"Very Good For Web Developers Without a Design Background"
Many of my Web development students come in with a basic understanding of Web languages or programming languages, but little experience with actual design. Even those who are artists often are not familiar with the principles of design, or are unsure as to how those might best translate to the new medium of the Web. I give this book a 5-star rating because it is so instantly applicable to those who need to baby-step towards better design sense and practices. Web developers, get past your ego and consider the possibility that your stuff isn't as pretty or usable as you think it is--then pick up a few books on Web design and see where it takes you. This book is a good place to start!

"Incredible useful"
Im not a graphic designer but this book helps a lot, you will find links to great css websites where you can get ideas, you will learn the do's and Dont's when creating a website. I recommend this book a lot.
Finding something about layout, colors, typefonts? this cover all.

Have a blessed life.

"Excellent book on beginning design theory"
While looking for books to inspire some more creativity in my design work, I came across a fairly thin book entitled "The Principals of Beautiful Web Design" and it just happened to be the book that I've been looking for. In the past I've read books that cover different components that can be used in design, but never how they should all come together or what makes colors work together; I finally picked up a resource that covers color theory! Not just colors, but layouts, the art of typography, using and creating texture, as well as some basic introductions into Photoshop techniques (though, as the author himself states, if you want a book on Photoshop, get a book on Photoshop).

While reading through this book, I found the author's humor throughout entertaining and lightening of what can easily become a very dense subject. The overall style of writing and the examples given make the book very engaging and, as I found out pretty quickly, hard to put down; surprising for a book about design theory. Speaking about the examples, many of them have now found their way to my web browser bookmarks, and I am sure that they will also grace yours as well.

The only thing bad that I would have to say about the book is that it is very short. Coming in at a fairly skinny 163 pages, I definitely questioned if a book as thin as this could justify the price tag. My fears were soon forgotten as I began to read what I found to be a very well rounded introduction to, well, the principals of beautiful web design. I still wish that the book was twice its size due to the fact that I went through it in less than a week in my leisure time coupled with how much I truly enjoyed reading it. I have not yet looked to see if the author, Jason Beaird, has written any other books, but I for one would gladly pick up a more advanced or continuation version on the same topic by this author. I would also stress that if you are an already excellent designer or a person coming from a studio art or design background, this book will most likely be a refresher at best, but for me, someone coming from a more technical background starting with limited design skills, this book is an indispensible step towards making better design choices.

"web 2.0 design"
Very nice overview of current web design trends. As Creative Director with over 40 years in the advertising game, I applaud the direction that web 2.0 design trends are taking. Web design is finally approaching a little maturity and slowly becoming the most powerful and cost-effective marketing medium we've ever seen. This book gives a good overview of how we got there and where we came from. It's strictly concerned with design. Don't expect any info on contemporary programming trends. But there are plenty of good books available for that too.

"MUST book for web designers"
This is a book that I should have bought earlier when I started a web design company. It is very well designed to make reading easy. It explains all the things you need to know, starting from meetings with your customers and going on to typography, CSS, colors and a lot more details that can make a website correct and beautiful. I would certainly recommend this book.

"Great Web Design Resource", The Principles of Beautiful Web Design is an easy read but is full of ideas that help stimulate your creativity. It delves into many subtle psychological issues in web design that can make the difference between an "ok" website and a "beautiful" website. It is not primarily a technical book, so it can be understood without a knowledge of HTML and CSS.

Perhaps one of the most valuable aspects of this book is being able to see the developement steps Jason Beaird takes when going from concept to a final website. While it may not be a book you would pick up again after the first read, I would certainly recommend the "first read". It has many useful ideas that any web designer can personalize and implement.

"Become An Artist", This book does the incredible, it actually teaches sound artistic principles such as textures and color combinations. If you did not think of yourself as an "artist" before reading this book, you certainly will after.

There are beautiful illustrations within this book so that you can actually see for yourself the artistic principles the author is using words to describe. The old cliche "a picture is worth a thousand words" is certainly true for this masterpiece.

One of the chapters I found most interesting is the one on balance. I remember taking an art appreciation class in college that talked about balance. Here's the difference though. In college it was SOO boring. It was all "pie in the sky" theory. Beaird, on the other hand, not only defines balance, but then goes the extra step of how to use the principle of balance in your own website design and even gives you examples. I like the very practical nature of this book.

