Others say...
"The Best---And I should know, I've tried them all." I started piano later in life. Oh well, I took about six months worth in the 3rd grade. But, I love music and I sing. No, I mean I really sing, like classical!! So, I read music. Of course, you still have to get it from your brain to your fingers so it was like starting from scratch. I am in the last book of this series and play rather well for a late bloomer. I began and went through the first book by myself----would have been much faster to have a teacher. Then I got smart and got a teacher, who also uses these books for ALL his adult students. I feel completely the opposite of the negative review. If you recognize all the tunes in the book, you will NEVER learn to count. Some recognizable pieces are fine, but most are not. This series gives you everything you need, including easy to learn theory. It advances through each book the way that it should. Just like I had to do to learn to read music for vocalizing. Stick with these books--find a teacher who will work with you and go for it. In a couple of years you will be amazed. And if you don't do that, in a couple of years you will be two years older and still not know how to play piano. Good luck!
"Great for beginners" When I first started taking piano lessons, this was the book my piano teacher and I worked on. The pieces are simple and boring, but yet demanding to the novice. Since it is an all in one book, you really get your money's worth. Playing the piano is not just about hitting keys, so one must learn some basics about chords and so forth. This book is a great primer.
I highly recommend this book.
"Great book, easy to read" I like this book, I started taking piano lessons at the age of 42, and I'm having a good time with it. The only thing is this book should come with a CD but mine didn't and I'm not sure why.
"Boring...but excellent primer" This is a pretty good book for the adult learning to play the piano. I didn't give it 5 stars because it's quite boring, but it serves the purpose. At our local small town university I was able to take a piano class for adults and the teacher allowed us to use our own choice of books. I'm not disappointed with my choice. My only regret is that they should have included a CD with it. Then again, my book is used - so the new book may include a CD.
"Learning the piano -- a difficult endeavor made easy!" I used to play the clarinet in middle school. Now I'm 18 and it's been quite some time since I've read sheet music. Playing guitar for six years literally ruined my ability to read the stuff, because I would always use tabs instead. But eventually I grew jaded with the guitar, and I decided to choose a new and fresh direction -- the piano!
This book is very well-written, and leaves no gaps. Within just a few days I found myself relearning all that I had forgotten from band class years before, and I've now reached the point where I know more than I did! And I haven't even finished the book yet!
Plus, it tests you on theory and technique. You get to fill in parts of the book, which really helps you get involved with what your learning.
One reviewer downrated this book because of the song choices, and its accompanying CD. I feel that this is in err. I believe the song choices are just as good as any. If the tunes were familiar, then they wouldn't be as challenging to learn. And as for the CD...I did notice that the piano parts are rather quiet, but I always thought this was because it was a play-along CD (which is what I use it as). It's as good as it needs to be.
Besides, the pieces get more interesting as you progress, some of the final pieces being "Greensleeves", "Scarborough Fair", "The Entertainer" and "Amazing Grace" (and written in a way so that each hand will be dually occupied). And by the end of the third book in the series, you'll be playing some of Beethoven's most popular pieces, like "Fur Elise" and "Moonlight Sonata"!
Also -- something that concerned me when I bought this book: do you need a full-fledged piano? The answer is...no!! A sizable keyboard will do you just fine. But, you just might find yourself looking to buy a real piano once you delve deeper into these lessons...because this series really does inspire and nurture a great love for this amazing instrument.
If you're looking to learn the piano and can't afford a teacher, don't have time for one, or you just learn better on your own -- this is a must-have aid to your learning.
Good luck, and I wish you well in your learning!! :)

What our customer's say!
"A great way to learn! ", The best things about this book are, first, it's fast paced; the lessons and pieces focus on specific skills and positions. They don't linger for too long on just playing the melody. They get you playing harmonies and chords, get you into different postions within the first few pages. It is up to you to decide when you're ready to move on. There's also curt, but thorough explanations so that you're not left in the dark about why such-and-such is done such-and-such way, or what the sharps and flat symbols mean next to the cleff symbol. Lastly, they don't make you play a whole bunch of goofy "child" songs that might turn off an older student from getting involved in this instructional book.
