"Great Beginner Book!"
Great Beginner's book. Patricia G-Roberts instructions and history of spinning is engaging and very easy to understand. There are line drawings to help you visualize the drop whorl spinning process. She also explains the differences between High an Low whorl spindles and is an excellent teacher. Very much worth the investment for a Beginner High Whorl hand spinner or a wanna be.

"This one's a keeper"
I'm a spinning newbie, so I've been collecting books on the subject. This one I know I'll go back to for review, charts, and because I seem to learn something new everytime I read it. The best starter book I've seen.

"Most lucid explanations"
This is by far the best book/explanation of spindling technique that I have ever read. Not only does Priscilla Gibson-Roberts tell you what to do but she tells you why. That goes for technique and tool selection, also. Who would have known that so much went into designing an effective top-whorl hand spindle?

As far as I am concerned, this book does it all.

"Very informative!"
While I have crocheted and knitted for ages, spinning is a new art for me. This book introduced me to a whole new and exciting world with great instructions as well as information to be successful with spinning.

"Excellent resource"
I purchased this book after finding that a more basic spindle spinning book, while valuable, did not answer a myriad of questions that I had. Twist? Drafting methods? Plying? So many things I wanted to learn about... And Spinning in the Old Way really covered everything I wanted to know. It's one of those books that you will keep in your library and refer to as needed and never, ever part with.

What our customer's say!

"Must have for book for users of high whorl spindles", This book covers almost every aspect of using a high whorl drop spindle. It is well written and easy to follow for the beginner and a good reference for more advanced spinners. I rate it as a must have book for any spinners.

PGR gives more than 1 way to do each action and encourages you to use the one that feels right for you. There are always more than "1 way to skin a cat" and most books don't tell you that. The pics and tables are great. Both eastern and western styles of spinning are discussed. There are very good sections on cop building, plying and yarn finishing.

PGR also tries to give the reader many low cost options and shows how portable using drop spindles can be (also how it can be used to allow many to spin even if they have physical difficulties with their hands).

I use both spinning wheels and drop spindles and always have a little carry bag with my drop spindle and fiber to take with me whenever I am out and about. As she says, it is amazing just how much yarn you can spin in short periods of time. The only problem I have had with the high whorl spindle is convincing my cats that it is not a toy for their amusement!

"yay! spinning in the old way!", this is the best thing ive ever bought on the subject in book form and im thrilled that i bought it! i would recommend it to anyone wishing to learn to spin!

"Thoroughly readable and informative", I am new to spinning with a top whorl spindle, and got this on a whim. I found it fully digestible, with loads of well-written information. The illustrations are clear and useful, covering types of spindles, preparation of purchased fiber, woolen vs. worsted preparation and spinning, direction of spin, plying, cabling, and finishing. It also covers using a nostepinne as a tool for plying.

Ms. Gibson-Roberts is clear, concise and logical about her preferences, but adds other alternatives so that the reader can choose her methods or alternatives, understanding why each might be useful or problematic. She is thrifty, encouraging a minimalistic approach. A list of suppliers is provided at the end, many of whom can be found on the web.

This is an excellent introduction for the novice "spindler".

"Fantastic", Gave a wonderful overview of hand spinning, making a strong case for the top whorl spindle. I had been trying to learn by myself, with a starter spindle a friend gave me, and found myself spinning better within hours of reading! I love the drawings, the connections to tradition, and her helpful sharing of various techniques.

"Best little book on high-whorl spinning", I have several books on hand-spinning and this is THE best. My only complaint is lack of photos but that would jack up the price and isn't really necessary. The illustrations do a good job as is. I learned to spin on a high-whorl spindle by buying one and doing the spinny thing with my fingers - this book shows how you get WAY more spin by spinning it (in the old way!) up or down your thigh. At first this sounded hokey. I thought I had a good spin using my fingers. I was wrong. Now I'm a convert to thigh-spinning! (I know it sounds weird, but this author knows what she is talking about!)

The book also talks about how you can use cheap and inexpensive things as spinning tools. I like the author's idea of keeping it simple and portable. I also like the section on plying - lacking in a lot of books. The author actually tried a bunch of ways and rated them for ease, and then tells how to do it in the easiest way. That's useful.

I love the book and would recommend it to anyone. If you don't have a drop spindle yet, BUY THE BOOK FIRST, then shop for your spindle when you know something about the difference between a good, useful one and a bad one. I had to get rid of my first "beginner" spindle - it wobbled, had a bad hook, and no notch.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"very helpful!", I just learnt how spin last week and saw another book, which I will not mention- which was useless. this book is excellent! it explains the process, variations, techniques, different spindles (who knew?) and gives clear instructions that even a beginner can follow. it really illuminates the hand spinning process. don't be fooled by some other book's glossy look.

"We can all learn a bit more", from this book, even the experienced spinners! I haven't read any of Priscillas other books, so the reprint issue is irrelevent, but as someone who gave up on trying to spin with a bottom whorl spindle, the top whorl spindle is a revelation, and I have yet to see a book available to Australian spinners that has the wealth and variety of information that is explained in this book!
Even if you don't spindle spin, there is a lot to learn about fibre preparation, plying and other aspects of spinning that it is so often taken for granted that we know! If you don't have the original, beg borrow or steal a copy if you can't get it here!

"Good Information", This is an excellent book for a beginner spinner with a spindle. I have found it to be very helpful and recommend it to other beginner spindlers. While many of the hand drawn pictures work just fine, it can be difficult to figure out the actual MOTION required to roll a spindle up or down a leg and drafting, I believe, really does take someone showing you.. . or just a heck of a lot of practice. The best thing about this book is how encouraging she is and how it really is perfectly acceptable to just spin. Practical advise, however, abounds and she gives good suggestions for how to make different yarns for different uses.

"See the other reviews before buying", I respect Priscilla and she is a great teacher. She's done some wonderful books with great details. Frankly, the ones from Nomad Press have not been very good. And this is the ultimate blow--to update a book previously released and not bother to mention it anywhere. This is the High Whorling book with updated pictures and a few updated details. Since I already own that book, it was a total waste for me to buy this one. If you don't own it, then this is definitely worth buying. I'm very disappointed and will be leery of buying any more Nomad Press books. There's no excuse for treating this like it is new material.

"REPRINT of great OOP book", On the plus side: if you haven't been able to get a copy of High Whorling, now a reprint is available. The definitive book about spinning with a high whorl spindle.
On the minus side, noplace have I seen it tell you it's a reprint so now I have two copies. There isn't anything I've seen anywhere, including in the book itself, that says it's a reprint or calls out new material. If you have High Whorling, you DON'T NEED this as far as I can tell. Too bad for me I bought it...