As a marketer, I really liked the chapter on color psychology and how you push psychological buttons in people by choosing a combination of certain colors. This is extremely valuable information for the marketer who wants to artistically reinforce his marketing message. For example, emphasizing the bad things that are going to happen if someone doesn't buy your product or service is always stronger than emphasizing the good things that are going to happen if they do. So, if you are using fear in your sales copy to sell your product or service, you can reinforce this marketing message by choosing fear inducing colors. Cool stuff! I also liked the use of color wheels to help you pick complementary and contrasting colors. I'm terrible with matching colors, just ask my wife! So the lesson on how to use color wheels was very helpful.

Again, this book is all about the artistic side of web design and not on how to use php, javascript, or CSS.

This book is truly a work of art.

From the author of Internet Marketing-Profits That Lie Hidden In Your Website: How To Triple Your Web Sales In 25 Days

"Useful but not thorough", I'm a programmer with an artistic side that is waiting to be born.

I didn't realize that web designers are actually artists bringing their talents onto a monitor screen (duh?). They go through formal training and education in graphic designs, theories, etc and they use all of that to get a site looking good. I always thought websites somehow would just look good on the front end if someone just casually work on it and as long as us backend programmers are at work then all is well (too much credit to back enders here huh?)

Anyways, I found a few interesting things in this book. The color wheel was good. I've been wondering why my color combination never work out right. The rule of 3rd is good. The different sample of websites gave me a keener way of categorizing layout types. The stock photo sites are good resources. The steps the author takes towards developing a layout is good - planining, contemplating, matching colors with company's themes/logo...I can see how the designer comes up with a layout, which is of much use.

The book feels a bit too general, however. I give it 3 stars. The first couple chapters of the book was best for me. The chapter on typeography was the least enjoyed. Some of the photoshop's "how to's" steps by step were oddly given since the book isn't about how to use photoshop. It felt like these were "fillers" of the book.

"Terrific Book", Beautiful Web Design gives the user an insight look into what to think about when laying out your web site. Typography, color theory, composition and more all come into play. The author of this book is great!

"Great book!", I love this clearly-written well illustrated book. It's well paced, increasing in complexity as it goes along. I have stickies all over and keep going through it again and again, each time finding new and useful suggestions. I have several web design and CSS books, but this one is my favorite.

"Disappointed", I'm a regular visitor to sitepoint. I do enjoy Jason Beard's writings. However, after finishing this book I find myself not one whit smarter and actually feel dumber for having spent the $ on it. Seriously, anything this elementary should be billed as so. I learned nothing.

"A suprisingly informative book", I was concerned that this might be a coffee table picture book of pretty website, but it could not be further than that! The wide range of topics covered include how colors work together and what they symbolize, how to determine pleasing proportions, image file formats, typography, back ground textures... just a huge range subjects you won't find much of in books that teach or reference the code aspects of web development. Now, those who have a formal education in design may not find this book any more than a refresher, but for the rest of us... it could be a real eye opener!

"Ho hum book", I knew nothing about Web design before the book, after the book, I know about the color wheel. Most of the other things that he glossed over I found to be like a collection of amateur blogs strung together in a book. To me, it felt like he was afraid to teach us anything useful, as it would correlate to more competition for him.

Perhaps I expected too much of the book, but it seemed to be verbose for the sake of it. Also, I was hoping there would be some tie in to the actual programming of the site. To me, it seemed like he just gave a very brief description of how to make photo's look better by using Photoshop.

I am willing to admit, perhaps though, I think "Web Design" should encompass some functionality to it as well, as opposed to just pretty pictures. I may very well be completely ignorant to it, but it wasn't the book that I was looking for. I would give it 1 star, but I felt there is a good chance that I'm the one who made a mistake and bought the wrong type of book for what I was looking for. So I gave it 3.

"Very useful book", This is one of the best web design books I've ever read. It's well written and gives you a lot of practical advices that go beyond just web design and cover topics such as meeting with clients, gathering information and essentially being a freelance web designer.

"Suggested for a programmer...", As a graphic designer with years of design training I have to say that I didn't receive too much new information on this book, however for a programmer this book is a gem. This book will go to the programming dept where it will be used very frequently. If you have years of design training than this book is probably not where you want to start.

If you have not been to sitepoint yet go to their website and look through a plethora of web design inspiration and see the books available for what fits you better. Then come back to amazon and purchase the book here. (You'll save a bundle). Hope this helps.
