Others say..."VB 6.0 Programmers Guide not for programmers"If you are a programmer and looking for a good guide and/or reference, do not buy this book! The examples are few and not very good. The book does not go beyond VB in explainations, or lead you to additional reference material. Don't waste your money. "Good, but not the best"I learned how to program about a year before I bought this book. I bought this book because I just couldn't remember all the little specifics of some codes. After I got it home and started trying to use it, I realized I also needed the Microsoft Visual Basic Reference Library. At the end of every section in this book, it says, 'For more information on....look at the....section in the reference library.' I kind of wish I had looked through the book some more before I bought it some I would know that, but I didn't. This book is still helpful when I'm just trying to do a little something, but I found that I use the reference library more and more. "Excellent reference"This is a great book, but I am afraid it will be bashed upon by people buying it and expecting to learn how to program just by reading it. This book is not a learning guide, it is a reference. And a good one too! Everything you ever wanted to know about VB programming is covered. It's only (and in my opinion minor) ceveat is the lack of material on COM/ActiveX programming. This is just a minor ceveat, as COM is a huge topic, which can fill three like-sized books (this book is 950 pages). All in all, a handy reference for every-day programming.
"This is the original owner's manual for VB" This poor book always is getting slammed by someone somewhere. Why, I don't know. It is not the greatest book in the world on Visual Basic programming nor does it try to be. It is a reference work for the user of the language. In some cases it does a wonderful job of teaching the basics of VB programming. I don't think it would be my first choice as a beginning book if you have never programmed in any language before; however, if you have been programming with other languages this is a great intro to VB. There are times when it starts to get a bit dry and sometimes it does leave one going "and the point is?", but in general I find this to be a well designed and well spoken text on the language. One can find it bundled with VB and "VB Step by Step" from Microsoft and after reading both books goodness knows how many times, I think the Programmer's Guide in many ways is superior to "Step by Step". A must read for anyone who considers themselves a VB programmer, this is not the best intro for a novice, but is a great primer for an experienced programmer or one who has some experience with Visual Basic and is ready to go beyond the basics laid out in an intro book.
"Quick, short, and informative" I've sifted through just about all the Interdev books(including everything from Wrox to VI Unleashed and Learn VI In 24Hours). All of them are excessively lengthy, using too many words to explain extremely simple concepts (VI, after all, is not too difficult of a program to use). This book is extremely concise and delivers a multitude of topics in <500 pages (vs 800+ for others)...It goes through the basics as well as some advanced topics, and all the information is easy to find and time saving. You don't waste time reading about the author's programming philosophy, history, and all the useless fluff that comes with big thick books. I highly recommend it as a starting point before you go through any other VI book. Save yourself time and money and just order this book if you want to learn Interdev.

What our customer's say!"As advertised", I had my reservations when buying from a seller different from amazon.com. Surprisingly, I found that this seller said "Book is new and has never been opened" and it was true! A+ for these guys. Will buy to them again. "The only VB6 book I need.", For 90% of the VB questions that I have I can find the answer in this book. It is a great programmers reference. Of course it is just about the Visual Basic language itself and really doesn't delve to far into using VB to program databases or anything like that. Just a good solid reference to the basics of the core language itself. "Not for Newbies", If your a newbie to Visual Basic do not buy this book! This book in geared towards the intermediate to advanced programmer I have been using VB for several years and take it from me, don't buy it. Even for the intermediate programmers this book makes numerous references to the Library Reference, If your serious on vb then get it too otherwise don't bother, try a website. "Good step-by-step book", This is a good step-by-step book for learning Visual Basic 6.0 Professional Edition. There are some minor mistakes in this book but overall it is a very good book. If you follow along, you should not have a lot of problems. Please note, this book is geared toward the "Professional Edition", you will need to have a strong understanding of the features of "Enterprise Edition" in order to pass the certification exams. Subjects such as the Visual Component Manager, Visual SourceSafe, MTS/COM+ are not covered or bearly covered. You will need other books in order to get a more thorough knowledge of these subjects. Visual Basic Professional Edition and/or Visual Studio Professional Edition are excellent for SOHO (Small office, home office). I have Visual Studio 6.0 Professional Edition installed on my home PC and I use this book to solve some of the issues that arrises. "Good Book, but Not Complete", I started doing VB back on Win 3.1 and had lost touch with it after severals years. I had to begin to relearn the new improved versions of VB now for a summer job i had received. I picked up this book, and for the most part the information was very good. However the main problem i have with this book, is that if you are ever looking for more indepth information into it, the book refers you to "the Language Reference" or one of the other reference library books. I understand that you cannot have all the info in this book, but being refered to another MS book just bugged me. I mean the knowledge being online, they could have given the exact URL to find the info, instead of trying to get you to buy a 70dollar reference manual. THe information in this book is more of an overview of all the different components, and have helped me out of a lot of binds over the time. This book is not for someone new to VB or to programming in general, there are plenty of books and online refs for those. I have since bought the reference library, and without that as an accompanment to this book, it would have been very difficult to get most of the knowledge I have needed for my programs. If you are looking for a good standalone VB book, look elsewhere, if you are looking for a good reference book for a outside assistance, this could be your answer.

Read this reviews before You buy..."Decent book", This is Microsoft's introductory guide. It walks you through pretty much everything in an efficient manner. Despite the fact that it's long it's not repetitive and you don't get the feeling they're trying to pad it (like some publishers). There's a good chapter on error handling, which is a little confusing for the novice. There are also good intros to objects and components. I don't have any real complaints with the book other than, somehow, I don't find myself referring to it that frequently. If I want quick reference of keywords or commands I end up going to the Nutshell book. I would recommend this book for someone who knows nothing about VB but has programming experience. This will definitely get you up to speed.
"Complete", A complete reference guide for Visual Basic beginners as well as seasoned developers. A definite thumbs-up!
"A Surprisingly Good Smorgasbord", This book covers in only 700+ pages an amazingly large number of topics. Simple Windows Programs, how to match the brackets in the editor, creating bitmaps, assembler generation of the optimizer, COM, MFC, ATL.... The only thing really missing is an absolute beginners instruction on how to use this specific compiler to do the C++ excercises. Anyhow VC misses an important wizard here too. All is explained well and can be grasped with ease. The author is trustworthy and nobody seriously expects that C++ and Windows can be truly explained in anything less than many thousand pages and many, many month accompanying practise.
"Try Another Book", There are several books avilable .. I think the one must be the last one to buy.. Try Visual Basic 6 Black book .. or other books.. this books speaks too much...
"Hey, it's a Programmer's Guide, not a novel.", Yes, it is the online help files in print form. Yes, it DOES have an index. Yes, it has some errors. And yes, coupled with the Reference Library, it's the most useful set of books a VB programmer can own. I've been developing with VB for a year and a half, and I still come back to the Programmer's Guide, because it never hurts to review the fundamentals. Plus, if you think it's only for beginners, try explaining how to implement polymorphism through multiple ActiveX interfaces in a class module. The Programmer's Guide does. Last, but not least, it's a book. Some people just like having a book, rather than reading the computer all the time.
