"Comparable to C.S. Lewis"
I read this book as part of an assigned reading for a college class. He writes in a style somewhat similar to that of C.S. Lewis. I found it very difficult to get into the first 6 chapters. I think it is more because I don't like all the detail, and would rather get straight to the point. The remaining 7 chapters however were very insightful. Willard has a tendency to repeat himself, however, it is because he is trying to drive his points home.

"Renovation of the Heart"
This is a truly great book, one which I cannot recommend highly enough to all Christian readers. Much of what I've seen about spiritual formation seems to be fluff, with little content. This book is definitely not in that category.

One reviewer here at Amazon said it was too academic and difficult to read. Chapter 11, "Transforming the Soul", is much more philosophical than the others, and I agree that this particular chapter is difficult; one must remember that Willard is a philosophy professor. However, the rest of the book is not, in my opinion, overly academic; it is simply intelligently written and very dense with information (i.e., lacking that previously mentioned "fluff"). His two chapters (6 & 7) on "Transforming the Mind" are absolutely outstanding, even life changing. I expect to go back to those chapters again and again for years.

If you are looking for an intelligent, well written explanation of spiritual formation, a "how to" as well as a "why", this is a truly great book.

"It's a hard read"
This is an in depth analytical look at the human personality and what drives it. Ancient wisdom really, mind, body and spirit. Willard breaks the human persona into 6 elements (I prefer the trinity version), then breaks into an exhaustive proof of how true change must start with the heart. Some really profound points and observations are made. Worthwhile, but arduous. A simpler and easy to read encapsulation of the same idea can be found in a small book by E.G. White called "Steps to Christ" - that's a piece of work, and so easy to read and understand.

"So far, so good"
After the awesome Divine Conspiracy I had to check out another Dallas Willard book about Christ. This one is also very good and insightful, and makes me think differently about spiritual things. The kingdom of the heavens is here and now, and because of our faith in Christ we are citizens with Him there now and forever.

"Our hearts need fixing"
Willard delves into the psychological and spiritual reason that our lives don't work the way they stand on their own. Our hearts need fixing. We desire all the wrong things, think about the wrong things, and pursue the wrong things. This book is more scriptural-help than self-help, considering its premise that when we try to fix things on our own, we only screw things up.

What our customer's say!

"A man who walks the talk", Renovation of the Heart has become one of my most favorite books. I have begun to read it for a third time and each time I am getting more out of it. It is quite understandable, however it must be digested slowly since Willard makes every sentence count. I recommend the video curriculum based on Renovation of the Heart produced by LifeSprings. Willard provides short introductions to each of the thirteen chapters followed by an unrehearsed discussion of the content by John Ortberg, Larry Crabb and Dallas. The leader's manual that accompanies the video series is one of the best educational tools for the church available today.

What I appreciate most about Dallas Willard is that he writes about spiritual formation from personal life experience. He is a modern day example of someone who has fully embraced Christ's yoke and has truly learned from the Master. Willard has spent a lifetime in a profound apprenticeship with Christ. Not only has he learned much, he has also been transformed from what he has learned. Furthermore, he makes a convincing case to his readers that they too can be transformed into in Christ-likeness...in this world. Then he goes on to demonstrate how that transformation can take place, beginning with our hearts and progressively extending to our minds, feelings, bodies, social relationships and souls.

"Soul Changing", I have read many books that have helped me in my walk with God but, outside of the Bible, only this one has made me who I am. Dallas Willard presents, not only a vision for escaping our worldly selves, but also a clear path to achieve Christ-likeness. If the promises of peace and joy you read about in the Bible have eluded you, and if you have dreamed of living a well-ordered life in which the good you want to do you actually do consistently - this is the book for you. It is challenging, insightful, and biblical. But most of all it is practical. Read and apply the teachings in this book and you WILL see your life change for the better through the grace and for the glory of God.

"Great book! Very deep!", I have not yet finished the book, but of what I have read so far, I am very impressed. Willard does a great job of identifying characteristics that describe both a person away from Christ, as well as a devoted follower of Christ. By identifying these characteristics, he is then able to prescribe the appropriate action and direction that is needed for the former to become the latter. It is typical in our society to feel content wherever we are at spiritually, despite the fact that immature behavior and attitudes are present. We need to be challenged by Scripture and its proper interpretation into becoming more like Christ, not because it improves or benefits us, but because we represent Jesus and His glory in this world. I believe this book takes a great step in that direction.

