"Parents: READ this before you make a decision", We own several SAT vocab books, and this is the first one I've ever seen that uses references that I feel are inappropriate and/or unneccesary for teenagers. I believe there are intelligent ways an author can capture the attention of teens without having to relate to sex. Make your own judgements based on your kids, but as minor examples: For the word NEGLIGENT: The hint is to picture a wife who "accidentally" wears a negligee in front of her husband's boss. CONSUMMATE: The hint is to picture a black widow spider "They shake, consumating the deal, and have sex, consumating the mating ritual." I don't think in most biology books they call spider reproduction as having sex. Just seems immature by the authors. These are just 2 examples I saw in less than 5 minutes, and decided to look no further. This is the first return I've EVER made to Amazon.

"Long-term Study Aid Only", My mother bought this book for me when I was in 7th grade and spent time going over words with me every day. I was able to finish it before I entered high school (I am currently a sophomore) and I still remember all of the words. I haven't taken the SAT yet, but I couldn't imagine using this book to study right before it. So I recommend that you purchase a different book if you are in a hurry because this book takes investing of time and energy.

"From the word to a mental image to the definition", This book takes a word and what you might think of just by looking at it, adds a visual image, and then ties that image to the real definition. This is my favorite way to learn vocabulary words because it's not rote memorization, it's an understanding of the word and how it's used. There are pronunciation hints too so when you've learned the words, you can use them in your everyday speech.

"This book really helped my son...", My son ended up having a SAT verbal score in the 98 percentile because of this book; I really highly recommend it to everyone. He studies hard and memorized each word well!

"I still remember words from sixth grade!", When I was in sixth grade, my English teacher used this book to teach us vocabulary. It had fun cartoons and a really great tone, but most importantly, it worked. Each word was turned into what it sounded like. For example, the word "volatile" became "volley tile." The cartoon would have a drawing of people playing a game of a new sport called volley tile, which was like volleyball, except instead of a ball, there was a tile that could blow up at any time, demonstrating the definition of the word. This was in sixth grade, people. I don't even remember my teacher's name in the sixth grade, but I do remember the definition of volatile, embellishment, penchant, and the list goes on. This book's devices are incredible and really fun, and they truly make learning vocabulary painless, I promise.

"Great tool ", I am an AVID teacher and am preparing my students for the SAT. After I started using this book my students now think that learning Vocab is fun! When have you ever heard a high school student say that vocab is fun? I highly recommend this book!

"Practically Painless Learning", I found this slightly unorthodox way of learning vocabulary words to be entertaining and practically painless. My children (8th and 5th graders)and their Gifted and Talented Program teachers have been enthusiastic about using the book. I especially appreciate the author's humorous treatment of this compilation of words likely to be tested, and the fact that he has updated the book periodically to keep pace with changes in the SAT. I would recommend it for any student-in school or not- interested in expanding his or her vocabulary.

"Great for homeschoolers", When my daughter was in the 10th. grade, she was homeschooled.
We purchased a set of curriculum, which of course, included
English. I wasn't satisfied with the vocabulary portion of it,
so I used this book. I gave her 10 new words each week and we
both had so much fun learning them! The illustrations are great
and they really do help you to remember them. Every week when
tested, my daughter always got 100% correct. A few years later,
my son was homeschooled for the 7th. grade. Out came the book
again! I also use it to look up words, before reaching for a
dictionary. Having a good vocabulary (and using the words you
know correctly) is very important and I would recommend this
book for everyone.
