Others say...
"Pretty Good - Smaller than expected" This cookbook is rather thin and contains no pictures - I'm a visual person so that didn't appeal to me. It does contain wonderful charts to help you with planning and several recipies that sounded enticing. I'm glad I checked it out from the library first. I would have been disappointed to spend that much money on such a small book.
"Comprehensive charts and good instructions" This is the best book to buy if you're just getting started, if only because of the exhaustive charts. I own a very early copy ('way back when they were sold in 3-ring binder format), and while not all of the recipes are to my taste, the charts allow you to use any freezer-friendly recipes you like in order to make up your month's worth of meals.
This is important because while there are other OAMC (or once a week) cookbooks out there with some pretty good recipes, a lot of them have you eating that same main ingredient (say, chicken) for the the whole week. Or, their shopping lists are only useful if you're making their entire menu for that shopping list (and no commercial cookbook could possibly have every single recipe be a winner). With 30-day Gourmet, you can make up your shopping lists to go with your favorite recipes. Chicken on sale that week? Pull out your chicken chart. Same for beef or vegetables.
This is the best book to learn the system with.
"Perfect for beginners" This book is really for beginners, or those that need some hints or organization. It starts off with all the how to's and such. There is not a large section with recipes, but you do get a username and password to a website that has over 250 additional recipes. This book comes with many spreadsheets to keep the day running smoothly, and let me tell you that makes a huge difference. ALL IN ALL: If you have in down and are just looking for new recipes, look around, if you are new to freezer cooking, this is perfect.
"Good for planning fanatics" This book is more an instructional book on how to multiply recipes than an actual cookbook. Access to the extra online recipes are nice. Check out the website before deciding whether or not this is the book you're looking for. I prefer Don't Panic, Dinner's in the Freezer for ideas on unique recipes for the freezer.
"Excellent Manual!" As a beginning freezer cook, I found everything I could have wanted and more in this book! Nanci lays everything out in a very orderly fashion to get you from picking how many recipes and how much of each to plan for, through shopping, prepping, cooking and freezing. She presents three different freezer cooking methods, making the daunting task of making 30 meals in a day not your only option to stock up your freezer.
This book is truly a *manual* -there is much practical, useful information to be had in this book besides "a bunch of freezer recipes." The recipes don't begin until page 48, and there's an appendix that covers a bit, too. Other information includes: how to use your own recipes (what freezes well, what doesn't, and what works better half-cooked), what to do in a power failure, and how to select, install, and maintain your freezer.
What I appreciated was the down-to-earth, realistic approach taken. I liked how Nanci presented several different ways of getting the job done, and made it seem like anyone can freezer cook successfully with a little planning, and have fun while saving money.
For the recipe format, I find the non-traditional listing of ingredients very helpful for cooking in multiples. It's essentially what I do in my own cookbook when halving or doubling a recipe, just cleanly laid out instead of jotted in the margin. (I typically use a sticky note to mark which column I'm working from, and it works well.) There's also a multiplication chart (p128 of 4th ed.) for when you're multiplying your own recipes out, so you don't have to think about fractions, like what triple of 2 3/4 cup is. I also appreciate her directions including both "freeze now" and "serve now" instructions.
The recipes themselves have been rarely misses in our house (DH and I). There's plenty of information to convert your own recipes if that's not the case for you. I've taken several of our favorites and have had success freezing them with these helps and tips. I heartily recommend this Freezer Cooking Manual!

What our customer's say!
"save your sanity, save your money: Use this book!!", I have been freezer cooking for over 6 years thanks to 30 Day Gourmet. I started when my children were very young and I was a stay at home mom. Today I am a working mom with preteens and this book still never fails to save my time, money, and sanity! Nothing is better than knowing after a long day at work and a soon to be long evening of homework and errands that dinner is prepared and planned ahead of time. Talk about a stress reducer! How much is one extra hour added into your day worth? For my family it is priceless. Not to mention the savings you can get from preparing and freezing your meals ahead of time. My family saw a reduction of $200 a month in food costs alone. This comes from buying items on sale, using what you purchase before it goes bad, and NOT needing to run to fast food after a crazy day. The Freezer Cooking Manual gives you all the tools to make it possible with worksheets, recipes and a complete system for freezer cooking. Buy this book and see the results for yourself!
"Great Plan, So-So Recipes", As someone new to the concept of once-a-month cooking, I found the step-by-step approach and the worksheets very helpful. The authors provide a detailed description of the planning, shopping, cooking, and packaging phases of freezer cooking. They also provide worksheets and forms to help with all of these steps. The recipes, however, were mostly uninspired and/or relied heavily on processed foods. I don't really need another recipe for spaghetti sauce or meat loaf, and I don't use Velveeta or bottled salad dressing. I just applied their process to my own recipes, which is actually pretty easy. If you're looking for a place to get started in freezer cooking, this book can be really useful. If you're just looking for a source of good freezer recipes, look elsewhere.
"Excellent Charts! Checklists! Makes it look easy!", I have purchased several once a month cooking books after borrowing them from the library. This is one of them. The organization, charts and checklists make the price of this book worth it alone.
