"Great book--Exposure to grammar, not mastery is key" I just recieved this book in the mail the other day and after thumbing through it a little while, I've decided I really like it. Now, I did find a poem or two where the wording is not the original, hence the 4 star rating. I didn't find this issue problematic, I just looked up the original poem online, printed it out and stuck it in my book. Doing this allowed me the oppotunity to find out some extra information on the actual poet, which was helpful, and I plan on sharing that information with my child. I love how the author (Jesse Wise) states that we tend to underestimate what our young children are capable learning. This book is all about exposing the child to grammar, mastery is not expected at this level. I'm excited to get started with this book. It's simply done, and seems very easy going, not a stressful grammar program at all. Which makes it really fun for both parent and child.
"we actually like this!" I got this book for my 5-year-old, with some reservations based on other reviews. However, she actually likes doing the lessons with me. It's an easy way for me to teach English language, and a good way for her to hear proper spoken English. It has made the task of teaching English grammar to a small child relatively easy.
"Satisfied Homeschooler" I had decided to try out Rod and Staff english at the begining of the year. A few months into school, my children where very bored with the curriculum. So I looked around and found this book. My first and second grader love it. I use this book together with the other curriculum that I had purchased earlier. I love that my six year old is learning her nouns ect. enough to be able to sit and participate in our daily Mad Lib games. She understands the definition of nouns, verbs ect. All due to this really great book. I highly recommend this book. Its chanllenging but, so worth it.
"Mixed Bag" I have a love/hate relationship with this title. Pros: inexpensive, solid introduction to grammar, usage, mechanics, and copywork in short, easy-to-teach lessons. Cons: excessive repetition, dumbed-down & altered versions of poems & stories, many of the concepts too easy for target audience of 1st & 2nd graders. I had originally planned to condense this into 1 year but we're 10 weeks into the school year & almost halfway through the book. So at the rate we're going, we'll be finished with it mid-winter. I think it's been worthwhile but am a bit disappointed because it wasn't as good as it had the potential to be.
"She's excited about English" I used to teach middle and high school grammar. This, however, did not prepare me for the job of teaching a first grader. I knew where I wanted her to go, but not how to get her started. This book was recommended, and I tried it with a "wait and see" attitude. It seems rather dull at first glance. There are no bells and whistles, no cutesy techniques. Simply put, however, my six-year-old loves English. I've come to appreciate the wisdom of the narration exercises and the picture discussions. It has been a pleasant surprise for both of us. My daughter's skills in both speech and narration improved within a few lessons, and she loves memorizing the poems (they are well chosen for this age group). She never balks when I ask for her to restate things in complete sentences. Personally, I like the instructor dialogue. It's become a mental guide even after the book is closed for the day. The lessons are very repetitive, but that is another plus in our case. Six-year-olds actually like that. I get a little bored, but she doesn't, and that's what matters. The bottom line for me is always the same: Is she developing? Does she ask for more? Yes and yes. My third grader is now using Wise's next book with similar results.

"absolutly wonderful", This book is extremly easy to use and can be used for grammar, writing and poetry. It has everything your 1st & 2nd grader needs. My 2nd grader loves it and my kindergartener is eager to join his brother. It gives you (teacher) a great script to follow, this makes it easy for my husband to substitute when I'm not available.
"A Fair Review & A Comparison to Other Popular Curriculum!", Most of us really like this book. We use this book in our homeschool family. It is simple, straight forward and not labor intensive for parent or child. This is a great grammer program. After looking at some of the not so flattering comments about this book, I decided to inspect it for myself. YES, they do change some of the wording in the poems. If this presents a problem for you, look up the originals online and make your choice at that time. YES, it is repetative, however, my child has been tested by our local public school and has been designated as "gifted" -- the repetition can be altered to fit your childs individual needs. YES, it is scripted, which allows for ease of use. If you do not need this type of curriculum, you can use it as a spine. FINALLY, I have compared this book to (3) three other curriculums -- Abeka, Bob Jones and Sonlight -- all are thorough in there presentations and FLL stacks up quite nicely when you do an apples to apples comparison of what your child will learn over the course of a school year! Our family has homeschooled for a total of 18 years and I have graduated 2 children who have successfuly gone onto college and our state university. I can confidently say, that your first and second grader will be well served with this book alone, or as a supplement to another grammer program of your choosing and finally, you can choose it as a summer brush-up program. BLESSINGS!
"Separating the Mechanics of Writing from the Creation of Original Sentences", From an educational philosophy standpoint, I completely agree with Bauer that grammar-age students (grades 1 - 4) need a chance to learn and practice the mechanics of writing before adding in the variable of creating original content with complete sentences, correct grammar, and proper punctuation. To this end, her beginning levels use copywork and dictation to expose the student to complete sentences with correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation. If your child enjoys original writing, by all means allow it (at a separate time), but it is NOT required. In this way, the creation of original things to say (in complete sentences) is separated from the actual mechanics of writing. Removal of this variable simplifies the learning process and eases the burden on the young writer.
