"Pulled into the Pages" When you open this book expect not only to view, but become alive in the pages! This book is so full of true "old" techniques, patterns, shapes, forms, and use of the home. Beautiful, quality pictures to make you feel as if you are right there in each room. Much to gather visually and use for your own home.
"Nice but not what I expected." It's a nice book if you are expecting a general overview of renovated houses, one in each of several architectural types. I had expected more detail about renovating any style of old house.
"Old fashioned style and house plans" Many of the photos are beautiful but I was a bit disapointed with this book. It is from the publishers of the Not So Big House books and I was hoping for modern house plans with older style details. Actually many of the house plans in this book look very dated to me with separate living and dining rooms and a difficult path to the kitchens. There also seemed to be more emphasis on the appearance of the outside of the houses than the interiors. This may be a good place to start if you are planning to build in a traditional style and floor plan but I prefer the Not So Big books.
"Creating a New Old House-Traditional Architect Review" As an Architect, I have always had an appreciation of old buildings, and the creation of new ones that have the feeling that they have always been there. This book, by Russell Versaci has a wonderful composition of different homes, each encompassing this same ideology, but in different styles from around our great country. I think that this, pictorally, is a wonderful example of how one can make a new home feel as if it has always been a part of its place. But I must say, parts of the text are somewhat dry and repetitive...but other than that, I'd definitely buy this book.
"Great Book for New Old Houses" With the emphasis on quick and low quality development houses build at the cost of destroying forests and farm land, it is great to have a resource for building quality homes with yesterday's character. This book appeals to the "This Old House" and home improvement crowd. It is well written with great pictures and basic floor plans.

What our customer's say!
"Not what I was expecting!", My husband and I are thinking about building a colonial revival home. I was hoping this book would give more examples of what it really takes to make a new house old. What I found was that there was one BRIEF example of each different architectual style with a very general description. There wasn't much to sink our teeth into. The pictures were pretty, but the information was too general.
"Gorgeous", My husband and I are just beginning the process of building a custom home, and this book has been a wonderful resource for me. It is helping me to learn what it is that makes an old home feel so established, and how to achieve the same permanence in a new structure. The photos are gorgeous, and the accompanying text is useful (unlike the frou-frou text of many home design books). If you don't mind that all of the homes were clearly built with extravagant budgets, this book provides fodder for beautiful fantasies...and some nuggets for inclusion in a more modest home, as well.
"Magnificent", Great book on how to update older or run down homes. The pictures are beautiful. It is a book on fine taste in home building.
"Incredible Book", When building our new house; we turned to this book for inspiration. The brand new homes in this book feel rooted to the ground. They have quirks and nooks like an old house full of character would have. There are rooms with a brick wall, hinting at an addition built on over time, although it's a new house. The subtle character that gives an old house its charm, is on full display with this beautiful book. I couldn't recommend this book more!
"back in time", This book was very interesting to look at. The pictures were great if you like old style homes. The title is deceiving. I was looking for a more modern looking style but this book is still a looker but if you're looking to modernize an old home, I would recommend Colonials: Design Ideas for Renovating, Remodeling, and Building New (Updating Classic America) by Matthew Schoenherr.

"This is an Outstanding Book", This book is truly a standout and will be for a long time. I don't agree with the disappointed reviewers here. The book accomplishes its goal---to acquaint the reader with the basics of how to go about designing a wonderful new house that looks old. And yes, quality materials are expensive and the best designs are offered by fine architects. After all, this is their specialty. I don't see this book as an advertisement, but rather as an example of what can be designed. The featured architects should not be expected to give away details of their work products-- the fact that many of them provided drawings of their floorplans is more than enough.
This is not a detailed "how to" book, but rather a book of ideas which delineates the tenets of good design which will stand the test of time. After devouring this book, the reader has a jumping off place--and should be able to explore the details that interest him through further research. It would be impossible to include the kinds of details some seem to want in one single book which is devoted to an explication of the idea of building a new old house.
I don't think anyone who buys this book will be disappointed---it's simply that terrific!
"Pretty picture book, better value than a stack of magazines", I didn't buy this book expecting to be told just how to measure and cut lumber, nail it up and then paint it, I did want more information than I got.
You know how some magazines will have articles on various homes that people have built, giving some of the details on what was done? That's pretty much what you'll find here. There are some very nice detail photographs, good enough floorplans but not a lot more than that. The author did put in an "Eight Pillars of Traditional Design" bit, constantly refers to it too, and maybe a little info box bit with each home telling skimpy details on some bit about achieving a particular look.
You don't get a listing of places to get any of this stuff, or a bibliography of books on it either, just a one page listing of architects at the back of the book.
17 different homes here, it is a very nice idea book (if it just had some information to go with it), cheaper than buying that many magazines for the same information.
"LIKE OLD HOMES BUT BUILDING NEW? THIS IS A MUST HAVE BOOK.", Planning to design and build a new home that appears old is no easy task. After owning homes as old as 160 years old, we decided to build a home with all the character of something old but with all the benefits of new. Russell Versaci writes a tremendous text explaining briefly the do's and don'ts, why's and how's. A visit to his architecture firm's website shows some of his other projects. A talented architect, and now a talented author. These homes are not cheap to design and build. I was quoted by architects listed in the book that to build a home designed to their level of detail can run $300-$400/ sq.ft. including design fees. An individual attempting to build such a home will no doubt hire an architect. This book will provide important references, and stimulate ideas, while working with your architect and builder.

"Picture Book", This is a pretty picture book. It is not to be used as a reference book as I expected. It shows new homes that were built to look old and it tells what they did for that particular home. It does not give information on how to make your home look old or what details to add.
"Nothing more than an expensive advertisement...", ...for a bunch of architects...lots of pretty pictures but no useful information -- e.g. sources...diagrams are too small and general to be of any use...they should be paying the buyer to read their ads -- not vice-versa!
