"Excellent"
This is an excellent source book for any new writers. I highly recommend this and the other books in the Writers Digest Elements of Fiction Writing series.

"Utterly Useless"
This is the worst of the Elements of Fiction book series that I've read. Instead of using examples from classic works of fiction, like the other books in the series, Wood comes up with her own examples, which are poorly written and often obscure the topics she's trying to cover. Check out Self-Editing for Fiction Writers by Browne & King instead, which has a much better chapter on Showing vs. Telling. Also check out How to Write a Damn Good Novel by James N. Frey, which has better descriptions on how to write scenes vs. narration.

"Fluffy and elevated - not for writers with a story to tell"
Nothing in this book was usable for me. Okay, very little. If I was trying to write the next _Ethan Frome_, then this book would be perfect. Instead I write sci-fi and fantasy. I was looking for tips to improve my description of things; this book recommends describing different things. Too much emphasis on metaphor (which is a wonderful tool but a tad obvious). If you want to write in a way people might actually communicate, this book might be a waste of your time. HOWEVER, poets and pure-literary writers might find it more useful than I did.

"Description"
**Summary: Description is a great book for the aspiring author who has already studied Stein on Writing or Self-Editing for Fiction Writers

I've read many books on writing novels, books that pound in messages like show-don't-tell and avoid flashbacks like the plague. Stein on Writing and Self-Editing for Fiction Writers were great books for me when I was writing my first manuscript - and I still refer to them regularly - but now I want to advance my writing further.

Description is great for that. Instead of saying "Show-don't-tell," description teaches methods for creating a balance between showing and telling. While Wood doesn't recommend using flashbacks, like most other books, she provides tools to make flashbacks more seamless. I like her balanced approach, and I consider this a great book for the slightly more advanced author.

I only gave this book four stars because I didn't think that the examples she used were the epitome of great writing, but her examples always got her point across.

"If It Was Good Enough For Mickey Spillane, How About You."
Mickey Spillane follwed a somewhat`suspect--by modern day standards anyway--formula for setting scenes. In all his Mike Hammer novels he always devoted about a page at or near the beginning of each chapter to charging the atmosphere with description of the ace private eye's surroundings. Then, whammo! From there his stories always took off in a rat-a-tat-tat fashion for the rest of the chapter, with hardly a further hint of settings detail. A dubious practice? I wonder. His enormous sales figures would suggest that this approach worked well. ##### Sadly, there always seems to be a big segment of the novel-authorship community who write description in a condescending way, as if their audience is exclusively the typical "Book Groupie"--you know, the quiet, lonely dork who never gets invited to parties and has nothing to say except, "I told you so," and, "Have you read...?" This is why, it seems to me, that so many writers feel they have to drench the reader with movie scene after movie scene after movie scene, depriving the imagination a chance to roam--to make up for some kind of perceived "void" in the Groupie's life. ##### It's because of this "over-reach" that one of the parts of Monica Wood's Description I liked best was the emphasis on the big variety of clever, but restricted, uses of description. I stronly believe in the Plot Development Commandment IX: Thou Shalt Not Over-Describe, and was glad to see this viewpoint validated by Monica Wood.

What our customer's say!

"Description", I highly recommend this book if you are writing your first novel. Contains valuable, insightful information.

"Not Terrible, Not Great", This it one of those books that I can neither thing of a real good reason to recommend it, nor can I think of a good reason to tell people to avoid it, so it gets three stars. Monica Wood covers the topic fairly well and has some good suggestions, but there isn't much unique matterial in the book. As I read, I found myself skipping sections of the book and I don't feel that I miss anything by doing so. She has some different views about some things than other authors, most notably the "show, don't tell" rule. But few authors agree on that rule. She seems to have more of a character driven approach to writing, so if you do also then you may find her book more helpful than one written by someone with a plot based approach. The occassional jewels that are scattered throughout the book make it worth buying for many people, but others may find it difficult to read.

"Number one", The best writing book I ever read. This may sound strange, but I couldn't put this book down. It is filled with example after example on what bad descriptions vs. good and great descriptions look like and how to write them. I would highly recommend this book to any one who likes writing.

"WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE?", This is an excellent writing aid.

Here's why: If you want to know how to make a watch, most writing aid's only give you the correct time or make testimonials about the quality of specific watches. You never learn how to make a watch. This book details how to make watches with excellent examples of the significant steps in the process. And it illustrates how the right steps work, with examples of how other things dont work as well. Plus it provides examples of how hybrids sometimes work better for what you want.

The author is impressive because she knows what she professes, and knows how to make you competent too.

This book will make you happy.

"Very Effective", As a writer, I've always considered description to be my strong suit, so I read other books in this series before I picked up this one. I wish now that I'd read it first. Monica Wood clearly articulates the difference between strong description and weak description and provides so many examples that it is easy to see her point, and easy to make the leap in your mind and change your way of thinking about description. I realize now that although I've always been good with imagery, my images lacked purpose. I'm a photographer by nature. I've been busy presenting my readers with snapshots when I should have been painting art for them. My images were clear, vivid and real, but they told my reader little about the underlying structure of either my characters or my theme. My descriptions created texture, but didn't incite emotion or meaning. I looked at my manuscript and realized I've got 70,000 missed opportunities. So far, I've revised three scenes and already I know my characters better. The writing is tighter, the characters sharper. Those scenes pack so much punch now that I'm faced with the opposite problem I had before- how to let the story breathe for a bit between those scenes. Pacing is going to be a different challenge for me now.

"understandable education", This is my third book on writing. Having decided to study in my quest to write fiction and without formal universities available I settled on home study. As I read into her book I became extremely satisified with what I was learning. Her descriptions are simple and followed with good examples. I strongly recommend her book to all desiring to improve their intellectual understanding of creative writing.

"This is not THE ONE on this subject", This book is well organized, easy to read, and gives very good insight and techniques for a better description. But it isn't the best book on this subject because it is too short and ignores or touches lightly some parts of the descriptive projects.

Buy it only if you want a slightly look at description, for a deeper analysis and more serious aproach, try "Word Painting", wich is much better.

""A man thinking about death is not a story...", A man building his own coffin is," this is one of the examples of wisdom in Monica Wood's book. Much of this material is common sense, if you think about it, but Wood puts it into words that help us think through our own thoughts. She asks us to focus our descriptive style through character, and relate how the scenes and settings impact the characters or are how they are interpreted by the characters. Make the metaphors and adjectives character inspired, not author inspired.

She organizes her book around chapters that deal w/ Description in relation to Dialogue, Forward Motion, Point of View, ect, so this would be a handy resource to pull off the shelf if you are stuck in any given scene, and you want advice for better ways to convey the characters and to move the plot. She gives examples of good description and bad description, and if you're like me, you'll cringe reading the bad examples because they look so familair in my own writing. The only reason I don't give it five stars is I would have liked to have seen more descriptive examples from different genres, instead of incessant "modern-era Great American novel" type of prose. Some addenums on science fiction, fantasy, horror, mystery, historical fiction, would have helped.

"Great reference", This book is packed full of useful information on a wide variety of topics relating to description. There are lots of before/after examples illustrating how writing can be improved. Each chapter also contains a short summary of the advice covered and there is also a final chapter summarizing the book as a whole. Very well done.

"An Excellent Reference Guide for Writers, New and Old", This is one of those books that people don't really think they need, until they pick up a copy and start flipping through it. Description is one of the most fundamental things a writer has to do, yet so many people who write do it poorly.

Monica Wood takes the idea of description, and makes it an easy to use 'technique' in your writing. This is a necessary guide for all of us who like to write. The idea of show, don't tell, is pushed here, but not to the point of being obnoxious. Wood shows how to use all of the senses in your descriptions to make your reader feel as though he/she were there. That's key. 'A big, red house..' isn't description. ...a house the color of dried blood, with a roofline so tall that the clouds seemed to have to part to get around the peak..' now that's description!

I have a few reference, or technique books on my shelf, and this one is one that I open most often. I want to make sure my readers understand where they are and what they're seeing, smelling, and feeling in the story. This book teaches the reader how to do just that.
