"The one and only, all in one place." Best text for technique for modern jazz and a lot more. Nice to have them all in 1 place. I've been using and recommending this series for years, great stuff. But it gets old lending out your copies of the individual books and never getting them back. This way you have yours, and if someone needs one, you can tell them to get their own, and justify it by telling them they can pay less to get just the one they need.
"Great method for beginners and classic guitar players who want to learn pick technique" This is a great method for every guitar player; beginner or pro. It is teaching both the technique and the theory; easy to understand and proceed.
"Good book, if you have an instructor" It's a good book if you have an instructor. I'm taking lessons, and I've had some music classes before, so this book works for me. This book doesn't have a whole lot of text explaining things. I would not recommend this book to the total beginner.
"A Great Learning Tool" I am thoroughly enjoying this book. It is helping me regain some of the proficiency that I had as a teenaged guitar player.
This is not a book of familiar songs to entertain you. It is a book with exercises, etudes, and interesting musical passages that will help you gain guitar-playing skills. It also intoduces the necessary chords and progressions.
If you are just looking for the easy way out and just want to learn a couple of riffs and chords in your favorite genre, don't buy this book. If you really want to gain guitar skills, buy the book and be prepared to do the work.
"Picking up guitar after 15 year absence..." I was a self-taught guitar player in my teens and early twenties, but gradually gave it up when I didn't have a guitar to practice on (and was too poor to buy one). This book is a solid investment for any aspiring guitar player who has the committment to really, truly learn to play the guitar. It's solid theory and clever exercises will get you familiar with each key but it isn't for the impatient. This course doesn't coddle, you have to do your homework... and it might help to have a mentor explain some things for clarity. But if you have patience and are in it for the long haul, and are willing to pay your dues, this course is for you. ~a very happy customer.

What our customer's say!
"For The Dedicated Student", If instruction is what you need in a tutorial book then this is not the book for you. While the content is extensive and will take you from novice to expert, the beginning guitarist will struggle with the sparse instruction. Much is left to the imagination to figure out the point of the lesson. When there is explaination it is almost of no use as the author has tried to strip down any prose instruction to the bare minimum at the expense of usability. Although, once past the first several exercises progress will no doubt increase. Each exercise is designed to illistrate a specific element being taught, That said, the exercises struggle to inspire as they are often repiticious and mind numbing sequences of notes that have little 'song writting' quality. My suggestion is that this book is placed as a complimentary book to a more in-depth instructive book rather than a stand alone book. Try other publications first.
"Great guitar book", I find that this book holds a lot of info and covers a great range of learning. It works well for any guitar player and spans a good deal of difficulty levels and can guide a guitar student for the first several years of study depending on learning speed.
"Great For Learning How To Sightread!", This book is just about the end-all of sight-reading books. Commit yourself and you will learn how to read. Caution: may get stuck into fingering positions. Note: Learn the notenames on the fingerboard! P.S.Perfect for college sightreading classes or giving guitar lessons.
"Buy it if you must", I would never have bought this book if my guitar teacher hadn't insisted. It is way to complex for someone trying to learn how to read music on their own.
However, it works VERY well with my teacher. He prescribes the many exercises for me to practice as I simultaneously learn to play and read music.
I understand that this method is supposed to be the best.
"The most comprehensive guitar method ever!", This 3 in 1 volume of the Berklee series by William Leavitt is the most comprehenisive and definitive method for guitar ever written. Primarily a jazz oriented method, this Berklee series by Leavitt is used as the basic text for guitar at the Berklee School of Music.
Its all here -- theory, rhythm, chords, scales/modes, melody, harmony, chord/scale relationship, chord voicings, appreggios, speed and reading exercises, etc. All the music written in this book is original and you will be playing interesting pieces of music right from the get-go (very cool). This method is for serious study and demands discipline and hard work;if you are looking for "fun", forget it. But immense enjoyment and satisfaction await!2
This method might not be the immediate choice for learning rock/metal styles. I would recommend the Troy Stetina method books for rock/metal stylistic specifics. (Although if neoclassical/shred/prog. metal styles are your thing, you definitely should have this method book!) However, this method is for serious study of the guitar regardless of style and should be in the library of any serious guitarist.
This comprehensive guitar method is an investment for a lifetime of learning and playing the guitar. A Modern Method for Guitar is a method book you will go back to again and again even after you work through all three volumes. You don't master it. It IS the master. Unless you're Al Dimeola (who, by the way, went to Berklee). Highly recommended.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"No Holds Barred. The Best Guitar method ever!", This is the best guitar method period. If you really want to learn how to play the entire guitar than this is the method book to get! This book was designed to be used at the Berklee Music School in Boston. This is the same method used by several famous guitar players who attended Berklee...Steve Vai, John Patrucci, etc. YOu get the picture. Just buy it and find the best guitar teacher around who can walk you through book one. After that you will be on your own. Good Luck.
"An absolute MUST for any serious musician on guitar", First, let me say that this method IS NOT all about sight reading. This is an approach that does not cater to illiteracy(unlike most methods that are written in TAB so illiterate guitarists can buy it and stay in their comfort zone), so I can understand how those who don't read may feel like it is a sight reading program.
That being said I'll tell you what it is: Bill Leavitt has devised a logical, progressive way of presenting all of the techniques a guitarist needs to get well on their way to reaching their potential. If you don't read standard notation(little black dots) then you will fluently by the time you get through this program. However, this method just as thoroughly addresses every other technique you can think of. It is truly a complete method.
My greatest regret about my progress as a musician is that I wasted so much time and energy getting sucked into the notion that if Jimi Hendrix was illiterate, then that's the way I want to be. Make the decision now to broaden your horizons and develop a sense of refinement. Be a musician, not just another twit with a guitar.
"great book", this is a great book if you're looking to actually better your reading skills. before using this book i was not the best reader but i have definitely seen improvement in my sight reading. great book for any one who really wants to learn every aspect of how to read on the guitar.
"A Challenging and Rewarding Method!", In my opinion, the best book that you could possibly buy if you're 1.) interested in improving dramatically at guitar, and 2.) willing to abandon 'fluffy' methods of guitar practice and work hard. Leavitt covers a variety of topics, including rhythm techniques, moveable chord and scale shapes, and (the emphasis of volumes 2 and 3) chord/scale relationships.
A must-have! Note that the entire book is written in standard notation. While some might not appreciate this, serious players will.
"Great for guitar study... but not without flaws.", I'm currently using this book for my guitar lessons, and so far it's been really helpful. It provides useful exercises for both left and right hand as well as technique for both hands. The little snip-its for new exercises is short and to the point and makes sense. The only thing that I don't like about the book are: the binding is somewhat weak, and I would have much rather preferred a spiral bound version; there are some "typos" in certain pieces, one which I found to be kind of funny as the chord to be played read as FABbD in first position, which is quite impossible, but it's not so terrible that I couldn't figure out the real chord; there are some occasions in which note values are written wrong, and you'll find that in a measure of 4 only 3 and a half notes are accounted for. Aside from these flaws, this is an excellent book for guitarists of all levels, and is a nice packaged 3-in-1 deal.
