"Listen to the wisdom of great experience" Video production is a complex and expensive process. Barry's book takes the mystery out of the craft and SAVES YOU MONEY by telling you just what you need...and what you don't. I loved his wonderful, meaningful stories and personal shooting experiences mixed within his narrative of the craft and its myriad toys, gadgets and gear, all laid out clearly for the reader's benefit. Those willing to take the plunge into this artform will find this book an indispensable companion. A gifted shooter giving us all the clues we need to tell real and compelling stories of our own, available at a glance...awesome. It's like having a DP angel on your shoulder. You will find other reference books out there, but none are so beautifully laid out, comprehensive or complete as this one. Buy it. Read it. You'll be glad you did.
"A Must Have Item" For a video shooter this is a "must have book". Impaired vision is corrected with appropriate eye glasses, impaired video-knowledge with Video Shooter... Fast shipping, affordable price. Thank you.
"Lots of Real-World Insights" Although I'll never reach the level of shooter that Barry is, this is a great book for learning about the issues a real-world shooter faces. Lots of examples and stories, photos, and musings on equipment. This is probably the best of the many books I have on learning to shoot.
"Excellent intermediate info -- glad I read it as a beginner" I'm a neophyte to videography, and although this book went a tad over my head at times, and was certainly more than I needed as an amateur who wants to make quality videos for personal use, I greatly appreciated the comprehensive introduction to this complex art form. Because of this book, I've jumped into my new hobby with more respect and appreciation for what's involved in a quality production. I did pick up some great tips that even a beginner can use, and probably more useful, I understand the point of hiring a professional. Now that I'm a MUCH more savvy consumer of video services I will know how to judge the quality of their work.
"A book about hardware" The subtitle of this book is Storytelling with DV, HD, and HDV Cameras. What I saw, when I read that, was the word Storytelling. I thought it would be a book about how to tell a story with images and sound to get across a "message". I should have read further along the sentence. This book is not about storytelling. It's about DV, HD, and HDV Cameras and their supporting equipment. The book is aimed at amateur videographers who have aspirations of turning professional and think that professional equipment will make that happen. And who have a 5 or 6 figure bank account. There are equipment recommendations on all sorts of things that make a professional shoot. All of the equipment ranges from slightly expensive to horrifically expensive. Of course this tight focus on the latest equipment means that the book will soon be out of date. If you need some equipment, have a healthy bank account, and want to buy now, this book is a good choice. If you want to learn how to tell a story with video, keep looking.

