"Regardless of Paradigm--a Must have", Although those who have dedicated themselves to the Healing power of Reiki may have various positions on this ancient healing technique, this book is well written and will inspire and engage all those interested in Reiki. I learned a great deal of her book and reflected on my own ideas.

"Good trainer's reference.", I have added this book to my others as a good reference for assembling Reiki training classes. As with all manuals of this type, the author presents the information from her perspective, based on her experience and expertise. The reader must take what works and leave the rest, which is fine. Stein is a fine author and instructor and I applaud her approach to opening the doors to Reiki. I found her negative references to male participation in this healing art unnecessary. It served to distract from her overall purpose and credibility of her text and was best left out of print.

"The Gold Standard!!!", Essential Reiki by Diane Stein has been the very top book on my required reading list for students for several years. I have purchased this book a few different times and have managed to pass it on to a scholarship student every time.

If you can only purchase ONE book on Reiki, this book is the one to get! The title says that it is a Complete Guide, and it truly is.

"It's a very well laid out book", this is an awesome book, it's simple, and understandable, and I am greatful that if I need a reference I can go through this book and find it, but thats pretty much all I use it for is a reference book.

"Mixed feelings", I have very mixed feelings regarding this "guide." I purchased it on the recommendation of a Reiki Master as this is the one she and many others were using to teach from these days. Having been attuned to Traditional Reiki I and II back in the late '80's/early'90's, I was a bit taken aback by the author's approach. While I find about 50% of the commentary provided within the text to be right on the money, I wholeheartedly disagree with the other 50%. Of particular concern were the author's frequent derogatory comments concerning the Traditional methodologies. Yes, the times they are a changin', but whatever happened to being careful not to throw out the baby with the bath water. I have a deep respect for the Traditional Reiki philosophies and believe that we at least need to preserve that respect. There is no way I will recommend this "guide" to my students when I begin teaching. I might make mention of it in passing, only to offer that other writers have differing viewpoints regarding the practice and teaching of Reiki today.
For a more Traditional approach, I might recommend that readers at least consider looking at the manual we were using at that time: "The Reiki Handbook," by Larry Arnold and Sandy Nevius.


"Essential Reiki: A Complete Guide to an Ancient Healing Art", The introductions alarmed me as the author complained of the cost and discrimination by "Gate keepers," the Reiki masters. They seemed to have "blown her off" and denied access to the master apprenticeship system because she refused to conform.

There is nothing the matter with the relationship in today's terms. The exchange of money for initiation basically helps Reiki keep its core strength through unity of human organization. It is how people temper their own ego to allow a system to change one's sense of health and be of benefit to others.

It is my understanding the "original" people who taught Reiki in the Usui system, did so to people who could not afford modern medicine. It was grass roots, but universal system of healing brought forth from Tibet. All peoples are welcome to the practice.

What concerned me about the tone of the author's was she was "destined to make it a free gift to all who asked," at conferences where mass initiations took place for people in line. It is not free, as you pay for the book, and I assume you pay her a great deal to attend her seminars. It costs because you make a commitment, whether it is in dollars, time, or trade. You do not "seize it" or "bully it" from people or ask for anything less than staying true to the system and Universal Light.

You do need to know the system and its symbols. I learned from a Master in a class and through many hours of practice. I have helped many people and myself with Reiki. It is an amazing system. When I bought the book, I did not know the author was not part of the Usui system.

In any case, I did not return it, and will keep it for personal reference, contrast and compare. I lend it out with caution, while pointing people to various sources to acquire information from the web or local practitioners to make their own informed decisions on its study.

There is no danger in using Reiki, whatsoever. Reiki seems to attract healers who are sincere. I believe the author is sincere. It is her tact that is hard to overcome for me.

"ESSENTIAL REIKI", I FOUND THIS BOOK TO BE AN EXCELLENT SOURCE OF INFORMATION ON ALL LEVELS AND ASPECTS OF REIKI. THIS WAS THE FIRST BOOK I READ ABOUT REIKI AND BECAME SO INTRIUGED THAT I FOUND A REIKI MASTER AND WAS ATUNED TO ALL THE REIKI LEVELS OVER THE YEAR TO BECOME A REIKI MASTER MYSELF. I HAVE SHARED THIS BOOK WITH MANY PEOPLE WHO BECAME INTERESTED IN REIKI AND THIS IS THE 4TH BOOK OF ESSENTIAL REIKI THAT I HAVE BOUGHT. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN REIKI - THIS IS A GREAT REFERENCE BOOK ON THE WHOLE SUBJECT.
