Others say...
"The standard for Arabic students" The Hans-Wehr is the standard for Arabic-English dictionaries. The comprehensive manner in which it explains the word forms provides you with a fantastic picture of meaning.
Although it is laid-out in word root order, once you get a handle on how to approach it, it's English-style layout makes searching for words simple and relatively quick. The layout (root order) also provides you with an insight into where common meanings are derived from a single idea (i.e. the word for United comes from the root which also gives you the word for the number 1). If this doesn't suit you, maybe you should also have a dictionary such as Al-Mawrid.
A word of advice to anyone looking at the Hans-Wehr: Read the introduction. If you don't, you probably won't know what's going on at all and I suspect this is the problem that some have had (and subsequently rated the dictionary poorly). From this book, you will get context, grammatical info and even a degree of pronunciation guide.
Good luck!
"The problem of dictionary remains open also with this dict." This well known dictionary received much praising from many reviewers. And there is no doubt that it is a very valuable scholarly study indeed. But it is highly demanding from the user and one must be very carefull not to fool himself that the ever-lasting problem of looking up to an Arabic word shall be solved fore once and all by this one. Far from it! It is even very hard to say that Hans-Weher dict is better and easier than other root-based ones in this respect. I believe that there are so many Arabic words that even a highly educated native speaker of Arabic would no be able to pin-point in this dictionary. I am rather inclined to say that ,with this dictionary, the infamous vicious-circle of root recognition is so much pronounced for so many entities, unless you are a master of the language and know already that difficult word very well. But ,then, why to look for it at all, if you are not an Arabic scholar with some special purpose?. I forward my strong warnings to those who are at some middle level of their Arabic adventure: Don't belive to the story that Arabic is a highly rule based language, so that it is trivial to recognize roots, plurals etc easily. Yes rules are there in Arabic and so many of them. But with as much exceptions as you would (not) like! Involved in Arabic since fairly a long time and able to recognize so many words from my own native language (Turkish) which have borrowed so heavily from this comprehensive one, I ,more often than not, am bwildered in deciding which one has the upper hand; exceptions or rules! Once more don't deceive yourself into believing that the regular three consonant-root pattern is ,by far, the dominant one as told by the grammar books. Even it might be so on sheer statistical basis, those with weak consonants and the more and more troublesome "hemzet" as well as the brooken plurals are by far the most frequent ones in actual usage.
Surely for any one seriously concerned with Arabic an alphabetically ordered dictionary such as Al Mawrid (if you know a better one please let me know) is inevitable. As for a root based one as Hans-Weher, I would rather recommend to those who know French, Larousse's bilingual dictionary, at least as a supplement.
"Good but..." Everything everyone has said about this dictionary is basically true, but let me give a slightly different take on it. I was a DLI student too, and I can confirm that this dictionary which is issued on arrival to Arabic students does enjoy an almost religious following. However, most teachers there who are native speakers but not trained linguists or teachers, will tell you that they really didn't learn the root system as students in their native countries and many of them have a hard time using this dictionary themselves. One such teacher helped us order copies of the Mawrid alphabetically-arranged dictionary which we ended up using more. I think the Mawrid is a better choice for starters. To me, the Hans-Wehr dictionary is more of a tool for linguists or serious students. As a teacher, I actually think students should stay away from dictionaries the first year or two because they end up being a distraction or a crutch. If you decide to buy this as your first and only dictionary, just be very aware of how it's organized, and be ready to learn how to identify roots.
"Great Dictionary" Its the book recommended by my Arabic class, and for good reason. It is written in big type and has a huge vocabulary. It does not provide vowels, but it does give an english transliteration, which makes it easy to determine what the vowels are. Sorted by roots.
"A must-have for Students of Arabic Language" This dictionary is an essential resource for any one trying to learn the Arabic Language. Be it the Modern form of the language or the Classical one, Has-Wehr covers everything one needs to understand a word's usage in the Arabic Language.

What our customer's say!
"outstanding arabic dictionary", The Hans Wehr dictionary is a very good dictionary. It let's you know the root word and alphabets to help make it more understandable for the person to find the answers he/she needs.
"Covers an ample range of vocabulary", I have found this dictionary to be very complete as I have used it in my study of Classical Arabic. It includes obscure literary words as well as modern technical vocabulary.
The words are listed by root, which can be frustrating for beginners. However, anyone who intends to advance beyond the most rudimentary tourist Arabic will have to learn all about Arabic roots anyway. After even one semester with a good instructor, you should be able to find most roots with little difficulty. The changes that Arabic roots undergo in the course of conjugation and derivation are minimal by comparison with the changes one finds in other Semitic languages, such as Hebrew and Aramaic.
It would be nice if this book had an English-Arabic part. Since it does not, however, I recommend the Al-Mawrid : A Modern English-Arabic Dictionary 2002, which was recommended to me by my professor and which has proven very helpful. (Don't worry much about the year in the title. The publisher puts out a new edition each year, but the content doesn't change much if any. Look for the best deal on the web.)
The physical quality of this book is excellent. From what other reviewers say, an earlier edition was printed on cheap paper in India. The fourth edition, though, which I am reviewing, is well printed and bound. The type is a little small, but legible. I would recommend that the publisher consider adding a hardback edition in a larger size for easier reading.
