"Violin Book"
The book was for my wife. She seems to like it. I know nothing about violins, but the book seems good.

"Violin Beginner"
This is an excellent book for the violin beginner. It teaches the very basics of violin playing.

"Good for Self-teachers who can read notes"
This is a good book to have if you can already read notes and are good at self-teaching. I have never played the violin before but have already learned five different songs from this book. It doesn't explain things as well as I would like; but, I guess, that's what a teacher is for. I did like it though and recommend it for beginners.

"Wonderful way to learn"
I knew nothing about how to play the violin. I am 47. I had a beginners book from where I bought the violin and tried to use it to learn while waiting for an opening to have lessons. That book did not explain things well. I ordered The ABCs of violin for the Absolute Beginner and the DVD and began playing with the two immediately. The dog no longer howls when I practice :o). My family says I sound really good and in pitch with the songs as I play along with the instructor on the DVD. It really helps to see just how she is playing each part. I just ordered the CD also so that I can play more songs in the book with "how it's supposed to sound". The DVD only has three songs from book 1 and other songs from the next four books so it's worth buying as she demonstrates the different techniques of playing. Playing with the DVD is so helpful and encouraging. I have only gotten two formal lessons from the shop now as I'm still waiting for a regular lesson time. It's been three months since I bought the violin there. Each time the teacher is really surprised at how much I've learned in between the two times she's seen me. She says I am progressing faster than the average beginner. I am thrilled and very motivated now to keep learning from this method. I may never go in for a regular lesson time and I'm saving tons of money too! (I don't use the dots she says to put on the violin for finger placement and it's working just fine.) Also, it' s worth buying an electronic tuner. Forget trying to tune it yourself unless you're a master musician!

"A beginner's take on a beginner's book"
Things I like: easy to read and understand, progresses in logical manner, new things introduced quickly but not overwhelming.

Things I didn't like: Proper holding and playing positions only shown in one small, poorly illustrated picture; you have to buy the $19.99 dvd to have any audio to gauge your performance or for more visualization of proper techniques.

My suggestion: I would look for another book if I had it to do over again. Preferably one with an included cd or dvd and some better illustrations. These are things this book really should have had for the price.

""Absolute Beginner" is a Misnomer", I was very disappointed in this book. The title ("The ABC's of Violin for the Absolute Beginner") really should have been something like "The Beginner's Violin Class Primer" and/or come packaged as a set with the CD/DVD.

I am an absolute beginner at age 37 and was expecting a little more instruction about how to hold the violin and other basics. There was nothing in the Amazon "blub" about needing to purchase the separate DVD or Audio CD. I'm not expecting to become a 1st chair concert violinist at my age....I just wanted to learn a little about the violin and we live in a rural area where violin teachers are about as plentiful as hen's teeth.

This really seems to be a book for students who have access to a violin teacher. The lessons also seem to move very quickly. So far I prefer the "Learn to Play the Violin" by Frank Cappelli that I got from our local library. The Cappelli book at least has photos and descriptions of how to hold the violin and bow (it's not great, but it helps) and has more exercises on learning to play the correct strings...which isn't easy at first! I'll keep the "ABC" book for the songs, which I know I'll enjoy when I become a little more proficent.

Good luck to you all!

"lacking in some basics", This book is really no good without also buying the DVD and CD. The book does NOT give any information about placement of the bridge (searched the web an I think it should be by the notches in the F holes, low end by E string) or how to tune or use rosin. The DVD gives some information about tuning and a little about finger placement. I don't have the CD, but think it is probably necessary so you can learn where to place your fingers to get the sound right.

Edit: Well, I bought the CD and it does not have any commentary, or announcement of the song or enough pause to follow along. So I would downgrade this series to a 1 star. There are better choices. I feel like I really wasted the money, especially on the CD.

"Something you should know...", I've never played violin. I have a cheap one and just wanted to mess around and this book seemed like a good way to get started. There is a companion DVD that does not come with the book and unless you know something about playing the violin already, you need the DVD. They should either bundle the DVD with the book or stress that the DVD is required if you are really an "Absolute Beginner".

