Others say...
"putting the 'lights' in "lights; camera; action"" This content of this book is consistent with the "DV Expert series" range, which I would say are aimed at the novice who has discovered that 'automatic' settings don't really work in most situations and want to understand why and how to start taking their abilities up to the intermediate level.
There are many books on lighting out there, be it for still photography, stage lighting, etc and they all cover the same basic 3 point lighting principles, however this book builds upon this by showing how certain aspects relate to digital video. It also throws in real world examples of lighting situations likely to be encountered and ways to work with them.
I think this is a great book for anyone with a consumer/prosumer video camera and wants to get to grips with subject lighting.
"Great for the newbie or wanting to go pro" I found this book to be exactly what I needed. I knew a bit about lighting, enough to get by, but I didn't have any real experience so I wasn't sure some of the equipment that was out there aside from what I see on ebay. For anyone looking to learn about how to do lighting for small DV/film productions this is a great book to start. There's some good technical background if you're like the rest of us and have to get by doing camera & lighting yourself...
"Great for DV Shooters!" I found that this book was full of good information. I have been shooting in the DV format for nearly ten years and I definately learned some new tricks. John Jackman brings a great mix of technical and artistic ideas into his approach of lighting. This book is great for the beginner as well as the seasoned veteran. I would have liked to see more on lighting for the moving camera and action, but that's a whole other book.
"A very elementary attempt at Video lighting" I don't usually criticize a book too badly, but this one just isn't cutting it (or the light for that matter)...it's so basic that if you have any knowledge of basic photographic lighting, don't even bother with this one because it's all repetition. I wanted to learn about lighting for subject movement and most of this is people sitting on their duffs (which is about 20% of the time)..you can tell the author photographs mostly sitting subjects - he may as well be a still photographer! And when he talks about onset and offset lighting, he says arrange it until it looks good - nothing is said about broad or short lighting and how it can flatter a thin or round face....He forgot about the most important thing - the subject. I teach a photographic lighting class, and this would not even be close to the book I would recommend. If you really want to learn about lighting, buy the book called: Set Lighting Technician's Handbook for film lighting equipment, Practice and electrical distribution by Harry C. Box. (this is really his name)....Anyhow, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with my expensive copy of Lighting for Video - I may use it for my next subject to sit on to raise their elevation for a photo - that's about all it is good for. Sorry, but horrible attempt at giving good examples of real life lighting situations - MOVEMENT !!
"Excellent detail for the beginner" Lighting for video (or film) is really an artform in itself. Using different combinations of light sources can make your shot look fantastic.............but you really need to know what you're doing. This book teaches you that. It goes into great detail about electricity and how easy it is to overload a circuit and damage equipment, or worse yet, start a fire. Extremely important information to know. I've seen too many people who just plug lights in willy-nilly and when the inevitable disaster strikes just throw the breaker switch and 'give it another go'. This is essential reading for anyone wanting to use lighting for their productions.

What our customer's say!
"Great information!", I got this book out of the library to read as a preparation for doing lighting on a low-budget movie I'm planning. Long story short, I devoured the book, then had to renew it so I could read it again and again.
People with big expensive lights will love the clear use of big expensive lighting equipment.
People who know nothing about lighting (like I did before I got this book) and have no money (like me) will love the low-budget chapter, and specifically the "spit and gaffer's tape" (author's words) list of equipment for those of us without deep pockets.
"Everything You Need To Know, and Interesting Too!", This is an amazing book. The guy is a true pro and explains everything you need to know to get takes that look professional on the first try.
The book is really well written and organized. I blows by while you learn all the hows and whys of lighting video.
I recomend this to anyone who feels that they are not at the professional level with lighting yet. It will change your life.
"Enlightening book", Overall, I think this book is very easy to read. The author starts with the basic elements of lighting and builds on that foundation. I am using it with a lighting for video class that I am enrolled in, but would be very helpful by itself. The pictures really help to guide the process and set up your lighting scenerios properly.
"Just brilliant insight. really easy to read. ", This book changed my perspective of lighting being a beginner and it gave me so much insight and the buzz words to work with the pros... Truly enjoyed it and refer to it often! (NO I am not the author)hehe I just really liked it. It rocks!!
"A Must Purchase for the Filmmaker", Lighting for Digital Video & Television introduces the basics of lighting for film and video in a very concise and lucid manner. The information published here will serve the filmmaker with very little or no budget as well as those with professional budgets. The author presents both relevant theory and practical advice. The single best book I have purchased on the subject of lighting for video.

