"writing your dissertation in fifteen minutes a day" Writing Your Dissertation in Fifteen Minutes a Day: A Guide to Starting, Revising, and Finishing Your Doctoral Thesis
"Based on our students' reviews" I give this book as a gift to each of my new PhD students because my experience is that the students simply don't understand the process. I came upon it a couple years ago, and the feedback from the students has been overwhelmingly positive. I haven't personally read it, but the students (who, after all, are the ones it is aimed at), recommend it highly.
"A Must-read: for us 'poor graduate students.'" I love fun. And love difficult things being presented in a funny way. For that, the book is great. And, it really says something. Its bottom line, I summarize it in one sentence, which is an Arabic pronoun: "...Everything that can be diminished will be finished..." For that very reason the book is recommended. And hopefully, at one bright day, all of us will finish our dissertations.
"Good Motivator" It didn't tell me anything that I didn't already know but it provides a good timeline and approach to get you motivated.
"practical guide" When I was writing my own dissertation, I found this book to be very helpful. The notion of working on one's dissertation for fifteen minutes a day is not far out. However, when there is dissertation dread, it is hard to relish the idea of working daily on the dissertation. I found that by following that advice, I would think about the dissertation more and developed a friendlier relationship with the whole project.
The approaches to developing a process, to writing a first draft, to managing the advisor relationship, and to dealing with interruptions were all very helpful. I recommend this book highly to my friends and my clients.

What our customer's say!
"Jump start a chapter with a shot of courage", The author packs discipline and confidence into a quick read that motivated me on more than one occasion as I wrote a dissertation about 13th century poetry written in a language I'd never studied formally.
It took re-reading a chapter here and there to coax me through writing my 300 page thesis, and since I had three children all born during the season of writing my dissertation, there were some days when 15 minutes came one minute at a time and left me with fragements that were undecipherable... still, I have to say that this book, an encouraging spouse, and a patient advisor helped me to get through the process.
If you're stuck and need to feel less guilt and more courage as you face the blank page, this book is for you. If you need a kick of energy and a method for moving forward, read a few pages and then get to work. You can do it!
"worth more than gold", THis book is worth more than twice its weight in gold. I only bought it on the off-chance because it was listed as a book often bought along with another book I was buying, and in any case the price was so affordable. I am so glad I did. I was suffering from intellectual inertia - didn't know where or how to start my writing. This book helped me to see how to take small steps and just begin. I have only had it a few weeks, but already there is a marked difference in my approach to my thesis. I am actually getting something done. It will definitely be my Bible for the year to come.
"one for the canon", If you're just starting your doctoral work and are terrified, buy this book. If you're already writing your dissertation and are stalled, buy this book. If you're a thesis advisor seeking to add another work to the canon on dissertation writing, buy this book. Joan Bolker has a ton of experience working with students; she has seen it all. Her tone combines "C'mon don't be a wuss, you can DO this," with the caring concern of any good mum. She gives the reader tips for working through all the worst possible moments of thesis writing and she covers a range of topics not specifically related to the writing but to all the other considerations: choosing your committee and then working with them; dealing with interruptions; life after the disseration, and more. I particularly like the chapter entitled "The Best Dissertation is a Done Dissertation." I think this is a terrific book.
"CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS", When iread this book,i really enjoyed it especially if you are planning to start your thesis and the instructions r very clear and short.
"Would NOT recommend.", If you are interested in a personal novel this may be the choice for you. I found the content disorganized, the content not as useful as A Dissertation Journey/Roberts. My agenda was looking for help in organizing my ideas, my sources, my paper prep. I was also hoping for some guidance in how to use school resourses (people) for guidance in my thesis. This book, Writing Your Dissertation in Fifteen... was not for me.This is what I recommend (based on my agenda): The Dissertation Journey: A Practical and Comprehensive Guide to Planning, Writing, and Defending Your Dissertation

"Make a Mess then Clean It Up", For academic reasons I've been reading a fair number of these little writing guides lately. Most of them turn out to be useless you-can-do-it cheerleading or weak opinionating with little relevance beyond the author's personal experience. This guide by Bolker rises above the pack because it's based not just on her own personal writing but also on her extensive experience in counseling graduate students from all walks of life. Granted, the title of this book is all wrong, which Bolker even admits in her introduction. Writing a dissertation in just fifteen minutes a day is far from realistic, and Bolker advises that you work on it at least fifteen minutes a day. One truly unique aspect of Bolker's counseling for graduate school writers is her advice on how to beat writer's block. In her system, write anything at all, no matter how sloppy, just to stay in the game - and then clean it up later. Bolker also has a unique take on feeding your writing habit as if it were an addiction, with the threat of withdrawal symptoms that should be avoided. The only problem with this book is that Bolker extends her advice on the writing process into larger graduate school matters - topics that are useful, but too important and varied for the quick treatment they receive here. Stick with Bolker's knowledge of the writing regimen. [~doomsdayer520~]
"Reduces the butteflies", Joan Bolker's personal experience makes this book a credible source and therefore useful reference for your doctoral arsenal. She has started and failed and started and succeeded in her quest for her own doctoral dissertation. The book outlines effective methods and ice breakers in beginning the dissertation process, the mechanics, and one's mindset for doing so. I recommend this book to anyone embarking on this journey.
"Format's great and so's the reading", This book has good, sensible information to help a person start, re-start, or finish a diss. The reading is smooth and easy (versus that particular dissertation stop-and-go, read-and-reread style I hate so much). The book is clear and concise and straight-forward. Get one, read it, get to writing! :-)
"Codswallop and Claptrap", I should've known better, but, being midway through my dissertation, I guess I'm vulnerable to some hideous distractions. This book substitutes cliches and platitudes for scholarship. The piece of advice Ms. Bolker forgot to give was one from 1066 and All That, and I paraphrase to fit the occasion: don't try to start, revise, or finish your disseration by writing on both sides of the paper at once.
Save your money and sanity; search elsewhere.
"Helpful hints and advice!", I sure wish someone recommended this book before I started my dissertation. It's funny and offers great advice for someone just getting started on their diss (I had already pushed my proposal through by the time I got this book). The author reflects on her own experiences writing the diss with great insight, thoughtful self-criticism, and humor. Her experiences are much like the things I have gone through/am going through, so it's easy to relate. She gives you "permission" to not feel so guilty about the typical diss experiences - getting stuck, hating and loathing the diss, fearing your advisor/committee, procrastinating, etc. If you haven't started your diss, or if you're even just starting your doctoral program, GET THIS BOOK. It will come in handy.
