCH better book that really takes you through the intricacies of Poser 6.
Poser 6 Revealed basically teaches you the same the the tutorial manual does.
"Save your money.", Just read the software documentation and save your money. Hardly any difference.
"Just a repackaging of the manual", If you bought Poser 6 as a download, rather than a retail box with the manual, then "The Official Guide" is a servicable replacement for the user guide. But if you already have the manual, then the only reason to buy this book is if you want a complete description of all the rooms, menus, and settings in a more user-friendly format. "Poser 6 Revealed" reveals very little except what's already in the manual or the help menus. It's complete and it's useful as a quick reference when you want to thumb through pages to find out what a particular dial does, but it contains nothing in the way of tutorials or useful advice on how to create or render Poser figures. This is NOT a book about how to use Poser to create digital art -- it's a book about how to use Poser, period. In its favor, it is better-written and more visually oriented than the manual, but if you're already familiar with Poser, or you learn better by just playing around with settings, then there isn't much reason to own this book.
"I liked it...", Got Poser 6 for a birthday gift and I ordered this book. Sorry to go against all the 1 star customers who were expecting an "Answer all my questions now" book. I think the book is great, it steps you through all the basic moves and shows you how to do things the manuel doesn't. I recommend the book to all who haven't a clue about Poser, but, for those who have worked with it, there is nothing new for you to learn from this book.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"Save your money.", This is just a bad rehash of the Reference Manual that cam in the box set from e-frontier. I think thy got it backwards. Poser 6 revealed in the box and sell the Reference Manual. The only smart part was getting the book from Amazon, best price found on the net for a door stop.
"LIGHTWEIGHT INTRO", I will strike a very objective balance between the other two reviews.
If you were new to Poser and needed a tad more than marketing brochures to help you get an overview, then for $13 dollars, there is enough here to tell you what it is about, maybe a little more than just a features review, but not much. I am not sure what is really "Offical"... that sounds just like infomercial hype, as anyone could have gleaned the information in this book for other sources, but okay lets go with it ,,it's "official", none the less it is a quick read and hones in on the basics. These types of books have value for initial users, so I am not going to slam it,as I think that is the target market. Also there would be enough here to help you decide if this is the kind of software you wanted to spend money on in the under $200 range. Think of it as a marketing brochure on diluted steroids....more than a feature list, but not in depth on any one feature. Adequate broad stroke coverage. Good, clean, concise, and crisp.
Isnt a bad book, isnt a great book... it is what it is.
Now on to the more critical other review from the other reviewer,.... I agree.... "Revealed"....dont project a lot into that, if you are really looking for a "Bible" type, or "Mastering type" or "In Depth Art or Detailed Modeling" techniques and tutorials book then, those would not be "Revealed"..it is a good kick start book and if taken in that context it does an average job. You will learn, what you need to learn more about through Module overview coverage, so-so screen shots, layout, etc.
My one star rating is based on the depth of information to price ratio, that is how I rate books....how much good, high quality information do you get for the investment.
In this case you get a 1 star return on your investment....that would be average, for the money spent. This is the very very least you would expect in this book for $13.
I could see where finicky tech heads, and long time users may feel shorted, and I would agree from that perspective, but if you get into the head of a new user having to start somewhere, it is somewhere to start.
I think also, the author may create for new users a little enthusiasm, since previous releases were so bug ridden, very unpopular, and highly criticized.
Version 6 software has had better reviews, from lessons learned, so for newcomers this is a good chance and overview to see Poser from a fresh perspective, giving it a second chance.
New users get a chance to get a feel for the features, without the bitter aftertaste users had from the previous release, in that context the book has a lot of value.
Most people want Poser to be a successful product, they are initially enthusiatic about the features, this book can rekindle some hope for the newbies.
"great! Every new user should have this book.", As a new user of Poser, I purchased this book to help me get up to speed. It is very well laid out, and is chock full of info for those of us who are just starting out, or, possibly, who are upgrading from Poser 4 or earlier. Although it does not address the "artistic" side of Poser, it will help the artist get to know his or her tools so that one can go on to create exciting artwork. I would heartily recommend this book!
"Good for First Time Users Only", This is essentially the manual that should have shipped with Poser 6.
The Referance Manual was included with the software should have been included as a .pdf on the install disc. The Referance Manual is classic technical writing: "turning the perameter dial changes the perameter value". This book is also basic technical writing but in a "natural language" form. Very helpfull for the user who trying Poser for the very first time since it is fluid and lucid, but of no particular use to some one who has used Poser 5 or probably any previous version of Poser. Features are listed in an organized manner but there is no depth... no discussion of how to use nodes for instance, simply a listing of the various nodes and a nominal listing of thier variable, no attempt to help one understand how to use them effectivly. I should have paid more attention to the fact that the author is very experienced as a popular technical writer and waited for a book from a long-time Poser community member who actualy knows how to get the most from the software.
This is basically a "look, this is you application interface and features..." text. The illustrations are more or less fine but confuse by showing features and variations not germane to the features being illustrated.
I am disapointed I spent my money on it. I was mislead by "master concepts on both a technical and artistic level" since that should read "Be INTRODUCED to program FEATURES" as I failed to find any refernce to either technical or artist aspects of the software. Moreover, "Then go in-depth with the objective of your task as you study examples..." uses the term "in-depth" most liberaly. This book gives an introduction to a feature and then text less than what I have written here as a "lesson".
I would have been better served if this book had been properly labled "For the Novice User".
Perhaps the fault was mine in not understanding the effusive nature of copy writing. Sorry to be the barer of bad news.