Read this reviews before You buy..."The Best I've Seen", This book is very detailed but lays things out in a way that does not overwhelm the reader. It takes you through learning most of the proper equipment, electrical terminology and safety, basic lighting techniques, common problems faced on locations, more specialized techniques, etc. An excellent start into the art and science of lighting and probably the best book on the topic I've seen. "Truly Useful From Novice to Advanced", I first became aware of what effect lighting has when I watched a critical review of Casablanca. While the movie was running, at this point the reviewer would point out how lighting accented Ingrid Bergman's cheeks. At that point he would point out how lighting drew your attention to Bergmand and Bogart while dark shadows in the background filled in the image but down played its importance. Over time I began to learn more about lighting as I tried different things (generally photographing industrial equipment). I learned, slowly, that you put a light here to do this, and one over there to do that. I bought a few books on the subject, but I never tied it together. Now here in one volume is the whole story. From types of lights, to where shadows should fall on a models face, from patterns in the room background to doing highlights where and how you want them. The back cover of the book says it's User Level is from Novice to Advanced. That's right. I think everyone will get something useful out of this book. "More than just a lighting book", I bought this book to help me to set up lighting for Digital Video for instructional work. I gained full understanding about lighting without suffering through attempts of an author to fulfill a writers self image. Read easily and quickly. It is a great information book. Also, he list contact information for equipment vendors. "Too good to be true", I'm not really good at writing reviews, but I love this book so much that I have to say something. First of all, let me say that this book is for everyone who is interested in lighting. It doesn't matter if you're a photographer or cameraman, you'll learn from reading this book. John Jackman is a real expert and is passing along his knowledge in this book. Personally, I'm a digital photographer and videographer that has been perplexed by the whole lighting thing for years. I'm no pro if you're wondering. This is the third book that I've bought about lighting and the prior two books really didn't teach me anything at all (see my very bad review of the Lighting Cookbook). The authors of the other books are just spoon feeding you tips and diagrams without explaining the logic behind them. It's as if they don't want you to learn anything. Well, John Jackman doesn't just give you a fish, he teaches you to fish and once you finish this book you'll have enough knowledge of lighting to do just about anything and actually understand what you're doing and why. I received this book in the mail about four days ago and already finished. I just couldn't stop reading it. Once I read the first few pages, I knew that I had bought the right book and I felt like I was actually learning something the whole time. I'm a digital photographer and if you shoot digital with a prosumer camera, you should know that you can't use the same equipment that they use at your local studio. It's just not very compatible. So, I have to use continuous lighting like they do for video and film making. It has many advantages and is every bit as good. I do video too, so the lighting equipment can be used for both. Anyway, I've got this huge lighting catalog from B&H photo and it's got pretty much any kind of light and accessory that you could want. The only problem is that it doesn't explain what they are and how to use it. This book explains all of this and that's actually why I bought it in the first place. If it wasn't for the "look inside" feature here at amazon.com, I wouldn't have been able to tell what the book covered. So, after seeing the table of contents I bought it. Now when I flip through the catalog, I know what I'm looking at and what it does. Instead of just blindly buying something, I know exactly what I need for my purposes. Unlike other books that claim to give you low to no budget solutions, this book actually has quite a few. Although much of the equipment mentioned is very expensive. Another one of my favorite things about this book is the glossary with plain language that's easy to read. Almost every term that I didn't know could be found in the back with a simple explanation. My only complaint and it's really a non-complaint is the excruciatingly boring detail the author would go into when explaining the way our eyes work and some other things. I know that it is relevant and useful information and he means well, but I almost fell asleep through that part. The studio lighting chapter is pretty boring too unless you're going to be a gaffer for CNN. It shouldn't be skipped, but maybe skimmed through. All in all, I knew this book would be good, but it exceeded my expectations. When they say "expert series" they mean it because this guy knows it all and doesn't mind making an expert out of you either. The great thing about this book is that it assumes that you don't really know anything like a "for dummies" book, but it's not insulting to your intelligence. The author doesn't try to keep you interested by telling stupid jokes or using childish examples. He isn't so full of himself that the book is about him or his work. The book is about lighting and he takes you from the very basics to the advanced Hollywood style lighting. I'm sorry if this review was annoyingly over-positive, but I'm just very happy with it and I highly recommend it. I also recommend getting a lighting catelog from B&H Photo or some other place so you can see photos of all the lights and tools that are mentioned.
"Excellent easy to read book...", I been using lights for a couple of years now but really did not have much of a clue until I read this book. I felt the scales drop off of my eyes as I read though the book. It's a very easy read as well.