The recipes are like another reviewer noted, are geared toward kids. My kids are grown and I have a busy job and a husband that had a heart attack three years ago. I cook ahead to make my life easier, but I have to take into account that my husband can't eat ground beef, etc. I have used this book and edited it with veggie ground beef, turkey sausage etc. It works just as well although I have to say I haven't gotten "up to" cooking for a whole month in one day. I don't have anyone to do this with so it's just little old me.
For first timers I recommend starting with 4 or 5 recipes you would like to try and doubling or tripling them. Do this for a few weeks and it will go much easier. The lists will guide you and the recipes give you the amounts to use to make 2, 4, etc. meals.
The first time I tried to cook for a month, I picked 6 hard recipes where you had to basically "cook" them and freeze them. It took me all day long. I was so dissapointed I was ready to give up. Don't do that to yourself, work up to it. Having the meals ready made it worth revising my plan. Pick some easy ones that you just have to marinate in the freezer and the actual recipe is grilled or cooked the day you eat it. Have some pre cooked recipes that are all ready except for heating up like lasagna. Pick some that can be just thawed and thrown in a crockpot the morning you plan on eating it.
This book not only tells you the amounts you need for doubling or tripling a recipe, it usually gives you the option of doing the cooking ahead or prep and freeze to cook on the day you plan on eating it.
Alot of the other books have shopping lists and pre cooking day instructions. They are useless if you have to cut out the red meat and revise the list. This book gives you the template to make your own list suited to your family and their tastes.
"Save Money, Save Time, Save Sanity!", For the cost of only one meal for a family of 4, this book pays for itself! With the rising cost of fuel, think of all the money you will save being able to pull from your freezer a meal of baked chicken, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole and apple pie! While there are great recipes in this book, there are wonderful worksheets provided to allow you to adapt YOUR family favorites! You decide the number of batches to make - will it be a double, triple . . . quintuple? I was fortunate enough to see the author and her original business partner on a family talk show over 10 years ago and have been a fan ever since. Over the years (4 kids later) this book has taught me the skills I needed to save so much money, time and sanity. A small investment in time yields a freezer full of homemade food where you determine how much salt and fat and sugar are in your Muffins, Quiche, Macaroni and Cheese! Having meals on hand have come in handy to share with friends coming home from the hospital after surgery or having babies. There are great tips on what foods freeze well (ones that don't, too!), containers to use (even if you have limited space) just to name a few. One of the best hidden treasures of this book is the link to the 30DG website where there is a wonderful community of freezer cooks and newsletters! Make it a family affair - shopping, labeling, cooking and eating for everyone!
"GREAT COOKING SYSTEM FOR ANY STAGE OF LIFE", I started with this book over 7 years ago when I was homeschooling my kids during the day and ferrying them to activities in the afternoon and evening. 30 day Gourmet allowed me to cook when it was convenient for me, freeze meals, and put a healthy, tasty, economical meal on the table on even the most hectic of nights. The recipes are family-friendly and the directions clear and complete. Now that the kids are in college I still cook and freeze. My husband is such a fan that he has started helping me on my cooking days. My kids enjoy having a few of their favorite meals "ala Mom" in the freezer of their apartments. I'm back to work, so there is always a freezer meal for me and my husband on those nights neither of us wants to cook, and I put aside a few meals for my elderly mother-in-law who cannot handle preparing a full meal, but can pop a freezer meal in the oven or microwave. 30 day Gourmet has allowed me to simplify and de-stress my lifestyle--priceless!

Read this reviews before You buy...
"the freeser cooking manual from 30 day gourmet; a month of meals made easy ", I like this book the best out of all of the freezer books because everything you need is in it. They make it easy so if you want you can easily incorporate your own meals if you like. There is really great quick reference guides too that the other books do not have. I would recomment this above all other books.
"Glad I finally purchased this", I was apprehensive to purchase this book for a very long time because I thought of it more as a recipe "cook book". There are a number of recipes on the 30 Day Gourmet website and I figured "what do I need the book for?" I have to say that the recipes included are not what the book is really for, although many people will find them very helpful. This book is a how to organize meal planning, period. And it is awesome in that regard. It helps with shopping lists, menu planning, organizing a cooking day; all of which I needed desperately! I have 6 kids, I home school, I take classes, so I am busy. I was going broke from yet another "I am tired tonight, let's just order pizza..." or on the flip side I was getting exhausted from planning my whole day around what to do for dinner.I actually did not use many recipes from this book, but adjusted many of my own for this method. However, many of the reviews criticized the recipes for being unhealthy or too la femme cuisine, but they are all kid-friendly, nutritious and fat content is always adjustable (skim milk, egg beaters, less salt etc...)
"great starter book, but there are otheres that are better", This is a great strater cookbook in general. It has a lot of usefull charts and general guides. And if your just starting to cook, the recipies are simple. Thats where it goes worng. Too simple. For my taste, I like a little kick in what I eat. Dont let this be your only coookbook.
"Great recipes, hope this brings convenience in my life", Bought this along with "Cooking Among Friends" with the hopes of dong some bulk cooking and socializing with my girlfriends. I think these books are perfect for what I have in mind.
"Wonderful book to get started in Freezer Cooking", This book isn't just about the recipes. It really teaches you then how-to's involved in freezer cooking. By reading the book through and then studying the recipes, you can learn to modify almost any recipe to be used by their method.
I'm sold on 30 Day Gourmet!