I wish I had this book years ago. I must encourage anyone who is picking this book up to buy a metronome as well. These are invaluable!
"One of the Best Tutorials for Piano Keyboard", I am totally impressed with the guide. It does not come with a CD but you don't need one, you merely need to follow the instructions in the book and practice, practice, practice.
It is well written and logically presently. It starts by getting you to relax your hands and yourself. By page 13, you are playing a bit of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and you know what the notes are. There is great information about the care and placement of your hands, Music theory is interwoven into the music lessons and they are not overwhelming. With practice (and that is what makes a great piano player) you will be able to understand the name of the notes, their placement for left and right handed playing, learn about and play all the chords, and learn some tips and tricks for remembering and playing songs.
If you can only afford one book to learn, this would be the one to start your musical journey.
"Accompaniment CD is not flawed, in fact it can be very useful if used correctly. Read carefully", Some reviews here say the CD is flawed because the recordings are not solo piano demonstrations and can be confusing for the learner. I do not agree with those reviews. Here is why; On each piece, the background accompaniment instruments are heard on the left channel of the recording. The piano part is demonstrated on the right channel. On many sound systems, balance between the left and right channels may be changed, either by adjusting a single "left/right balance control", or by adjusting the volume of the left and right speakers individually. These adjustments allow isolation of either the accompaniment instruments or the demonstration piano part, or modification of the blend between the two. Alternatively you can convert the each recording to MP3 (or other) formats and get a good media player where you can have a control over left/right volume channels.
"Not if you haven't learned yet", This is yet another self-teaching book that sits on my bookshelf unused. I looked at it when it arrived and was dismayed to find references to a teacher (not myself apparently) and an "accompanying" CD. Well, the book was expensive enough as it was; the need for more media and a live teacher pretty much dampened my enthusiasm. It also didn't help when I saw how much I was supposed to learn and that there more books in the series. I'm pretty much a loser as regards learning music theory or playing, I admit. Sp if you're like me, don¡t bother buying the book: buy a teacher. And if you're not like me, you don't need such a book.
"great refresher course", This series has been great for me. I took lessons as a child and was pretty good at some point, but after not playing for years, I wanted a refresher. I can see how it would move too fast for a beginner, but for me it's been great. It does a great job of teaching theory, which as a child, I didn't care much for.

"Excellent for Self Teaching", I am amazed how well this book has helped me to learn to play piano. I have bought three others but they are terrible by comparison and now I just use this one. I did not buy the music disk to go with it. I just use the book and do the practices and have used some on-line instruction to suppliment. I am not taking any instruction yet and the book has me playing with both hands and I am not even half way through. I really recommend it.
"Good for beginners if you are comfortable with a Middle C approach", This book is good for adult beginners in that it starts them playing songs right away. It uses a Middle C approach, however, which I do not care for as I think it makes it more difficult to play later on. I teach piano for all ages and I've found that when I use the Music Tree series (for adults and children) my students have an easy time reading music. When they use a Middle C approach, they associate the fingering with note names and have a hard time telling me that the 2nd space in treble clef is an A (and so on). Re-learning to read music is always frustrating. That being said, I do think adults have an easier time breaking this habit, so I would not say not to purchase this book. There is also theory in it, which is a plus. I would say it is good, not great.
"A good experience", With a teacher or without one its great for serious students. Very clear and precise.
"Great text but lousy CD", I am a new piano player and have found this to be an excellent book for teaching the basics of music theory and getting me to the point where I could play pieces such as Greensleeves and Scarborough Fair that actually sound quite good. The down side is the CD - as others have said the CD is a big disappointment and a waste of money. I expected to hear a single piano instrument but the piano is accompanied by other instruments and, having an untrained ear, I can not pick out the piano form the rest and therefore found the CD useless.
"Good source....", A good place to shop; well packaged, prompt, and the book came in perfect condition. I'd recommend this site to anyone....
