"WOW, AM I SURPISED", I guess I would just like to comment a bit about the comments in the reviews.

I bought this book after waiting forever for its release. I was not disappointed. I believe their patterns to be a step up from many of the same-old same-old patterns that are out there. I agree that the book may not be written with the beginner in mind, but to me just looking at the cover quilt would be a BIG indicator that these patterns may not be geared toward beginners.

Paper foundation piecing is very similar regardless of who does it, maybe a few little different tips on how to proceed (such as needle size, paper removal, etc.), but for the most part the whole process is to SEW ON THE LINE to create an accurate method of completing a quilt block or section of a block.

I would recommend this book to anyone who would like a breath of fresh air in the quilting world. The patterns in this book are well worth the price of the book. The CD rom templates print like magic and are very accurate. As an avid paper piecer, I do not need the repetition of how to paper piece every time I buy a book. What a waste of trees.

"I LOVE this book !!!!", I absolutely love this book. I am so, so HAPPY that I did not read any of these negative reviews BEFORE I bought this book as I may not have purchased it. The ones who say the pattern for the quilt on the cover is not included are WRONG (it's on the CD and called Napa Valley), and they should apologize to the authors ! It's VERY irresponsible to put up a review that will affect sales when it's wrong! Unbelieveable! This book is wonderful with lots of patterns (11 for quilts) along with patterns for non-quilts such as placemats, table runner, and pillow case. There are also 8 bonus blocks. I am so thrilled with this book and CD because there are so many variations on the spikes and you can even print out just parts of patterns if you want and put them together in a completely different manner just by using a little imagination and you'll end up with a quilt that wasn't even in the book! This is a fun book, easy to use, and the CD with the printable patterns is awesome ! Any skill level can use this book & CD and make stunningly beautiful quilts. Thanks to the authors and keep up the good work !

"Cover Pattern is on the CD", I almost sent this book back because of the other reviews that stated the cover pattern wasn't on the CD. It's there in it's own little PDF file called Napa Valley.

I'm usually a visual learner - with this book even though the pictures are great, I had to actually read the directions to understand what I was seeing. I appreciate the fact that they included both as I've not seen this technique before.

"For those who want perfect piecing", Excellent book for those interested in "New York Beauty" type blocks. The cd includes exact-sized, paper piecing patterns for 6-8 quilts. (Normally paper piecing patterns for one quilt equal the price of this book.) The cd is EXTREMELY easy to use, just click on the picture of the quilt or block and you're done. They print out beautifully on your printer and off to the sewing machine you go. The book provides all the necessary info for fabric yardage, cutting and assembly plus helpful hints to ease cutting and assembly. Book also includes gallery of other quilts by author. Probably not a good choice for a beginning quilter due to the curved piecing required for new york beauty blocks.

"Disappointed", I also bought this book because of the quilt on the cover of the book and feel the publishers were dishonest by not including the pattern for the quilt. I wrote to the publisher and they did send me a bonus CD but the pattern pieces are not the actual size as they are on the CD that is included with the book. The bonus CD does not say how much to enlarge the pieces.

"Picture on front is misleading", I bought this book to make the quilt on the front and index page of this book and the pattern is not included in the book. Very misleading.

"The wonders of paper piecing", With paper piecing you are able to create blocks and quilts you never imagined possible....with this book you will make those type of quilts happen for real.

"nice book, but not what i hoped for", i ordered this book based on the cover photo and the subtitle, 'perfect paper piecing.' i expected techniques for using, creating, or adapting patterns for paper foundation piecing--how to determine the order of piecing when creating your own foundations, what changes to make in traditional blocks, if any, for foundation piecing, that sort of thing.

instead, this is a book of quilt patterns designed by the authors that are paper pieced. there is a short introductory section on the authors' method of paper piecing, along with very brief suggestions about color, threads and quilting. no quilting patterns are included. although the paper piecers i know or i have read recommend smaller needles for piercing the paper, the authors of this book list larger needles in the one paragraph that mentions them. their instructions for removing the foundations seem to suggest doing so before fully assembling the quilt top, another departure from most of what i have read or been told. they do not suggest removing paper from one side of a seam to cut down on layers, or dampening the paper for easier removal.

the patterns are contemporary, lively, and mostly attractive. there are a couple of patterns i would consider making, so i will probably keep the book, though i am still debating that. the quilts i really like, however, are in the gallery section and i haven't checked the cd-rom to see if the patterns for those quilts are included because the cd is in a sealed envelope that would have to be removed for use and i doubt amazon would refund the purchase price if i opened the envelope.

at least one of the projects shows a lack of precision in matching points and seams that is surprising in a paper pieced design--one of the purposes of paper piecing is precision in matching points.

i would not recommend this book to someone who has not already done foundation piecing, since it contains a limited amount of advice. i would recommend any of carol doak's books on paper piecing, since they address the technique more thoroughly.

this is a book to buy if you want to make the authors' quilts. it is not an instruction or reference book.

"Spikey Quilts Extraordinaire!", This book and accompanying CD-Rom need to have a Black Box warning that says:

"WARNING! Spikes are addictive. View and use at your own risk!"

Deb Karasik and Janet Mednick have collaborated to create a collection of gorgeous quilts containing curves, and spikes, and all manner of things! Best of all, these quilts (now known as Spikey Quilts) are something that can be done by quilters everywhere, because they are paper pieced.

The instructions in the book are clear, the illustrative pictures are great, the patterns are on the CD-Rom for ease of use, and the pictures of the quilts will take your breath away.......... and then inspire you to create Spike Quilts of your own!