All in all, I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is planning to study Arabic at the college level. It will prove very useful to you.
"A Great Arabic language learning tool to help you stay on course, as well as translation instrument", This dictionary is monumental in several ways. first, it is invaluable in that it seeks to provide the learner with the means to easily see how more complex words are built from the basic consonantal roots. second, the number and quality of the entries is excellent such that, regardless of what level the Arabic student is at, it won't disappoint. It certainly will be the only one you will ever need unless/until you are doing very specialized work. Thirdly, the fact that it is Arabic to English only is not disadvantageous if the learner approaches the language by learning to read basic stories and other writings once they have completed a basic, intermediate and advanced course and so have a strong foundation for thinking in the language, this dictionary will motivate one to continue learning Arabic through Arabic, where they need translation only to confirm their understanding of the meaning of specific words/phrases.
Moreover, it is one of those dictionaries that motivates you to read it, and it is easy to glean information from it so as to naturally build your vocabulary over time. it is designed by scholars to encourage the student who earnestly wants to learn the language rather than scaring them away.
And so, it is a must-have learning tool and resource (NOT JUST A REFERENCE!!!) for any serious student of Arabic, regardless of their level of specialty. it is essential for building THAT SOLID VOCABULARY one would need into college and graduate level studies.
The only negative thing (AND THIS BY NO MEANS TAKES AWAY ITS 'INVALUABLE/5STAR STATUS) about this 1130 page edition is that the font is no doubt on the small side, but that's what magnifying glasses are for. After living in Asia for a number of years, books are smaller and so one gets used to carrying around a pocket magnifier with them anyway.
Best wishes in your studies. this book will not only give you an intense jumpstart, but will help you stay motivated when you're 'down in the valleys'. Enjoy!!!
"An outdated, frustrating reference book.", I was very excited about getting my Wehr dictionary having read so many good reviews about it, and was very disappointed when I began to use it. First of all I got the small 3rd edition, which uses size 5.5 print, which is small enough to give one a headache when reading. Also, the print process is obviously insufficient, as many pages are not printed evenly, which, when combined with the already tiny type, makes them almost impossible to read. Also, some of the pages in the "ya" section were blank; not just extra pages added in, but missing words. As for the content, it is indeed comprehensive, but not very useful. Many modern terms are not included, and a large amount of the lexicon is extremely outdated and obscure. Very often I've found terms in my Awde & Smith Arabic Practical Dictionary which the Wehr won't have, which is surprising given the difference in number of words between the two. The simple fact is that this is an outdated book. I might recommend it for someone studying scholarly or Koranic Arabic, but for the modern student, I found it more frustrating than useful, and more trouble than it was worth.
"The fundamental Arabic learning tool", I can't say anything more than what has already been said by the majority of the other reviewers. Great resource for students of Arabic once past the basics.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"If you don't have an Arabic-English dictionary by now, this is the one to go for.", I'll keep this short and sweet... I'm another Arabic DLI graduate, and this is by far the best Arabic-to-English dictionary I've used. The "practical" dictionaries are alright, but aren't really anything special.
If you've been looking for an Arabic-to-English dictionary, and can't decide on which one to buy... buy this one.
The down side? Sometimes there are too many definitions for one word. However, through context and common Arabic knowledge, you should be able to figure out exactly what's being said/written without too much of a problem. Better to have extra definitions than not enough, right?
Again, I can't stress this enough... this is THE Arabic-to-English dictionary that should be with you on all your linguistic adventures. If you haven't stopped reading this review by now to buy it, now's the perfect time to. Right now. Go buy it!
"Great Dictionary, but with a few caveats...", I must agree with some of the reviews already in place here. This is a great Arabic dictionary. So far, every word I've had to find in Arabic has been in this dictionary.
A few caveats, though: This is only an Arabic-English dictionary. If you know an Arabic word, you can look it up to find the English translation. If you know the English word and want to translate it to Arabic, this isn't the right book. For that reason, I would have to say that this is not the only dictionary you will need for Arabic, especially if you are a native English-speaker. This book works better for an Arabic-speaker who wants to translate words into English.
Also, as with many Arabic dictionaries, this one omits the short vowels on the Arabic words. This means that when you look up an Arabic word, you will be able to determine its meaning, but not it's pronunciation.
In all, it's a great reference for looking up words in Arabic and translating them into English.
"Purchase Awde & Smith's "Arabic: Practical Dictionary" instead!", The book is not worth it's price. The words seem to be in some type of unique order, so in order to find a word one must search over about 10 pages. Does not list many of the words I have tried looking up. I purchased N. Awde & K. Smith's "Arabic: Practical Dictionary," which is Arabic to English AND English to Arabic, which Wehr's is not. Too expensive and isn't as useful as I thought it would be!
"Very tiny font, difficult to read and use for a non-arabic person", I am trying to learn arabic and from student perspective it is very difficult to use such a dictionary since the fonts are very very small. You will need a microscope to read without straining your eyes. It may be a good dictionary for people who speaks Arabic, but for me .....
"Awesome!", The book is great, transliterates the words and gives multiple uses of the roots. The only problem is that it is only Arabic to English! But other than that, it's great.