"Am I the only one who disagrees with Dallas Willard?", I have a really hard time swallowing any of this book. The first chapter seems to be an attempt to interject large and cumbersome words to have you submit to Willard's "far superior mind".

Really! He spends the whole first chapter taking scripture out of context and rambling about what is sin and never actually saying it.

I went to bible college. I took bible study. I took survey of old and new testament. I read and loved C.S. Lewis. But this book is horrible! And I'm shocked that I am the only one who thinks as much!

"A Transformational Book", This book hugely impacted my life. It is more accessible than the author's "Divine Conspiracy", which is very rich but dense reading until you get to the closing chapters of the book. "Transformation of the Heart", on the other hand, gets right down to business and challenges you from the starting mark. I dare you to read this book. Then go and persevere through "Divine Conspiracy".

I cannot emphasize enough how profound and yet accessible this book is. Willard is incisive in his critique of American Christianity and what it will take to really transform hearts into Christlikeness. Truly a book of grace.

"Amazing", Of all of Willard's books, this one was my favorite.

Willard offers a systematic study of the nature of being, and then proposes a pragmatic approach to setting the hear back on course to purity and submission to God. A human being, he says (p. 30), is composed of thought, feeling, choice, body, social context and soul. He states plainly (p. 41), "It is the central point of this book that spiritual transformation only happens as each essential dimension of the human being is transformed to Christlikeness under the direction of a regenerate will interacting with the constant overtures of grace from God. Such transformation is not the result of mere human effort and cannot be accomplished by putting pressure on the will (heart/spirit) alone."

Fundamental to this project is first dying to self, taking up the cross, and living in self-denial (chapter 4). We must then go through a process like learning a new language. The general steps he summarizes in the acronym VIM: vision, intention, means (p. 85). These are a vision for kingdom life, the will to do it, and the means to carry it out.

The rest of the book is structured around a look at the transformation of the mind (chapters 6-7), will (8), body (9), social context (10), and the soul (11). The work of the mind involves being cognizant of the ideas and feelings that drive our society and our personal lives. Instead we should be renewed with love, joy, and peace in the inner life. The work of the will involves surrendering our will to God's, and then moving from abandonment to contentment. Here the spiritual disciplines bring to light our duplicity on these matters. The work of the body means realizing the over-emphasis we place on it and the need to cease idolizing and misusing our bodies. The work of our social context involves noting the use of assault and withdrawal that characterizes our relationships (p. 181). Lastly, the work of the soul, which Willard defines as the unifying factor of them all, is best summarized in Psalm 1. We are to be renewed into new beings who happily fulfill the law of God.

Again, I said this was my favorite of Willard's works. I'm not sure any of the rest of them so thoroughly transcend from the theological to the practical without missing a step. The systematic study of human nature is all-inclusive. He lays out a blueprint of a kingdom vision of what the human being (emphasis on being) is. The very nature of humanity, from the state in which we find it to the place it is supposed to be, is spelled out here. The enormity of the work is amazing for such a readable text.

"renovation", willard's work is unique from other treatments of spiritual formation in that it examines "why" more than it does "how". you will read this book and understand not only what God-honoring change needs to happen but what it is you are putting your spirit and mind and body through and how that will bolster the change you are attempting, by God's grace.

"One Step Farther", This book is excellent and full of very practical information to take your relationship with God to the next step. If you have gotten in a rut or are feeling that there has got to be more then this book is for you.

"brilliant", i've read many books and willard is flat out one of our best thinker's who mixes humility, insight, and practical know-how. he's heady as usual but much more readable than the divine conspiracy. the chapter on hell is probably the best explanation of lostness and hell that I've ever read. And his exposition on spiritual formation fills in the missing pieces from something like Foster's book on spiritual disciplines. it's less a how-to as it is a why and how.

"Spiritual challenge", One of the most challenging confrontations to rethink what it means for Christians to "put on the mind of Christ" and make life changes from the inside out.