"Great book for a new violin player", I purchased this for my wife and she loves it. It is a nice violin starter guide with a great assortment of songs and instruction. I was very pleased with the incredibly fast shipping!!! Thanks! I'd highly recommend this item!!!

"Great for the absolute adult beginner!", I am 30 years old and never touched a violin in my life, but had always wanted to learn how to play. I ordered this book, along with her DVD, and have learned a lot! The ABCs of Violin for the Absolute Beginner - DVD The book teaches basic note reading, as well as warm ups and short songs. The DVD helps with knowing the parts of the violin, proper handling, and tuning. I recommend this book, but also some sort of video accompaniment. Youtube has a lot of free videos on violin basics, as well.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Perfect for my 10 y/o", We tried another video that started out assuming too much.
This book/video combination is perfect. We are in an isolated area without access to a violin teacher, and my 10 y/o dd is blasting through this book like a house on fire, mostly self-teaching. And we can stand being in the same room with her after only 2 weeks!

"Violin Book", The book makes the beginning steps of learning the violin amazingly easy, very easy to follow. Excellent!!!!

"A couple of drawbacks, but a very good choice", I purchased this book and the accompanying DVD based on the reviews I read here. The book has been extremely helpful in conjunction with the DVD, especially since after over 30 years of not playing, I am now back at the beginner level. I would like to emphasize that the DVD is almost a necessity to the book, your lessons will be much easier if you have both. Definitely with the investment.

I do have a couple of comments regarding the DVD.

Tuning:
The pitch pipe used on the DVD by Ms. Rhoda to tune the violin strings was not helpful to me at all. In fact, it was much, much more helpful to hear the sounds of the strings as they were being plucked and how the string should sound when tuned. You do not get that with the pitch pipe Ms. Rhoda used. It was impossible for me to tune using the sound of the pitch pipe and as a result, I had to replay (at least 7 times) the extremely short section where Ms. Rhoda is tuning the strings by plucking, to tune my violin properly. The emphasis for violin tuning should have been placed on hearing the strings (while plucking) as they are tuned, not just using a pitch pipe OR equal emphasis given to both.

Holding the Bow:
For me, in holding the bow, I found that if I held the bow hairs flat against the strings while playing, more often than not, I would play two strings at the same time (unintentionally). However, while watching the DVD, I noticed that Ms. Rhoda seemed to hold her bow so that the edge of the bow hairs were in contact with each string while playing, not the flat side. I tried it and I'm able to play one string at a time, which is what I wanted. I've also seen fiddlers/violinists play using the edge of the bow hairs, and it seems to work for me. However, this was not referenced on the DVD.

Overall, after reading reviews for some of the other beginning lesson books, I feel this was the best choice, but because of the above drawbacks to the DVD, I only gave it three stars.

"It is not book for absolute beginner, far from it", I myself recently started to study violin at ripe age of 37. I can see how this book may enhance my ability to play it. But, and this is big but, I took already 4 private lessons from professional violin teacher and I am still taking it, and not about to drop them very soon. You have to know how to hold bow, you should know how to place it correctly on strings, how to hold violin (different people hold it differently, but there's totally wrong way to hold it), you must know how to place your fingers on fingerboard, how to hold your palm under it. This book doesn't say anything about it. People you need teacher who can show you by example placing your elbow, fingers, in right position. This is not playing harmonica, or strumming easy chords on guitar, or even whistle on recorder (and I can play more or less on all those musical instruments). This is The VIOLIN. And this is not the book for absolute beginner. Let someone to show you how to start handle it correctly.

"Written for beginner musicians by a natural musician", I love this book, I'm new to the violin and I loved it. It is truly for the beginner, [to the violin] but I understand how some people can get confused. This book is brilliant at instructing someone how to learn the violin, but it's written by someone with a musical inclination, and being read by some people who don't. If you have no idea how to read music, I suggest you purchase a supplemental music theory book. If you don't know how to hold a violin merely from looking at it, I don't know if you are the best candidate for playing one. Sorry, it's just the truth. Brilliant book though.
