"Rod Rules!!!"
I can't say enough about Rod! Great book, Great analogies, Great Jokes! His humor, and teaching talent is bar none! BUY ALL OF HIS BOOKS, you will not regret it

"A good light take on a heavy subject"
I first bought this book for my son, when he was working on his private. I like the offbeat style of humor and facts. I recently bought this book to help me get current again. I still like the style, but it might be off putting for other matter of fact types. BTW, I have a private SEL license already, and 35 years as an aerospace engineer. So how planes fly is not what I am worried about. Air space regulations are important to me, same with magnetic compass, and other instrumentation strangeness.
I just like its style. GO FLY!!!!

"The "humor" just doesn't fly"
I fully realize that I cannot honestly give an accurate review of the book's content, since I didn't get past the first twenty or so pages; but for me the constant goofball humor was just way too distracting. I found myself annoyed more often than informed, and it became unreadable. Too bad I started underlining or I would have offered it up for sale. This guy may indeed know his stuff, but the way the information is presented is rather juvenile. If corny jokes help you learn, then by all means buy this book. But be warned!

"Entertaining Read"
The author's use of humor definitely helps keep even the driest material interesting. It does get to be a bit much by the end. But, I did get to the end. I'm not sure that I would have otherwise.

"Want to Learn to Fly? Read This Book first, and then Stick and Rudder"
At more than 500 pages, and with wonderful charts, diagrams, and down-to-earth explanations, Rod Machado's Private Pilot Handbook really helped some of the otherwise-boring facts "click" into place. Yes, his humor is a bit juvenile but the depth of information and the crystal-clear way he explains things is worth the occasional distraction.

An example: VOR navigation. I'd read and reread the textbook information and watch my computer-based, self-study course, but Machado's explanation was the best. He simply has a knack for getting facts and procedures down into very understandable language.

Another reviewer recommended Stick and Rudder. I'd also recommend S&R for the mechanics of flying the airplane. It's the next best thing to being in the cockpit. It was written in the 1940s, but is still very current and very readable. I have my copy beside my reading chair all the time--along with Machado's book.

Machado's book will serve as a reference for a long time to come.

"Great Companion to the giant Jeppesen Book o' Flying", I started learning to fly at a Part 61 flying school in July of 2007, and was presented with the Private Pilot Student kit that includes the "Guided Flight Discovery" tome. While that book and the accompanying workbook was my main source (besides my instructor) of information, I was still left feeling very, very stupid about some things, particularly the basics of airspace, aircraft systems, and translating or visualizing the three-dimensional world of the VOR and ADF on a two-dimensional rendering for the purposes of the "written exam."

That issue with the VOR/ADF proved to be the most frustrating, because while that technology is on its way out, it still features on the written test, and while I can track a VOR and know where I am in relation to a station when I'm in the air, I was perplexed as to how to demonstrate that in the artificial environment of the written exam. Machado includes a seriously useful trick for this, in the Private Pilot Handbook.

This is just one example of how this book meshes very well with the Jeppesen book. There's nothing wrong with the way the Jeppesen book teaches flying, and this book is not inherently better, but if you just aren't getting it from a "standard" textbook on flying, Machado's explanations, illustrations, and examples might be the thing you need to flip the switch so you can have your "aha" moment of enlightenment.

Machado has taken some knocks for his humor. In fact, my checkride examiner has met Machado and been to some of his seminars in person, and the assessment was "sometimes, he thinks he's funnier than he is," and from my experience with Machado's work, perhaps that's not an unfair assessment. Sometimes the humor does wear a little thin, but in my opinion, that is far outweighed by the knowledge you can get from reading this book. Machado has been a flight instructor and pilot for a long time, he's seen pretty much everything, and can relate his experience in a human way, in a humorous way. And during my written, oral, and practical exams, the very humor I got a little impatient with when I was studying for said exams, was what would make me remember the information when I needed it.

"Great details, except for ...", I am currently hard at work on my Private Pilot Certificate and immersed in ground school. I purchased this Machado book (and his IFR book) and agree with everyone else that it is an excellent reference, very detailed and well organized. But I also found, like many of the other reviewers, that the "humor" was a little overboard. Rod's writing style and the illustrations I found to be a little irritating. I am sure others feel the level of humor and the cartoons are just perfect, but I thought it is a little over-done.

"Never Too Old To Learn", At 60-plus years young, I still find learning new things or new ways to understand those that I've already learned to be fun and exciting. I am currently reading a great knowledge builder of a book. Rod Machado's Private Pilot Handbook is exactly the Ultimate guidebook to the world of aviation as seen through the eyes of the Private Pilot.
I got my ticket to fly general aviation aircraft (Visual Flight Rules, only) back in 1984. I've always had a yearning for more information, believing that it could only be a help to me as I progress as an older pilot. The book is filled with handy notes, lots of pictures showing everything you ever wanted to know and more. Even though I haven't quite finished reading the book cover-to-cover, I still find myself jumping around throughout this Pilot's Bible of excellent knowledge of aspects that every pilot should know.
Many years ago when I first started training to be a general aviation pilot, I attended a Ground School course that brought me up to speed so-to-speak, which made the transition into the cockpit easier. This book keeps that transition up-to-date. Before most every flight I will browse through this book just as a reminder that I'm never too old to forget something and never too old to remind myself of all that there is to this thing called flying. I recommend this book as a reference manual to your flight bag!

"Good book", This product is same as described in purchase. Delivery was very quickly and good conditions. I recommend this product and provider. Sincerely. Jose Pena

"Great gift!", Was a Christmas present for my father, he is going to get his pilot's licence and I thought it would be a good gift. I never would have imagined how much he loves this book. Thank you!

"Valuable but irritating", This is one of the most detailed and thorough books you can lay your hands on to understand the plethora of details, procedures, rules and skills involved in the increasingly complex world of general aviation. I recommend it highly as a source of information A to Z on flying. Another very nice thing about this handbook is that it is very rich in diagrams, pictures, schematics etc. This makes understanding and conceptualizing the subject matter much easier.

What this book does not do well, and in all fairness, is not something that it purports to do, is to teach you the art of flying. For that, there is no book better than "Stick and Rudder" by Wolfgang Langewiesche.

Be forewarned about one somewhat irritating aspect of this book - the authors resort to humor - and, at least for me, the humor is more irritating than funny. There is too much of it, in all the wrong places, and the jokes are juvenile and silly. For that, I take away a star. But if you can overlook that, it's a excellent buy.

"Helpful in preparation for oral portion of checkride", I have used mostly Gleim books and software up to this point in preparing for the FAA written test(I passed with a 95%)and my flight training. I am almost at the point of taking my PPL checkride and feel that further review is necessary but could not seem to convince myself to re-read my old books so purchased this. I am glad I have, finding it readable and informative. The same information delivered in a different manner seems to aid my understanding. I find most of the jokes pretty lame, but they do serve well in making the text more readable. I find the stories in the sidebars more effectively educate and entertain, and make me hope I never become the subject of one!! Highly recommended reading.

"Pass your written!!", Some folks think that Rod is to hokey for a serious study of aviation and the private pilot written exam. With his text, the workbook helped me pass my written.

"Greatest manual ever!!!!", This Private pilot handbook is a great buy. Ron Machado's personallity is still inside of the book written on the pages! It's a nice down to earth way of learning to get your pilots license.

"Very informative", My friend was very pleased with her present; she said it helped her to clarify all the questions she had about taking her pilot exam.
