"Nice book IF you have a Arabic speaking helper"
This book is a great inexpensive way to dip your toes into the Arabic alphabet and find out if you want to continue. You will run across questions that will send you running to a patient Arabic speaker if you know one. For deeper study I recommend Alif Baa because you get deeper explanations and dvds where you can hear correct pronunciation. Don't forget to purchase the answer booklet which is $4.95 on Amazon.

"Learn the Arabic alphabet in about 2 days"
I live in Kuwait and got tired of my eyes crossing in confusion every time I looked at Arabic writing. The alphabet is intimidating. Each letter has a different look depending upon where it is in a word for example. However, I bought this book thinking, "Hey, couldn't hurt." I found the book exceptionally easy to use. I continue to refer to it, even though I had mastered the basics of the alphabet and written words in two evenings of reading at bedtime. If you want to understand the Arabic alphabet without tearing out your hair, this is the way to go.

"Perfect System"
This is probably the most perfect self-help book I have ever used. The system starts from the basics and contually builds on that to make the complexity of the language very simple and manageable. You learn a group of letters that share something in common (ex: ba',ta', and tha'). The perfect companions to this book is the translated/transliterated/arabic publication of the Qur'an (ISBN 9781930097537), a couple of children's books in arabic, an arabic newspaper, and audio(which can be found online).

"Helped my wife in her studies"
This was a gift for my wife and although I cannot offer too many specifics, it appears to have greatly helped her in her Arabic studies. If you have a family member or friend who is studying Arabic, this may be an ideal gift.

I wish I could offer more input on the content, but since I'm not knowledgeable about the alphabet, I can only provide information on how helpful the material was for my spouse.

"i would definitely recommend"
i really like this book. the writer teaches you some very important basics and he does it in a way that a friend would. the book is thin and lightweight so the thought of getting through it isnt depressing! Basically you read the book and get the basics and all thats left is practice practice practice! Also helpful to buy some audio lessons in arabic to hear exactly how the leeters should be pronounced.

What our customer's say!

"a great place to start", I love this tiny book. The summer before taking an introductory Arabic language course in college I decided to make things easier for myself by getting acquainted with the alphabet in advance. So I bought this book. I went through it twice and when I finally had to absorb the Arabic alphabet in the fall, it was really easy.

It has four parts: chapter one discusses the Arabic language and such things as word roots; chapter two discusses the alphabet and the sounds in general terms; chapter three is the most important one as it goes through all the letters and their different shapes (initial, medial, final, isolated) and instructions how to write them; chapter four includes reference material (hamza, handwriting, a map of Arab countries, a passage from the Qur'an).

Chapter three is tons of fun since after each letter it gives examples of Arabic words that contain it. I used to cover the transliteration and try to read it - that is a great tool for becoming more comfortable with the alphabet.

If you are going to start Arabic, grab this book first. It is short, clear, and very helpful.

"an intelligent and humane approach", By humane, I mean that the authors' humanity and humility make this more than an intelligent book. They convey their understanding of Arabic and their appreciation of its beauty.

I am currently working my way through this book, filling up about a third of a page of college-lined notebook paper each night with Arabic. I have been doing this for two weeks and expect to make it through the entire book in about eight more weeks of this hour an evening, five day a week approach. It is a testament to the authors' approach that I can already take the romanized Arabic and turn it into 90% correct Arabic script for those letters I have already learned.

I agree with Mr. Awde that we should learn to read and write Arabic as a PRECURSOR to studying its grammar. So I am studying this book concurrently with Pimsleur's Conversational Arabic. And when I finish these two, I will progress into an actual Arabic textbook.

I enjoy and appreciate this book and so I highly recommend it to anyone wishing to learn Arabic.

"This book is a MUST have!!!", This book is a must into the introduction to Arabic writing. It is clearly and intelligently written and easy to understand. As an American born Arab, I learned to speak the language along with all its nuances in tongue placement and glottal stops. I would never have believed that anyone could explain how these sounds could be recreated without the use of CDs or an actual Arab. However, these guys nailed it! If you really read this book and practice like they explain, you will definitely have a great basis for advanced study.

"The Arabic Alphabet", Pretty good introductory guide to the arabic alphabet and pronunciation, with some grammar stuff, too.

"Arabic Alphabet not so basic", Awde and Samano's The Arabic Alphabet is a very good introduction to a complex language. I enjoyed the initial section, but became quickly discouraged with the language. This is not the fault of the authors. I think they succeeded in putting together a slim and accesible book. I hope to pick it up again soon.

"A real help to a a learner of Arabic", It is an immensely useful book for self study. Here's a professionel linguistic and pedagogical guidance towards surmounting the barrier the Arabic alphabet presents to an English speaking westerner. It's OK there's no sound cd.First priority being reading and possibly writing.
However it would be nice with a little more reading stuff for practice at the end of the book. Thank you for that book.

The Arabic Alphabet: How to Read & Write It by Nicholas Awde, Putros Samano

"Brilliant!", This quick read does a great job of showing the reader what they need to know about the Arabic alphabet. The method is step by step and builds on what was previously taught. The authors also take a very no pressure approach to writing. The book does not really address grammar or speaking, but a student will definitely be able to write and read Arabic phonetically.

"Best starting point for learning Arabic", When I first starting learning arabic on my own this was the first book I bought after checking many other titles. If you are going to start out by yourself this is the perfect book to choose and it is cheap. It covers just enough without confusing you too much and introduces the material in an accessible and concise manner. The key to learning how to read and write is practice, practice, and much more practice, and that is why the simplicty of this book is important in my point of view. It gives you the structure to learn and gets out of your way, the rest is up to how dedicated you are.

"Excellent", Having tried for several months to learn Arabic, through various means, I came across this book, bought it, and suddenly, it all makes sense to me. This is the best source I have found in my quest to understand this increasingly important language. About halfway through the second chapter, everything clicked into place in my mind and "I got it". If you are going to learn Arabic, start here first, and the learning process will be made so much easier.

"Excellent book!", I have been trying to learn Arabic for the past few years. I've bought many books but none have been as helpful as this one. I wish I knew about it before. I probably would have been speaking, reading and writing Arabic a long time ago.
