"Very Dissapointing"
One of the few times I wished I could return a book after reading it.

I found no direction or vision about the product. The largest part of the book seemed to be simply going over the menu items one by one and giving a brief description of their function. No Imagination from the author here. The CSS section seemed worthwhile, but again it was a dictionary. The author did not tie the principls into design.

I really felt like the author "phoned" this one in.

"Learning"
The format of the tutorials are not consistant throughout the book, but I have been able to follow them and complete them. I do like the definitions and tips in this book.

"Exemplary content and presentation!"
It's true that the tech editting was a bit below expectations (as mentioned in other reviews), but this is a bleeding edge book and I've come to exect that.

What you get here, however, is not watered-down or rushed content: this book has exhaustive coverage of Expression Web. Cheryl is extremely good at presenting complex material in an easy-to-understand manner.

"Good Practical Guide To Microsoft Expression Web"
Cheryl does not waste any time in getting right to the point in this easy to read book that is well done in thought and layout. (Minus the spelling errors that tend float around)

Cheryl lays out what you need for your web design clearly, how to find what your looking for, clear examples of how to put them together including extra goodies such as using PayPal and then finally putting the entire Web Design together and publishing your Web site.

Cheryl uses a good number of screen shots to show clear examples of exactly what she is showing in her book. I found these to be very useful in going over her well thought out book. She also address legal and usability issues which are often overlooked by many new web designers and shows somes of Cheryls years of experience as a Microsoft MVP coming to excellent use.

Last Cheryl does a excellent job of diving into the world of CSS and beyound and helped me out greatly as much of that was a bit of a mystery world and she makes it seem rather simple with her clear and concise explanation.

I would say this is a "must have" for anyone just getting into Microsoft's Expression Web, good for first time user or someone that has done some web design and is in need of a little brushing up. Cheryl has some great idea's that are easy to follow

"Disappointing product"
Frankly, this is a disappointing product. It does have numerous typos, as other reviewers have noted (confusing a backslash with a "normal" slash on page 126, telling us to double-click an entry on page 117 when a single-click is required, are two typical examples). However, the biggest shortfalls are its lack of explaining the foundations clearly, and its important omissions. The book tends to "explain" by just showing us the underlying code, which only minimally helps us to understand. We are not told how to import an existing Web site, or how to handle frames, just two important topics not dealt with here. Jim Cheshire's "Using Microsoft Expression Web" is far better, both in its clarity of explanations, and in its completeness.

What our customer's say!

"Foundations of Microsoft Expressions Web", Excellent book for both the beginner and expert. Lots of knowledge packed into a small space. GREAT BOOK!!

"Not for beginners", I have used Front Page to build numerous Web sites but found this book incomprehensible, poorly organized and difficult to use. Although it is touted as providing "the basics and beyond", it gets mired in details without providing the context needed to understand them. I hope the next version will start with an overview of what the program can do, how it works, and the ways in which is is like and unlike Front Page, its predecessor. If you're not a designer with a sophisticated understanding of Web design terminology and how sites are constructed, I'd strongly suggest starting elsewhere.

"Don't Bother Buying this Book", I bought this book to help me transition from FP 2003 to Expression web. The book is a big disappointment. She explains everything in code... I want simple explanations, like most people moving from Front page would...She assumes that you will be writing your own code I guess...very sorry that I bought it...The book covers very little and the examples that she wants you to download are ridiculous. I'm not sure who this book will help, definitely not me. If I could give it a "0" star rating I would.

"Technical manual Not A Guide For A Newly Released Program", Overburdened technical manual - not a user-friendly guide for Microsoft's Expression Web that was released to replace Frontpage. Laborious, tedious, and difficult to wade through - if you're looking for a book to actually help you design websites using Expression Web SKIP THIS ONE. If you want something that you can flip through to answer specific questions regarding CSS and other technical questions regarding Expression Web's design and functions then this would probably be it... considering the author is one of the utmost expert's on Expression Web and answers questions on Microsoft's Expression Web help site.

Still waiting on a decent book on developing websites in Microsoft Expression Web - not the technical definitions and aspects of CSS, ASP, etc.

"not for the beginner", If you are using expression web for the first time, this book is overwhelming. Way too many words. Now that I have been using expression web for a couple months, I am able to make use of this book and expand my knowledge base but it is not a book to get you up & running right away.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Beyond Horrible", Absolutely do not waste your money on this book. Now, this lady is supposed to teach you how to design websites with this book. Then when you try to down load the excercises on her website the links don't work, or some of the excercises aren't in the right file. Most of the links are dead and then the contact link doesn't work. And she is supposed to be a professional site designer. Please! This book sucks. This book does nothing but have you reading code which is fine if you want to write code. The purpose of expression web is to cut down on writing html. If you are going to think about buying this book do yourself a favor and just flush your money down the toilet it'll save you a headache. After having to skip chapter 3 and 5 because of non working excercise links and not wanting to waste time "writing" the exercises using the tedious code I gave up and will keep searching for a decent book on expression

"Foundation of Expression Web hits the mark for beginners", This is a fantastic book for anyone looking at creating their own website using Microsoft's latest web design application called Expression Web. Expression Web is setting itself up to rival the biggest players in the web design business (like Dreamweaver) and having this book will bring you up to speed in a short period of time.

