Others say...
"Quality lower than the earlier editions" This phrase book is excellent in itself. Where it falls short in this 2008 edition is that the illustrations seem a bit smaller, harder to read. The new technology section which was added is a benefit for learning new signs, but the illustrations are clearly inferior to those of earlier editions. I've opted against buying the new edition, deciding to use my earlier one. I went to the book store, looked for the new signs in the new section and learned them. When I wasn't sure of the correct motion (which was too often the case), I looked at other dictionaries on the shelf and found them illustrated much better.
"Great content, terrible drawings" This book has very clear explanations of ASL grammar and structure, and lots of useful vocabulary and phrases, but is hobbled by really confusing drawings. In many instances I had to look up a sign in another book ("Signing Illustrated", which has extremely clear drawings) because I was unable to understand a drawing in this one. A worthwhile book, but not practical as a single reference.
"A Guru's Review" After signing & interacting with the Deaf for 17 years, interpreting for 9, and teaching ASL for 3, I confidently recommend "The American Sign Language Phrase Book" for beginners. Its user-friendly, how-to approach is especially appropriate for those seeking simplicity & accuracy in basic everyday conversation. It teaches commonly used vocabulary in proper ASL sentence order, including facial expression and body shifting. Perfect for the beginner's do-it-yourself manual to gain the confidence that you're "signing it right!"
"Sent to son incarcerated in prison." Son, incarcerated in prison, requested book. Hopes to use, following study, in efforts to find employment after release from prison.
"Helpful Reference" This book is very helpful with basics, but beyond simple phrases it does not contain very many signs... recommended for people learning sign language from scratch. Also, one should cross-reference with a A.S.L. online database to make sure signs are up-to-date.

What our customer's say!
"More helpful than your standard ASL dictionary", This book is great because it explains how to say real phrases, as opposed to showing you dictionary words without context. The writing is clear and easy to understand, and there's a lot of background information as well. I recommend this book to anyone who is truly attempting to become fluent in ASL.
"OK but could have been better.", The pictures were very cartoon-like and the depiction of the signing was sometimes hard to decipher just what the gesture actually was supposed to be. Some explanations and/or additional comments would have helped. This book was okay, but not outstanding...I would think a better investment could be made.
"Excellent Buy", I am very happy with my order, I e-mailed them and got a respond back in less than an hour. My book was bought used and looks brand new.
"My favorite ASL book", I have studied several ASL books, and this book is easily the best I have used. This book teaches you ASL phrases and ASL grammar. I really like the way this book explains ASL grammar and sentence structure.

"The American Sign Language Phrase book ", This book is great for those learning A.S.L. because it gives you conversational phrases that you would normally use in taking to deaf people. Much like a Learning French Tape that tells you basic phrases you would use in English and French so that you can learn to converse in Sign by knowing the right phrase and style to use. The only problem I had was that some people have a hard time figuring out the correct hand motion from the illustrations. Also if you are not used to ASL sentence structure you will have a hard time understanding some of the phrases. I found it to be a good hand book for teaching basic sign phrases and words. I suggest using this book with a class or an Instructional Video. It will help to see the signs in motion so that you can match the motion with the illustration.

"Sign Language Phrase Book", This book teaches the use of simple phrases that are used in everyday speech. A good book.
"Funky little book!", This is a great little book and is very helpful. The pictures of the strange guy with an ever changing nose are cute and amusng
"Excellent, easy to use resource.", I have learned a lot about ASL grammar as well as useful phrases from this book. Although I know that I will not be able to attain interpreter status by studying ASL on my own, I have used this book, the Signing Illustrated by Mickey Flodin, and the Barron's ASL The Easy Way to learn enough ASL to be fairly communicative.
Mr. Fant's book is organized by categories, which is the most efficient way to learn ASL I am finding out, and it includes detailed notes on syntax, and useful phrases.
Although no one book can stand alone as the "definitive resource," the 3 I have mentioned are excellent resources for the serious ASL student like myself. I carry the Fant book around and brush up on my phrases whenever I am at a doctor's appointment, or I'm waiting to pick the kids up from school or at a sporting event.
5+stars.
"the syntax grasp", This book was a great help to disconnect from manual signed english and flow into ASL. Once you get enough of the vocabulary down, this book will help you to understand the difference in syntax and grammer, and ultimately, it helped me to communicate faster.
"Realistic ASL!", My ASL class uses an excellent textbook, but this book takes you into the real world - how it is REALLY DONE by the deaf community. Every serious ASL student should have it.