What our customer's say!
"Not helpful for a non-professional", Wow, I don't understand all the 5 star reviews. I was trying to find a book that would help me shoot better home videos. This is not it. I'm not a beginner as I try to tell stories with my videos. But to me, this book would only be useful to a film student. And even then, I just don't see that much extra value it adds. I'm mad at myself for reading the whole book instead of cutting my losses. But I kept hoping it was going to get better.
"Can't tell his own story", It seems odd that a book with "story telling" in its title is written using the dreaded "string of pearls" writing style. Each chapter is a collection of tiny (1/2 page), jokingly-titled sections that are very loosely related to the chapter---by all means look over the table of contents before you buy. A chapter's sections could be shuffled at random and not alter the level of coherence for that chapter.
Because of their shortness, the sections merely give the user a very small taste of their topic while providing little substance. That's too bad because it appears that the author is very knowledgeable in most aspects of the field; however, he is unable to organize his knowledge and experience in a form that would be most useful to the reader.
This is not a how-to book by any stretch of the imagination nor is it a good reference book. With better organization and some additional depth the author could probably produce a very solid work, but failed to in this effort.
"A great help for a novice.", very good for me, the novice looking to become an 'intermediate' shooter. well done.
"everything and the kitchen sink", I am a screenwriter who took up video. I am the opposite of an equipment fetishist. What I loved about this book was --- I could understand it! Not only that, it reminded me of what and how to achieve those qualities I admire in great films--story, framing, editing, etc. There was no condescension. No talking above my head. The use of humor was terrific. I never thought I'd say this about a technical book, but it was an enjoyable read!
"Not for Consumer Camcorders", The first few pages have many good points for the consumer video shooter, but the bulk of the book is aimed at professionals or very wealthy and very serious amateurs.
The author purports to speak to the amateur and does so in the first 96 pages. The remaining 170 some pages gets into equipment and the author covers only the best professional-level gear. If you don't mind being told that you can't possibly make videos unless you purchase a $5000 camcorder, $3000 in tripods, $8000 in lighting, etc, then you might like the book. If you don't mind being talked down to and you are willing to equip yourself with two truckloads of gear at a cost that is many times the price of your camcorder, then you might like this book.
Try to find a used copy without the CD - it adds nothing that is not in the book.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"From Hobbyist to Documentary Storyteller", Okay so you have a new camcorder, now what? Get this book for starters. If you follow the instruction and wisdom that Barry has stuffed between front and back covers, I guarantee that your video images will stand far apart from the average weekend shooter. Packed full of clear, concise photos to accompany the read you can't go wrong. Although I've taken videography classes, this book serves as a great refresher and reference. Barry also gives you technical advise thats easily digested. There is way too much information in this book for me to pinpoint one particular segment (although I have MY favorites), but if you are a novice to intermediate shooter buy this book like, yesterday! The Five C's of Cinematography: Motion Picture Filming TechniquesGet the book, get your camera, and get focused!
"A great refresher even for the professional shooter", I've been out of college with my degree for 14 years now, and have been working in the video field the last 10 steadily. I was convinced I knew it all and didn't need any advice from anyone, this book proved me wrong.
This book is a great refresher on all the basics, plus many advanced shooting and lighting techniques. It gives everyone a moment to remember all those great things we've forgotten, and kicks you to be a better shooter (or producer, or director) with solid advice and technical jargon demystified so even the layman can digest it.
Barry has seen and done more in the video field than some of us could ever hope to in their lifetimes, and since I picked up a video camera in 1989 (an old VHS Panasonic) I've been learning the craft ever since as well.
A perfect book for reading cover to cover, or jumping from section to section as a reference guide. Great stuff cover to cover, from snoots to camera selection it will help you have the right tools for the job, and avoid buying equipment that is sub-par. Plus a DVD included has many valuable tools for your "contingency case".
Whether you are a pro in the field interviewing Edward Norton or just shooting weddings, this book will help you hone your skills and is invaluable to even the non-pro for making better home movies.

"Braverman packs courses in film and digital video between the covers", Barry Braverman brought me back to the days when the lust object of every aspiring filmnaker was their own Arriflex, Eclair, Beaulieu or Bolex. Braverman pines for those days, in a way, when he writes: "I hate DV [Digital Video]. I hate everything about it . . . Today I'm no longer that special [film] person as almost anyone can afford a decent camera and be a Video Shooter . . . " and he adds "[t]he issue now is who owns the storytelling craft - and that is a much tougher commodity to come by."
And with those opening words Braverman launches into a thorough exploration of both traditional filmmaking and digital video. It's literally a pair of high level courses in a single book and it is exceptionally well done.
Braverman knows film. Braverman knows digital video. Braverman knows the differences between the two. And Braverman knows not only how to tell a story in film or video, but how to write about it.
For anyone contemplating any serious work in video, this book is a must-have. Those aspiring to a career in video absolutely need it. But Braverman's book is equally useful to the serious hobbyist as well.
The book is lavishly illustrated with lots of how-to and "why you shouldn't" pictures. The writing is concise and natural, without any pretense toward preachiness. Braverman is very adept at mixing the very technical with explaining the art of visual storytelling. Lighting, camera selection sound, operation and shooting techniques. He covers it all. (I really do hope that Braverman authors a new edition every year or so just to keep apace of the changes in the technology.)
The man himself is worth the price of admission. Definitely a book anyone with an interest in telling stories through video will want to have.

"Excellent - highly recommend it!", Video Shooter is an excellent instructional guide. Braverman's unprecedented expertise and superior storytelling skills help guide readers through all the key topics and everything you'd need to know for professional video shooting and production. I highly recommend this book!
"BARRY KNOWS WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT", What I like most about Mr. Braverman's book is how it speaks not only to the technical side but more so to the creative side. His insights are geared toward using talent and instinct within the given parameters of the tools and medium. The book was a fun and easy read with a humorous, conversational style and lots of pictures (which makes perfect sense given it's a book involving a visual medium). I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to shoot a story (emphasis on STORY) without getting lost in the wonder of technology yet using that very technology only to free up the story. Hats off to Mr. Braverman for a handy how-to guide to get that story shot and out on screens.
