"Pitching In" Alchemy of Voice Dr. Morton as a speech therapist, writes in a layman's style approaching developing an interestint voice. His advice on finding your 'natural voice" as opposed to the 'habitual' voice compliments Stuart Pearson's book "The Alchemy of Voice."
It helps the voice teacher to show students how to find the best pitch for each individual. Although seriously treated in both books, students will have fun finding their own level of pitch.
"ICLS" I suffer from Spasmodic Dysphonia and after being told by my doctor that the only treatment available was to get Botox shots in my vocal chords every three months, being a singer, I looked for an alternative treatment and found this book. It has helped me to use my voice in such a way as to enable me to speak without my voice cracking much of the time. Surprisingly, this condition doesn't seem to affect the singing voice. If I remember to use the advice in this book, it works very well. I have sent it to many friends who also have vocal problems
"Absoluetely the best self-help book I've ever read!" Let me start off by saying that this book is a life-saver. When I say it is the best self-help book I've ever read, I mean because most self-help books are tempopary and sometimes lead you right to where you started but this book is very practical and offers permenant result. I have been abusing my voice throughout my life, and I see the reaction it had on people. People were avoiding me because I always wanted a commanding but ended with a harsh, nauseon, and unpleasant husk. At first I was skeptical it was ever possible to change one's voice and ever more skeptical when doing the extremely simple excercises, but...IT WORKS!!! Now I have a vibrant voice that is project deeply and loudly anywhere commanding the attention I always wanted (think of it as yelling deeply but without souding like yelling). Though it does take some practices until permeant; and for me it took a week. A must have for anybody wanting that extra success!
"Great tool that clears away the muck." I found this book really helpful. As an actor who does a lot of professional stage, I have had to spend time working on my voice over the years. Many books I find, for lack of a better term, too "groovy" for me (Linlater, Berry) or too complicated (Lessac). Here, Cooper deftly sweeps aside a lot of that clutter, corrects some simple misapprehensions about the use of the speaking voice, and presents a simple, elegant plan for improving. You can even "check" your work with a voice recorder to see if it's actually working. It may not be everything you need to really improve your voice (hence the 4 stars), but if I had to pick only one book to own, this would be it.
On the face of it, Cooper's advice may seem too easy. After all, the whole idea and the suggested lessons could probably fit on a single page. But this stuff works; so, the fact that it's simple shouldn't dissuade anyone from it's value. Other reviewers have noted Cooper's penchant for repetition, and that he tries too hard to sell his reader on the importance of a good speaking voice (presumably his reader's already sold else why would he have bought the book). But it's a short read anyway, so what's the big deal. And besides, if it was any thinner I wouldn't be able to find it on my shelves.
"Highly recommended..." If you want to change your voice (respectively be aware of how you speak) I can highly recommend this book. It's worth every penny!

What our customer's say!
"Overly wordy and a horrible typeface for this edition", This book is short, but it's still a lot longer than it needs to be. 90% of the book a collection of anecdotes that get quickly tiring.
Ironically, the publisher of this edition completely fails to follow the basic idea behind the book. The typeface is clunk and poorly spaced, and print quality is mediocre. I've never written a complaint about the production quality of a book before, but this one is seriously hard to read if print quality is important to you.
"Very useful information, sullied by marketing and 'filler'", I have mixed feelings about this book and this author. I'm sure that the information is very useful - an important education for all and therefore worth every cent. However, I do think the author was quite brave to publish an entire book around those snippets of information. Even though it's a slim volume it's still mostly 'filler'. However, don't necessarily let that detract from the value of the core information.
What does detract, though, is the way it comes across as quite a thinly disguised marketing exercise. Not that there's anything wrong with marketing per se - good on him for getting out there and getting wealthy - but it does grate.
(It must have worked though, because he's bold enough to ask for US$600/hr for consultations by phone!! In that sense buying the book is a very sensible compromise, because really, who of sound mind would pay that?!)
"Helps to improve and give info about your voice", I was looking for a book that helped me to improve my voice, and I found one. It is easy to read book, and it give you informations how to make your voice better.
It make you think about how importand your voice is, and that you should take better care of it, after all, there is so much about your voice, that reflects your personality. Your voice, is the identidy of your personality. I think people should think more about how they speak.
We are always using the voice image, instead of speaking the way we where born to speak, which by the way is the way we spoke after learning it from your closest people(parenst, teachers, friends) This book has exercises to find and use your natural voice, and the exercises are so simple..
The problem for me was, that in the beginning of the book, it was alot about exercises and information about the voice, which was great, but in the second half, it was to much about people who had some voice problems, and decided to use these simple exercises, to fix the problem. And it worked, even though many had tried very expensive ones, and complicated ones, these worked, and they are very simple, and not many.
Overall, Great book!
"could be shorter", after the first few chapters, its all pretty much the same thing, so I don't know why its so long.
