Others say...
"well written, easy to understand for those interested" Read many other theory books and this is the best one so far. I am a guitar player and has really connected a lot of concepts for me.
"Its ok." Its an ok book but I wish it had more worksheet type stuff in it. Music theory isn't hard you just have to work a whole lot of it like math practice makes perfect. The book is easy to read and clear. I feel that I am finally starting to understand music now, it's a good buy.
"Good explanation of music theory concepts" I recommend this for my students (especially adult students) or parents of students who are interested in the whys of music theory. When I was learning music, teachers just told you to memorize -- no one took the time to explain why. This book explains a lot of whys. Although some of the jokes are not funny and pictures are ... goofy, it's a pretty good, straight forward book on theory. The thing about music theory is understanding concepts and being able to use them are two different things. If you want to understand concepts, this is a good book. Remember, though, you might need a pencil and paper (theory exercise book) to make the concepts real to you. I always have my students use a workbook. This may be an excellent supplemental book for students who want an overview and/or have a more detailed explanation of theory concepts.
"Very Well Written" O.K. so maybe the cartoons are kinda cheesy, but this is hands down the clearest, best written theory book I have read.
I'm no theory expert, but I've looked over a couple college level texts as well as intro theory books/websites and this book is very comprehensive without overwhelming the reader with academic music pedagogy. The tone is friendly rather than pedantic and makes the subject very accessible even to the complete beginner.
"Edly's Music Theory for Practical People" A must-have for musicians who know a little about music and would like to know more to better master their instrument. Great info on scales, modes, chord structure, relative minors and majors, and tips for improvising. Indispensable for ignorant guitar players who don't know why they do what they do!

What our customer's say!
"Great for Jammers, and those intimidated by Jazz!", Like many a piano player, I learned to play by imitation, that is, imitating what my piano teacher taught me to do as a 9-year old. Ten years later, in my first `college band', I finally learned how to improvise and actually create music by taking a Jazz improvisation class. If you have time to take a class, do it...if not, buy this book. Perhaps this would be a bit complex for the complete novice, but if you're like me, (a person `classically trained' with little knowledge of how music is actually made) then this book is great.
If you're a pop composer and always wondering why you go from C to A-minor, to F, to G, then back to C, this ACTUALLY explains it! Even better, it explains what other chords you can play to make your progressions more interesting. Heck, you may even write a Jazz tune while you're at it.
A definite thumbs up.
Not 5 Star... -A CD would be nice to accompany the various voicings of scales, etc -Should have more variety of example songs besides `old susana' -Could have gone deeper into music history, other than simply stating "most music is composed of the I, IV, and V chords."
"I must be a Practical Person...", Studied music theory over the years and am finding this book very helpful in pulling it all together for me.
"Don't try This at Home", Ed Roseman has written a charming book, but has provided the reader with an inadequate explanation of its subject matter. I had to ask my trumpet instructor more than once to explain what Mr. Roseman failed to provide in the way of information about the concepts presented here. The student either has to guess or find the information elsewhere in order to avoid getting lost. I definitely do not recommend this book for anyone new to the subject of music theory unless they have access to someone well versed on the subject, such as a music teacher.
"A Great Buy !", This takes most of the information in the "much thicker and formal" Music Theory books and condenses to something manageable, easy to understand, easy to read AND easy to learn. A good book for any musician to own !
"Painless Music Theory", An interesting, logical, and understandable approach to Music Theory. Filled with enough examples, insights, and relationships to round out your unterstanding.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"Out of my league", I read all 13 reviews on this book and felt that this was the book I was looking for. Well, I couldn't have been more wrong! I've been playing the tenor sax with a teacher for about five years and, if I may blow my own horn, I'm no slouch in the brains department. By the time I got to page 21 I knew I was was out of my league. He starts talking about major/minor diatonic scales and thirds and sixths, stacked triads and an assortment of other things that he assumes you already know. I even went back and reread the book from page one figuring I must have missed something. Maybe I'm wrong but I feel you need a pretty well rounded backround in music theory before you even pick up this book on music theory. David Harp's "Music Theory Made Easy" was an excellent (and short) book that imparted a whole lot more info to me. Good luck.
"Truly is the best!", My daughter was struggling with her High School Music Theory class. This book has done wonders. Being a guitarist she also enjoyed the comment on the back cover "..even a guitarist could understand". Highly recommended.
"Music Theory Made Fun", This book is very clear, concise and well organized. The material is presented in an easily understood format, with ample amounts of humor and encouragement throughout. I highly recommend this book to anyone aspiring to learn the fundemental elements of music theory while having fun doing it.
"Edly's Music Theory for Practical People", This is a great book. It is easy to read and understand what is being said. It has helped me out so much with my understanding of music. Very fun to read and learn, also has some great art work in it. There is tons of usefull information, with qustions and answers to work with. Would recommend it to any one, with the basic music theory looking to expand.
"THIS is how theory should be presented!", I have tackled theory using several books; some quite brief and some that are many volumes. I have studied piano, guitar, and voice. (I don't claim to be a master of any of them, but I give it a good try.) While I had a fairly good understanding of BASIC theory before beginning Edly's book, his presentation and content really cleared up some of the "rough spots" in my understanding of some concepts.
If you are a musician or a wannabe, and you want a simple exposure to the basics, this should be your first purchase. Frankly, I don't think it will be your last and ONLY purchase of theory material. However, I have never seen a better place to start. Be prepared to really think about what you are reading and truly study it and it will pay off.
If you are just getting started studying theory, or some of the fundamental concepts are not quite clear, BUY THIS BOOK!