From a personal standpoint, I began homeschooling with a 2nd grader, and we completed all 200 lessons in one year (the book is intended to be used for both 1st and 2nd grade). The level 3 book was not yet available, so we then switched over to Rod & Staff grammar & writing as the author recommended in another of her books "The Well-Trained Mind." Rod and Staff is thorough and perfectly adequate, but I much prefer Bauer's style of teaching writing and grammar. Peace Hill Press indicates that Bauer intends to eventually prepare levels from grades 1 - 12. I heartily recommend her program to everyone.
"Great homeschooling book", I bought this to use with my almost 6 year old as part of our homeschool curriculum and I love it. The lessons are short, we usually only take about 5-10 minutes per lesson. They are set up for easy use by the instructor and my son likes to do the lessons. I would recommend this to anyone, especially if you are at all intimidated about teaching your child about the English language.
"Mindless Twaddle", When selecting a language arts curriculum for our child I ordered a copy of "First Language Lessons." After examining the curriculum I returned my copy for a refund. Jessie Wise has taken Emma Serl's books "Primary Language Lessons and Intermediate Language Lesson" given them a few twists to create her own book of language lessons. The book consists of mindless twaddle. Wise does not use true "narration" which is having a child repeat back to you in their own words what they have learned. The lessons are monotonuous and have been "dumbed down" from Serl's original text. The poems and stories have been altered to make them "politically correct." Serl's text is a breath of fresh air, engaging the child in language arts with classical literature and poetry. I was quite disappointed in this curriculum as I had expected a higher standard from Jessie Wise. The two language arts curriculums I recommend to parents are Emma Serl's "Primary Language Lessons and Intermediate Language Lessons" and Ambleside Onlines Language Arts Curriculum. Both of these curriculums will serve a student well, giving them a firm foundation in language arts.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"Horrible book....", I'm not a fan of books that tell the instructor exactly what to say and leave little or no room for instruction to be geared towards a student's abilities, but even if I was I would hate this book. The poem/reading selections are lacking, and they overkill on repetition without introducing new concepts in a timely manner. After 5-6 lessons the author has introduced the concept of a noun as well as common and proper nouns. Then she continues to repeat this information for the next 40 lessons before pronouns are introduced.
"Useful, but overly specific", I like the memory work and the grammar in this book. My girls have learned alot of poems by heart and they can tell you the definitions of the nouns and verbs etc. I don't like, however, that each lesson is dragged out for so long. My kids started this book at the ages of 4 and 6 last year and are still using it, though less frequently now. They really don't need a week or more to learn each lesson, so we skip alot in this book. I also don't like the re-done versions of certain classics like the "Sunday's Child" poem. So we looked up the original online to teach them instead.
"It's amazing what your child can learn with this book", I must admit that we do not use this book exclusively. I partner it with another language arts program and phonics instruction, so we end up using First Language Lessons about twice a week. Even so, I have seen amazing benefits from using this book.
First Language Lessons introduces the parts of speech, poetry memorization, narration, and dictation/copywork. I have found it to be a very gentle and enjoyable introduction to grammar for my child. You might not think that learning the difference between common and proper nouns, for example, is very important at a young age, but I have found that it has assisted my daughter's writing. Instead of simply telling her that a word has to be capitalized, I can now remind her that a word is a proper noun and she is able to make the corrections herself. Language and grammar rules are starting to make sense to her, simply because she has memorized a few key definitions.
My daughter especially likes learning the poems. I like how easy it is for me to teach since it is scripted for the parent. Would I use this as a stand-alone language arts program? Probably not. But it has been a useful supplement for us.

I have in fact been finding this book very useful. It introduces grammar concepts in a way that prepares a child for more intensive grammar lessons later on. It encourages narration and gives the new homeschooling parent all the help she could require in introducing love of proper English to the child. The lessons are very manageable and lareg homeschooling families can benefit from the little bites of wisdom suggested each day. I have found this book to be very helpful.
I find that the stories written by the authors use simplistic language. Most classical curriculums recommend writers such as Andrew Lang, Beatrix Potter and Thornton Burgess as read aloud material at this age level. I fail to understand why such well educated women as Susan Bauer and Jessie Weiss insist on writing in a style that is so inferior to the style of prose they would recommend to parents to read to their children.
I was very upset when I saw that one of the poems was changed from the original without mention of this fact anywhere in the book. The poem by Christina Rossetti had two lines removed and one line changed. The beautiful imagery and wording used by Christina Rosssetti was removed at the most poignant of instances. I would have preferred that my children learn the superior original and be able to partake in what Christina Rossetti wanted the children to have.
I felt that my children had been gypped and I have ever since regarded any product by the Weiss-Bauer family with great suspicion.
"Boring boring boring", I guess if you have no idea how to teach your kids language (if you're homeschooling), and you need a lot of structure, this is the book for you. I found it about as dry as a dictionary.
