"it is as informative as they get" this has all the needed info for and details needed to get a proyect going and to confirm your ideas againts it. it was a very good reference book for checking up on those shady areas of construction with wood frames.
"Not very informative" Unless you are a professional contractor, and if you are, you don't need this book anyway. I built a garage earlier this year and purchased this book as a reference. This is a very detailed book, but be careful and check your local codes. I would consult a contractor first in your local area, most will talk to you at no charge, if they want to charge you, keep looking
"Perfect for the amateur" I build for Habitat for Humanity. The book gives a very quick and easy graphic introduction to many of the skills our volunteers use when building a home. I carry it in my truck as a basic reference when a question is asked. It also covers some of the more complex issues of complex roof profiles and unique framing challenges. It's a must-have for anyone framing a house.
"Graphic Guide To Framing Construction" A lot of pictures, plus multiple ways to do the same thing. I think this book is a bible to Framing. A+.
"A terrific reference book" Graphic Guide to Frame Construction (Paperback)
After preparing 8 pages of detailed engineering-size construction drawings for contractors to bid on a two-story addition to our house, I came across this book. Even though I have many years of (mostly remodeling) experience, this book provided lots of great tips on the best ways to do foundations and walls, flashing, roofing and other areas. Those drawings have now been modified to incorporate what I've learned. Lucky I read this book BEFORE starting the project. Change orders, once construction begins, are costly, since you have little leverage with the contractor at that point.
Materials and techniques used in frame construction have evolved over the years, and the previous (similar) book I had was substantially obsolete. This one cites the latest materials and approaches, as of the year 2000, and is well worth the cost for anyone contemplating a framing job of almost any size. It's doubtful that any contractor knows the best methods to do everything this book explains, not to mention non-contractors. That makes this book a good resource for any experience level. About half of the book's pages have one or more detailed drawings to show you how to do "it" (see customer images for a sample). The spiral binding is particularly helpful in using it on-the-job, or to photo-copy or scan.
The five chapters, foundations, floors, walls, roofs, and stairs, cover virtually every aspect of frame construction, including decks and porches.
The book doesn't cover everything. For example, there is no mention of the APA (Wood Engineering Association), Narrow Wall Bracing Method, an important subject when building sunrooms, or other structure with narrow corner walls or walls between window or door openings. Nevertheless, it's a great reference well worth the price.

What our customer's say!
"Great reference", A great reference for the DIY homeowner. Lots of drawings to show you the right way to do things from foundations to framing.
"pretty good", This book has a lot of good framing scenarios interesting tidbits. Both a good reference and interesting to page through.
"Great", I do a lot of non-professional new construction. For me, visualizing the right way do do something is the problem. Once the skin is on a building I have no idea what lies underneath -- I have no 'guide' to model my construction after. Also, building according to convention is useful -- for instance, it's good to know that you can expect to find a vertical stud in a wall every 16 or 24 inches, regardless of who built the building and when -- and this book clarifies what those conventions are.
This is a great book. The graphic representations are exceptionally clear and detailed. Many alternatives are given, and in building you simply choose the alternative that gives you the most of what you want and follow the diagram.
"Great basic reference for residential building", Have been using this reference for years as an Architect. Probably the best one out there that covers all the basics. Not overly complicated. Could use an advanced version for more complicated details, especially in roofing (half-hips, etc.) and foundations. Great reference for the nomencalture of all the parts. Do not expect to build from it as codes and structural sizing are required and vary too much, but good, basic detailing and understanding overall with plenty of illustrations.
"Good, but lacking some important information", This is a good reference for framing details, which I turn to frequently as we work on the design for our new home. That said, there are numerous gaps and while some might be excused as esoteric, like framing a swept roof at the eaves (though it is pictured on the cover of the book), many others are not, such as flashing at masonry entry steps. I would like to see the book updated to include more "Building Science" lessons, OVE (Optimum Value Engineering)and perhaps SIPS. Still a good book, overall.

"Straightforward", This is a very easy to follow guide to wood frame construction. I recommend it as a basic reference.
"Excellent Resource for Wood Frame Construction", This is a wonderful book to have on the reference shelf. It answers so many questions about wood frame construction in a clear manner with great graphic depictions.
"Invaluable for Anyone Who Wants to Build", I am a beginning amateur builder of outbuildings on my property, and this book is wonderful. Easy to understand, the pictures are very descriptive. It is all I need. I gave a beat-up copy (after ordering another for myself) to a friend who just got his contractor's license and the next day he acted as though I'd given him gold. I recommend getting the spiral bound version - so much easier to use on the job site. This book cannot be rated high enough.
"Good graphic presentaion of wood frame construction", This book is a good tool for anyone, do-it-yourselfer or not, to grasp how North American homes are put together. An excellent tool to learn the nomenclature of houses and house construction. I missed a discussion of the the reasons for and the pros and cons of the various methods. On the other hand, the lack of text is a strongpoint of this book, at least for those who want to quickly get up to speed on home construction.
"Graphic Guide to Frame Construction: Details for Builders and Designers (For Pros by Pros)", great book. Recommend it to anyone how would like to learn about framing.