The reason I like this book is its not the typical 'this is how you use this application' type of book. This book teaches you the proper way to create a website using current and established technologies. What this means for a beginner is not only to you learn Expression Web but you are also getting a strong foundation on building websites. This is important as you grow and gives you knowledge that can be carried to other design applications.

This is the book that I will be recommending to my clients who want a better understanding of their website's workings and how they can get involved with their design (which I often get requests for as they want to avoid a CMS solution).

"Next edition needs new proof readers!", This book does a good job teaching newbies how to use Expression Web. If you go through the book slowly, following all examples, and doing all the training exercises, you'll learn how to work with Expression Web to build web pages. But what I also encountered with the book was so many typo's and errors, that it was sometimes difficult to know (for example) where there should be a space in a line of code and where there shouldn't or whether I should be using "box" or "border" which made the learning curve longer than it should have been. Since this book teaches a code language (html/xhtml) that must be written JUST SO, I find it difficult to accept that the authors would let so many errors slip by. Shame on their proof readers.

"Excellent", This book is not only helpful in improving my facility in using Expression Web, but it is a great refresher on the basics of how a web site SHOULD be designed. I'm finding nuggets of USEFUL information on every page. I recommend it highly.

"Guide for Using Expression Web with Practical Design Tips", The author starts with the question "Why are you creating a website?" then takes you through the various parts of the planning process for creating a presence on the web whether business or personal.
* What type of site do you want and what information will it contain
* How to choose a domain name
* How to choose a web host

The process is explained in easy to understand terms and is an important first step especially if you are just starting out with your site. Cheryl also gives some simple rules for ALL websites, no matter what type. Don't skip over this chapter.

This chapter also includes step-by-step instructions for the installation of Expression Web with easy to follow instructions and screenshots. The actual program interface is also covered in some depth. Don't skip over this especially if you are new to website design.

Chapter 2 takes you through the process of actually creating a website and pages within the site. Plenty of screenshots and lots of tips on site design such as file and folder naming. I wish I had had some of this information when I first started designing sites! The use of the various menus is thoroughly covered.

Chapter 3 - Configuring Expression Web is one of the most important chapters and should not be skipped. Setting up the program correctly for you will make it easier for you to work. How to configure the various tabs is covered again with screenshots and lessons on css are also covered. There are exercises you can do to help you understand exactly what your choices are creating. If you are just starting to use styles, pay particular attention to this section. Again she has included tips for web design in general.

Chapter 4 covers creating web pages using semantic, structured html. Again step-by-step instructions for creating a well structured page with the required elements, the hows and whys of using lists and tables and the other html elements available.

Chapters 5 and 6 cover cascading style sheets (css) and their use. Here is where you learn the nuts and bolts of the presentation of your site - how it will look to others. More screen shots to show you what your choices might look like. If you are used to using the format tool bar to change the look of fonts and colors and such, this is for you. Using the various Expression Web options to create your styles is covered. Step-by-step instructions with examples and links to files you can use.

If you have been using tables to layout your website, Chapter 7 will take you through the steps of using css to position the elements on your page. Hand holding and walking you through each step of creating a basic layout for a page with no tables that positions elements where they belong.
Chapter 8 continues with making your website unique so that it does not look like a cookie cutter layout. Good general practices for creating a website and specifics for using Expression Web. You will learn about using colors and images to create this unique look and feel to your site from the masthead, to the menu for consistent site navigation.

Chapter 9 covers Dynamic Web Templates, the whys of using them and how to create and manage the regions of the template. You will learn how to apply the template to existing pages and make changes to the template. The instructions are clear with lots of screenshots and examples to walk you through the process.

Chapter 10 covers forms - how to use them, how to create them and how to style them and how to process them.

Chapter 11 concentrates on usability and legal issues involved with your website. How to use the Expression Web reports to fix some of the usability problems.

Chapters 12 and 13 cover using Master Pages and alternative style sheets.
The book is well written with many screenshots of the program and examples to illustrate the lessons. The author knows the program and web design and gives excellent general web design tips along the way as well as teaching you how to use the program. There is a link to a supplemental site with additional information and files you can use to do the various exercises. [...]