"Not Quite Enough", Not quite enough. Not enough pages. Not enough exercises. Not enough real models of good voices (The book does not include a CD as is truly necessary for this sort of thing) Not enough visual illustration. Not enough good science (What does it really mean to say 'the voice should emerge from the upper two-thirds of the air passageway leading to your mouth?")
On the other hand, too much. Too much motivational schlock. Too much celebrity name dropping. Too much evidence of the hurriedness with which this book was put together.
I hope the author will remake the book, include a CD, explain the science better, and get rid of the pages devoted to hyping voice training. The fact the reader has spent money makes that superfluous. Let's try again!

Read this reviews before You buy..."Good advice, if you follow it confidently", First of all, you do not need to purchase and read all of Dr. Cooper's books. "Change Your Voice, Change Your Life" has the same useful material as "Stop Committing Voice Suicide" or "Winning With Your Voice." I know, since I have read all three. If you want to learn Dr. Cooper's methods for vocal improvement, read any one of them. Dr. Cooper provides encouragement and instruction to anyone who is dissatisfied with his or her voice. He encourages a respect for individuality. He urges us not to fret over whether our voices are "too high" or "too low." The voice that sounds best for you is your own "natural voice," which largely means a voice at your natural pitch. Dr. Cooper teaches you how to find your natural pitch. He also stresses the importance of proper breathing. For him, proper "breath support" is achieved through diaphragmatic breathing, as it is generally termed. A few years ago, when I first read "Change Your Voice, Change Your Life," I did all of the exercises to the best of my understanding. However, I never was sure that I was doing them correctly. I wished that Dr. Cooper was in the room with me, telling me whether I was doing the exercises properly, and correcting me if necessary. Eventually, I consulted with Dr. Cooper at his office in Los Angeles, for a considerable fee. As it turns out, I was doing the exercises correctly, all along. If you try the exercises, do so with confidence that you understand them, and that you are doing them correctly. The books' instructions are simple. Don't imagine that they are more difficult than they are. Here's some advice for men who think their natural pitch is "too high," and who lower the pitch so as to produce a sound they consider more masculine or authoritative. When you artificially speak at a pitch that is lower than your natural pitch, you lose resonance. The result is a voice that is thin or weak, a voice that makes you sound depressed or lifeless. You need to speak at your natural pitch, even if you feel sure that your natural pitch is "too high." By speaking at your natural pitch, you restore resonance to your voice. As a result, you sound more vital and confident. Paradoxically, a listener may mistake this sound for a lower pitch. In reality, the pitch is higher than your affected pitch, but the sound is so much better. Resonance makes all the difference.
"Wonderful", Horseness began to inflict my voice at its lower ranges a couple months ago, and it was surprisingly traumatic on me emotionally. It made me dread speaking! I remembered seeing Cooper plug this book years before.. and hoped my library would have a copy. It did. And the simple exercises laid out in this book took care of my problem. It proved to be an emotional life saver for me. And Cooper also has some great common sense advice on life in general in spots in here. He's a wonderful psychologist as well as a voice expert.
"Well witten book I highly recommend it, for" voice coaching"", DR. Morton Cooper, a pioneer in the study of speech and "voice doctor to the stars," has a plan that will put magic in your voice. With his simple, minutes-a-day program, DR. Cooper shows you how to develop your natural, dynamic voice-a voice that will influence others and enhance your self-image. Many who rely on their livelihood have successfully used DR. Cooper's revolutionary series of exercises: Henry Fonda, Joan Rivers, Kirk Douglas, Anne Bancroft, Jerome Hines, O.J.Simpson, Diahann Carroll, Dennis Weaver, and many others. Until know, communication's most important tool- the voice-has been studied primarily by actors, singers, and public speakers. Change your voice, change your life offers every one the opportunity to have a star-quality voice. This reviewed is from the paperback edition.
"Could be shorter", Morton Cooper explains about three things you can do to change your voice, which is all summed up in about three pages near the end. The rest of the book is filled with personal stories of some of his clients, many who are celebrities, and descriptions of the dangers of misusing your voice, and his thoughts on social causes of vocal abuse and misunderstandings of how to correctly use your voice. Maybe some people enjoy reading this. I think that about one fifth of the pages would have sufficed to contain all the practical information. Having said that, I was mindlessly practicing saying "Umm-hmmm" and some of the other words he recommends while reading the book. At the end, where he reviews the exercises, I was surprised to find that my voice did indeed feel and sound more resonant and stable with more volume control. If Mr. Cooper is responsible for this change which occurred in a few hours (if it occurred at all, and I'm not entirely convinced), then I feel I owe at least three stars instead of two. I admit he writes some interesting things, but I still say it could be much shorter.
"Don't buy this book", I read this book more than 10 years ago. It was not helpful at all. It described in detail a variety of problems that pationts of the author had experienced. However it did not offer one practical piece of advice for anyone who believed that they had a problem with their voice.
